ੴ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਫ਼ਤਹ ॥
ik oankaar vaahiguroo jee kee fatah |
The Lord is One and the Victory is of the True Guru.
ਕਮਾਲਸ਼ ਕਰਾਮਾਤ ਆਜ਼ਮ ਕਰੀਮ ॥
kamaalash karaamaat aazam kareem |
He is absolute, divine, eminent, and compassionate.
ਰਜ਼ਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਰਾਜ਼ਕ ਰਹਾਕੋ ਰਹੀਮ ॥੧॥
razaa bakhash raazak rahaako raheem |1|
The destiny-prevailer, the sustainer, the eliminator of bondage and considerate.(1)
ਬ ਜਾਕਰ ਦਿਹੰਦ ਈਂ ਜ਼ਮੀਨੋ ਜ਼ਮਾਨ ॥
b jaakar dihand een zameeno zamaan |
To the devotees, He has endowed the earth, the sky.
ਮਲੂਕੋ ਮਲਾਯਕ ਹਮਹ ਆਂ ਜਹਾਨ ॥੨॥
malooko malaayak hamah aan jahaan |2|
The temporal world and the heavens.(2)
ਹਿਕਾਯਤ ਸ਼ੁਨੀਦੇਮ ਸ਼ਾਹੇ ਫ਼ਿਰੰਗ ॥
hikaayat shuneedem shaahe firang |
Now listen to the tale of a foreign emperor,
ਚੁ ਬਾ ਜ਼ਨਿ ਨਿਸ਼ਸਤੰਦ ਪੁਸ਼ਤੇ ਪਲੰਗ ॥੩॥
chu baa zan nishasatand pushate palang |3|
Who was sitting on the bedstead besides his wife.(3)
ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦ ਬਰ ਬਚਹ ਗੌਹਰ ਨਿਗ਼ਾਰ ॥
nazar karad bar bachah gauahar nigaar |
She looked out and saw the son of a jeweller,
ਬ ਦੀਦਨ ਹੁਮਾਯੂੰ ਜਵਾ ਉਸਤਵਾਰ ॥੪॥
b deedan humaayoon javaa usatavaar |4|
Who appeared to be very handsome and at the prime of his youth.(4)
ਬ ਵਕਤੇ ਸ਼ਬ ਓ ਰਾ ਬੁਖ਼ਾਦੰਦ ਪੇਸ਼ ॥
b vakate shab o raa bukhaadand pesh |
When the sun had set she summoned,
ਬ ਦੀਦਨ ਹੁਮਾਯੂੰ ਬ ਬਾਲਾਇ ਬੇਸ਼ ॥੫॥
b deedan humaayoon b baalaae besh |5|
The handsome boy, who was tall like a cypress tree.(5)
ਬਿਆਵੇਖ਼ਤ ਬਾ ਓ ਹਮਹ ਯਕ ਦਿਗਰ ॥
biaavekhat baa o hamah yak digar |
ਕਿ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਸ਼ਵਦ ਹੋਸ਼ ਹੈਬਤ ਹੁਨਰ ॥੬॥
ki zaahar shavad hosh haibat hunar |6|
ਯਕੇ ਮੂਇ ਚੀਂ ਰਾ ਬੁਖ਼ਾਦੰਦ ਪੇਸ਼ ॥
yake mooe cheen raa bukhaadand pesh |
They both (met,) embraced each other and blended into one,
ਕਿ ਅਜ਼ ਮੂਇ ਚੀਨੀ ਬਰਾਵੁਰਦ ਰੇਸ਼ ॥੭॥
ki az mooe cheenee baraavurad resh |7|
All their senses, uniqueness and attributes.(7)
ਬਰੋ ਹਰਕਿ ਬੀਨਦ ਨ ਦਾਨਦ ਸੁਖ਼ਨ ॥
baro harak beenad na daanad sukhan |
Any body who would see him, could not judge the reality,
