ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:

ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਹੋਛੈ ਰਸਿ ਮਾਤਾ ॥

har ras chhodd hochhai ras maataa |

Forsaking the Lord's sublime essence, the mortal is intoxicated with false essences.

ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥੧॥

ghar meh vasat baahar utth jaataa |1|

The substance is within the home of the self, but the mortal goes out to find it. ||1||

ਸੁਨੀ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਸਚੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਾਥਾ ॥

sunee na jaaee sach amrit kaathaa |

He cannot hear the true ambrosial discourse.

ਰਾਰਿ ਕਰਤ ਝੂਠੀ ਲਗਿ ਗਾਥਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

raar karat jhootthee lag gaathaa |1| rahaau |

Attached to false scriptures, he is engaged in argument. ||1||Pause||

ਵਜਹੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਾ ਸੇਵ ਬਿਰਾਨੀ ॥

vajahu saahib kaa sev biraanee |

He takes his wages from his Lord and Master, but he serves another.

ਐਸੇ ਗੁਨਹ ਅਛਾਦਿਓ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ॥੨॥

aise gunah achhaadio praanee |2|

With such sins, the mortal is engrossed. ||2||

ਤਿਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਕ ਜੋ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਸੰਗੀ ॥

tis siau look jo sad hee sangee |

He tries to hide from the One who is always with him.

ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਸੋ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਮੰਗੀ ॥੩॥

kaam na aavai so fir fir mangee |3|

He begs from Him, again and again. ||3||

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥

kahu naanak prabh deen deaalaa |

Says Nanak, God is merciful to the meek.

ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ ॥੪॥੨੨॥

jiau bhaavai tiau kar pratipaalaa |4|22|

As it pleases Him, He cherishes us. ||4||22||
