Chhand

ਪਤਿ ਪੂਤਨ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਬਿਜੈ ਪੂਤਨ ਤੇ ਪੈਯੈ ॥

pat pootan te rahai bijai pootan te paiyai |

(Rani) With the offspring comes the honour in the world.

ਦਿਰਬੁ ਕਪੂਤਨ ਜਾਇ ਰਾਜ ਸਪੂਤਨੁ ਬਹੁਰੈਯੈ ॥

dirab kapootan jaae raaj sapootan bahuraiyai |

Due to spurious progeny the wealth is lost.

ਪਿੰਡ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਹੀ ਦੇਹਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪੂਤੋ ਉਪਜਾਵਹਿ ॥

pindd putr hee dehi preet pooto upajaaveh |

The dead are honoured through sons.

ਬਹੁਤ ਦਿਨਨ ਕੋ ਬੈਰ ਗਯੋ ਪੂਤੈ ਬਹੁਰਾਵਹਿ ॥

bahut dinan ko bair gayo pootai bahuraaveh |

The age-old enmities are eliminated by dint of the sons.

ਜੋ ਪੂਤਨ ਕੌ ਛਾਡਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਤਪਸ︀ਯਾ ਕੋ ਜਾਵੈ ॥

jo pootan kau chhaadd nripat tapasayaa ko jaavai |

The Raja who abandons his offspring and become an ascetic,

ਪਰੈ ਨਰਕ ਸੋ ਜਾਇ ਅਧਿਕ ਤਨ ਮੈ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੪੭॥

parai narak so jaae adhik tan mai dukh paavai |47|

He is thrown in the hell and remains in misery.(47)

ਨ ਕੋ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਪੂਤ ਨ ਕੋ ਹਮਰੀ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

n ko hamaaro poot na ko hamaree koee naaree |

(Raja) Neither I have any son, nor I have any wife.

ਨ ਕੋ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਪਿਤਾ ਨ ਕੋ ਹਮਰੀ ਮਹਤਾਰੀ ॥

n ko hamaaro pitaa na ko hamaree mahataaree |

Neither I have my father, nor any mother.

ਨ ਕੋ ਹਮਰੀ ਭੈਨ ਨ ਕੋ ਹਮਰੋ ਕੋਈ ਭਾਈ ॥

n ko hamaree bhain na ko hamaro koee bhaaee |

Neither I have a sister, nor I have any brother.

ਨ ਕੋ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਦੇਸ ਨ ਹੌ ਕਾਹੂ ਕੌ ਰਾਈ ॥

n ko hamaaro des na hau kaahoo kau raaee |

Neither I Own a Country, nor I am the ruler.

ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਆਇ ਜੋਗ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਯੋ ॥

brithaa jagat mai aae jog bin janam gavaayo |

Without yoga I have obliterated my birth.

ਤਜ︀ਯੋ ਰਾਜ ਅਰੁ ਪਾਟ ਯਹੈ ਜਿਯਰੇ ਮੁਹਿ ਭਾਯੋ ॥੪੮॥

tajayo raaj ar paatt yahai jiyare muhi bhaayo |48|

To abandon the kingship, would satisfy me most now.(48)

ਜਨਨਿ ਜਠਰ ਮਹਿ ਆਇ ਪੁਰਖ ਬਹੁਤੋ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥

janan jatthar meh aae purakh bahuto dukh paaveh |

Then, when he gets access to a urinary place (vagina), he exclaims, ‘I had sex.’

ਮੂਤ੍ਰ ਧਾਮ ਕੌ ਪਾਇ ਕਹਤ ਹਮ ਭੋਗ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥

mootr dhaam kau paae kehat ham bhog kamaaveh |

Man enters the mother’s womb and faces agony.

ਥੂਕ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਕੌ ਚਾਟਿ ਕਹਤ ਅਧਰਾਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪਾਯੋ ॥

thook triyaa kau chaatt kehat adharaamrit paayo |

He licks the spit from woman’s lips and thinks he is honoured with nectar.

ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਜਨਮੁ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਗਵਾਯੋ ॥੪੯॥

brithaa jagat mai janam binaa jagadees gavaayo |49|

But he does not reflect that he has lost the worth of his birth.(49)