ਕਿ ਅਜ਼ ਰੋਇ ਮਰਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਦਹ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਜ਼ਨ ॥੮॥
ki az roe marade shudah shakal zan |8|
As his male face had been disguised as female.(8)
ਬਿਦਾਨੰਦ ਹਰਕਸ ਕਿ ਈਂ ਹਮ ਜ਼ਨ ਅਸਤ ॥
bidaanand harakas ki een ham zan asat |
Every body conceded that he was a lady,
ਕਿ ਦਰ ਪੈਕਰੇ ਚੂੰ ਪਰੀ ਰੌਸ਼ਨ ਅਸਤ ॥੯॥
ki dar paikare choon paree rauashan asat |9|
And she was as pretty as the heavenly fairies.(9)
ਬ ਦੀਦੰਦ ਓ ਰਾ ਯਕੇ ਰੋਜ਼ ਸ਼ਾਹ ॥
b deedand o raa yake roz shaah |
One day the king saw her (him),
ਕਿ ਮਕਬੂਲ ਸੂਰਤ ਚੁ ਰਖ਼ਸ਼ਿੰਦਹ ਮਾਹ ॥੧੦॥
ki makabool soorat chu rakhashindah maah |10|
And complimented that her (his) features were enchanting like the moon in the sky.(10)
ਬਿ ਪੁਰਸ਼ੀਦ ਓ ਰਾ ਕਿ ਏ ਨੇਕ ਬਖ਼ਤ ॥
bi purasheed o raa ki e nek bakhat |
She (he) was, then, counselled, ‘You the lucky one,
ਸਜ਼ਾਵਾਰ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਅਸਤੁ ਸ਼ਾਯਾਨ ਤਖ਼ਤ ॥੧੧॥
sazaavaar shaah asat shaayaan takhat |11|
‘You are worthy of a king and fit to sit on the throne.’(11)
ਕਿ ਜ਼ਨ ਤੋ ਕਦਾਮੀ ਕਿਰਾ ਦੁਖ਼ਤਰੀ ॥
ki zan to kadaamee kiraa dukhataree |
‘Whose woman are you and whose daughter are you?
ਕਿ ਮੁਲਕੇ ਕਿਰਾ ਰੋ ਕਿਰਾ ਖ਼੍ਵਾਹਰੀ ॥੧੨॥
ki mulake kiraa ro kiraa khvaaharee |12|
‘Which country you belong to and whose sister are you?(12)
ਬ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਅੰਦਰੂੰ ਬਹਰਮੰਦ ਆਮਦਸ਼ ॥
b nazar andaroon baharamand aamadash |
‘You have penetrated the inner vision,
ਬ ਦੀਦਨ ਸ਼ਹੇ ਦਿਲ ਪਸੰਦ ਆਮਦਸ਼ ॥੧੩॥
b deedan shahe dil pasand aamadash |13|
‘And has the king fallen for you at the first sight.’(13)
ਕਨੀਜ਼ਕ ਯਕੇ ਰਾ ਬੁਖ਼ਾਦੰਦ ਪੇਸ਼ ॥
kaneezak yake raa bukhaadand pesh |
Through his maid, the king called her (him),
ਸ਼ਬੰ ਗਾਹਿ ਬੁਰਦਸ਼ ਦਰੂੰ ਖ਼ਾਨਹ ਖ਼ੇਸ਼ ॥੧੪॥
shaban gaeh buradash daroon khaanah khesh |14|
And asked her to bring her (him) to the inner chambers of his house.(14)
ਬਿਗੁਫ਼ਤਾ ਕਿ ਏ ਸਰਵ ਕਦ ਸੀਮ ਤਨ ॥
bigafataa ki e sarav kad seem tan |
(The king had said,) ‘Oh, my maid, I have come across an elegant like a cypress tree,
ਚਰਾਗ਼ੇ ਫ਼ਲਕ ਆਫ਼ਤਾਬੇ ਯਮਨ ॥੧੫॥
charaage falak aafataabe yaman |15|
