Bilaaval, Fourth Mehl:
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੀਤਲ ਜਲੁ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਚੰਦਨ ਵਾਸੁ ਸੁਗੰਧ ਗੰਧਈਆ ॥
har har naam seetal jal dhiaavahu har chandan vaas sugandh gandheea |
Meditate on the cool water of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. Perfume yourself with the fragrant scent of the Lord, the sandalwood tree.
ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੈ ਹਿਰਡ ਪਲਾਸ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਬੁਹੀਆ ॥੧॥
mil satasangat param pad paaeaa mai hiradd palaas sang har buheea |1|
Joining the Society of the Saints, I have obtained the supreme status. I am just a castor-oil tree, made fragrant by their association. ||1||
ਜਪਿ ਜਗੰਨਾਥ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਗੁਸਈਆ ॥
jap jaganaath jagadees guseea |
Meditate on the Lord of the Universe, the Master of the world, the Lord of creation.
ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਸੇਈ ਜਨ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਉਧਾਰਿ ਸਮਈਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saran pare seee jan ubare jiau prahilaad udhaar sameea |1| rahaau |
Those humble beings who seek the Lord's Sanctuary are saved, like Prahlaad; they are emancipated and merge with the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਭਾਰ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਮਹਿ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਊਤਮ ਚੰਦਨ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਸਭ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਹੁਈਆ ॥
bhaar atthaarah meh chandan aootam chandan nikatt sabh chandan hueea |
Of all plants, the sandalwood tree is the most sublime. Everything near the sandalwood tree becomes fragrant like sandalwood.
ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜੇ ਊਭ ਸੁਕ ਹੂਏ ਮਨਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਦੂਰਿ ਗਈਆ ॥੨॥
saakat koorre aoobh suk hooe man abhimaan vichhurr door geea |2|
The stubborn, false faithless cynics are dried up; their egotistical pride separates them far from the Lord. ||2||
ਹਰਿ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭ ਬਿਧਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਬਨਈਆ ॥
har gat mit karataa aape jaanai sabh bidh har har aap baneea |
Only the Creator Lord Himself knows the state and condition of everyone; the Lord Himself makes all the arrangements.
ਜਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸੁ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਨ ਮਿਟਈਆ ॥੩॥
jis satigur bhette su kanchan hovai jo dhur likhiaa su mittai na mitteea |3|
One who meets the True Guru is transformed into gold. Whatever is pre-ordained, is not erased by erasing. ||3||
ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਾਗਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਖੁਲੑਈਆ ॥
ratan padaarath guramat paavai saagar bhagat bhanddaar khulaeea |
The treasure of jewels is found in the ocean of the Guru's Teachings. The treasure of devotional worship is opened to me.
ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਇਕ ਸਰਧਾ ਉਪਜੀ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਭਈਆ ॥੪॥
gur charanee ik saradhaa upajee mai har gun kahate tripat na bheea |4|
Focused on the Guru's Feet, faith wells up within me; chanting the Glorious Praises of the Lord, I hunger for more. ||4||
ਪਰਮ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਏ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਤੇ ਭਾਵਨੀ ਕਹੀਆ ॥
param bairaag nit nit har dhiaae mai har gun kahate bhaavanee kaheea |
I am totally detached, continually, continuously meditating on the Lord; chanting the Glorious Praises of the Lord, I express my love for Him.
ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਪਰੈ ਪਰਈਆ ॥੫॥
baar baar khin khin pal kaheeai har paar na paavai parai pareea |5|
Time and time again, each and every moment and instant, I express it. I cannot find the Lord's limits; He is the farthest of the far. ||5||
ਸਾਸਤ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੁਕਾਰਹਿ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਈਆ ॥
saasat bed puraan pukaareh dharam karahu khatt karam drirreea |
The Shaastras, the Vedas and the Puraanas advise righteous actions, and the performance of the six religious rituals.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਵਿਗੂਤੇ ਲੋਭ ਲਹਰਿ ਨਾਵ ਭਾਰਿ ਬੁਡਈਆ ॥੬॥
manamukh paakhandd bharam vigoote lobh lehar naav bhaar buddeea |6|
The hypocritical, self-willed manmukhs are ruined by doubt; in the waves of greed, their boat is heavily loaded, and it sinks. ||6||
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਨਾਮੇ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਈਆ ॥
naam japahu naame gat paavahu simrit saasatr naam drirreea |
So chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and through the Naam, find emancipation. The Simritees and Shaastras recommend the Naam.
ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਤ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਚੈ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਈਆ ॥੭॥
haumai jaae ta niramal hovai guramukh parachai param pad peea |7|
Eradicating egotism, one becomes pure. The Gurmukh is inspired, and obtains the supreme status. ||7||
ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਵਰਨੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਈਆ ॥
eihu jag varan roop sabh teraa jit laaveh se karam kameea |
This world, with its colors and forms, is all Yours, O Lord; as You attach us, so do we do our deeds.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੰਤ ਵਜਾਏ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਰਾਹਿ ਚਲਈਆ ॥੮॥੨॥੫॥
naanak jant vajaae vaajeh jit bhaavai tith raeh chaleea |8|2|5|
O Nanak, we are the instruments upon which He plays; as He wills, so is the path we take. ||8||2||5||
