ਭੁਜੰਗ ਪ੍ਰਯਾਤ ਛੰਦ ॥

BHUJANG PRAYAAT STANZA

ਤਹਾ ਭੀਮ ਕੁਰਰਾਜ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਧ ਮਚਿਓ ॥

tahaa bheem kuraraaj siau judh machio |

There the fierce war of Duryodhana began with Bhim,

ਛੁਟੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਤਾਰੀ ਮਹਾ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਨਚਿਓ ॥

chhuttee braham taaree mahaa rudr nachio |

Because of which the meditation of Shiva was shattered and that great gods began to dance.

ਉਠੈ ਸਬਦ ਨਿਰਘਾਤ ਆਘਾਤ ਬੀਰੰ ॥

autthai sabad niraghaat aaghaat beeran |

Because of the blows of warriors terrible sound arose

ਭਏ ਰੁੰਡ ਮੁੰਡੰ ਤਣੰ ਤਛ ਤੀਰੰ ॥੧॥੨੧੯॥

bhe rundd munddan tanan tachh teeran |1|219|

The bodies were pierced by arrows and the heads were separated from pierced by arrows and the heads were separated from the trunks.1.219.

ਗਿਰੇ ਬੀਰ ਏਕੰ ਅਨੇਕੰ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰੰ ॥

gire beer ekan anekan prakaaran |

Fighting in various ways, many warriors fell in the field

ਗਿਰੇ ਅਧ ਅਧੰ ਛੁਧੰ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਧਾਰੰ ॥

gire adh adhan chhudhan sasatr dhaaran |

Many had fallen in halves who had been hungry of the sharp edges of weapons.

ਕਟੇ ਕਉਰਵੰ ਦੁਰ ਸਿੰਦੂਰ ਖੇਤੰ ॥

katte kauravan dur sindoor khetan |

The intoxicated elephants of Kauravas had been chopped in the field.

ਨਚੇ ਗਿਧ ਆਵਧ ਸਾਵੰਤ ਖੇਤੰ ॥੨॥੨੨੦॥

nache gidh aavadh saavant khetan |2|220|

Seeing the brave warriors wields weapons in the field, the vultures were feeling pleased.2.220.

ਬਲੀ ਮੰਡਲਾਕਾਰ ਜੂਝੈ ਬਿਰਾਜੈ ॥

balee manddalaakaar joojhai biraajai |

The warriors were fighting in the battlefield in enclosures.

ਹਸੈ ਗਰਜ ਠੋਕੈ ਭੁਜਾ ਹਰ ਦੁ ਗਾਜੈ ॥

hasai garaj tthokai bhujaa har du gaajai |

They laughed, roared and patted their arms, they challenged from both sides.

ਦਿਖਾਵੇ ਬਲੀ ਮੰਡਲਾਕਾਰ ਥਾਨੈ ॥

dikhaave balee manddalaakaar thaanai |

They were standing and showing feats of bravery in enclosures.

ਉਭਾਰੈ ਭੁਜਾ ਅਉ ਫਟਾਕੈ ਗਜਾਨੈ ॥੩॥੨੨੧॥

aubhaarai bhujaa aau fattaakai gajaanai |3|221|

They swayed their arms and were producing terrible sounds with the blows of their maces.3.221.

ਸੁਭੇ ਸਵਰਨ ਕੇ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਬਾਧੇ ਗਜਾ ਮੈ ॥

subhe savaran ke patr baadhe gajaa mai |

The sheets of gold covering the maces looked splendid.

ਭਈ ਅਗਨਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਲਖੀ ਕੈ ਧੁਜਾ ਮੈ ॥

bhee agan sobhaa lakhee kai dhujaa mai |

Their glory exhibited the blaze of fire at their tops.

ਭਿੜਾ ਮੈ ਭ੍ਰਮੈ ਮੰਡਲਾਕਾਰ ਬਾਹੈ ॥

bhirraa mai bhramai manddalaakaar baahai |

The warriors moved in the field and rotated their discs.

ਅਪੋ ਆਪ ਸੈ ਨੇਕਿ ਘਾਇੰ ਸਰਾਹੈ ॥੪॥੨੨੨॥

apo aap sai nek ghaaein saraahai |4|222|

They appreciated those on their sides who inflicted deep wounds.4.222.

ਤਹਾ ਭੀਮ ਭਾਰੀ ਭੁਜਾ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਾਹੈ ॥

tahaa bheem bhaaree bhujaa sasatr baahai |

There the great warrior Bhim used his weapons with his arms.

ਭਲੀ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੈ ਕੈ ਭਲੇ ਸੈਨ ਗਾਹੈ ॥

bhalee bhaat kai kai bhale sain gaahai |

He was trampling the armies nicely.