‘Which looks like the moon fallen from the skies of Yaman.(15)
ਵਜ਼ਾ ਬਹਰ ਮਾ ਰਾ ਬ ਤਪਸ਼ੀਦ ਦਿਲ ॥
vazaa behar maa raa b tapasheed dil |
‘My heart is writhing for her,
ਕਿ ਮਾਹੀ ਬਿਅਫ਼ਤਾਦ ਅਜ਼ ਆਬ ਗਿਲ ॥੧੬॥
ki maahee biafataad az aab gil |16|
‘It is like fish flutters when it is thrown in a dirty puddle.(16)
ਬੁਰੋਏ ਸ਼ਬਾ ਪੈਕ ਗੁਲਜ਼ਾਰ ਮਾ ॥
buroe shabaa paik gulazaar maa |
‘Oh, you my maid-messenger, who are like a blooming flower,
ਕਿ ਦਰ ਪੇਸ਼ ਯਾਰੇ ਵਫ਼ਾਦਾਰ ਮਾ ॥੧੭॥
ki dar pesh yaare vafaadaar maa |17|
‘Go to the blossoming bud and bring her to me.(17)
ਤੁ ਗ਼ਰ ਪੇਸ਼ ਓ ਰਾ ਬਿਯਾਰੀ ਮਰਾ ॥
tu gar pesh o raa biyaaree maraa |
‘If you bring her to me for me,
ਕਿ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੇਮ ਸਰਬਸਤਹ ਗੰਜੇ ਤੁਰਾ ॥੧੮॥
ki bakhashem sarabasatah ganje turaa |18|
‘I will open up all the annuls of my treasures for you.’(18)
ਰਵਾ ਸ਼ੁਦ ਕਨੀਜ਼ਕ ਸ਼ੁਨੀਦ ਈਂ ਸੁਖ਼ਨ ॥
ravaa shud kaneezak shuneed een sukhan |
Harking to this the maidservant instantly departed,
ਬਿਗੋਯਦ ਸੁਖ਼ਨ ਰਾ ਜ਼ਿ ਸਰ ਤਾਬ ਬੁਨ ॥੧੯॥
bigoyad sukhan raa zi sar taab bun |19|
And narrated from head to tail of the whole conservation.(19)
ਜ਼ੁਬਾਨੀ ਕਨੀਜ਼ਕ ਸ਼ੁਨੀਦੀਂ ਸੁਖ਼ਨ ॥
zubaanee kaneezak shuneedeen sukhan |
When she (he) listened to the whole talk from the maid,
ਬ ਪੇਚੀਦ ਬਰ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਜ਼ਿ ਪੋਸ਼ਾਕ ਜ਼ਨ ॥੨੦॥
b pecheed bar khud zi poshaak zan |20|
Feeling topsy-turvy, he was overpowered with distress.(20)
ਕਿ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਕੁਨਾਨੀਦ ਅਸਬਾਬ ਖ਼ੇਸ਼ ॥
ki zaahar kunaaneed asabaab khesh |
(And thought,) ‘If I reveal my secret to the world,
ਕਿ ਦੀਦਨ ਜਹਾ ਰਾ ਬ ਕਿਰਦਾਰ ਖ਼ੇਸ਼ ॥੨੧॥
ki deedan jahaa raa b kiradaar khesh |21|
‘All my planning will be dismantled.(21)
ਬਖ਼ਾਹਦ ਮਰਾ ਸ਼ਾਹਿ ਏ ਯਾਰ ਮਾ ॥
bakhaaehad maraa shaeh e yaar maa |
‘Looking at my female attire, the king has fallen for me,
ਮਰਾ ਮਸਲਿਹਤ ਦਿਹ ਵਫ਼ਾਦਾਰ ਮਾ ॥੨੨॥
maraa masalihat dih vafaadaar maa |22|
‘Oh, my lady, please counsel me what to do?’(22)
ਤੁ ਗੋਈ ਮਨਈਂ ਜਾ ਗੁਰੇਜ਼ਾ ਸ਼ਵਮ ॥
tu goee maneen jaa gurezaa shavam |
‘If you say so, I will run away from this place.
