Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਆਪੇ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥

aape aap upaae niraalaa |

He Himself created the creation, remaining unattached.

ਸਾਚਾ ਥਾਨੁ ਕੀਓ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥

saachaa thaan keeo deaalaa |

The Merciful Lord has established His True Home.

ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਕਾ ਬੰਧਨੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਰਚਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥

paun paanee aganee kaa bandhan kaaeaa kott rachaaeidaa |1|

Binding together air, water and fire, He created the fortress of the body. ||1||

ਨਉ ਘਰ ਥਾਪੇ ਥਾਪਣਹਾਰੈ ॥

nau ghar thaape thaapanahaarai |

The Creator established the nine gates.

ਦਸਵੈ ਵਾਸਾ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੈ ॥

dasavai vaasaa alakh apaarai |

In the Tenth Gate, is the dwelling of the infinite, unseen Lord.

ਸਾਇਰ ਸਪਤ ਭਰੇ ਜਲਿ ਨਿਰਮਲਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥

saaeir sapat bhare jal niramal guramukh mail na laaeidaa |2|

The seven seas are overflowing with the Ambrosial Water; the Gurmukhs are not stained with filth. ||2||

ਰਵਿ ਸਸਿ ਦੀਪਕ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ॥

rav sas deepak jot sabaaee |

The lamps of the sun and the moon fill all with light.

ਆਪੇ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

aape kar vekhai vaddiaaee |

Creating them, He beholds His own glorious greatness.

ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸਚੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥

jot saroop sadaa sukhadaataa sache sobhaa paaeidaa |3|

The Giver of peace is forever the embodiment of Light; from the True Lord, glory is obtained. ||3||

ਗੜ ਮਹਿ ਹਾਟ ਪਟਣ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥

garr meh haatt pattan vaapaaraa |

Within the fortress are the stores and markets; the business is transacted there.

ਪੂਰੈ ਤੋਲਿ ਤੋਲੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥

poorai tol tolai vanajaaraa |

The Supreme Merchant weighs with the perfect weights.

ਆਪੇ ਰਤਨੁ ਵਿਸਾਹੇ ਲੇਵੈ ਆਪੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥

aape ratan visaahe levai aape keemat paaeidaa |4|

He Himself buys the jewel, and He Himself appraises its value. ||4||

ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਪਾਵਣਹਾਰੈ ॥

keemat paaee paavanahaarai |

The Appraiser appraises its value.

ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹ ਪੂਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰੈ ॥

veparavaah poore bhanddaarai |

The Independent Lord is overflowing with His treasures.

ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਲੇ ਆਪੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਬੁਝਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥

sarab kalaa le aape rahiaa guramukh kisai bujhaaeidaa |5|

He holds all powers, He is all-pervading; how few are those who, as Gurmukh, understand this. ||5||

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ॥

nadar kare pooraa gur bhettai |

When He bestows His Glance of Grace, one meets the Perfect Guru.

ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਮਾਰੈ ਫੇਟੈ ॥

jam jandaar na maarai fettai |

The tyrannical Messenger of Death cannot strike him then.

ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਬਿਗਾਸੀ ਆਪੇ ਬਿਗਸਿ ਧਿਆਇਦਾ ॥੬॥

jiau jal antar kamal bigaasee aape bigas dhiaaeidaa |6|

He blossoms forth like the lotus flower in the water; he blossoms forth in joyful meditation. ||6||

ਆਪੇ ਵਰਖੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰਾ ॥

aape varakhai amrit dhaaraa |

He Himself rains down the Ambrosial Stream of jewels,

ਰਤਨ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਲਾਲ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

ratan javehar laal apaaraa |

Diamonds, and rubies of priceless value.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥

satigur milai ta pooraa paaeeai prem padaarath paaeidaa |7|

When they meet the True Guru, then they find the Perfect Lord; they obtain the treasure of Love. ||7||

ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਲਹੈ ਅਮੋਲੋ ॥

prem padaarath lahai amolo |

Whoever receives the priceless treasure of Love

ਕਬ ਹੀ ਨ ਘਾਟਸਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਤੋਲੋ ॥

kab hee na ghaattas pooraa tolo |

- his weight never decreases; he has perfect weight.

ਸਚੇ ਕਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਚੋ ਸਉਦਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥

sache kaa vaapaaree hovai sacho saudaa paaeidaa |8|

The trader of Truth becomes true, and obtains the merchandise. ||8||

ਸਚਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਪਾਏ ॥

sachaa saudaa viralaa ko paae |

How rare are those who obtain the true merchandise.

ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

pooraa satigur milai milaae |

Meeting the Perfect True Guru, one meets with the Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਮਾਨੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥

guramukh hoe su hukam pachhaanai maanai hukam samaaeidaa |9|

One who becomes Gurmukh realizes the Hukam of His command; surrendering to His Command, one merges in the Lord. ||9||

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਇਆ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥

hukame aaeaa hukam samaaeaa |

By His Command we come, and by His command we merge into Him again.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਦੀਸੈ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥

hukame deesai jagat upaaeaa |

By His Command, the world was formed.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਸੁਰਗੁ ਮਛੁ ਪਇਆਲਾ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਕਲਾ ਰਹਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥

hukame surag machh peaalaa hukame kalaa rahaaeidaa |10|

By His Command, the heavens, this world and the nether regions were created; by His Command, His Power supports them. ||10||

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਧਉਲ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰੰ ॥

hukame dharatee dhaul sir bhaaran |

The Hukam of His Command is the mythical bull which supports the burden of the earth on its head.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਗੈਣਾਰੰ ॥

hukame paun paanee gainaaran |

By His Hukam, air, water and fire came into being.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਖੇਲ ਖੇਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥

hukame siv sakatee ghar vaasaa hukame khel khelaaeidaa |11|

By His Hukam, one dwells in the house of matter and energy - Shiva and Shakti. By His Hukam, He plays His plays. ||11||

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਡਾਣੇ ਆਗਾਸੀ ॥

hukame aaddaane aagaasee |

By the Hukam of His command, the sky is spread above.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਲ ਥਲ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਵਾਸੀ ॥

hukame jal thal tribhavan vaasee |

By His Hukam, His creatures dwell in the water, on the land and throughout the three worlds.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਸਾਸ ਗਿਰਾਸ ਸਦਾ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥

hukame saas giraas sadaa fun hukame dekh dikhaaeidaa |12|

By His Hukam, we draw our breath and receive our food; by His Hukam, He watches over us, and inspires us to see. ||12||

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਦਸ ਅਉਤਾਰਾ ॥

hukam upaae das aautaaraa |

By His Hukam, He created His ten incarnations,

ਦੇਵ ਦਾਨਵ ਅਗਣਤ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

dev daanav aganat apaaraa |

and the uncounted and infinite gods and devils.

ਮਾਨੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਝੈ ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥

maanai hukam su daragah paijhai saach milaae samaaeidaa |13|

Whoever obeys the Hukam of His Command, is robed with honor in the Court of the Lord; united with the Truth, He merges in the Lord. ||13||

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜੁਗ ਛਤੀਹ ਗੁਦਾਰੇ ॥

hukame jug chhateeh gudaare |

By the Hukam of His Command, the thirty-six ages passed.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

hukame sidh saadhik veechaare |

By His Hukam, the Siddhas and seekers contemplate Him.

ਆਪਿ ਨਾਥੁ ਨਥਂ‍ੀ ਸਭ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਬਖਸੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥

aap naath nathanee sabh jaa kee bakhase mukat karaaeidaa |14|

The Lord Himself has brought all under His control. Whoever He forgives, is liberated. ||14||

ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਗੜੈ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਜਾ ॥

kaaeaa kott garrai meh raajaa |

In the strong fortress of the body with its beautiful doors,

ਨੇਬ ਖਵਾਸ ਭਲਾ ਦਰਵਾਜਾ ॥

neb khavaas bhalaa daravaajaa |

Is the king, with his special assistants and ministers.

ਮਿਥਿਆ ਲੋਭੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਲਬਿ ਪਾਪਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥

mithiaa lobh naahee ghar vaasaa lab paap pachhutaaeidaa |15|

Those gripped by falsehood and greed do not dwell in the celestial home; engrossed in greed and sin, they come to regret and repent. ||15||

ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਨਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਕਾਰੀ ॥

sat santokh nagar meh kaaree |

Truth and contentment govern this body-village.

ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਰਣਿ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥

jat sat sanjam saran muraaree |

Chastity, truth and self-control are in the Sanctuary of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੪॥੧੬॥

naanak sehaj milai jagajeevan gurasabadee pat paaeidaa |16|4|16|

O Nanak, one intuitively meets the Lord, the Life of the World; the Word of the Guru's Shabad brings honor. ||16||4||16||
