Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਖੇਲ ਤਬੇਲਾ ਘੋੜੇ ਕਹਾ ਭੇਰੀ ਸਹਨਾਈ ॥
kahaa su khel tabelaa ghorre kahaa bheree sahanaaee |
Where are the games, the stables, the horses? Where are the drums and the bugles?
ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਤੇਗਬੰਦ ਗਾਡੇਰੜਿ ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਲਾਲ ਕਵਾਈ ॥
kahaa su tegaband gaadderarr kahaa su laal kavaaee |
Where are the sword-belts and chariots? Where are those scarlet uniforms?
ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਆਰਸੀਆ ਮੁਹ ਬੰਕੇ ਐਥੈ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥
kahaa su aaraseea muh banke aithai diseh naahee |1|
Where are the rings and the beautiful faces? They are no longer to be seen here. ||1||
ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂ ਗੋਸਾਈ ॥
eihu jag teraa too gosaaee |
This world is Yours; You are the Lord of the Universe.
ਏਕ ਘੜੀ ਮਹਿ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ਜਰੁ ਵੰਡਿ ਦੇਵੈ ਭਾਂਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

In an instant, You establish and disestablish. You distribute wealth as it pleases You. ||1||Pause||
ਕਹਾਂ ਸੁ ਘਰ ਦਰ ਮੰਡਪ ਮਹਲਾ ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਬੰਕ ਸਰਾਈ ॥
kahaan su ghar dar manddap mahalaa kahaa su bank saraaee |
Where are the houses, the gates, the hotels and palaces? Where are those beautiful way-stations?
ਕਹਾਂ ਸੁ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਵੇਖਿ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
kahaan su sej sukhaalee kaaman jis vekh need na paaee |
Where are those beautiful women, reclining on their beds, whose beauty would not allow one to sleep?
ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਪਾਨ ਤੰਬੋਲੀ ਹਰਮਾ ਹੋਈਆ ਛਾਈ ਮਾਈ ॥੨॥
kahaa su paan tanbolee haramaa hoeea chhaaee maaee |2|
Where are those betel leaves, their sellers, and the haremees? They have vanished like shadows. ||2||
ਇਸੁ ਜਰ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਘਣੀ ਵਿਗੁਤੀ ਇਨਿ ਜਰ ਘਣੀ ਖੁਆਈ ॥
eis jar kaaran ghanee vigutee in jar ghanee khuaaee |
For the sake of this wealth, so many were ruined; because of this wealth, so many have been disgraced.
ਪਾਪਾ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੁਇਆ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
paapaa baajhahu hovai naahee mueaa saath na jaaee |
It was not gathered without sin, and it does not go along with the dead.
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਖੁਸਿ ਲਏ ਚੰਗਿਆਈ ॥੩॥
jis no aap khuaae karataa khus le changiaaee |3|
Those, whom the Creator Lord would destroy - first He strips them of virtue. ||3||
ਕੋਟੀ ਹੂ ਪੀਰ ਵਰਜਿ ਰਹਾਏ ਜਾ ਮੀਰੁ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਧਾਇਆ ॥
kottee hoo peer varaj rahaae jaa meer suniaa dhaaeaa |
Millions of religious leaders failed to halt the invader, when they heard of the Emperor's invasion.
ਥਾਨ ਮੁਕਾਮ ਜਲੇ ਬਿਜ ਮੰਦਰ ਮੁਛਿ ਮੁਛਿ ਕੁਇਰ ਰੁਲਾਇਆ ॥
thaan mukaam jale bij mandar muchh muchh kueir rulaaeaa |
He burned the rest-houses and the ancient temples; he cut the princes limb from limb, and cast them into the dust.
ਕੋਈ ਮੁਗਲੁ ਨ ਹੋਆ ਅੰਧਾ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਰਚਾ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
koee mugal na hoaa andhaa kinai na parachaa laaeaa |4|
None of the Mugals went blind, and no one performed any miracle. ||4||
ਮੁਗਲ ਪਠਾਣਾ ਭਈ ਲੜਾਈ ਰਣ ਮਹਿ ਤੇਗ ਵਗਾਈ ॥
mugal patthaanaa bhee larraaee ran meh teg vagaaee |
The battle raged between the Mugals and the Pat'haans, and the swords clashed on the battlefield.
ਓਨੑੀ ਤੁਪਕ ਤਾਣਿ ਚਲਾਈ ਓਨੑੀ ਹਸਤਿ ਚਿੜਾਈ ॥
onaee tupak taan chalaaee onaee hasat chirraaee |
They took aim and fired their guns, and they attacked with their elephants.
ਜਿਨੑ ਕੀ ਚੀਰੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਟੀ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਮਰਣਾ ਭਾਈ ॥੫॥
jina kee cheeree daragah paattee tinaa maranaa bhaaee |5|
Those men whose letters were torn in the Lord's Court, were destined to die, O Siblings of Destiny. ||5||
ਇਕ ਹਿੰਦਵਾਣੀ ਅਵਰ ਤੁਰਕਾਣੀ ਭਟਿਆਣੀ ਠਕੁਰਾਣੀ ॥
eik hindavaanee avar turakaanee bhattiaanee tthakuraanee |
The Hindu women, the Muslim women, the Bhattis and the Rajputs
ਇਕਨੑਾ ਪੇਰਣ ਸਿਰ ਖੁਰ ਪਾਟੇ ਇਕਨੑਾ ਵਾਸੁ ਮਸਾਣੀ ॥
eikanaa peran sir khur paatte ikanaa vaas masaanee |
some had their robes torn away, from head to foot, while others came to dwell in the cremation ground.
ਜਿਨੑ ਕੇ ਬੰਕੇ ਘਰੀ ਨ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਨੑ ਕਿਉ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥੬॥
jina ke banke gharee na aaeaa tina kiau rain vihaanee |6|
Their husbands did not return home - how did they pass their night? ||6||
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਈਐ ॥
aape kare karaae karataa kis no aakh sunaaeeai |
The Creator Himself acts, and causes others to act. Unto whom should we complain?
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਿਸ ਥੈ ਜਾਇ ਰੂਆਈਐ ॥
dukh sukh terai bhaanai hovai kis thai jaae rooaaeeai |
Pleasure and pain come by Your Will; unto whom should we go and cry?
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਏ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੭॥੧੨॥
hukamee hukam chalaae vigasai naanak likhiaa paaeeai |7|12|
The Commander issues His Command, and is pleased. O Nanak, we receive what is written in our destiny. ||7||12||