ਕਿ ਇਮ ਰੋਜ਼ ਅਜ਼ ਜਾਇ ਖ਼ੇਜ਼ਾ ਸ਼ਵਮ ॥੨੩॥
ki im roz az jaae khezaa shavam |23|
‘Immediately, today, I take on my heels.’(23)
ਨ ਤਰਸੀ ਇਲਾਜੇ ਤੁਰਾ ਮਨ ਕੁਨਮ ॥
n tarasee ilaaje turaa man kunam |
(The Queen said,) ‘Don’t be afraid, I will tell you the remedy.
ਬ ਦੀਦਨ ਵਜ਼ਾ ਚਾਰ ਮਾਹੇ ਨਿਹਮ ॥੨੪॥
b deedan vazaa chaar maahe niham |24|
‘Even remaining under his observation, I will keep you for four months.’(24)
ਚੁ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਪੀਦ ਯਕ ਜਾਇ ਚੂੰ ਬੇ ਖ਼ਬਰ ॥
chu khushapeed yak jaae choon be khabar |
Then, they both went to the sleeping-place and went into a slumber,
ਖ਼ਬਰ ਗਸ਼ਤ ਸ਼ੁਦ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਓ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਨਰ ॥੨੫॥
khabar gashat shud shaah o sher nar |25|
And the news roamed around to the lion hearted king.(25)
ਦਹਾਨੇ ਕਨੀਜ਼ਕ ਸ਼ੁਨੀਦ ਈਂ ਸੁਖ਼ਨ ॥
dahaane kaneezak shuneed een sukhan |
The maid, then, conveyed the king what was happening,
ਬਜੁੰਬਸ਼ ਬਲਰਜ਼ੀਦ ਸਰ ਤਾਬ ਬੁਨ ॥੨੬॥
bajunbash balarazeed sar taab bun |26|
And the king flew into rage from head to feet.(26)
ਬਿਯਾਮਦ ਕਜ਼ੋ ਜਾਇ ਓ ਖ਼ੁਫ਼ਤਹ ਦੀਦ ॥
biyaamad kazo jaae o khufateh deed |
Instantly he came to the palace of the queen,
ਜ਼ਿ ਸਰਤਾ ਕਦਮ ਹਮ ਚੁ ਮਿਹਰਸ਼ ਤਪੀਦ ॥੨੭॥
zi sarataa kadam ham chu miharash tapeed |27|
And seeing them in the same bed, became inflammable like the sun.(27)
ਬਿਦਾਨਦ ਕਿ ਈਂ ਰਾ ਖ਼ਬਰਦਾਰ ਸ਼ੁਦ ॥
bidaanad ki een raa khabaradaar shud |
The king assumed that she had discerned his intentions,
ਬ ਰੋਜ਼ੇ ਅਜ਼ਾ ਈਂ ਖ਼ਬਰਦਾਰ ਸ਼ੁਦ ॥੨੮॥
b roze azaa een khabaradaar shud |28|
And had become very cautious.(28)
ਬਿਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਪੀਦ ਯਕ ਜਾ ਯਕੇ ਖ਼ਾਬ ਗਾਹ ॥
bikhushapeed yak jaa yake khaab gaah |
That is why they went into sleep at the same place and in the same bed.
