Chaupaee
ਚੋਰਹੁ ਹੋਇ ਪੂਤ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖੋ ॥
chorahu hoe poot kar raakho |
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਭਾਖੋ ॥
taa te kachhoo na mukh te bhaakho |
‘If thief came, we will keep him as our son and will say nothing more.
ਸਾਹੁਨਿ ਸਹਿਤ ਬਨਿਕ ਜਬ ਮਰਿ ਹੈ ॥
saahun sahit banik jab mar hai |
ਹਮਰੋ ਕਵਨ ਦਰਬੁ ਲੈ ਕਰਿ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
hamaro kavan darab lai kar hai |4|
‘If we are both dead, then what would happen to all this wealth. ?’( 4)
ਯਹ ਜਬ ਭਨਕ ਚੋਰ ਸੁਨਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
yeh jab bhanak chor sun paaee |
ਫੂਲਿ ਗਯੋ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਨ ਨਹਿ ਮਾਈ ॥
fool gayo basatran neh maaee |
When the thief heard their talk, his joy found no bounds,
ਜਾਇ ਬਨਿਕ ਕੋ ਪੂਤ ਕਹੈਹੋਂ ॥
jaae banik ko poot kahaihon |
ਯਾ ਕੈ ਮਰੇ ਸਕਲ ਧਨ ਲੈਹੋਂ ॥੫॥
yaa kai mare sakal dhan laihon |5|
(He thought,) ‘I will become the son of the Shah and after his death, I will own all the riches.’(5)
ਤਬ ਲੋ ਚੋਰ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਪਰ ਗਯੋ ॥
tab lo chor drisatt par gayo |
ਅਧਿਕ ਬਨਿਕ ਕੇ ਆਨੰਦ ਭਯੋ ॥
adhik banik ke aanand bhayo |
Then their eyes fell on the thief and they became very happy.
ਪਲ੍ਰਯੋ ਪਲੋਸ੍ਰਯੋ ਸੁਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਦੀਨੋ ॥
palrayo palosrayo sut bidh deeno |
ਤਾ ਕੋ ਪੂਤ ਪੂਤ ਕਹਿ ਲੀਨੋ ॥੬॥
taa ko poot poot keh leeno |6|
‘I have been endowed with a grown up son,’ and he then hugged him claiming ‘my son’, ‘my son.’(6)
ਖਾਟ ਉਪਰ ਤਸਕਰਹਿ ਬੈਠਾਯੋ ॥
khaatt upar tasakareh baitthaayo |
ਭਲੋ ਭਲੋ ਪਕਵਾਨ ਖਵਾਯੋ ॥
bhalo bhalo pakavaan khavaayo |
They made him to sit on the bed and served him dainty food.
ਪੂਤ ਪੂਤ ਕਹਿ ਸਾਹੁਨਿ ਧਾਈ ॥
poot poot keh saahun dhaaee |
ਸਾਹੁ ਚਉਤਰੇ ਜਾਇ ਜਤਾਈ ॥੭॥
saahu chautare jaae jataaee |7|
The Shah’s wife announcing, ‘My son, my son.’ went around and informed everybody.(7)
