Salok, First Mehl:

ਰਾਤੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਘਟੈ ਦਿਨਿ ਕਾਲੁ ॥

raatee kaal ghattai din kaal |

Through the night the time ticks away; through the day the time ticks away.

ਛਿਜੈ ਕਾਇਆ ਹੋਇ ਪਰਾਲੁ ॥

chhijai kaaeaa hoe paraal |

The body wears away and turns to straw.

ਵਰਤਣਿ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਸਰਬ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ॥

varatan varatiaa sarab janjaal |

All are involved and entangled in worldly entanglements.

ਭੁਲਿਆ ਚੁਕਿ ਗਇਆ ਤਪ ਤਾਲੁ ॥

bhuliaa chuk geaa tap taal |

The mortal has mistakenly renounced the way of service.

ਅੰਧਾ ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਪਇਆ ਝੇਰਿ ॥

andhaa jhakh jhakh peaa jher |

The blind fool is caught in conflict, bothered and bewildered.

ਪਿਛੈ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਲਿਆਵਹਿ ਫੇਰਿ ॥

pichhai roveh liaaveh fer |

Those who weep after someone has died - can they bring him back to life?

ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

bin boojhe kichh soojhai naahee |

Without realization, nothing can be understood.

ਮੋਇਆ ਰੋਂਹਿ ਰੋਂਦੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਂਹਂ‍ੀ ॥

moeaa ronhi ronde mar jaanhanee |

The weepers who weep for the dead shall themselves die as well.

ਨਾਨਕ ਖਸਮੈ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

naanak khasamai evai bhaavai |

O Nanak, this is the Will of our Lord and Master.

ਸੇਈ ਮੁਏ ਜਿਨ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੧॥

seee mue jin chit na aavai |1|

Those who do not remember the Lord, are dead. ||1||
