ਏਕ ਦਿਵਸ ਪਰੀਛਤਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੀਯੋ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਮਹਾਨ ॥

One day the King Parikshat consulted his ministers
ਗਜਾਮੇਧ ਸੁ ਜਗ ਕੋ ਕਿਉ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਸਵਧਾਨ ॥
gajaamedh su jag ko kiau keejeeai savadhaan |
As to how the elephant sacrifice be performed methodically?
ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਸੁ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਨ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਕੀਓ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥
bol bol su mitr mantran mantr keeo bichaar |
The friends and the ministers who spoke gave the idea
ਸੇਤ ਦੰਤ ਮੰਗਾਇ ਕੈ ਬਹੁ ਜੁਗਤ ਸੌ ਅਬਿਚਾਰ ॥੧॥੧੫੭॥
set dant mangaae kai bahu jugat sau abichaar |1|157|
That abandoning all other thoughts, the elephant of white teeth be sent for.1.157.
ਜਗ ਮੰਡਲ ਕੋ ਰਚਿਯੋ ਤਹਿ ਕੋਟ ਅਸਟ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ ॥
jag manddal ko rachiyo teh kott asatt pramaan |
The sacrificial altar was constructed within eight kos
ਅਸਟ ਸਹੰਸ੍ਰ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਰਿਤੁਜੁ ਅਸਟ ਲਛ ਦਿਜਾਨ ॥
asatt sahansr bulaae rituj asatt lachh dijaan |
Eight thousand ritual-performing and eight lakh other Brahmins
ਭਾਤ ਭਾਤ ਬਨਾਇ ਕੈ ਤਹਾ ਅਸਟ ਸਹੰਸ੍ਰ ਪ੍ਰਨਾਰ ॥
bhaat bhaat banaae kai tahaa asatt sahansr pranaar |
Eight thousand drain of various types were prepared.
ਹਸਤ ਸੁੰਡ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ ਤਾ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਮੀਐ ਘ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰ ॥੨॥੧੫੮॥
hasat sundd pramaan taa meh homeeai ghrit dhaar |2|158|
Through which the continuous current of the clarified butter of the size of the elephant-trunk flowed.2.158.
ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਕੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤ ਭਾਤ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ॥

Various types of kings from various countries were called.
ਭਾਤ ਭਾਤਨ ਕੇ ਦੀਏ ਬਹੁ ਦਾਨ ਮਾਨ ਰਸਾਲ ॥
bhaat bhaatan ke dee bahu daan maan rasaal |
They were given many gifts of various types with honour,
ਹੀਰ ਚੀਰ ਪਟੰਬਰਾਦਿਕ ਬਾਜ ਅਉ ਗਜਰਾਜ ॥
heer cheer pattanbaraadik baaj aau gajaraaj |
Including diamonds, silken clothers etc., horses and big elephants.
ਸਾਜ ਸਾਜ ਸਬੈ ਦੀਏ ਬਹੁ ਰਾਜ ਕੌ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਰਾਜ ॥੩॥੧੫੯॥
saaj saaj sabai dee bahu raaj kau nriparaaj |3|159|
The great Sovereign gave all the things highly decorated to the kings.3.159.
ਐਸਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੀਓ ਤਹਾ ਬਹੁ ਬਰਖ ਲਉ ਤਿਹ ਰਾਜ ॥
ais bhaat keeo tahaa bahu barakh lau tih raaj |
In this way he ruled there for many years.
ਕਰਨ ਦੇਵ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ ਲਉ ਅਰ ਜੀਤ ਕੈ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਜ ॥
karan dev pramaan lau ar jeet kai bahu saaj |
Many eminent enemies like the king Karan were conquered alongwith many of their precious belongings.
ਏਕ ਦਿਵਸ ਚੜਿਓ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਬਰ ਸੈਲ ਕਾਜ ਅਖੇਟ ॥
ek divas charrio nrip bar sail kaaj akhett |
On one day the king went on a merry-making trip and hunting.
ਦੇਖ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਭਇਓ ਤਹਾ ਮੁਨਰਾਜ ਸਿਉ ਭਈ ਭੇਟ ॥੪॥੧੬੦॥
dekh mrig bheo tahaa munaraaj siau bhee bhett |4|160|
He saw and pursued a deer and met a great sage.4.160.
ਪੈਡ ਯਾਹਿ ਗਯੋ ਨਹੀ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਰੇ ਰਖੀਸਰ ਬੋਲ ॥
paidd yaeh gayo nahee mrig re rakheesar bol |
(He said to the sage) “O great sage! Please speak, did the deer go this way ?”
ਉਤ੍ਰ ਭੂਪਹਿ ਨ ਦੀਓ ਮੁਨਿ ਆਖਿ ਭੀ ਇਕ ਖੋਲ ॥
autr bhoopeh na deeo mun aakh bhee ik khol |
The sage did not open his eye nor gave any answer to the king,
ਮ੍ਰਿਤਕ ਸਰਪ ਨਿਹਾਰ ਕੈ ਜਿਹ ਅਗ੍ਰ ਤਾਹ ਉਠਾਇ ॥
mritak sarap nihaar kai jih agr taah utthaae |
Seeing a dead snake, (the king) raised it with the tip of his bow
ਤਉਨ ਕੇ ਗਰ ਡਾਰ ਕੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਜਾਤ ਭਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਰਾਇ ॥੫॥੧੬੧॥
taun ke gar ddaar kai nrip jaat bhayo nriparaae |5|161|
Put it around the neck of the sage then the Great Sovereign went away.5.161.
ਆਖ ਉਘਾਰ ਲਖੈ ਕਹਾ ਮੁਨ ਸਰਪ ਦੇਖ ਡਰਾਨ ॥
aakh ughaar lakhai kahaa mun sarap dekh ddaraan |
What did the sage see on opening his eyes? He was frightened to see the snake (around his neck).
ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕਰਤ ਭਯੋ ਤਹਾ ਦਿਜ ਰਕਤ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਚੁਚਾਨ ॥
krodh karat bhayo tahaa dij rakat netr chuchaan |
There he became very angry and the blood oozed out form the eyes of the Brahmin.
ਜਉਨ ਮੋ ਗਰਿ ਡਾਰਿ ਗਿਓ ਤਿਹ ਕਾਟਿ ਹੈ ਅਹਿਰਾਇ ॥
jaun mo gar ddaar gio tih kaatt hai ahiraae |
(He said:) “He, who hath put this snake around my neck, he will be bitten by the king of snakes
ਸਪਤ ਦਿਵਸਨ ਮੈ ਮਰੈ ਯਹਿ ਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰਾਪ ਸਦਾਇ ॥੬॥੧੬੨॥
sapat divasan mai marai yeh sat sraap sadaae |6|162|
“He will die within seven days. This curse of mine will ever be rure.”6.162.
ਸ੍ਰਾਪ ਕੋ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਡਰਿਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਮੰਦ੍ਰ ਏਕ ਉਸਾਰ ॥