ਮਰਾ ਦਾਵ ਅਫ਼ਤਦ ਨ ਯਜ਼ਦਾ ਗਵਾਹ ॥੨੯॥
maraa daav afatad na yazadaa gavaah |29|
‘God forbid, she made my attempt impossible.(29)
ਜੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੁਬੀਂਨਮ ਅਜ਼ ਈਂ ਖ਼ਾਬ ਗਾਹ ॥
judaagar bubeenam az een khaab gaah |
‘If I had found her alone in the bedroom,
ਯਕੇ ਜੁਫ਼ਤ ਬਾਸ਼ਮ ਚੁ ਖ਼ੁਰਸ਼ੈਦ ਮਾਹ ॥੩੦॥
yake jufat baasham chu khurashaid maah |30|
‘I would have at once clung to her as the moon merged into the sun.’(30)
ਵਜ਼ਾ ਰੋਜ਼ ਗਸ਼ਤਹ ਬਿਯਾਮਦ ਦਿਗਰ ॥
vazaa roz gashatah biyaamad digar |
The king returned that night lamenting,
ਹੁਮਾ ਖ਼ੁਫ਼ਤਹ ਦੀਦੰ ਯਕੇ ਜਾ ਬਬਰ ॥੩੧॥
humaa khufateh deedan yake jaa babar |31|
And the second day again he saw them sleeping in the same style.(31)
ਦਰੇਗ਼ਾ ਅਜ਼ੀਂ ਗਰ ਜੁਦਾ ਯਾਫ਼ਤਮ ॥
daregaa azeen gar judaa yaafatam |
‘Had I found her sleeping alone,
ਯਕੇ ਹਮਲਹ ਚੂੰ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਨਰ ਸਾਖ਼ਤਮ ॥੩੨॥
yake hamalah choon sher nar saakhatam |32|
‘I would have pounced upon her like a lion.’(32)
ਦਿਗ਼ਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਰਫ਼ਤਸ਼ ਸਿਯਮ ਆਮਦਸ਼ ॥
digar roz rafatash siyam aamadash |
He went away on the second day and again appeared on the third day.
ਬ ਦੀਦੰਦ ਯਕ ਜਾਇ ਬਰ ਤਾਫ਼ਤਸ਼ ॥੩੩॥
b deedand yak jaae bar taafatash |33|
As usual, seeing them together he departed.(33)
ਬ ਰੋਜ਼ੇ ਚੁ ਆਮਦ ਬ ਦੀਦੰਦ ਜੁਫ਼ਤ ॥
b roze chu aamad b deedand jufat |
On the fourth day they were joined together again.
ਬ ਹੈਰਤ ਫ਼ਰੋ ਰਫ਼ਤ ਬਾ ਦਿਲ ਬਿਗੁਫ਼ਤ ॥੩੪॥
b hairat faro rafat baa dil bigafat |34|
He hung his head in astonishment and thought,(34)
ਕਿ ਹੈਫ਼ ਅਸਤ ਆਂ ਰਾ ਜੁਦਾ ਯਾਫ਼ਤਮ ॥
ki haif asat aan raa judaa yaafatam |
‘Alas, if I had found her alone,
ਕਿ ਤੀਰੇ ਕਮਾ ਅੰਦਰੂੰ ਸਾਖ਼ਤਮ ॥੩੫॥
ki teere kamaa andaroon saakhatam |35|
‘I would have easily fixed arrow into her bow.’(35)
ਨ ਦੀਦੇਮ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨ ਨ ਦੋਜ਼ਨ ਬਤੀਰ ॥
n deedem dushaman na dozan bateer |
‘Neither I got hold of the enemy, nor could I pierce an arrow,
ਨ ਕੁਸ਼ਤਮ ਅਦੂਰਾ ਨ ਕਰਦਮ ਅਸੀਰ ॥੩੬॥
n kushatam adooraa na karadam aseer |36|
‘Neither I killed the enemy nor I captivated him.’(36)
ਸ਼ਸ਼ਮ ਰੋਜ਼ ਆਮਦ ਬ ਦੀਦਹ ਵਜ਼ਾ ॥
shasham roz aamad b deedah vazaa |
On the sixth day when he came he saw her sleeping with the queen in the similar manner.
