ਤੋਟਕ ਛੰਦ ॥

TOTAK STANZA

ਤ੍ਰਿਪੁਰੈ ਇਕ ਦੈਤ ਬਢਿਯੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਪੁਰੰ ॥

tripurai ik dait badtiyo tripuran |

ਜਿਹ ਤੇਜ ਤਪੈ ਰਵਿ ਜਿਉ ਤ੍ਰਿਪੁਰੰ ॥

jih tej tapai rav jiau tripuran |

In Trupura State lived a three-eyed demons, whose glory was equal to the glory of the Sun, which spread over the three worlds.

ਬਰਦਾਇ ਮਹਾਸੁਰ ਐਸ ਭਯੋ ॥

baradaae mahaasur ais bhayo |

ਜਿਨਿ ਲੋਕ ਚਤੁਰਦਸ ਜੀਤ ਲਯੋ ॥੯॥

jin lok chaturadas jeet layo |9|

After receiving the boon, that demons become so powerful that he conquered all the fourteen regions of the universe.9.

ਜੋਊ ਏਕ ਹੀ ਬਾਣ ਹਣੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪੁਰੰ ॥

joaoo ek hee baan hane tripuran |

ਸੋਊ ਨਾਸ ਕਰੈ ਤਿਹ ਦੈਤ ਦੁਰੰ ॥

soaoo naas karai tih dait duran |

(That demon had this boon) that anyone who had the power to kill him with one arrow, he only could kill that terrible demon.

ਅਸ ਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿਯੋ ਕਬਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਗਨੈ ॥

as ko pragattiyo kab taeh ganai |

ਇਕ ਬਾਣ ਹੀ ਸੋ ਪੁਰ ਤੀਨ ਹਨੈ ॥੧੦॥

eik baan hee so pur teen hanai |10|

The poet now wants to describe that mighty warrior who could kill that three-eyed demon with one arrow.10.

ਸਿਵ ਧਾਇ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਮਾਰਨ ਕੋ ॥

siv dhaae chaliyo tih maaran ko |

ਜਗ ਕੇ ਸਬ ਜੀਵ ਉਧਾਰਨ ਕੋ ॥

jag ke sab jeev udhaaran ko |

For the protection of the beings of the world and the killing of that demon, the god Shiva moved forward.

ਕਰਿ ਕੋਪਿ ਤਜਿਯੋ ਸਿਤ ਸੁਧ ਸਰੰ ॥

kar kop tajiyo sit sudh saran |

ਇਕ ਬਾਰ ਹੀ ਨਾਸ ਕੀਯੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਪੁਰੰ ॥੧੧॥

eik baar hee naas keeyo tripuran |11|

In great fury, shot one arrow and only with arrow, he destroyed that demon of Tripura, named Tripura.11.

ਲਖਿ ਕਉਤੁਕ ਸਾਧ ਸਬੈ ਹਰਖੇ ॥

lakh kautuk saadh sabai harakhe |

ਸੁਮਨੰ ਬਰਖਾ ਨਭ ਤੇ ਬਰਖੇ ॥

sumanan barakhaa nabh te barakhe |

Seeing this performance all the saints were pleased and gods showered flowers form heaven.

ਧੁਨਿ ਪੂਰ ਰਹੀ ਜਯ ਸਦ ਹੂਅੰ ॥

dhun poor rahee jay sad hooan |

ਗਿਰਿ ਹੇਮ ਹਲਾਚਲ ਕੰਪ ਭੂਅੰ ॥੧੨॥

gir hem halaachal kanp bhooan |12|

The sound of “hail, hail” resound, there was consternation on Himalaya mountain and the earth tembled.12.

ਦਿਨ ਕੇਤਕ ਬੀਤ ਗਏ ਜਬ ਹੀ ॥

din ketak beet ge jab hee |

ਅਸੁਰੰਧਕ ਬੀਰ ਬੀਯੋ ਤਬ ਹੀ ॥

asurandhak beer beeyo tab hee |

After a long time, another demons named Andhakasura came on the scene

ਤਬ ਬੈਲਿ ਚੜਿਯੋ ਗਹਿ ਸੂਲ ਸਿਵੰ ॥

tab bail charriyo geh sool sivan |

ਸੁਰ ਚਉਕਿ ਚਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੋਪ ਕਿਵੰ ॥੧੩॥

sur chauk chale har kop kivan |13|

Mounting his bull and holding his trident, Shiva moved forward (to chastise him). Seeing his terrible form, the gods were also startled.13.

ਗਣ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ਜਛ ਸਬੈ ਉਰਗੰ ॥

gan gandhrab jachh sabai uragan |

ਬਰਦਾਨ ਦਯੋ ਸਿਵ ਕੋ ਦੁਰਗੰ ॥

baradaan dayo siv ko duragan |

Shiva marched forward alongwith Ganas, Gandharavas, Yakshas and Nagas and Durga also granted boon to him.

ਹਨਿਹੋ ਨਿਰਖੰਤ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ਸੁਰੰ ॥

haniho nirakhant muraar suran |

ਤ੍ਰਿਪੁਰਾਰਿ ਹਨਿਯੋ ਜਿਮ ਕੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਪੁਰੰ ॥੧੪॥

tripuraar haniyo jim kai tripuran |14|

The gods began to see that Shiva would kill Andhakasura in the same way as he had killed the demon Tripura.14.

ਉਹ ਓਰਿ ਚੜੇ ਦਲ ਲੈ ਦੁਜਨੰ ॥

auh or charre dal lai dujanan |

ਇਹ ਓਰ ਰਿਸ੍ਰਯੋ ਗਹਿ ਸੂਲ ਸਿਵੰ ॥

eih or risrayo geh sool sivan |

Form the other side that demons of vicious intellect started. From this side in great fury and holding the trident in his hand, Shiva moved.

ਰਣ ਰੰਗ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਣਧੀਰ ਰਣੰ ॥

ran rang range ranadheer ranan |

ਜਨ ਸੋਭਤ ਪਾਵਕ ਜੁਆਲ ਬਣੰ ॥੧੫॥

jan sobhat paavak juaal banan |15|

Intoxicated with war-tactics, the mighty warriors presented the scene like the blazing flames of fire in the forst.15.

ਦਨੁ ਦੇਵ ਦੋਊ ਰਣ ਰੰਗ ਰਚੇ ॥

dan dev doaoo ran rang rache |

ਗਹਿ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਬੈ ਰਸ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਮਚੇ ॥

geh sasatr sabai ras rudr mache |

Both the demons and gods became absorbed in the war and bedecking themselves with weapons all the warriors enjoyed the relish of anger.

ਸਰ ਛਾਡਤ ਬੀਰ ਦੋਊ ਹਰਖੈ ॥

sar chhaaddat beer doaoo harakhai |

ਜਨੁ ਅੰਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਲੈ ਘਨ ਸੈ ਬਰਖੈ ॥੧੬॥

jan ant pralai ghan sai barakhai |16|

The warriors of both the sides enjoyed the shooting of arrows and the arrows are being showered like the raining of clouds on the doomsday.16.
