ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:

ਜਉ ਮੈ ਕੀਓ ਸਗਲ ਸੀਗਾਰਾ ॥

jau mai keeo sagal seegaaraa |

Even though I totally decorated myself,

ਤਉ ਭੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਨ ਪਤੀਆਰਾ ॥

tau bhee meraa man na pateeaaraa |

still, my mind was not satisfied.

ਅਨਿਕ ਸੁਗੰਧਤ ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਲਾਵਉ ॥

anik sugandhat tan meh laavau |

I applied various scented oils to my body,

ਓਹੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਸਮਾਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵਉ ॥

ohu sukh til samaan nahee paavau |

and yet, I did not obtain even a tiny bit of pleasure from this.

ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਚਿਤਵਉ ਐਸੀ ਆਸਾਈ ॥

man meh chitvau aisee aasaaee |

Within my mind, I hold such a desire,

ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਦੇਖਤ ਜੀਵਉ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਈ ॥੧॥

pria dekhat jeevau meree maaee |1|

that I may live only to behold my Beloved, O my mother. ||1||

ਮਾਈ ਕਹਾ ਕਰਉ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨ ਧੀਰੈ ॥

maaee kahaa krau ihu man na dheerai |

O mother, what should I do? This mind cannot rest.

ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਹਿਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

pria preetam bairaag hirai |1| rahaau |

It is bewitched by the tender love of my Beloved. ||1||Pause||

ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਭੂਖਨ ਸੁਖ ਬਹੁਤ ਬਿਸੇਖੈ ॥

basatr bibhookhan sukh bahut bisekhai |

Garments, ornaments, and such exquisite pleasures

ਓਇ ਭੀ ਜਾਨਉ ਕਿਤੈ ਨ ਲੇਖੈ ॥

oe bhee jaanau kitai na lekhai |

I look upon these as of no account.

ਪਤਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਅਰੁ ਮਾਨੁ ਮਹਤੁ ॥

pat sobhaa ar maan mehat |

Likewise, honor, fame, dignity and greatness,

ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰੀ ਸਗਲ ਜਗਤੁ ॥

aagiaakaaree sagal jagat |

obedience by the whole world,

ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਐਸਾ ਹੈ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਲਾਲ ॥

grihu aisaa hai sundar laal |

and a household as beautiful as a jewel.

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵਾ ਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥੨॥

prabh bhaavaa taa sadaa nihaal |2|

If I am pleasing to God's Will, then I shall be blessed, and forever in bliss. ||2||

ਬਿੰਜਨ ਭੋਜਨ ਅਨਿਕ ਪਰਕਾਰ ॥

binjan bhojan anik parakaar |

With foods and delicacies of so many different kinds,

ਰੰਗ ਤਮਾਸੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ ॥

rang tamaase bahut bisathaar |

and such abundant pleasures and entertainments,

ਰਾਜ ਮਿਲਖ ਅਰੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਸਿ ॥

raaj milakh ar bahut furamaaeis |

power and property and absolute command

ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਨ ਜਾਇਸਿ ॥

man nahee dhraapai trisanaa na jaaeis |

with these, the mind is not satisfied, and its thirst is not quenched.

ਬਿਨੁ ਮਿਲਬੇ ਇਹੁ ਦਿਨੁ ਨ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ॥

bin milabe ihu din na bihaavai |

Without meeting Him, this day does not pass.

ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤਾ ਸਭ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥

milai prabhoo taa sabh sukh paavai |3|

Meeting God, I find peace. ||3||

ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਸੁਨੀ ਇਹ ਸੋਇ ॥

khojat khojat sunee ih soe |

By searching and seeking, I have heard this news,

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਤਰਿਓ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

saadhasangat bin tario na koe |

that without the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, no one swims across.

ਜਿਸੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

jis masatak bhaag tin satigur paaeaa |

One who has this good destiny written upon his forehead, finds the True Guru.

ਪੂਰੀ ਆਸਾ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਇਆ ॥

pooree aasaa man tripataaeaa |

His hopes are fulfilled, and his mind is satisfied.

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਾ ਚੂਕੀ ਡੰਝਾ ॥

prabh miliaa taa chookee ddanjhaa |

When one meets God, then his thirst is quenched.

ਨਾਨਕ ਲਧਾ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਮੰਝਾ ॥੪॥੧੧॥

naanak ladhaa man tan manjhaa |4|11|

Nanak has found the Lord, within his mind and body. ||4||11||
