ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ik oankaar satigur prasaad |

One Oankar, the primal energy, realized through the grace of divine preceptor

ਪਉੜੀ ੧

ਕੁਤਾ ਰਾਜਿ ਬਹਾਲੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਚਕੀ ਚਟੈ ।

kutaa raaj bahaaleeai fir chakee chattai |

If a dog is seated on the throne even then it will (like to) lick the flour mill.

ਸਪੈ ਦੁਧੁ ਪੀਆਲੀਐ ਵਿਹੁ ਮੁਖਹੁ ਸਟੈ ।

sapai dudh peeaaleeai vihu mukhahu sattai |

If a snake is fed on milk even then it will pour out poison from its mouth.

ਪਥਰੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਰਖੀਐ ਮਨਿ ਹਠੁ ਨ ਘਟੈ ।

pathar paanee rakheeai man hatth na ghattai |

If a stone is kept in water even then its hardness does not soften.

ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਪਰਿਹਰੈ ਖਰੁ ਖੇਹ ਪਲਟੈ ।

choaa chandan pariharai khar kheh palattai |

Repudiating the perfume and sandalwood-fragrance, the donkey rolls its body in the dust.

ਤਿਉ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਹੂ ਹਥਿ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਹਟੈ ।

tiau nindak par nindahoo hath mool na hattai |

Similarly the backbiter never gives up (his habit of) backbiting

ਆਪਣ ਹਥੀਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੜ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਟੈ ।੧।

aapan hatheen aapanee jarr aap upattai |1|

And uproots himselt to destroy his very existence.