ਉਤੈ ਕਉਰਪਾਲੰ ਧਰੈ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਧਰਮੰ ॥

autai kaurapaalan dharai chhatr dharaman |

On the other side Yudhishtar was bound by Kshatriya discipline,

ਕਰੈ ਚਿਤ ਪਾਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਾਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਮੰ ॥੫॥੨੨੩॥

karai chit paavitr baachitr karaman |5|223|

And was performing wonderful and holy Karmas.5.223.

ਸਭੈ ਬਾਜੁਵੰਦੰ ਛਕੈ ਭੂਪਨਾਣੰ ॥

sabhai baajuvandan chhakai bhoopanaanan |

All of them looked elegant with ornaments like armlets.

ਲਸੈ ਮੁਤਕਾ ਚਾਰ ਦੁਮਲਿਅੰ ਹਾਣੰ ॥

lasai mutakaa chaar dumalian haanan |

Their necklaces of gems glistened and their turbans looked graceful on the heads of both the warriors of the same age.

ਦੋਊ ਮੀਰ ਧੀਰੰ ਦੋਊ ਪਰਮ ਓਜੰ ॥

doaoo meer dheeran doaoo param ojan |

Both the Chiefs were men of great strength and composure.

ਦੋਊ ਮਾਨਧਾਤਾ ਮਹੀਪੰ ਕਿ ਭੋਜੰ ॥੬॥੨੨੪॥

doaoo maanadhaataa maheepan ki bhojan |6|224|

Both were either king Mandhata or king Bhoj.6.224.

ਦੋਊ ਬੀਰ ਬਾਨਾ ਬਧੈ ਅਧ ਅਧੰ ॥

doaoo beer baanaa badhai adh adhan |

Both the warriors had tightened their tearing shafts.

ਦੋਊ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਧਾਰੀ ਮਹਾ ਜੁਧ ਕ੍ਰੁਧੰ ॥

doaoo sasatr dhaaree mahaa judh krudhan |

Both the weapon-wielding warriors began to wage war in great fury.

ਦੋਊ ਕ੍ਰੂਰ ਕਰਮੰ ਦੋਊ ਜਾਨ ਬਾਹੰ ॥

doaoo kraoor karaman doaoo jaan baahan |

Both the heroes of violent actions had long arms like gods.

ਦੋਊ ਹਦਿ ਹਿੰਦੂਨ ਸਾਹਾਨ ਸਾਹੰ ॥੭॥੨੨੫॥

doaoo had hindoon saahaan saahan |7|225|

Both were great kings with extraordinary knowledge of Hindusim.7.225.

ਦੋਊ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਧਾਰੰ ਦੋਊ ਪਰਮ ਦਾਨੰ ॥

doaoo sasatr dhaaran doaoo param daanan |

Both were weapon-wielders and supreme donors.

ਦੋਊ ਢਾਲ ਢੀਚਾਲ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਹਿੰਦਾਨੰ ॥

doaoo dtaal dteechaal hindoo hindaanan |

Both were Indians and capable of protecting themselves with their shields.

ਦੋਊ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਵਰਤੀ ਦੋਊ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਧਾਰੀ ॥

doaoo sasatr varatee doaoo chhatr dhaaree |

Both were the users of their arms and were kings with canopies.

ਦੋਊ ਪਰਮ ਜੋਧਾ ਮਹਾ ਜੁਧਕਾਰੀ ॥੮॥੨੨੬॥

doaoo param jodhaa mahaa judhakaaree |8|226|

Both were Supreme warriors and great fighters.8.226.

ਦੋਊ ਖੰਡ ਖੰਡੀ ਦੋਊ ਮੰਡ ਮੰਡੰ ॥

doaoo khandd khanddee doaoo mandd manddan |

Both were the destroyers of their enemies and also their establishers.

ਦੋਊ ਜੋਧ ਜੈਤਵਾਰੁ ਜੋਧਾ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡੰ ॥

doaoo jodh jaitavaar jodhaa prachanddan |

Both were the terrible conquerors of the great heroes.

ਦੋਊ ਬੀਰ ਬਾਨੀ ਦੋਊ ਬਾਹ ਸਾਹੰ ॥

doaoo beer baanee doaoo baah saahan |

Both the warriors were adept in shooting arrows and had mighty arms.

ਦੋਊ ਸੂਰ ਸੈਨੰ ਦੋਊ ਸੂਰ ਮਾਹੰ ॥੯॥੨੨੭॥

doaoo soor sainan doaoo soor maahan |9|227|

Both the heroes were the sun and moon of their forces.9.227.

