Salok, Third Mehl:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ik oankaar satigur prasaad |

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਅਭਿਆਗਤ ਏਹ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਭਰਮੁ ॥

abhiaagat eeh na aakheeeh jin kai man meh bharam |

Do not call the wandering beggars holy men, if their minds are filled with doubt.

ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਦਿਤੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਤੇਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਧਰਮੁ ॥੧॥

tin ke dite naanakaa teho jehaa dharam |1|

Whoever gives to them, O Nanak, earns the same sort of merit. ||1||

ਅਭੈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਭੀਖਕੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

abhai niranjan param pad taa kaa bheekhak hoe |

One who begs for the supreme status of the Fearless and Immaculate Lord

ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਪਾਏ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥

tis kaa bhojan naanakaa viralaa paae koe |2|

- how rare are those who have the opportunity, O Nanak, to give food to such a person. ||2||

ਹੋਵਾ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਜੋਤਕੀ ਵੇਦ ਪੜਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਚਾਰਿ ॥

hovaa panddit jotakee ved parraa mukh chaar |

If I were a religious scholar, an astrologer, or one who could recite the four Vedas,

ਨਵਾ ਖੰਡਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਾਣੀਆ ਅਪਨੇ ਚਜ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥੩॥

navaa khanddaa vich jaaneea apane chaj veechaar |3|

I could be famous throughout the nine regions of the earth, for my wisdom and thoughtful contemplation. ||3||

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਕੈਲੀ ਘਾਤੁ ਕੰਞਕਾ ਅਣਚਾਰੀ ਕਾ ਧਾਨੁ ॥

brahaman kailee ghaat kanyakaa anachaaree kaa dhaan |

The four Hindu cardinal sins of murdering a Brahmin, a cow, a female infant, and acceptance of the offerings of an evil person,

ਫਿਟਕ ਫਿਟਕਾ ਕੋੜੁ ਬਦੀਆ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥

fittak fittakaa korr badeea sadaa sadaa abhimaan |

cursed by the world and diseased by leprosy; he is forever and ever filled with egotistical pride.

ਪਾਹਿ ਏਤੇ ਜਾਹਿ ਵੀਸਰਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥

paeh ete jaeh veesar naanakaa ik naam |

One who forgets the Naam, O Nanak, is covered by these sins.

ਸਭ ਬੁਧੀ ਜਾਲੀਅਹਿ ਇਕੁ ਰਹੈ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥੪॥

sabh budhee jaaleeeh ik rahai tat giaan |4|

Let all wisdom be burnt away, except for the essence of spiritual wisdom. ||4||

ਮਾਥੈ ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਮੇਟਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

maathai jo dhur likhiaa su mett na sakai koe |

No one can erase that primal destiny written upon one's forehead.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੋ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥

naanak jo likhiaa so varatadaa so boojhai jis no nadar hoe |5|

O Nanak, whatever is written there, comes to pass. He alone understands, who is blessed by God's Grace. ||5||

ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਗਿ ॥

jinee naam visaariaa koorrai laalach lag |

Those who forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and become attached to greed and fraud,

ਧੰਧਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਿ ॥

dhandhaa maaeaa mohanee antar tisanaa ag |

are engrossed in the entanglements of Maya the enticer, with the fire of desire within them.

ਜਿਨੑਾ ਵੇਲਿ ਨ ਤੂੰਬੜੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਠਗੇ ਠਗਿ ॥

jinaa vel na toonbarree maaeaa tthage tthag |

Those who, like the pumpkin vine, are too stubborn climb the trellis, are cheated by Maya the cheater.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੰਨੑਿ ਚਲਾਈਅਹਿ ਨਾ ਮਿਲਹੀ ਵਗਿ ਸਗਿ ॥

manamukh bana chalaaeeeh naa milahee vag sag |

The self-willed manmukhs are bound and gagged and led away; the dogs do not join the herd of cows.

ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਭੁਲੀਐ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

aap bhulaae bhuleeai aape mel milaae |

The Lord Himself misleads the misguided ones, and He Himself unites them in His Union.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਜੇ ਚਲੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥੬॥

naanak guramukh chhutteeai je chalai satigur bhaae |6|

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are saved; they walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru. ||6||

ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਭੀ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ॥

saalaahee saalaahanaa bhee sachaa saalaeh |

I praise the Praiseworthy Lord, and sing the Praises of the True Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਏਕੁ ਦਰੁ ਬੀਭਾ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਆਹਿ ॥੭॥

naanak sachaa ek dar beebhaa parahar aaeh |7|

O Nanak, the One Lord alone is True; stay away from all other doors. ||7||

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਹ ਜਹ ਮੈ ਫਿਰਉ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

naanak jeh jeh mai firau teh teh saachaa soe |

O Nanak, wherever I go, I find the True Lord.

ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੮॥

jeh dekhaa teh ek hai guramukh paragatt hoe |8|

Wherever I look, I see the One Lord. He reveals Himself to the Gurmukh. ||8||

ਦੂਖ ਵਿਸਾਰਣੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ਕੋਇ ॥

dookh visaaran sabad hai je man vasaae koe |

The Word of the Shabad is the Dispeller of sorrow, if one enshrines it in the mind.

ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਕਰਮ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੯॥

gur kirapaa te man vasai karam paraapat hoe |9|

By Guru's Grace, it dwells in the mind; by God's Mercy, it is obtained. ||9||

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤੇ ਖਪਿ ਮੁਏ ਖੂਹਣਿ ਲਖ ਅਸੰਖ ॥

naanak hau hau karate khap mue khoohan lakh asankh |

O Nanak, acting in egotism, countless thousands have wasted away to death.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੁ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਲੰਖ ॥੧੦॥

satigur mile su ubare saachai sabad alankh |10|

Those who meet with the True Guru are saved, through the Shabad, the True Word of the Inscrutable Lord. ||10||

ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਜਨ ਲਾਗਉ ਪਾਇ ॥

jinaa satigur ik man seviaa tin jan laagau paae |

Those who serve the True Guru single-mindedly - I fall at the feet of those humble beings.

ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੀ ਭੁਖ ਜਾਇ ॥

gurasabadee har man vasai maaeaa kee bhukh jaae |

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord abides in the mind, and the hunger for Maya departs.

ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਊਜਲੇ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

se jan niramal aoojale ji guramukh naam samaae |

Immaculate and pure are those humble beings, who, as Gurmukh, merge in the Naam.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਰਿ ਪਤਿਸਾਹੀਆ ਕੂੜੀਆ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ॥੧੧॥

naanak hor patisaaheea koorreea naam rate paatisaah |11|

O Nanak, other empires are false; they alone are true emperors, who are imbued with the Naam. ||11||

ਜਿਉ ਪੁਰਖੈ ਘਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਹੈ ਅਤਿ ਲੋਚੈ ਭਗਤੀ ਭਾਇ ॥

jiau purakhai ghar bhagatee naar hai at lochai bhagatee bhaae |

The devoted wife in her husband's home has a great longing to perform loving devotional service to him;

ਬਹੁ ਰਸ ਸਾਲਣੇ ਸਵਾਰਦੀ ਖਟ ਰਸ ਮੀਠੇ ਪਾਇ ॥

bahu ras saalane savaaradee khatt ras meetthe paae |

she prepares and offers to him all sorts of sweet delicacies and dishes of all flavors.

ਤਿਉ ਬਾਣੀ ਭਗਤ ਸਲਾਹਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥

tiau baanee bhagat salaahade har naamai chit laae |

In the same way, the devotees praise the Word of the Guru's Bani, and focus their consciousness on the Lord's Name.

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਸਿਰੁ ਵੇਚਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

man tan dhan aagai raakhiaa sir vechiaa gur aagai jaae |

They place mind, body and wealth in offering before the Guru, and sell their heads to Him.

