Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:

ਸੂਰਤਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਨ ਭੂਲੁ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥

soorat dekh na bhool gavaaraa |

Do not be fooled by appearances, you fool.

ਮਿਥਨ ਮੋਹਾਰਾ ਝੂਠੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥

mithan mohaaraa jhootth pasaaraa |

This is a false attachment to the expanse of an illusion.

ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਕੋਈ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣਾ ॥੧॥

jag meh koee rehan na paae nihachal ek naaraaeinaa |1|

No one can remain in this world; only the One Lord is permanent and unchanging. ||1||

ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਪਉ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥

gur poore kee pau saranaaee |

Seek the Sanctuary of the Perfect Guru.

ਮੋਹੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਸਭੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਮਿਟਾਈ ॥

mohu sog sabh bharam mittaaee |

He shall eradicate all emotional attachment, sorrow and doubt.

ਏਕੋ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ਅਉਖਧੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦ ਗਾਇਣਾ ॥੨॥

eko mantru drirraae aaukhadh sach naam rid gaaeinaa |2|

He shall administer the medicine, the Mantra of the One Name. Sing the True Name within your heart. ||2||

ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਮੈ ਕਉ ਤਰਸਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਦੇਵਾ ॥

jis naamai kau taraseh bahu devaa |

So many gods yearn for the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਸਗਲ ਭਗਤ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਸੇਵਾ ॥

sagal bhagat jaa kee karade sevaa |

All the devotees serve Him.

ਅਨਾਥਾ ਨਾਥੁ ਦੀਨ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਸੋ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਣਾ ॥੩॥

anaathaa naath deen dukh bhanjan so gur poore te paaeinaa |3|

He is the Master of the masterless, the Destroyer of the pains of the poor. His Name is obtained from the Perfect Guru. ||3||

ਹੋਰੁ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ॥

hor duaaraa koe na soojhai |

I cannot conceive of any other door.

ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਧਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ॥

tribhavan dhaavai taa kichhoo na boojhai |

One who wanders through the three worlds, understands nothing.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਹੁ ਭੰਡਾਰੁ ਨਾਮ ਜਿਸੁ ਇਹੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਣਾ ॥੪॥

satigur saahu bhanddaar naam jis ihu ratan tisai te paaeinaa |4|

The True Guru is the banker, with the treasure of the Naam. This jewel is obtained from Him. ||4||

ਜਾ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪੁਨੀਤਾ ॥

jaa kee dhoor kare puneetaa |

The dust of His feet purifies.

ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਦੇਵ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮੀਤਾ ॥

sur nar dev na paaveh meetaa |

Even the angelic beings and gods cannot obtain it, O friend.

ਸਤਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਭੇਟਤ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰਾਇਣਾ ॥੫॥

sat purakh satigur paramesar jis bhettat paar paraaeinaa |5|

The True Guru is the True Primal Being, the Transcendent Lord God; meeting with Him, one is carried across to the other side. ||5||

ਪਾਰਜਾਤੁ ਲੋੜਹਿ ਮਨ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

paarajaat lorreh man piaare |

O my beloved mind, if you wish for the 'tree of life';

ਕਾਮਧੇਨੁ ਸੋਹੀ ਦਰਬਾਰੇ ॥

kaamadhen sohee darabaare |

if you wish for Kaamadhayna, the wish-fulfilling cow to adorn your court;

ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਮਾਇ ਰਸਾਇਣਾ ॥੬॥

tripat santokh sevaa gur poore naam kamaae rasaaeinaa |6|

if you wish to be satisfied and contented, then serve the Perfect Guru, and practice the Naam, the source of nectar. ||6||

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਪੰਚ ਧਾਤੂ ॥

gur kai sabad mareh panch dhaatoo |

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the five thieves of desire are conquered.

ਭੈ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਤੂ ॥

bhai paarabraham hoveh niramalaa too |

In the Fear of the Supreme Lord God, you shall become immaculate and pure.

ਪਾਰਸੁ ਜਬ ਭੇਟੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਤਾ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਣਾ ॥੭॥

paaras jab bhettai gur pooraa taa paaras paras dikhaaeinaa |7|

When one meets the Perfect Guru, the Philosopher's Stone, His touch reveals the Lord, the Philosopher's Stone. ||7||

ਕਈ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਨਾਹੀ ਲਵੈ ਲਾਗੇ ॥

kee baikuntth naahee lavai laage |

Myriads of heavens do not equal the Lord's Name.

ਮੁਕਤਿ ਬਪੁੜੀ ਭੀ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਤਿਆਗੇ ॥

mukat bapurree bhee giaanee tiaage |

The spiritually wise forsake mere liberation.

ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸਾਇਣਾ ॥੮॥

ekankaar satigur te paaeeai hau bal bal gur darasaaeinaa |8|

The One Universal Creator Lord is found through the True Guru. I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice to the Blessed Vision of the Guru's Darshan. ||8||

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥

gur kee sev na jaanai koee |

No one knows how to serve the Guru.

ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਸੋਈ ॥

gur paarabraham agochar soee |

The Guru is the unfathomable, Supreme Lord God.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਲਾਇ ਲਏ ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਡਭਾਗ ਮਥਾਇਣਾ ॥੯॥

jis no laae le so sevak jis vaddabhaag mathaaeinaa |9|

He alone is the Guru's servant, whom the Guru Himself links to His service, and upon whose forehead such blessed destiny is inscribed. ||9||

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਬੇਦ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ॥

gur kee mahimaa bed na jaaneh |

Even the Vedas do not know the Guru's Glory.

ਤੁਛ ਮਾਤ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ॥

tuchh maat sun sun vakhaaneh |

They narrate only a tiny bit of what is heard.

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਅਪਰੰਪਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲਾਇਣਾ ॥੧੦॥

paarabraham aparanpar satigur jis simarat man seetalaaeinaa |10|

The True Guru is the Supreme Lord God, the Incomparable One; meditating in remembrance on Him, the mind is cooled and soothed. ||10||

ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸੋਇ ਸੁਣੀ ਮਨੁ ਜੀਵੈ ॥

jaa kee soe sunee man jeevai |

Hearing of Him, the mind comes to life.

ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸੈ ਤਾ ਠੰਢਾ ਥੀਵੈ ॥

ridai vasai taa tthandtaa theevai |

When He dwells within the heart, one becomes peaceful and cool.

ਗੁਰੁਮੁਖਹੁ ਅਲਾਏ ਤਾ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਮ ਕੈ ਪੰਥਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਣਾ ॥੧੧॥

gurumukhahu alaae taa sobhaa paae tis jam kai panth na paaeinaa |11|

Chanting the Guru's Name with the mouth, one obtains glory, and does not have to walk on the Path of Death. ||11||

ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਪੜਿਆ ॥

santan kee saranaaee parriaa |

I have entered the Sanctuary of the Saints,

ਜੀਉ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਧਨੁ ਆਗੈ ਧਰਿਆ ॥

jeeo praan dhan aagai dhariaa |

and placed before them my soul, my breath of life and wealth.

ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਕਾਈ ਤੁਮ ਕਰਹੁ ਦਇਆ ਕਿਰਮਾਇਣਾ ॥੧੨॥

sevaa surat na jaanaa kaaee tum karahu deaa kiramaaeinaa |12|

I know nothing about service and awareness; please take pity upon this worm. ||12||

ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਕਉ ਸੰਗਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਰਲਾਏ ॥

niragun kau sang lehu ralaae |

I am unworthy; please merge me into Yourself.

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਮੋਹਿ ਟਹਲੈ ਲਾਏ ॥

kar kirapaa mohi ttahalai laae |

Please bless me with Your Grace, and link me to Your service.

ਪਖਾ ਫੇਰਉ ਪੀਸਉ ਸੰਤ ਆਗੈ ਚਰਣ ਧੋਇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਣਾ ॥੧੩॥

pakhaa ferau peesau sant aagai charan dhoe sukh paaeinaa |13|

I wave the fan, and grind the corn for the Saints; washing their feet, I find peace. ||13||

ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਆਰੇ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਇਆ ॥

bahut duaare bhram bhram aaeaa |

After wandering around at so many doors, I have come to Yours, O Lord.

ਤੁਮਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੇ ਤੁਮ ਸਰਣਾਇਆ ॥

tumaree kripaa te tum saranaaeaa |

By Your Grace, I have entered Your Sanctuary.

ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸੰਤਹ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਏਹੁ ਨਾਮ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਵਾਇਣਾ ॥੧੪॥

sadaa sadaa santah sang raakhahu ehu naam daan devaaeinaa |14|

Forever and ever, keep me in the Company of the Saints; please bless me with this Gift of Your Name. ||14||

ਭਏ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਗੁਸਾਈ ਮੇਰੇ ॥

bhe kripaal gusaaee mere |

My World-Lord has become merciful,

ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ॥

darasan paaeaa satigur poore |

and I have obtained the Blessed Vision of the Darshan of the Perfect True Guru.

ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਸਦਾ ਆਨੰਦਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਦਸਾਇਣਾ ॥੧੫॥੨॥੭॥

sookh sehaj sadaa aanandaa naanak daas dasaaeinaa |15|2|7|

I have found eternal peace, poise and bliss; Nanak is the slave of Your slaves. ||15||2||7||