ਦੋਊ ਚਕ੍ਰਵਰਤੀ ਦੋਊ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਤਾ ॥

doaoo chakravaratee doaoo sasatr betaa |

Both were the warriors universal monarchs and had knowledge of warfare.

ਦੋਊ ਜੰਗ ਜੋਧੀ ਦੋਊ ਜੰਗ ਜੇਤਾ ॥

doaoo jang jodhee doaoo jang jetaa |

Both were the warriors of war and conquerors of war.

ਦੋਊ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਜੋਤੀ ਦੋਊ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਚਾਪੰ ॥

doaoo chitr jotee doaoo chitr chaapan |

Both were marvelously beautiful carrying beautiful bows.

ਦੋਊ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਵਰਮਾ ਦੋਊ ਦੁਸਟ ਤਾਪੰ ॥੧੦॥੨੨੮॥

doaoo chitr varamaa doaoo dusatt taapan |10|228|

Both were clad in armour and were the destroyers of enemies.10.228.

ਦੋਊ ਖੰਡ ਖੰਡੀ ਦੋਊ ਮੰਡ ਮੰਡੰ ॥

doaoo khandd khanddee doaoo mandd manddan |

Both were the destroyers of the enemies with their double-edged swords and were also their establishers.

ਦੋਊ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਜੋਤੀ ਸੁ ਜੋਧਾ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡੰ ॥

doaoo chitr jotee su jodhaa prachanddan |

Both were Glory-incarnate and mighty heroes.

ਦੋਊ ਮਤ ਬਾਰੁੰਨ ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਸਮਾਨੰ ॥

doaoo mat baarun bikram samaanan |

Both were intoxicate elephants and like king Vikrama.

ਦੋਊ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਤਾ ਦੋਊ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਪਾਨੰ ॥੧੧॥੨੨੯॥

doaoo sasatr betaa doaoo sasatr paanan |11|229|

Both were adepts in warfare and had weapons in their hands.11.229.

ਦੋਊ ਪਰਮ ਜੋਧੇ ਦੋਊ ਕ੍ਰੁਧਵਾਨੰ ॥

doaoo param jodhe doaoo krudhavaanan |

Both were Supreme warriors full of rage.

ਦੋਊ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਤਾ ਦੋਊ ਰੂਪ ਖਾਨੰ ॥

doaoo sasatr betaa doaoo roop khaanan |

Both were adepts in warfare and were the source of beauty.

ਦੋਊ ਛਤ੍ਰਪਾਲੰ ਦੋਊ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਧਰਮੰ ॥

doaoo chhatrapaalan doaoo chhatr dharaman |

Both were Sustainers of Kshatriyas and followed the discipline of Kshatriyas.

ਦੋਊ ਜੁਧ ਜੋਧਾ ਦੋਊ ਕ੍ਰੂਰ ਕਰਮੰ ॥੧੨॥੨੩੦॥

doaoo judh jodhaa doaoo kraoor karaman |12|230|

Both were the heroes of war and men of violent actions.12.230.

ਦੋਊ ਮੰਡਲਾਕਾਰ ਜੂਝੇ ਬਿਰਾਜੈ ॥

doaoo manddalaakaar joojhe biraajai |

Both were standing and fighting in enclosures.

ਹਥੈ ਹਰ ਦੁ ਠੋਕੈ ਭੁਜਾ ਪਾਇ ਗਾਜੈ ॥

hathai har du tthokai bhujaa paae gaajai |

Both struck their arms with their hands and shouted loudly.

ਦੋਊ ਖਤ੍ਰਹਾਣੰ ਦੋਊ ਖਤ੍ਰ ਖੰਡੰ ॥

doaoo khatrahaanan doaoo khatr khanddan |

Both had Kshatriya discipline but both were the destroyers of Kshatriyas.

ਦੋਊ ਖਗ ਪਾਣੰ ਦੋਊ ਛੇਤ੍ਰ ਮੰਡੰ ॥੧੩॥੨੩੧॥

doaoo khag paanan doaoo chhetr manddan |13|231|

Both had swords in their hands and both were the adornments of th battlefield.13.231.

ਦੋਊ ਚਿਤ੍ਰਜੋਤੀ ਦੋਊ ਚਾਰ ਬਿਚਾਰੰ ॥

doaoo chitrajotee doaoo chaar bichaaran |

Both were Beauty-incarnate and had lofty thoughts.

ਦੋਊ ਮੰਡਲਾਕਾਰ ਖੰਡਾ ਅਬਾਰੰ ॥

doaoo manddalaakaar khanddaa abaaran |

Both were operating their double-adged swords in their enclosures.

ਦੋਊ ਖਗ ਖੂਨੀ ਦੋਊ ਖਤ੍ਰਹਾਣੰ ॥

doaoo khag khoonee doaoo khatrahaanan |

Both had their swords smeared with blood and both worked against Kshatriya discipline.

