ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਜਰਾਜ ਕੈ ਕਾਜ ਕੋ ਆਜ ਕਰੋ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਭਟ ਨਾਹਿ ਟਰੋ ॥

sree brijaraaj kai kaaj ko aaj karo sabh hee bhatt naeh ttaro |

“O warriors! do the task assigned by Krishna and do not run away from war-arena

ਧਨੁ ਬਾਨ ਸੰਭਾਰ ਕੈ ਪਾਨਨ ਮੈ ਅਰਿ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕਉ ਲਲਕਾਰਿ ਪਰੋ ॥

dhan baan sanbhaar kai paanan mai ar bhoopat kau lalakaar paro |

Hold your bow and arrows in your hands and fall upon the king shouting at him

ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਮਾਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਰ ਰਰੋ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਹਥਿਯਾਰ ਧਰੋ ॥

mukh te mil maar hee maar raro apune apune hathiyaar dharo |

“Holding you weapons in your hands, shout ‘kill, kill’

ਤੁਮ ਤੋ ਕੁਲ ਕੀ ਕਛੁ ਲਾਜ ਕਰੋ ਖੜਗੇਸ ਕੇ ਸੰਗਿ ਲਰੋ ਨ ਡਰੋ ॥੧੬੪੦॥

tum to kul kee kachh laaj karo kharrages ke sang laro na ddaro |1640|

Think at least something of the tradition of your clan and fight with Kharag Singh fearlessly.”1640.

ਭਾਨੁਜ ਕੋਪ ਭਯੋ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਤਿਹ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਹਠਿ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਧਾਯੋ ॥

bhaanuj kop bhayo chit mai tih bhoopat ke hatth saamuhe dhaayo |

Karan, the son of Surya, in anger, stood firmly with persistence in front of the king

ਚਾਪ ਚਢਾਇ ਲਯੋ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਸਰ ਯੌ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਇਕ ਬੈਨ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥

chaap chadtaae layo kar mai sar yau tab hee ik bain sunaayo |

And pulling his bow and taking his arrow in his hand, he said to the king

ਆਯੋ ਹੈ ਕੇਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਮੁਖ ਮੈ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਐਸੇ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਤਊ ਸੁਨਿ ਪਾਯੋ ॥

aayo hai kehar ke mukh mai mrig aise kahiyo nrip taoo sun paayo |

“Do you listen, O king! now you have fallen like a deer in the mouth of a lion like me

ਭੂਪਤਿ ਹਾਥਿ ਲਯੋ ਧਨੁ ਬਾਨ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ਕਹਿਓ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਸਮਝਾਯੋ ॥੧੬੪੧॥

bhoopat haath layo dhan baan sanbhaar kahio mukh te samajhaayo |1641|

” The king took his bow and arrow in his hands and said to the son of Surya instructing him,1641

ਭਾਨੁਜ ਕਾਹੇ ਕਉ ਜੁਝਿ ਮਰੋ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਜਾਹੁ ਭਲੋ ਦਿਨ ਕੋਇਕ ਜੀਜੋ ॥

bhaanuj kaahe kau jujh maro grih jaahu bhalo din koeik jeejo |

“O Karan, the son of Surya! why do you want to die? You may go and remain alive for some days

ਖਾਤ ਹਲਾਹਲ ਕਿਉ ਅਪਨੇ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਧਾਮੁ ਸੁਧਾ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੋ ॥

khaat halaahal kiau apane kar jaae kai dhaam sudhaa ras peejo |

Why are you taking poison with your own hands, go to your home and quaff the nectar comfortably,”

ਯੌ ਕਹਿ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਬਾਨ ਹਨਿਓ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਜੁਧਹਿ ਕੋ ਫਲੁ ਲੀਜੋ ॥

yau keh bhoopat baan hanio mukh te kahiyo judheh ko fal leejo |

Saying this, the king discharged his arrow and said, “Look to the reward of coming to the war

ਲਾਗਤਿ ਬਾਨ ਗਿਰਿਓ ਮੁਰਛਾਇ ਕੈ ਸ੍ਰਉਨ ਗਿਰਿਓ ਸਗਰੋ ਅੰਗ ਭੀਜੋ ॥੧੬੪੨॥

laagat baan girio murachhaae kai sraun girio sagaro ang bheejo |1642|

” On being hit by the arrow he fell down unconscious and all his body was filled with blood.1642.

