ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

maajh mahalaa 3 |

Maajh, Third Mehl:

ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਸੁ ਮੁਆ ਜਾਪੈ ॥

sabad marai su muaa jaapai |

One who dies in the Word of the Shabad is truly dead.

ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਚਾਪੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਸੰਤਾਪੈ ॥

kaal na chaapai dukh na santaapai |

Death does not crush him, and pain does not afflict him.

ਜੋਤੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥

jotee vich mil jot samaanee sun man sach samaavaniaa |1|

His light merges and is absorbed into the Light, when he hears and merges in the Truth. ||1||

ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਇ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥

hau vaaree jeeo vaaree har kai naae sobhaa paavaniaa |

I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to the Lord's Name, which brings us to glory.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਚਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

satigur sev sach chit laaeaa guramatee sehaj samaavaniaa |1| rahaau |

One who serves the True Guru, and focuses his consciousness on Truth, following the Guru's Teachings, is absorbed in intuitive peace and poise. ||1||Pause||

ਕਾਇਆ ਕਚੀ ਕਚਾ ਚੀਰੁ ਹੰਢਾਏ ॥

kaaeaa kachee kachaa cheer handtaae |

This human body is transitory, and transitory are the garments it wears.

ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੀ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥

doojai laagee mehal na paae |

Attached to duality, no one attains the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਲਦੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਬਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥

anadin jaladee firai din raatee bin pir bahu dukh paavaniaa |2|

Night and day, day and night, they burn. Without her Husband Lord, the soul-bride suffers in terrible pain. ||2||

ਦੇਹੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਆਗੈ ਜਾਏ ॥

dehee jaat na aagai jaae |

Her body and her status shall not go with her to the world hereafter.

ਜਿਥੈ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਤਿਥੈ ਛੁਟੈ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਏ ॥

jithai lekhaa mangeeai tithai chhuttai sach kamaae |

Where she is called to answer for her account, there, she shall be emancipated only by true actions.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਧਨਵੰਤੇ ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥

satigur sevan se dhanavante aithai othai naam samaavaniaa |3|

Those who serve the True Guru shall prosper; here and hereafter, they are absorbed in the Naam. ||3||

ਭੈ ਭਾਇ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਬਣਾਏ ॥

bhai bhaae seegaar banaae |

She who adorns herself with the Love and the Fear of God,

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

gur parasaadee mehal ghar paae |

by Guru's Grace, obtains the Mansion of the Lord's Presence as her home.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਰਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਜੀਠੈ ਰੰਗੁ ਬਣਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥

anadin sadaa ravai din raatee majeetthai rang banaavaniaa |4|

Night and day, day and night, she constantly ravishes and enjoys her Beloved. She is dyed in the permanent color of His Love. ||4||

ਸਭਨਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਵਸੈ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਲੇ ॥

sabhanaa pir vasai sadaa naale |

The Husband Lord abides with everyone, always;

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੇ ॥

gur parasaadee ko nadar nihaale |

but how rare are those few who, by Guru's Grace, obtain His Glance of Grace.

ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਤਿ ਊਚੋ ਊਚਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥

meraa prabh at aoocho aoochaa kar kirapaa aap milaavaniaa |5|

My God is the Highest of the High; granting His Grace, He merges us into Himself. ||5||

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਸੁਤਾ ॥

maaeaa mohi ihu jag sutaa |

This world is asleep in emotional attachment to Maya.

ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਵਿਗੁਤਾ ॥

naam visaar ant vigutaa |

Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, it ultimately comes to ruin.

ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਸੁਤਾ ਸੋ ਜਾਗਾਏ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥

jis te sutaa so jaagaae guramat sojhee paavaniaa |6|

The One who put it to sleep shall also awaken it. Through the Guru's Teachings, understanding dawns. ||6||

ਅਪਿਉ ਪੀਐ ਸੋ ਭਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥

apiau peeai so bharam gavaae |

One who drinks in this Nectar, shall have his delusions dispelled.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥

gur parasaad mukat gat paae |

By Guru's Grace, the state of liberation is attained.

ਭਗਤੀ ਰਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਆਪੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥

bhagatee rataa sadaa bairaagee aap maar milaavaniaa |7|

One who is imbued with devotion to the Lord, remains always balanced and detached. Subduing selfishness and conceit, he is united with the Lord. ||7||

ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਏ ॥

aap upaae dhandhai laae |

He Himself creates, and He Himself assigns us to our tasks.

ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਆਪਿ ਅਪੜਾਏ ॥

lakh chauraasee rijak aap aparraae |

He Himself gives sustenance to the 8.4 million species of beings.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਸਚਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੪॥੫॥

naanak naam dhiaae sach raate jo tis bhaavai su kaar karaavaniaa |8|4|5|

O Nanak, those who meditate on the Naam are atuned to Truth. They do that which is pleasing to His Will. ||8||4||5||
