Chaupaee

ਦੁਹਿਤਾ ਏਕ ਜਾਟ ਉਪਜਾਈ ॥

duhitaa ek jaatt upajaaee |

ਮਾਗਤ ਭੀਖਿ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਆਈ ॥

maagat bheekh hamaare aaee |

There was a daughter of a Jat, the peasant, she came to us for begging.

ਬਿੰਦੋ ਅਪਨੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖਾਯੋ ॥

bindo apano naam rakhaayo |

ਚੇਰਿਨ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਦ੍ਰੋਹ ਬਢਾਯੋ ॥੧॥

cherin ke sang droh badtaayo |1|

She called herself as Bindo; she was an accomplice of the thieves.(1)

ਡੋਲਾ ਮਾਟੀ ਕੋ ਤਿਨ ਲਯੋ ॥

ddolaa maattee ko tin layo |

ਤਾ ਮੈ ਡਾਰਿ ਸਰਸਵਹਿ ਦਯੋ ॥

taa mai ddaar sarasaveh dayo |

She took an earthen-pitcher and put in it linseeds.

ਚਾਰਿ ਮੇਖ ਲੋਹਾ ਕੀ ਡਾਰੀ ॥

chaar mekh lohaa kee ddaaree |

ਦਾਬਿ ਗਈ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਪਿਛਵਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

daab gee taa kee pichhavaaree |2|

After putting four nails in it, she buried it (at the back ofthe place).(2)

ਆਪ ਰਾਵ ਤਨ ਆਨਿ ਜਤਾਯੋ ॥

aap raav tan aan jataayo |

ਇਕੁ ਟੌਨਾ ਇਹ ਕਰ ਮਮ ਆਯੋ ॥

eik ttauanaa ih kar mam aayo |

She came and told the Raja, ‘Some maid has performed an incantation.

ਜੋ ਤੁਮ ਕਹੋ ਤੋ ਆਨਿ ਦਿਖਾਊ ॥

jo tum kaho to aan dikhaaoo |

ਕਛੁ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਆਗ︀ਯਾ ਤਵ ਪਾਊ ॥੩॥

kachh mukh te aagayaa tav paaoo |3|

‘If you desire and order yourself, and I will display it to you.’(3)

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਆਨਿ ਦਿਖਾਇ ਦਿਖਾਯੋ ॥

nrip kahiyo aan dikhaae dikhaayo |

ਸਭਹਿਨ ਕੇ ਚਿਤ ਭਰਮੁਪਜਾਯੋ ॥

sabhahin ke chit bharamupajaayo |

She took Raja and showed him and put all the people in whim.

ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਸਭਹੂੰਨ ਬਖਾਨ︀ਯੋ ॥

sat sat sabhahoon bakhaanayo |

ਤਾ ਕੋ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਜਾਨ︀ਯੋ ॥੪॥

taa ko bhed na kinahoon jaanayo |4|

She proved it to be true and none could acquiesce her trick.(4)

ਇਹ ਚੁਗਲੀ ਜਿਹ ਊਪਰ ਖਾਈ ॥

eih chugalee jih aoopar khaaee |

ਸੋ ਚੇਰੀ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਪਕਰਿ ਮੰਗਾਈ ॥

so cheree nripaa pakar mangaaee |

When the backbiting reacted, the Raja summoned that maid.

ਕੁਰਰਨ ਮਾਰਿ ਅਧਿਕ ਤਿਹ ਮਾਰੀ ॥

kuraran maar adhik tih maaree |

ਸੀ ਨ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਨੈਕ ਉਚਾਰੀ ॥੫॥

see na mukh te naik uchaaree |5|

She was beaten with whips but she did not murmur.(5)

ਮਾਰਿ ਪਰੀ ਵਹ ਨੈਕੁ ਨ ਮਾਨ︀ਯੋ ॥

maar paree veh naik na maanayo |

ਯਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਹਠੀ ਰਾਵਹੂੰ ਜਾਨ︀ਯੋ ॥

yeh triy hatthee raavahoon jaanayo |

In spite of beating she did not confess and the Raja thought she was stubborn.

ਦਿਬ ਕੀ ਬਾਤ ਚਲਨ ਜਬ ਲਾਗੀ ॥

dib kee baat chalan jab laagee |

ਆਧੀ ਰਾਤਿ ਗਏ ਤਬ ਭਾਗੀ ॥੬॥

aadhee raat ge tab bhaagee |6|

At the night when they were discussing, she ran away.(6)

ਭੇਜਿ ਮਨੁਖ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਪਕਰਿ ਮੰਗਾਈ ॥

bhej manukh nrip pakar mangaaee |

ਏਕ ਕੋਠਰੀ ਮੈ ਰਖਵਾਈ ॥

ek kottharee mai rakhavaaee |

The Raja sent guards to catch her and put her in the cell.

ਬਿਖੁ ਕੋ ਖਾਨਾ ਤਾਹਿ ਖਵਾਯੋ ॥

bikh ko khaanaa taeh khavaayo |

ਵਾਹਿ ਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਕੇ ਧਾਮ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥੭॥

vaeh mrit ke dhaam patthaayo |7|

He made her to take poison and dispatched her to the domain of death.(7)(1)