ਤਉ ਹੀ ਲਉ ਭੀਮ ਗਦਾ ਗਹਿ ਕੈ ਪੁਨਿ ਪਾਰਥ ਲੈ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਧਨ ਧਾਯੋ ॥

tau hee lau bheem gadaa geh kai pun paarath lai kar mai dhan dhaayo |

Then Bhima ran with his mace and Arjuna with his bow

ਭੀਖਮ ਦ੍ਰੋਣ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਸਹਦੇਵ ਸੁ ਭੂਰਸ੍ਰਵਾ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਪ ਬਢਾਯੋ ॥

bheekham dron kripaa sahadev su bhoorasravaa man kop badtaayo |

Bhishma, Drona, Kripacharya, Sahdev Bhurshrava etc. also got enraged

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਦੁਰਜੋਧਨ ਰਾਇ ਜੁਧਿਸਟਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬਿਜ ਨਾਇਕ ਲੈ ਦਲੁ ਆਯੋ ॥

sree durajodhan raae judhisattar sree bij naaeik lai dal aayo |

Duryodhana, Yudhishtar and Krishna also came with their army

ਭੂਪ ਕੇ ਤੀਰਨ ਕੇ ਡਰ ਤੇ ਬਰ ਬੀਰਨ ਤਉ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਡਰ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੧੬੪੩॥

bhoop ke teeran ke ddar te bar beeran tau man mai ddar paayo |1643|

With the arrows of the king, the mighty warriors became fearful in their mind.1643.

ਤਉ ਲਗਿ ਸ੍ਰੀਪਤਿ ਆਪ ਕੁਪਿਯੋ ਸਰ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਉਰ ਮੈ ਇਕ ਮਾਰਿਓ ॥

tau lag sreepat aap kupiyo sar bhoopat ke ur mai ik maario |

Till that time, Krishna, in great ire, shot an arrow in the heart of the king

ਏਕ ਹੀ ਬਾਨ ਕੋ ਤਾਨ ਤਬੈ ਤਿਹ ਸਾਰਥੀ ਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਅੰਗ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰਿਓ ॥

ek hee baan ko taan tabai tih saarathee ko pratiang prahaario |

Now he, pulling his bow discharged an arrow towards the charioteer

ਭੂਪਤਿ ਆਗੇ ਹੀ ਹੋਤ ਭਯੋ ਰਨ ਭੂਮਹਿ ਤੇ ਨ ਟਰਿਓ ਪਗ ਟਾਰਿਓ ॥

bhoopat aage hee hot bhayo ran bhoomeh te na ttario pag ttaario |

Now the king advanced forward and his feet slipped in the battlefield

ਸੂਰ ਸਰਾਹਤ ਭੇ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਜਸੁ ਯੋਂ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਿਓ ॥੧੬੪੪॥

soor saraahat bhe sabh hee jas yon mukh te kab sayaam uchaario |1644|

The poet says that all the warriors began to eulogise this war.1644.

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਅਵਿਲੋਕ ਕੈ ਆਨਨ ਇਉ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਨਾਈ ॥

sree har ko avilok kai aanan iau keh kai nrip baat sunaaee |

ਛੂਟ ਰਹੀ ਅਲਕੈ ਕਟਿ ਲਉ ਉਪਮਾ ਮੁਖ ਕੀ ਬਰਨੀ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਈ ॥

chhoott rahee alakai katt lau upamaa mukh kee baranee nahee jaaee |

Seeing Krishna, the king said, “You have got very beautiful hair and the glory of your face is indescribable

