ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Basant, Fifth Mehl:

ਹਟਵਾਣੀ ਧਨ ਮਾਲ ਹਾਟੁ ਕੀਤੁ ॥

hattavaanee dhan maal haatt keet |

The shopkeeper deals in merchandise for profit.

ਜੂਆਰੀ ਜੂਏ ਮਾਹਿ ਚੀਤੁ ॥

jooaaree jooe maeh cheet |

The gambler's consciousness is focused on gambling.

ਅਮਲੀ ਜੀਵੈ ਅਮਲੁ ਖਾਇ ॥

amalee jeevai amal khaae |

The opium addict lives by consuming opium.

ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਜੀਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੧॥

tiau har jan jeevai har dhiaae |1|

In the same way, the humble servant of the Lord lives by meditating on the Lord. ||1||

ਅਪਨੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਰਚੈ ॥

apanai rang sabh ko rachai |

Everyone is absorbed in his own pleasures.

ਜਿਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਗੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

jit prabh laaeaa tith tit lagai |1| rahaau |

He is attached to whatever God attaches him to. ||1||Pause||

ਮੇਘ ਸਮੈ ਮੋਰ ਨਿਰਤਿਕਾਰ ॥

megh samai mor niratikaar |

When the clouds and the rain come, the peacocks dance.

ਚੰਦ ਦੇਖਿ ਬਿਗਸਹਿ ਕਉਲਾਰ ॥

chand dekh bigaseh kaulaar |

Seeing the moon, the lotus blossoms.

ਮਾਤਾ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਦੇਖਿ ਅਨੰਦ ॥

maataa baarik dekh anand |

When the mother sees her infant, she is happy.

ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਜੀਵਹਿ ਜਪਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ॥੨॥

tiau har jan jeeveh jap gobind |2|

In the same way, the humble servant of the Lord lives by meditating on the Lord of the Universe. ||2||

ਸਿੰਘ ਰੁਚੈ ਸਦ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਮਾਸ ॥

singh ruchai sad bhojan maas |

The tiger always wants to eat meat.

ਰਣੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਸੂਰੇ ਚਿਤ ਉਲਾਸ ॥

ran dekh soore chit ulaas |

Gazing upon the battlefield, the warrior's mind is exalted.

ਕਿਰਪਨ ਕਉ ਅਤਿ ਧਨ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

kirapan kau at dhan piaar |

The miser is totally in love with his wealth.

ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੩॥

har jan kau har har aadhaar |3|

The humble servant of the Lord leans on the Support of the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||

ਸਰਬ ਰੰਗ ਇਕ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

sarab rang ik rang maeh |

All love is contained in the Love of the One Lord.

ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਾ ਸੁਖ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਇ ॥

sarab sukhaa sukh har kai naae |

All comforts are contained in the Comfort of the Lord's Name.

ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਇਹੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥

tiseh paraapat ihu nidhaan |

He alone receives this treasure,

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਕਰੇ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੪॥੨॥

naanak gur jis kare daan |4|2|

O Nanak, unto whom the Guru gives His gift. ||4||2||
