ਜਬ ਦਿਜ ਐਸ ਬਖਾਨੀ ਬਾਨੀ ॥

jab dij ais bakhaanee baanee |

ਭੂਪਤਿ ਸਹਤ ਨ ਜਾਨ︀ਯੋ ਰਾਨੀ ॥

bhoopat sehat na jaanayo raanee |

When the Brahmin uttered these words, the king along with the queen could not understand its import.

ਪੈਰ ਅਢਾਇ ਭੂੰਮਿ ਦੇ ਕਹੀ ॥

pair adtaae bhoonm de kahee |

ਦ੍ਰਿੜ ਕਰਿ ਬਾਤ ਦਿਜੋਤਮ ਗਹੀ ॥੮॥

drirr kar baat dijotam gahee |8|

That Brahmin again said the same thing with determination that he had asked only for two and a half steps of the earth.8.

ਦਿਜਬਰ ਸੁਕ੍ਰ ਹੁਤੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਤੀਰਾ ॥

dijabar sukr huto nrip teeraa |

ਜਾਨ ਗਯੋ ਸਭ ਭੇਦੁ ਵਜੀਰਾ ॥

jaan gayo sabh bhed vajeeraa |

Shukracharya, the preceptor of the king was with him at that time, and he alongwith all the ministers comprehended the mystery of asking only for earth.

ਜਿਯੋ ਜਿਯੋ ਦੇਨ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਵੀ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਹੈ ॥

jiyo jiyo den prithavee nrip kahai |

ਤਿਮੁ ਤਿਮੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਪੁਰੋਹਿਤ ਗਹੈ ॥੯॥

tim tim naeh purohit gahai |9|

As many times the king orders for the donation of the earth, for so many times the preceptor Shukracharya asks him not to agree to it.9.

ਜਬ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਦੇਨ ਧਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਕੀਨਾ ॥

jab nrip den dharaa man keenaa |

ਤਬ ਹੀ ਉਤਰ ਸੁਕ੍ਰ ਇਮ ਦੀਨਾ ॥

tab hee utar sukr im deenaa |

But when the king made up his mind firmly to give the required earth as alms, then Shukracharya giving his reply said this to the king,

ਲਘੁ ਦਿਜ ਯਾਹਿ ਨ ਭੂਪ ਪਛਾਨੋ ॥

lagh dij yaeh na bhoop pachhaano |

ਬਿਸਨੁ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਇਸੀ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੋ ॥੧੦॥

bisan avataar isee kar maano |10|

“O king! do not consider him a small-sized Brahmin, consider him only as an incarnation of Vishnu.”10.

ਸੁਨਤ ਬਚਨ ਦਾਨਵ ਸਭ ਹਸੇ ॥

sunat bachan daanav sabh hase |

ਉਚਰਤ ਸੁਕ੍ਰ ਕਹਾ ਘਰਿ ਬਸੇ ॥

aucharat sukr kahaa ghar base |

Hearing this, all the demons laughed and said: “Shukracharya is only thinking of useless thing,”

ਸਸਿਕ ਸਮਾਨ ਨ ਦਿਜ ਮਹਿ ਮਾਸਾ ॥

sasik samaan na dij meh maasaa |

ਕਸ ਕਰਹੈ ਇਹ ਜਗ ਬਿਨਾਸਾ ॥੧੧॥

kas karahai ih jag binaasaa |11|

“The Brahmin, whose body doth not contain the flesh more than a rabbit, how can he destroy the world?”11.
