Gauree Gwaarayree, Fifth Mehl:

ਅਗਲੇ ਮੁਏ ਸਿ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਰੇ ॥

agale mue si paachhai pare |

Those who have died have been forgotten.

ਜੋ ਉਬਰੇ ਸੇ ਬੰਧਿ ਲਕੁ ਖਰੇ ॥

jo ubare se bandh lak khare |

Those who survive have fastened their belts.

ਜਿਹ ਧੰਧੇ ਮਹਿ ਓਇ ਲਪਟਾਏ ॥

jih dhandhe meh oe lapattaae |

They are busily occupied in their affairs;

ਉਨ ਤੇ ਦੁਗੁਣ ਦਿੜੀ ਉਨ ਮਾਏ ॥੧॥

aun te dugun dirree un maae |1|

they cling twice as hard to Maya. ||1||

ਓਹ ਬੇਲਾ ਕਛੁ ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

oeh belaa kachh cheet na aavai |

No one thinks of the time of death;

ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਤਾਹੂ ਲਪਟਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

binas jaae taahoo lapattaavai |1| rahaau |

people grasp to hold that which shall pass away. ||1||Pause||

ਆਸਾ ਬੰਧੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਦੇਹ ॥

aasaa bandhee moorakh deh |

The fools - their bodies are bound down by desires.

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲਪਟਿਓ ਅਸਨੇਹ ॥

kaam krodh lapattio asaneh |

They are mired in sexual desire, anger and attachment;

ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਠਾਢੋ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ॥

sir aoopar tthaadto dharam raae |

the Righteous Judge of Dharma stands over their heads.

ਮੀਠੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥

meetthee kar kar bikhiaa khaae |2|

Believing it to be sweet, the fools eat poison. ||2||

ਹਉ ਬੰਧਉ ਹਉ ਸਾਧਉ ਬੈਰੁ ॥

hau bandhau hau saadhau bair |

They say, "I shall tie up my enemy, and I shall cut him down.

ਹਮਰੀ ਭੂਮਿ ਕਉਣੁ ਘਾਲੈ ਪੈਰੁ ॥

hamaree bhoom kaun ghaalai pair |

Who dares to set foot upon my land?

ਹਉ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਹਉ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥

hau panddit hau chatur siaanaa |

I am learned, I am clever and wise."

ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੁ ਨ ਬੁਝੈ ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ॥੩॥

karanaihaar na bujhai bigaanaa |3|

The ignorant ones do not recognize their Creator. ||3||

ਅਪੁਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਨੈ ॥

apunee gat mit aape jaanai |

The Lord Himself knows His Own state and condition.

ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਕਿਆ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਨੈ ॥

kiaa ko kahai kiaa aakh vakhaanai |

What can anyone say? How can anyone describe Him?

ਜਿਤੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਗਨਾ ॥

jit jit laaveh tith tit laganaa |

Whatever He attaches us to - to that we are attached.

ਅਪਨਾ ਭਲਾ ਸਭ ਕਾਹੂ ਮੰਗਨਾ ॥੪॥

apanaa bhalaa sabh kaahoo manganaa |4|

Everyone begs for their own good. ||4||

ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੁ ॥

sabh kichh teraa toon karanaihaar |

Everything is Yours; You are the Creator Lord.

ਅੰਤੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥

ant naahee kichh paaraavaar |

You have no end or limitation.

ਦਾਸ ਅਪਨੇ ਕਉ ਦੀਜੈ ਦਾਨੁ ॥

daas apane kau deejai daan |

Please give this gift to Your servant,

ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੫॥੯॥੭੮॥

kabahoo na visarai naanak naam |5|9|78|

that Nanak might never forget the Naam. ||5||9||78||
