First Mehl:

ਨਵ ਛਿਅ ਖਟ ਕਾ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

nav chhia khatt kaa kare beechaar |

You may study the nine grammars, the six Shaastras and the six divions of the Vedas.

ਨਿਸਿ ਦਿਨ ਉਚਰੈ ਭਾਰ ਅਠਾਰ ॥

nis din ucharai bhaar atthaar |

You may recite the Mahaabhaarata.

ਤਿਨਿ ਭੀ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੋਹਿ ॥

tin bhee ant na paaeaa tohi |

Even these cannot find the limits of the Lord.

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਣ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਉ ਹੋਇ ॥

naam bihoon mukat kiau hoe |

Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, how can anyone be liberated?

ਨਾਭਿ ਵਸਤ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੈ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥

naabh vasat brahamai ant na jaaniaa |

Brahma, in the lotus of the navel, does not know the limits of God.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ॥੩॥

guramukh naanak naam pachhaaniaa |3|

The Gurmukh, O Nanak, realizes the Naam. ||3||