ਭੈ ਭਗਤੀ ਭਗਤ ਬਹੁ ਲੋਚਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਲੋਚਾ ਪੂਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

bhai bhagatee bhagat bahu lochade prabh lochaa poor milaae |

In the Fear of God, His devotees yearn for His devotional worship; God fulfills their desires, and merges them with Himself.

ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਤੁ ਖਾਧੈ ਤਿਪਤਾਇ ॥

har prabh veparavaahu hai kit khaadhai tipataae |

My Lord God is Self-existent and Independent. What does He need to eat to be satisfied?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋ ਚਲੈ ਤਿਪਤਾਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥

satigur kai bhaanai jo chalai tipataasai har gun gaae |

Whoever walks in harmony with the Will of the True Guru, and sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, is pleasing to Him.

ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਕਲਜੁਗਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿ ਚਲੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥੧੨॥

dhan dhan kalajug naanakaa ji chale satigur bhaae |12|

Blessed, blessed are they, in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, O Nanak, who walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru. ||12||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਰਖਿਓ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

satiguroo na sevio sabad na rakhio ur dhaar |

Those who do not serve the True Guru, and do not keep the Shabad enshrined in their hearts

ਧਿਗੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਕਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਕਿਤੁ ਆਏ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥

dhig tinaa kaa jeeviaa kit aae sansaar |

cursed are their lives. Why did they even come into the world?

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਭਉ ਮਨਿ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

guramatee bhau man pavai taan har ras lagai piaar |

If one follows the Guru's Teachings, and keeps the Fear of God in his mind, then he is lovingly attuned to the sublime essence of the Lord.

ਨਾਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਿ ॥੧੩॥

naau milai dhur likhiaa jan naanak paar utaar |13|

By his primal destiny, he obtains the Name; O Nanak, he is carried across. ||13||

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਜਗੁ ਭਰਮਿਆ ਘਰੁ ਮੁਸੈ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

maaeaa mohi jag bharamiaa ghar musai khabar na hoe |

The world wanders lost in emotional attachment to Maya; it does not realize that its own home is being plundered.

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਮਨੁ ਹਿਰਿ ਲਇਆ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧਾ ਲੋਇ ॥

kaam krodh man hir leaa manamukh andhaa loe |

The self-willed manmukh is blind in the world; his mind is lured away by sexual desire and anger.

ਗਿਆਨ ਖੜਗ ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਗੈ ਸੋਇ ॥

giaan kharrag panch doot sanghaare guramat jaagai soe |

With the sword of spiritual wisdom, kill the five demons. Remain awake and aware to the Guru's Teachings.

ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

naam ratan paragaasiaa man tan niramal hoe |

The Jewel of the Naam is revealed, and the mind and body are purified.

ਨਾਮਹੀਨ ਨਕਟੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਹਿ ਰੋਇ ॥

naamaheen nakatte fireh bin naavai beh roe |

Those who lack the Naam wander around lost, with their noses cut off; without the Name, they sit and cry.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਮੇਟਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧੪॥

naanak jo dhur karatai likhiaa su mett na sakai koe |14|

O Nanak, no one can erase that which is pre-ordained by the Creator Lord. ||14||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਖਟਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

guramukhaa har dhan khattiaa gur kai sabad veechaar |

The Gurmukhs earn the wealth of the Lord, contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਅਤੁਟ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥

naam padaarath paaeaa atutt bhare bhanddaar |

They receive the wealth of the Naam; their treasures are overflowing.

