ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

aasaa mahalaa 1 |

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਏਕੋ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਕਮਲ ਅਨੂਪ ॥

eko saravar kamal anoop |

In the pool is the one incomparably beautiful lotus.

ਸਦਾ ਬਿਗਾਸੈ ਪਰਮਲ ਰੂਪ ॥

sadaa bigaasai paramal roop |

It blossoms continually; its form is pure and fragrant.

ਊਜਲ ਮੋਤੀ ਚੂਗਹਿ ਹੰਸ ॥

aoojal motee choogeh hans |

The swans pick up the bright jewels.

ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਜਗਦੀਸੈ ਅੰਸ ॥੧॥

sarab kalaa jagadeesai ans |1|

They take on the essence of the All-powerful Lord of the Universe. ||1||

ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ॥

jo deesai so upajai binasai |

Whoever is seen, is subject to birth and death.

ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਸਰਵਰਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

bin jal saravar kamal na deesai |1| rahaau |

In the pool without water, the lotus is not seen. ||1||Pause||

ਬਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਪਾਵੈ ਭੇਦੁ ॥

biralaa boojhai paavai bhed |

How rare are those who know and understand this secret.

ਸਾਖਾ ਤੀਨਿ ਕਹੈ ਨਿਤ ਬੇਦੁ ॥

saakhaa teen kahai nit bed |

The Vedas continually speak of the three branches.

ਨਾਦ ਬਿੰਦ ਕੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

naad bind kee surat samaae |

One who merges into the knowledge of the Lord as absolute and related,

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥

satigur sev param pad paae |2|

serves the True Guru and obtains the supreme status. ||2||

ਮੁਕਤੋ ਰਾਤਉ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਵਾਂਤਉ ॥

mukato raatau rang ravaantau |

One who is imbued with the Love of the Lord and dwells continually upon Him is liberated.

ਰਾਜਨ ਰਾਜਿ ਸਦਾ ਬਿਗਸਾਂਤਉ ॥

raajan raaj sadaa bigasaantau |

He is the king of kings, and blossoms forth continually.

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

jis toon raakheh kirapaa dhaar |

That one whom You preserve, by bestowing Your Mercy, O Lord,

ਬੂਡਤ ਪਾਹਨ ਤਾਰਹਿ ਤਾਰਿ ॥੩॥

booddat paahan taareh taar |3|

even the sinking stone - You float that one across. ||3||

ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥

tribhavan meh jot tribhavan meh jaaniaa |

Your Light is pervading the three worlds; I know that You are permeating the three worlds.

ਉਲਟ ਭਈ ਘਰੁ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਆਣਿਆ ॥

aulatt bhee ghar ghar meh aaniaa |

When my mind turned away from Maya, I came to dwell in my own home.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

ahinis bhagat kare liv laae |

Nanak falls at the feet of that person who immerses himself in the Lord's Love,

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਲਾਗੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥੧੨॥

naanak tin kai laagai paae |4|12|

And performs devotional worship night and day. ||4||12||