ਚਾਰੁ ਦਿਪੈ ਅਖੀਆਨ ਦੋਊ ਉਪਮਾ ਨ ਕਛੂ ਇਨ ਤੇ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ॥

chaar dipai akheeaan doaoo upamaa na kachhoo in te adhikaaee |

“Your eyes are extremely charming and they cannot be compared with anything

ਜਾਹੁ ਚਲੇ ਤੁਮ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਛਾਡਤਿ ਲੈਹੁ ਕਹਾ ਹਠਿ ਠਾਨਿ ਲਰਾਈ ॥੧੬੪੫॥

jaahu chale tum kau har chhaaddat laihu kahaa hatth tthaan laraaee |1645|

O Krishna! you may go away, I leave you, what will you gain by fighting?” 1645.

ਧਨੁ ਬਾਨ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਬਹੁਰੋ ਹਮਰੀ ਬਤੀਯਾ ਹਰਿ ਜੂ ਸੁਨਿ ਲੀਜੈ ॥

dhan baan sanbhaar kahiyo bahuro hamaree bateeyaa har joo sun leejai |

ਕਿਉ ਹਠਿ ਠਾਨਿ ਅਯੋਧਨ ਮੈ ਹਮ ਸਿਉ ਸਮੁਹਾਇ ਕੈ ਆਹਵ ਕੀਜੈ ॥

kiau hatth tthaan ayodhan mai ham siau samuhaae kai aahav keejai |

Holing his bow and arrows, the king said to Krishna, “You listen to me, why are you coming before me to fight persistently?

ਮਾਰਤ ਹੋ ਅਬ ਤੋਹਿ ਨ ਛਾਡਤ ਜਾਹੁ ਭਲੇ ਅਬ ਲਉ ਨਹੀ ਛੀਜੈ ॥

maarat ho ab tohi na chhaaddat jaahu bhale ab lau nahee chheejai |

“I shall kill you now and shall not leave you, otherwise you may go away

ਮਾਨ ਕਹਿਓ ਹਮਰੋ ਪੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਜਰਾਰਨਿ ਕੋ ਨ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਦੁਖ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੧੬੪੬॥

maan kahio hamaro pur kee kajaraaran ko na brithaa dukh deejai |1646|

Nothing has gone wrong even now, obey me and do not uselessly put in anguish the women of the city by dying.1646.

ਹਉ ਹਠ ਠਾਨਿ ਅਯੋਧਨ ਮੈ ਘਨ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਘਨੇ ਰਨਬੀਰ ਨਿਬੇਰੇ ॥

hau hatth tthaan ayodhan mai ghan sayaam ghane ranabeer nibere |

“I have killed many warriors engaged in war persistently

ਕਾ ਕੇ ਕਹੇ ਹਮ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਜੂ ਸਮੁਹਾਇ ਭਯੋ ਨ ਫਿਰਿਓ ਰਨ ਹੇਰੇ ॥

kaa ke kahe ham so har joo samuhaae bhayo na firio ran here |

O Krishna! who has instigated you to fight with me?, and you are not running away from the war arena

ਮਾਰੋ ਕਹਾ ਅਬ ਤੋ ਕਹੁ ਹਉ ਕਰੁਨਾ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਜੀਯ ਆਵਤ ਮੇਰੇ ॥

maaro kahaa ab to kahu hau karunaa at hee jeey aavat mere |

ਤੋ ਕਉ ਮਰਿਓ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਛਿਨ ਮੈ ਮਰਿ ਜੈ ਹੈ ਸਖਾ ਹਰਿ ਜੇਤਕ ਤੇਰੇ ॥੧੬੪੭॥

to kau mario sun kai chhin mai mar jai hai sakhaa har jetak tere |1647|

“The mercy has arisen in my heart, therefore why should I kill you? hearing about your death all your friends will also die in an instant.”1647.

