ਉਤਰ ਦੇਸ ਰਾਵ ਇਕ ਭਾਰੋ ॥

ਸੂਰਜ ਬੰਸ ਮਾਝ ਉਜਿਯਾਰੋ ॥

sooraj bans maajh ujiyaaro |

In a country in the North, there lived a Raja who belonged to Sun clan.

ਰੂਪ ਮਤੀ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਬਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

roop matee taa kee bar naaree |

ਜਨੁਕ ਚੀਰਿ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਨਿਕਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

januk cheer chandramaa nikaaree |1|

Roop Mati was his wife; she was the embodiment of Moon.(1)

ਵਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਏਕ ਨੀਚ ਸੋ ਰਹੈ ॥

veh triy ek neech so rahai |

ਅਧਿਕ ਨਿੰਦ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਜਗ ਕਹੈ ॥

adhik nind taa kee jag kahai |

That woman was implicated with a low character and the whole world criticised her.

ਇਹ ਬਿਰਤਾਤ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਜਬ ਸੁਨ︀ਯੋ ॥

eih birataat nripat jab sunayo |

ਅਧਿਕ ਕੋਪ ਕਰਿ ਮਸਤਕ ਧੁਨ੍ਰਯੋ ॥੨॥

adhik kop kar masatak dhunrayo |2|

When Raja came to know of this, he shook his head (in dismay).(2)

ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੀ ਲਾਗ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਹੂੰ ਕਰੀ ॥

triy kee laag nripat hoon karee |

ਬਾਤੈ ਕਰਤ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਮਹਿ ਪਰੀ ॥

baatai karat drisatt meh paree |

When Raja investigated, he found her communicating with that man.

ਤਾ ਦਿਨ ਤੇ ਤਾ ਸੌ ਹਿਤ ਤ︀ਯਾਗਿਯੋ ॥

taa din te taa sau hit tayaagiyo |

ਅਵਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਨ ਕੇ ਰਸ ਅਨੁਰਾਗਿਯੋ ॥੩॥

avar triyan ke ras anuraagiyo |3|

He abandoned adoring her and became the lover of some other ladies.(3)

ਅਵਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਨ ਸੌ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਈ ॥

avar triyan sau preet lagaaee |

ਤਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸੌ ਦਿਯ ਨੇਹ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥

taa triy sau diy neh bhulaaee |

While revelling’ with other women he totally disregarded her affections.

ਤਾ ਕੇ ਧਾਮ ਨਿਤ︀ਯ ਚਲਿ ਆਵੈ ॥

taa ke dhaam nitay chal aavai |

ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਠਾਨਿ ਨਹਿ ਕੇਲ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥੪॥

preet tthaan neh kel kamaavai |4|

He would come to her house every day, would show fondness but would not revel in making love.(4)
