ਡੂੰਗਰੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਡਰਾਵਣੋ ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਡਰੀਆਸੁ ॥
ddoongar dekh ddaraavano peeearrai ddareeaas |
Beholding the terrifying mountain in this world of my father's home, I am terrified.
ਊਚਉ ਪਰਬਤੁ ਗਾਖੜੋ ਨਾ ਪਉੜੀ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਾਸੁ ॥
aoochau parabat gaakharro naa paurree tith taas |
It is so difficult to climb this high mountain; there is no ladder which reaches up there.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੀ ਤਰੀਆਸੁ ॥੧॥
guramukh antar jaaniaa gur melee tareeaas |1|
But as Gurmukh, I know that it is within my self; the Guru has brought me to Union, and so I cross over. ||1||
ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਡਰਾਂਉ ॥
bhaaee re bhavajal bikham ddaraanau |
O Siblings of Destiny, the terrifying world-ocean is so difficult to cross-I am terrified!
ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਰਸਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
pooraa satigur ras milai gur taare har naau |1| rahaau |
The Perfect True Guru, in His Pleasure, has met with me; the Guru has saved me, through the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਚਲਾ ਚਲਾ ਜੇ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
chalaa chalaa je karee jaanaa chalanahaar |
I may say, "I am going, I am going", but I know that, in the end, I must really go.
ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਸੋ ਚਲਸੀ ਅਮਰੁ ਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
jo aaeaa so chalasee amar su gur karataar |
Whoever comes must also go. Only the Guru and the Creator are Eternal.
ਭੀ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਸਚੈ ਥਾਨਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੨॥
bhee sachaa saalaahanaa sachai thaan piaar |2|
So praise the True One continually, and love His Place of Truth. ||2||
ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਪਕੇ ਕੋਟ ਹਜਾਰ ॥
dar ghar mahalaa sohane pake kott hajaar |
Beautiful gates, houses and palaces, solidly built forts,
ਹਸਤੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਪਾਖਰੇ ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
hasatee ghorre paakhare lasakar lakh apaar |
elephants, saddled horses, hundreds of thousands of uncounted armies
ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਸਾਰ ॥੩॥
kis hee naal na chaliaa khap khap mue asaar |3|
-none of these will go along with anyone in the end, and yet, the fools bother themselves to exhaustion with these, and then die. ||3||
ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਮਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ॥
sueinaa rupaa sancheeai maal jaal janjaal |
You may gather gold and sliver, but wealth is just a net of entanglement.
ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਦੋਹੀ ਫੇਰੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ॥
sabh jag meh dohee fereeai bin naavai sir kaal |
You may beat the drum and proclaim authority over the whole world, but without the Name, death hovers over your head.
ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪੜੈ ਜੀਉ ਖੇਲਸੀ ਬਦਫੈਲੀ ਕਿਆ ਹਾਲੁ ॥੪॥
pindd parrai jeeo khelasee badafailee kiaa haal |4|
When the body falls, the play of life is over; what shall be the condition of the evil-doers then? ||4||
ਪੁਤਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਵਿਗਸੀਐ ਨਾਰੀ ਸੇਜ ਭਤਾਰ ॥
putaa dekh vigaseeai naaree sej bhataar |
The husband is delighted seeing his sons, and his wife upon his bed.
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਲਾਈਐ ਕਾਪੜੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
choaa chandan laaeeai kaaparr roop seegaar |
He applies sandalwood and scented oils, and dresses himself in his beautiful clothes.
ਖੇਹੂ ਖੇਹ ਰਲਾਈਐ ਛੋਡਿ ਚਲੈ ਘਰ ਬਾਰੁ ॥੫॥
khehoo kheh ralaaeeai chhodd chalai ghar baar |5|
But dust shall mix with dust, and he shall depart, leaving hearth and home behind. ||5||
ਮਹਰ ਮਲੂਕ ਕਹਾਈਐ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਉ ਕਿ ਖਾਨੁ ॥
mehar malook kahaaeeai raajaa raau ki khaan |
He may be called a chief, an emperor, a king, a governor or a lord;
ਚਉਧਰੀ ਰਾਉ ਸਦਾਈਐ ਜਲਿ ਬਲੀਐ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ॥
chaudharee raau sadaaeeai jal baleeai abhimaan |
he may present himself as a leader or a chief, but this just burns him in the fire of egotistical pride.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਜਿਉ ਡਵਿ ਦਧਾ ਕਾਨੁ ॥੬॥
manamukh naam visaariaa jiau ddav dadhaa kaan |6|
The self-willed manmukh has forgotten the Naam. He is like straw, burning in the forest fire. ||6||
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਇਸੀ ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਜਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
haumai kar kar jaaeisee jo aaeaa jag maeh |
Whoever comes into the world and indulges in ego, must depart.
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਕਾਜਲ ਕੋਠੜੀ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੇਹ ਸੁਆਹਿ ॥
sabh jag kaajal kottharree tan man deh suaaeh |
The whole world is a store-house of lamp-black; the body and mind are blackened with it.
ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ਭਾਹਿ ॥੭॥
gur raakhe se niramale sabad nivaaree bhaeh |7|
Those who are saved by the Guru are immaculate and pure; through the Word of the Shabad, they extinguish the fire of desire. ||7||
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਰੀਐ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ॥
naanak tareeai sach naam sir saahaa paatisaahu |
O Nanak, they swim across with the True Name of the Lord, the King above the heads of kings.
ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥
mai har naam na veesarai har naam ratan vesaahu |
May I never forget the Name of the Lord! I have purchased the Jewel of the Lord's Name.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਉਜਲਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੇ ਅਥਾਹੁ ॥੮॥੧੬॥
manamukh bhaujal pach mue guramukh tare athaahu |8|16|
The self-willed manmukhs putrefy and die in the terrifying world-ocean, while the Gurmukhs cross over the bottomless ocean. ||8||16||
