ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਘਰੁ ੧੦ ॥

Bilaaval, Ashtpadheeyaa, First Mehl, Tenth House:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ik oankaar satigur prasaad |

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਨਿਕਟਿ ਵਸੈ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਭੁ ਸੋਈ ॥

nikatt vasai dekhai sabh soee |

He dwells close at hand, and sees all,

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥

guramukh viralaa boojhai koee |

but how rare is the Gurmukh who understands this.

ਵਿਣੁ ਭੈ ਪਇਐ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

vin bhai peiai bhagat na hoee |

Without the Fear of God, there is no devotional worship.

ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥

sabad rate sadaa sukh hoee |1|

Imbued with the Word of the Shabad, eternal peace is attained. ||1||

ਐਸਾ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥

aisaa giaan padaarath naam |

Such is the spiritual wisdom, the treasure of the Naam;

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

guramukh paavas ras ras maan |1| rahaau |

obtaining it, the Gurmukhs enjoy the subtle essence of this nectar. ||1||Pause||

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਕਥੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

giaan giaan kathai sabh koee |

Everyone talks about spiritual wisdom and spiritual knowledge.

ਕਥਿ ਕਥਿ ਬਾਦੁ ਕਰੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

kath kath baad kare dukh hoee |

Talking, talking, they argue, and suffer.

ਕਥਿ ਕਹਣੈ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

kath kahanai te rahai na koee |

No one can stop talking and discussing it.

ਬਿਨੁ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥

bin ras raate mukat na hoee |2|

Without being imbued with the subtle essence, there is no liberation. ||2||

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ॥

giaan dhiaan sabh gur te hoee |

Spiritual wisdom and meditation all come from the Guru.

ਸਾਚੀ ਰਹਤ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਈ ॥

saachee rehat saachaa man soee |

Through the lifestyle of Truth, the True Lord comes to dwell in the mind.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਥਨੀ ਹੈ ਪਰੁ ਰਹਤ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

manamukh kathanee hai par rehat na hoee |

The self-willed manmukh talks about it, but does not practice it.

ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੂਲੇ ਥਾਉ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੩॥

naavahu bhoole thaau na koee |3|

Forgetting the Name, he finds no place of rest. ||3||

ਮਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਬੰਧਿਓ ਸਰ ਜਾਲਿ ॥

man maaeaa bandhio sar jaal |

Maya has caught the mind in the trap of the whirlpool.

ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਬਿਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਬਿਖੁ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

ghatt ghatt biaap rahio bikh naal |

Each and every heart is trapped by this bait of poison and sin.

ਜੋ ਆਂਜੈ ਸੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਕਾਲਿ ॥

jo aanjai so deesai kaal |

See that whoever has come, is subject to death.

ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸੀਧੋ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮੑਾਲਿ ॥੪॥

kaaraj seedho ridai samaal |4|

Your affairs shall be adjusted, if you contemplate the Lord in your heart. ||4||

ਸੋ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥

so giaanee jin sabad liv laaee |

He alone is a spiritual teacher, who lovingly focuses his consciousness on the Word of the Shabad.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥

manamukh haumai pat gavaaee |

The self-willed, egotistical manmukh loses his honor.

ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਾਈ ॥

aape karatai bhagat karaaee |

The Creator Lord Himself inspires us to His devotional worship.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੫॥

guramukh aape de vaddiaaee |5|

He Himself blesses the Gurmukh with glorious greatness. ||5||

ਰੈਣਿ ਅੰਧਾਰੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੋਤਿ ॥

rain andhaaree niramal jot |

The life-night is dark, while the Divine Light is immaculate.

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਝੂਠੇ ਕੁਚਲ ਕਛੋਤਿ ॥

naam binaa jhootthe kuchal kachhot |

Those who lack the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are false, filthy and untouchable.

ਬੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਰੋਤਿ ॥

bed pukaarai bhagat sarot |

The Vedas preach sermons of devotional worship.

ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਾਨੈ ਵੇਖੈ ਜੋਤਿ ॥੬॥

sun sun maanai vekhai jot |6|

Listening, hearing and believing, one beholds the Divine Light. ||6||

ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਮੰ ॥

saasatr simrit naam drirraaman |

The Shaastras and Simritees implant the Naam within.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਕਰਾਮੰ ॥

guramukh saant aootam karaaman |

The Gurmukh lives in peace and tranquility, doing deeds of sublime purity.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਦੂਖ ਸਹਾਮੰ ॥

manamukh jonee dookh sahaaman |

The self-willed manmukh suffers the pains of reincarnation.

ਬੰਧਨ ਤੂਟੇ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਮੰ ॥੭॥

bandhan tootte ik naam vasaaman |7|

His bonds are broken, enshrining the Name of the One Lord. ||7||

ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚੀ ਪਤਿ ਪੂਜਾ ॥

mane naam sachee pat poojaa |

Believing in the Naam, one obtains true honor and adoration.

ਕਿਸੁ ਵੇਖਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਦੂਜਾ ॥

kis vekhaa naahee ko doojaa |

Who should I see? There is none other than the Lord.

ਦੇਖਿ ਕਹਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਇ ॥

dekh khau bhaavai man soe |

I see, and I say, that He alone is pleasing to my mind.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥੮॥੧॥

naanak kahai avar nahee koe |8|1|

Says Nanak, there is no other at all. ||8||1||
