ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Salok, First Mehl:

ਸਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਦੁਇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜੇ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

saram dharam due naanakaa je dhan palai paae |

Modesty and righteousness both, O Nanak, are qualities of those who are blessed with true wealth.

ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਨ ਕਾਂਢੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਚੋਟਾਂ ਖਾਇ ॥

so dhan mitru na kaandteeai jit sir chottaan khaae |

Do not refer to that wealth as your friend, which leads you to get your head beaten.

ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਪਲੈ ਧਨੁ ਵਸੈ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਫਕੀਰ ॥

jin kai palai dhan vasai tin kaa naau fakeer |

Those who possess only this worldly wealth are known as paupers.

ਜਿਨੑ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਤੂ ਵਸਹਿ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰ ॥੧॥

jina kai hiradai too vaseh te nar gunee gaheer |1|

But those, within whose hearts You dwell, O Lord - those people are oceans of virtue. ||1||