ਬ ਪੇਚਸ਼ ਦਰਾਵਖ਼ਤ ਗੁਫ਼ਤ ਅਜ਼ ਜ਼ੁਬਾ ॥੩੭॥
b pechash daraavakhat gufat az zubaa |37|
He was extremely up set and said to himself,(37)
ਨ ਦੀਦੇਮ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨ ਕਿ ਰੇਜ਼ੇਮ ਖ਼ੂੰ ॥
n deedem dushaman ki rezem khoon |
‘If I don’t see my enemy, I won’t make him to shed his blood.
ਦਰੇਗਾ ਨ ਕੈਬਰ ਕਮਾ ਅੰਦਰੂੰ ॥੩੮॥
daregaa na kaibar kamaa andaroon |38|
‘Alas, I cannot keep my arrow contained in my bow.(38)
ਦਰੇਗ਼ਾ ਬ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨ ਨ ਆਵੇਖ਼ਤਮ ॥
daregaa b dushaman na aavekhatam |
‘And alas, I could not embrace the foe,
ਦਰੇਗਾ ਨਾ ਬਾ ਯਕ ਦਿਗ਼ਰ ਰੇਖ਼ਤਮ ॥੩੯॥
daregaa naa baa yak digar rekhatam |39|
‘And neither could we copulate each other.’(39)
ਹਕੀਕਤ ਸ਼ਨਾਸ਼ਦ ਨ ਹਾਲੇ ਦਿਗਰ ॥
hakeekat shanaashad na haale digar |
Blind in love he did not try to acquiesce the reality.
ਕਿ ਮਾਯਲ ਬਸੇ ਗਸ਼ਤ ਓ ਤਾਬ ਸਰ ॥੪੦॥
ki maayal base gashat o taab sar |40|
Neither, in excitement, he cared to learn the truth.(40)
ਬੁਬੀਂ ਬੇਖ਼ਬਰ ਰਾ ਚਕਾਰੇ ਕੁਨਦ ॥
bubeen bekhabar raa chakaare kunad |
Look, unaware what this king was doing,
ਕਿ ਕਾਰੇ ਬਦਸ਼ ਇਖ਼ਤਯਾਰੇ ਕੁਨਦ ॥੪੧॥
ki kaare badash ikhatayaare kunad |41|
And was scheming to revel in such vices.(41)
ਬੁਬੀਂ ਬੇ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਬਦ ਖ਼ਰਾਸ਼ੀ ਕੁਨਦ ॥
bubeen be khabar bad kharaashee kunad |
Look, an ignorant scratches his head,
ਕਿ ਬੇਆਬ ਸਰ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਤਰਾਸ਼ੀ ਕੁਨਦ ॥੪੨॥
ki beaab sar khud taraashee kunad |42|
And without wetting it, he shaves it.(42)
ਬਿਦਿਹ ਸਾਕੀਯਾ ਜਾਮ ਸਬਜ਼ੇ ਮਰਾ ॥
bidih saakeeyaa jaam sabaze maraa |
(The poet says,) ‘Oh the Saki, give me my green cup,
ਕਿ ਸਰਬਸਤਹ ਮਨ ਗੰਜ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਮ ਤੁਰਾ ॥੪੩॥
ki sarabasatah man ganj bakhasham turaa |43|
‘So that without any infringement, I get the understanding.(43)
ਬਿਦਿਹ ਸਾਕੀਯਾ੧ ਸਾਗ਼ਰੇ ਸਬਜ਼ ਫ਼ਾਮ ॥
bidih saakeeyaa1 saagare sabaz faam |
‘And give me the cup full of green (liquid),
ਕਿ ਖ਼ਸਮ ਅਫ਼ਕਨੋ ਵਕਤਹ ਸਤਸ਼ ਬ ਕਾਮ ॥੪੪॥੯॥
ki khasam afakano vakatah satash b kaam |44|9|
‘Which helps to destroy the enemies.(44)(9)