ਹਰਿ ਇਉ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਧਨੁ ਬਾਨ ਲਯੋ ਰਿਸਿ ਕੈ ਖੜਗੇਸ ਕੇ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਧਾਯੋ ॥

har iau sun kai dhan baan layo ris kai kharrages ke saamuhe dhaayo |

ਆਵਤ ਹੀ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਘਟਿਕਾ ਜੁਗ ਬਾਨਨ ਜੁਧੁ ਮਚਾਯੋ ॥

aavat hee kab sayaam bhanai ghattikaa jug baanan judh machaayo |

Listening to such a talk, Krishna fell upon Kharag Singh in ire, and according to the poet he continued the war for two gharis (very short period)

ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਗਿਰਾਵਤ ਭਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਉ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਹੂੰ ਰਥ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਭੂਮਿ ਗਿਰਾਯੋ ॥

sayaam giraavat bhayo nrip kau nrip hoon rath te har bhoom giraayo |

Sometimes Krishna and sometimes the king caused the other to fall from the chariot

ਕਉਤਕ ਹੇਰਿ ਸਰਾਹਤ ਭੇ ਭਟ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੋ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਯੋ ॥੧੬੪੮॥

kautak her saraahat bhe bhatt sree har ko nrip ko jas gaayo |1648|

Seeing this spectacle the minstrels began to praise the king and Krishna.1648.

ਇਤਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਚਢਿਯੋ ਰਥ ਆਪਨ ਪੈ ਰਥ ਪੈ ਉਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਖੜਗੇਸ ਚਢਿਓ ॥

eit sayaam chadtiyo rath aapan pai rath pai ut sree kharrages chadtio |

On this side Krishna mounted his chariot and on the other side, the king Kharag Singh ascended his vehicle

ਅਤਿ ਕੋਪ ਬਢਾਇ ਮਹਾ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਤਿਹ ਮਯਾਨਹੁ ਤੇ ਕਰਵਾਰ ਕਢਿਓ ॥

at kop badtaae mahaa chit mai tih mayaanahu te karavaar kadtio |

The king, in fury, drew out his sword from the scabbard

ਸੁ ਘਨੋ ਦਲ ਪੰਡੁ ਕੇ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਨ ਕੋ ਰਿਸਿ ਤੇਜ ਕੀ ਪਾਵਕ ਸੰਗ ਡਢਿਓ ॥

su ghano dal pandd ke putran ko ris tej kee paavak sang ddadtio |

The army of Pandavas also got ablazed with anger,

ਧੁਨਿ ਬੇਦ ਕੀ ਅਸਤ੍ਰਨਿ ਸਸਤ੍ਰਨਿ ਕੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਪਾਰਥ ਸਾਥ ਪਢਿਓ ॥੧੬੪੯॥

dhun bed kee asatran sasatran kee bidh maanahu paarath saath padtio |1649|

It appeared that the sound of the weapons and arms was the recitation of the Vedic mantras.1649.

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਦੁਰਜੋਧਨ ਕੇ ਦਲ ਕੋ ਲਖਿ ਭੂਪ ਤਬੈ ਅਤਿ ਬਾਨ ਚਲਾਏ ॥

sree durajodhan ke dal ko lakh bhoop tabai at baan chalaae |

Seeing the army of Duryodhana, the king showered his arrows

ਬਾਕੇ ਕੀਏ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਤਹ ਬੀਰ ਘਨੇ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਜਮ ਧਾਮਿ ਪਠਾਏ ॥

baake kee birathee teh beer ghane tab hee jam dhaam patthaae |

He depriving many warriors of their chariots, dispatched them to the abode of Yama

ਭੀਖਮ ਦ੍ਰਉਣ ਤੇ ਆਦਿਕ ਸੂਰ ਭਜੇ ਰਣ ਮੈ ਨ ਕੋਊ ਠਹਰਾਏ ॥

bheekham draun te aadik soor bhaje ran mai na koaoo tthaharaae |

ਜੀਤ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਤਜੀ ਬਹੁਰੋ ਖੜਗੇਸ ਕੇ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਨਾਹਿਨ ਆਏ ॥੧੬੫੦॥

jeet kee aas tajee bahuro kharrages ke saamuhe naahin aae |1650|

The warriors like Bhishma and Drona ran away from the battlefield and relinquishing all hope of victory, they did not come again before Kharag Singh.1650.
