Chaupaee

ਸਹਰ ਨਿਕੋਦਰ ਬਨਯੋ ਰਹੈ ॥

sehar nikodar banayo rahai |

In the city of Nikodar, one Shah used to live there.

ਦ੍ਵੈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਜਗ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਕਹੈ ॥

dvai isatree jag taa ke kahai |

Every body knew that he had two wives.

ਲਾਡਮ ਕੁਅਰਿ ਸੁਹਾਗਮ ਦੇਈ ॥

laaddam kuar suhaagam deee |

Their names were Laadam Kunwar and Suhaag Devi and many other

ਜਿਨ ਤੇ ਬਹੁ ਸਿਛ︀ਯਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਲੇਈ ॥੧॥

jin te bahu sichhayaa triy leee |1|

ladies used to come to them to take lessons from them.(1)

ਬਨਯੋ ਅਨਤ ਦੇਸ ਕਹ ਗਯੋ ॥

banayo anat des keh gayo |

ਅਧਿਕ ਸੋਕ ਦੁਹੂੰਅਨ ਕੋ ਭਯੋ ॥

adhik sok duhoonan ko bhayo |

When the Shah went abroad, they were very much afflicted.

ਬਹੁਤ ਕਾਲ ਪਰਦੇਸ ਬਿਤਾਯੋ ॥

bahut kaal parades bitaayo |

ਖਾਟਿ ਕਮਾਇ ਦੇਸ ਕਹ ਆਯੋ ॥੨॥

khaatt kamaae des keh aayo |2|

He remained abroad long time and then came back after earning lot of wealth.(2)

ਕਿਤਕ ਦਿਨਨ ਬਨਿਯਾ ਘਰ ਆਯੋ ॥

kitak dinan baniyaa ghar aayo |

ਦੁਹੂੰ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਨ ਪਕਵਾਨ ਪਕਾਯੋ ॥

duhoon triyan pakavaan pakaayo |

When the Shah was to arrive back, both of them prepared dainty foods.

ਵਹੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਘਰ ਐਹੈ ॥

vahu jaanai mere ghar aihai |

ਵਹ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਜੈਹੈ ॥੩॥

veh jaanai mere hee jaihai |3|

One thought he would come to her and other thought he would come to her.(3)

ਏਕ ਗਾਵ ਬਨਿਯਾ ਰਹਿ ਗਯੋ ॥

ek gaav baniyaa reh gayo |

ਆਵਤ ਚੋਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਨ ਕੇ ਭਯੋ ॥

aavat chor triyan ke bhayo |

The Shah was detained in a village on his way and, here, in the house of one lady, the thieves broke in.

ਜਾਗਤ ਹੇਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਹਿ ਨਹਿ ਆਯੋ ॥

jaagat her triyeh neh aayo |

ਦੁਤਿਯ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਕੌ ਧਾਯੋ ॥੪॥

dutiy triyaa ke ghar kau dhaayo |4|

When he found the lady still awake, he went to the house of the other.(4)

ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਜਾਨ︀ਯੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਤਿ ਆਏ ॥

triy jaanayo mere pat aae |

ਮਮ ਘਰ ਤੇ ਹਟਿ ਯਾ ਕੇ ਧਾਏ ॥

mam ghar te hatt yaa ke dhaae |

The first woman thought her husband had come back but, now, had gone to the other.

ਦੋਊ ਚਲੀ ਹਮ ਪਤਿਹਿ ਹਟੈ ਹੈ ॥

doaoo chalee ham patihi hattai hai |

ਮੋਰਿ ਆਪਨੇ ਧਾਮ ਲਯੈ ਹੈ ॥੫॥

mor aapane dhaam layai hai |5|

Both walked out to go and get the husband back to their own house.(5)