ਦੋਊ ਖਤ੍ਰਖੇਤਾ ਦੋਊ ਛਤ੍ਰਪਾਣੰ ॥੧੪॥੨੩੨॥

doaoo khatrakhetaa doaoo chhatrapaanan |14|232|

Both were capable of risking their life in the battlefield.14.232.

ਦੋਊ ਬੀਰ ਬਿਬ ਆਸਤ ਧਾਰੇ ਨਿਹਾਰੇ ॥

doaoo beer bib aasat dhaare nihaare |

Both the heroes had their weapons in their hands.

ਰਹੇ ਬ︀ਯੋਮ ਮੈ ਭੂਪ ਗਉਨੈ ਹਕਾਰੇ ॥

rahe bayom mai bhoop gaunai hakaare |

It seemed as if the spirits of the dead kings moving the sky were calling them.

ਹਕਾ ਹਕ ਲਾਗੀ ਧਨੰ ਧੰਨ ਜੰਪ੍ਰਯੋ ॥

hakaa hak laagee dhanan dhan janprayo |

They were shouting seeing their heroism, they were praising them with the words “Well done, bravo!”

ਚਕ੍ਰਯੋ ਜਛ ਰਾਜੰ ਪ੍ਰਿਥੀ ਲੋਕ ਕੰਪ︀ਯੋ ॥੧੫॥੨੩੩॥

chakrayo jachh raajan prithee lok kanpayo |15|233|

The king of Yakshas seeing their bravery was astonished and the earth was trembling.15.233.

ਹਨਿਓ ਰਾਜ ਦੁਰਜੋਧਨੰ ਜੁਧ ਭੂਮੰ ॥

hanio raaj durajodhanan judh bhooman |

(Ultimately) the king Duryodhana was killed in the battlefield.

ਭਜੇ ਸਭੈ ਜੋਧਾ ਚਲੀ ਧਾਮ ਧੂਮੰ ॥

bhaje sabhai jodhaa chalee dhaam dhooman |

All the noisy warriors ran helter-skelter.

ਕਰਿਯੋ ਰਾਜ ਨਿਹਕੰਟਕੰ ਕਉਰਪਾਲੰ ॥

kariyo raaj nihakanttakan kaurapaalan |

(After that) Pandavas ruled over the family of Kauravas unconcerned.

ਪੁਨਰ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਮਝਿ ਸਿਝੈ ਹਿਵਾਲੰ ॥੧੬॥੨੩੪॥

punar jaae kai majh sijhai hivaalan |16|234|

Then they went to Himalaya mountains.16.234.

ਤਹਾ ਏਕ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਧ ਮਚ︀ਯੋ ॥

tahaa ek gandhrab siau judh machayo |

At that time a war was waged with a Gandharva.

ਤਹਾ ਭੂਰਪਾਲੰ ਧੂਰਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਰਚ︀ਯੋ ॥

tahaa bhoorapaalan dhooraa rang rachayo |

There that Gandharva adopted a wonderful garb.

ਤਹਾ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਕੇ ਭੀਮ ਹਸਤੀ ਚਲਾਏ ॥

tahaa satru ke bheem hasatee chalaae |

Bhima threw there the elephants of the enemy upwards.

ਫਿਰੇ ਮਧਿ ਗੈਣੰ ਅਜਉ ਲਉ ਨ ਆਏ ॥੧੭॥੨੩੫॥

fire madh gainan ajau lau na aae |17|235|

Which are still moving in the sky and have not returned as yet.17.235.

ਸੁਨੈ ਬੈਨ ਕਉ ਭੂਪ ਇਉ ਐਠ ਨਾਕੰ ॥

sunai bain kau bhoop iau aitth naakan |

Hearing these words, the king Janmeja turned his nose in such a manner,

ਕਰਿਯੋ ਹਾਸ ਮੰਦੈ ਬੁਲ︀ਯੋ ਏਮ ਬਾਕੰ ॥

kariyo haas mandai bulayo em baakan |

And laughed contemptuously as though the utterance about the elephants was not true.

ਰਹਿਯੋ ਨਾਕ ਮੈ ਕੁਸਟ ਛਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਵਾਨੰ ॥

rahiyo naak mai kusatt chhatree savaanan |

With this disbelief the thirty-sixth part of leprosy remained in his nose,

ਭਈ ਤਉਨ ਹੀ ਰੋਗ ਤੇ ਭੂਪ ਹਾਨੰ ॥੧੮॥੨੩੬॥

bhee taun hee rog te bhoop haanan |18|236|

And with this ailment, the king passed away.18.236.
