CHAUPAI

ਹਸਿ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਇਹ ਬਾਤ ਬਖਾਨੀ ॥

has bhoopat ih baat bakhaanee |

ਸੁਨਹੋ ਸੁਕ੍ਰ ਤੁਮ ਬਾਤ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ ॥

sunaho sukr tum baat na jaanee |

The king Bali, laughingly, said these words to Shukracharya: “O Shukracharya! You are not comprehending it, I shall not regain such an occasion,

ਫੁਨਿ ਇਹ ਸਮੋ ਸਭੋ ਛਲ ਜੈ ਹੈ ॥

fun ih samo sabho chhal jai hai |

ਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਫੇਰਿ ਨ ਭਿਛਕ ਐ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥

har so fer na bhichhak ai hai |13|

“Because I shall not be able to get such a God-like beggar again.”13.

ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਬਾਤ ਇਹੈ ਠਹਰਾਈ ॥

man meh baat ihai tthaharaaee |

ਮਨ ਮੋ ਧਰੀ ਨ ਕਿਸੂ ਬਤਾਈ ॥

man mo dharee na kisoo bataaee |

The King decided this general notion in his mind, but perceptibly he did not divulge it to anyone.

ਭ੍ਰਿਤ ਤੇ ਮਾਗ ਕਮੰਡਲ ਏਸਾ ॥

bhrit te maag kamanddal esaa |

ਲਗ︀ਯੋ ਦਾਨ ਤਿਹ ਦੇਨ ਨਰੇਸਾ ॥੧੪॥

lagayo daan tih den naresaa |14|

He asked the medicant to give his pot, in order to enact such a base deed.14.

ਸੁਕ੍ਰ ਬਾਤ ਮਨ ਮੋ ਪਹਿਚਾਨੀ ॥

sukr baat man mo pahichaanee |

ਭੇਦ ਨ ਲਹਤ ਭੂਪ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ॥

bhed na lehat bhoop agiaanee |

Shukracharya understood the notion of the mind of the King, but the ignorant King could not comprehend it.

ਧਾਰਿ ਮਕਰਿ ਕੇ ਜਾਰ ਸਰੂਪਾ ॥

dhaar makar ke jaar saroopaa |

ਪੈਠਿਯੋ ਮਧ ਕਮੰਡਲ ਭੂਪਾ ॥੧੫॥

paitthiyo madh kamanddal bhoopaa |15|

Shukracharya transformed himself into a small fish and seated himself in the mendicant’s pot.15.

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਬਰ ਪਾਨਿ ਸੁਰਾਹੀ ਲਈ ॥

nrip bar paan suraahee lee |

ਦਾਨ ਸਮੈ ਦਿਜਬਰ ਕੀ ਭਈ ॥

daan samai dijabar kee bhee |

The King took the mendicant’s pot in his hand and the time forgiving alms to the Brahmin arrived.

ਦਾਨ ਹੇਤ ਜਬ ਹਾਥ ਚਲਾਯੋ ॥

daan het jab haath chalaayo |

ਨਿਕਸ ਨੀਰ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਨ ਆਯੋ ॥੧੬॥

nikas neer kar taeh na aayo |16|

When the King in order to give alms took some water in his hand, no water came out of the pot.16.