Coming to know about the curse, the king was frightened. He got and Abode constructed.
ਮਧਿ ਗੰਗ ਰਚਿਯੋ ਧਉਲਹਰਿ ਛੁਇ ਸਕੈ ਨ ਬਿਆਰ ॥
madh gang rachiyo dhaulahar chhue sakai na biaar |
That palace was constructed within the Ganges, which could not even be touched by air
ਸਰਪ ਕੀ ਤਹ ਗੰਮਤਾ ਕੋ ਕਾਟਿ ਹੈ ਤਿਹ ਜਾਇ ॥
sarap kee teh gamataa ko kaatt hai tih jaae |
How could the snake reach there and bite the king?
ਕਾਲ ਪਾਇ ਕਟ︀ਯੋ ਤਬੈ ਤਹਿ ਆਨ ਕੈ ਅਹਿਰਾਇ ॥੭॥੧੬੩॥
kaal paae kattayo tabai teh aan kai ahiraae |7|163|
But within the due time, the king snakes came there and bit (the king).7.163.
ਸਾਠ ਬਰਖ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ ਲਉ ਦੁਇ ਮਾਸ ਯੌ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰ ॥
saatth barakh pramaan lau due maas yau din chaar |
(The king Parikshat) ruled for sixty years, two months and four days.
ਜੋਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਬਿਖੈ ਰਲੀ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਰਾਜ ਕੀ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥
jot jot bikhai ralee nrip raaj kee karataar |
Then the light of the soul of the king Parikshat merged in the light of the Creator.
ਭੂਮ ਭਰਥ ਭਏ ਤਬੈ ਜਨਮੇਜ ਰਾਜ ਮਹਾਨ ॥
bhoom bharath bhe tabai janamej raaj mahaan |
Then the great king Janmeja become the Sustainer of the earth.
ਸੂਰਬੀਰ ਹਠੀ ਤਪੀ ਦਸ ਚਾਰ ਚਾਰ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥੮॥੧੬੪॥
soorabeer hatthee tapee das chaar chaar nidhaan |8|164|
He was a great hero, headstrong, ascetic and adept in eighteen learinings.8.164.
ਇਤਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਛਤ ਸਮਾਪਤੰ ਭਏ ਰਾਜਾ ਜਨਮੇਜਾ ਰਾਜ ਪਾਵਤ ਭਏ ॥

The end of the Episode of King Parikshat.The Rule of King Janmeja begins :
