ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

aasaa mahalaa 5 |

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:

ਭੂਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਰਾਜੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥

bhoopat hoe kai raaj kamaaeaa |

Becoming a king, the mortal wields his royal authority;

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਅਨਰਥ ਵਿਹਾਝੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

kar kar anarath vihaajhee maaeaa |

oppressing the people, he gathers wealth.

ਸੰਚਤ ਸੰਚਤ ਥੈਲੀ ਕੀਨੑੀ ॥

sanchat sanchat thailee keenaee |

Gathering it and collecting it, he fills his bags.

ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਉਸ ਤੇ ਡਾਰਿ ਅਵਰ ਕਉ ਦੀਨੑੀ ॥੧॥

prabh us te ddaar avar kau deenaee |1|

But God takes it away from him, and gives it to another. ||1||

ਕਾਚ ਗਗਰੀਆ ਅੰਭ ਮਝਰੀਆ ॥

kaach gagareea anbh majhareea |

The mortal is like an unbaked clay pot in water;

ਗਰਬਿ ਗਰਬਿ ਉਆਹੂ ਮਹਿ ਪਰੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

garab garab uaahoo meh pareea |1| rahaau |

indulging in pride and egotism, he crumbles down and dissolves. ||1||Pause||

ਨਿਰਭਉ ਹੋਇਓ ਭਇਆ ਨਿਹੰਗਾ ॥

nirbhau hoeo bheaa nihangaa |

Being fearless, he becomes unrestrained.

ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੰਗਾ ॥

cheet na aaeo karataa sangaa |

He does not think of the Creator, who is ever with him.

ਲਸਕਰ ਜੋੜੇ ਕੀਆ ਸੰਬਾਹਾ ॥

lasakar jorre keea sanbaahaa |

He raises armies, and collects arms.

ਨਿਕਸਿਆ ਫੂਕ ਤ ਹੋਇ ਗਇਓ ਸੁਆਹਾ ॥੨॥

nikasiaa fook ta hoe geo suaahaa |2|

But when the breath leaves him, he turns to ashes. ||2||

ਊਚੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਮਹਲ ਅਰੁ ਰਾਨੀ ॥

aooche mandar mehal ar raanee |

He has lofty palaces, mansions and queens,

ਹਸਤਿ ਘੋੜੇ ਜੋੜੇ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਨੀ ॥

hasat ghorre jorre man bhaanee |

elephants and pairs of horses, delighting the mind;

ਵਡ ਪਰਵਾਰੁ ਪੂਤ ਅਰੁ ਧੀਆ ॥

vadd paravaar poot ar dheea |

he is blessed with a great family of sons and daughters.

ਮੋਹਿ ਪਚੇ ਪਚਿ ਅੰਧਾ ਮੂਆ ॥੩॥

mohi pache pach andhaa mooaa |3|

But, engrossed in attachment, the blind fool wastes away to death. ||3||

ਜਿਨਹਿ ਉਪਾਹਾ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਬਿਨਾਹਾ ॥

jineh upaahaa tineh binaahaa |

The One who created him destroys him.

ਰੰਗ ਰਸਾ ਜੈਸੇ ਸੁਪਨਾਹਾ ॥

rang rasaa jaise supanaahaa |

Enjoyments and pleasures are like just a dream.

ਸੋਈ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਰਾਜੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥

soee mukataa tis raaj maal |

He alone is liberated, and possesses regal power and wealth,

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਜਿਸੁ ਖਸਮੁ ਦਇਆਲੁ ॥੪॥੩੫॥੮੬॥

naanak daas jis khasam deaal |4|35|86|

O Nanak, whom the Lord Master blesses with His Mercy. ||4||35||86||
