Tomar Chhand

ਰਾਨਿਯਿਹ ਸਖੀ ਪਠਾਇ ॥

raaniyih sakhee patthaae |

ਸੋ ਲਯੋ ਧਾਮ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥

so layo dhaam bulaae |

The Rani sent her maid and called him to her home.

ਤਜਿ ਕੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕੀ ਕਾਨਿ ॥

taj kai nripat kee kaan |

ਤਾ ਸੌ ਰਮੀ ਰੁਚਿ ਮਾਨਿ ॥੫॥

taa sau ramee ruch maan |5|

Ignoring the prestige of the Raja, she indulged in love-making with him.(5)

ਤਿਹ ਅਮਿਤ ਰੂਪ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ॥

tih amit roop nihaar |

ਸਿਵ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਗਯੋ ਸਰ ਮਾਰਿ ॥

siv satru gayo sar maar |

His extreme handsomeness had shot through her a Cupid’s sharp arrow.

ਤਬ ਲੌ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਗਯੋ ਆਇ ॥

tab lau nripat gayo aae |

ਅਬਲਾ ਅਧਿਕ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਇ ॥੬॥

abalaa adhik dukh paae |6|

In the meantime, the Raja appeared.(6)

ਤਬ ਕਿਯੋ ਇਹੈ ਉਪਾਇ ॥

tab kiyo ihai upaae |

ਇਕ ਦੇਗ ਲਈ ਮੰਗਾਇ ॥

eik deg lee mangaae |

She proceeded this way: she sent for it large cooking-vessel,

ਤਾ ਪੈ ਤਵਾ ਕੌ ਦੀਨ ॥

taa pai tavaa kau deen |

ਕੋਊ ਸਕੈ ਤਾਹਿ ਨ ਚੀਨ ॥੭॥

koaoo sakai taeh na cheen |7|

And covered it with a lid so that no one could see inside.(7)

ਜਾ ਮੈ ਘਨੌ ਜਲ ਪਰੈ ॥

jaa mai ghanau jal parai |

ਤਰ ਕੌ ਨ ਬੂੰਦਿਕ ਢਰੈ ॥

tar kau na boondik dtarai |

(She spoke) ‘I have filled it with water and not a drop can drip out of it,

ਤਾ ਮੈ ਗੁਲਾਬਹਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

taa mai gulaabeh paae |

ਕਾਢਿਯੌ ਪਤਿਹਿ ਦਿਖਰਾਇ ॥੮॥

kaadtiyau patihi dikharaae |8|

‘I have put roses in it,’ and then she presented her husband the rosewater.(8)