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਬਾਣੀ ਉਚਰਹਿ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥

har gun baanee uchareh ant na paaraavaar |

Through the Word of the Guru's Bani, they utter the Glorious Praises of the Lord, whose end and limitations cannot be found.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭ ਕਾਰਣ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੈ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰੁ ॥੧੫॥

naanak sabh kaaran karataa karai vekhai sirajanahaar |15|

O Nanak, the Creator is the Doer of all; the Creator Lord beholds all. ||15||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਜੁ ਹੈ ਮਨੁ ਚੜਿਆ ਦਸਵੈ ਆਕਾਸਿ ॥

guramukh antar sehaj hai man charriaa dasavai aakaas |

Within the Gurmukh is intuitive peace and poise; his mind ascends to the Tenth Plane of the Akaashic Ethers.

ਤਿਥੈ ਊਂਘ ਨ ਭੁਖ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਖ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

tithai aoongh na bhukh hai har amrit naam sukh vaas |

No one is sleepy or hungry there; they dwell in the peace of the Ambrosial Name of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਵਿਆਪਤ ਨਹੀ ਜਿਥੈ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੧੬॥

naanak dukh sukh viaapat nahee jithai aatam raam pragaas |16|

O Nanak, pain and pleasure do not afflict anyone, where the Light of the Lord, the Supreme Soul, illuminates. ||16||

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕਾ ਚੋਲੜਾ ਸਭ ਗਲਿ ਆਏ ਪਾਇ ॥

kaam krodh kaa cholarraa sabh gal aae paae |

All have come, wearing the robes of sexual desire and anger.

ਇਕਿ ਉਪਜਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਂਹਿ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

eik upajeh ik binas jaanhi hukame aavai jaae |

Some are born, and some pass away. They come and go according to the Hukam of the Lord's Command.

ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਗਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥

jaman maran na chukee rang lagaa doojai bhaae |

Their comings and goings in reincarnation do not end; they are imbued with the love of duality.

ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬੰਧਿ ਭਵਾਈਅਨੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੭॥

bandhan bandh bhavaaeean karanaa kachhoo na jaae |17|

Bound in bondage, they are made to wander, and they cannot do anything about it. ||17||

ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀਅਨੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਆਇ ॥

jin kau kirapaa dhaareean tinaa satigur miliaa aae |

Those, upon whom the Lord showers His Mercy, come and meet the True Guru.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਉਲਟੀ ਭਈ ਮਰਿ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

satigur mile ulattee bhee mar jeeviaa sehaj subhaae |

Meeting with the True Guru, they turn away from the world; they remain dead while still alive, with intuitive peace and poise.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧੮॥

naanak bhagatee ratiaa har har naam samaae |18|

O Nanak, the devotees are imbued with the Lord; they are absorbed in the Name of the Lord. ||18||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਚੰਚਲ ਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥

manamukh chanchal mat hai antar bahut chaturaaee |

The intellect of the self-willed manmukh is fickle; he is very tricky and clever within.

ਕੀਤਾ ਕਰਤਿਆ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਗਇਆ ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

keetaa karatiaa birathaa geaa ik til thaae na paaee |

Whatever he has done, and all that he does, is useless. Not even an iota of it is acceptable.

ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨੁ ਜੋ ਬੀਜਦੇ ਸਭ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੈ ਜਾਈ ॥

pun daan jo beejade sabh dharam raae kai jaaee |

The charity and generosity he pretends to give will be judged by the Righteous Judge of Dharma.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਖੁਆਈ ॥

bin satiguroo jamakaal na chhoddee doojai bhaae khuaaee |

Without the True Guru, the Messenger of Death does not leave the mortal alone; he is ruined by the love of duality.

ਜੋਬਨੁ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਜਰੁ ਪਹੁਚੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈ ॥

joban jaandaa nadar na aavee jar pahuchai mar jaaee |

Youth slips away imperceptibly, old age comes, and then he dies.

ਪੁਤੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਹੈ ਅੰਤਿ ਬੇਲੀ ਕੋ ਨ ਸਖਾਈ ॥

put kalat mohu het hai ant belee ko na sakhaaee |

The mortal is caught in love and emotional attachment to children and spouse, but none of them will be his helper and support in the end.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਨਾਉ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਈ ॥

satigur seve so sukh paae naau vasai man aaee |

Whoever serves the True Guru finds peace; the Name comes to abide in the mind.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਵਡੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੧੯॥

naanak se vadde vaddabhaagee ji guramukh naam samaaee |19|

O Nanak, great and very fortunate are those who, as Gurmukh, are absorbed in the Naam. ||19||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਨੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖ ਰੋਇ ॥

manamukh naam na chetanee bin naavai dukh roe |

The self-willed manmukhs do not even think of the Name; without the Name, they cry in pain.

ਆਤਮਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਪੂਜਨੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

aatamaa raam na poojanee doojai kiau sukh hoe |

They do not worship the Lord, the Supreme Soul; how can they find peace in duality?

ਹਉਮੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਹੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਕਾਢਹਿ ਧੋਇ ॥

haumai antar mail hai sabad na kaadteh dhoe |

They are filled with the filth of egotism; they do not wash it away with the Word of the Shabad.

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੈਲਿਆ ਮੁਏ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਖੋਇ ॥੨੦॥

naanak bin naavai mailiaa mue janam padaarath khoe |20|

O Nanak, without the Name, they die in their filth; they waste the priceless opportunity of this human life. ||20||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੋਲੇ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਅਗਨੀ ਕਾ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

manamukh bole andhule tis meh aganee kaa vaas |

The self-willed manmukhs are deaf and blind; they are filled with the fire of desire.

ਬਾਣੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨ ਬੁਝਨੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਕਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥

baanee surat na bujhanee sabad na kareh pragaas |

They have no intuitive understanding of the Guru's Bani; they are not illumined with the Shabad.

ਓਨਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸੁਧਿ ਨਹੀ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨਿ ਨ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਿਸਾਸੁ ॥

onaa aapanee andar sudh nahee gur bachan na kareh visaas |

They do not know their own inner being, and they have no faith in the Guru's Word.

ਗਿਆਨੀਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਨਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਗਾਸੁ ॥

giaaneea andar gurasabad hai nit har liv sadaa vigaas |

The Word of the Guru's Shabad is within the being of the spiritually wise ones. They always blossom in His love.

ਹਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੀਆ ਕੀ ਰਖਦਾ ਹਉ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਤਾਸੁ ॥

har giaaneea kee rakhadaa hau sad balihaaree taas |

The Lord saves the honor of the spiritually wise ones.I am forever a sacrifice to them.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ॥੨੧॥

guramukh jo har sevade jan naanak taa kaa daas |21|

Servant Nanak is the slave of those Gurmukhs who serve the Lord. ||21||

ਮਾਇਆ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਮੁ ਸਰਪੁ ਹੈ ਜਗੁ ਘੇਰਿਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇ ॥

maaeaa bhueiangam sarap hai jag gheriaa bikh maae |

The poisonous snake, the serpent of Maya, has surrounded the world with its coils, O mother!

ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਮਾਰਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਗਰੁੜ ਸਬਦੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

bikh kaa maaran har naam hai gur garurr sabad mukh paae |

The antidote to this poisonous venom is the Name of the Lord; the Guru places the magic spell of the Shabad into the mouth.

ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਆਇ ॥

jin kau poorab likhiaa tin satigur miliaa aae |

Those who are blessed with such pre-ordained destiny come and meet the True Guru.

ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਇਆ ਬਿਲਾਇ ॥

mil satigur niramal hoeaa bikh haumai geaa bilaae |

Meeting with the True Guru, they become immaculate, and the poison of egotism is eradicated.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਕੇ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਇ ॥

guramukhaa ke mukh ujale har daragah sobhaa paae |

Radiant and bright are the faces of the Gurmukhs; they are honored in the Court of the Lord.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਦਾ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ਤਿਨ ਜੋ ਚਾਲਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥੨੨॥

jan naanak sadaa kurabaan tin jo chaaleh satigur bhaae |22|

Servant Nanak is forever a sacrifice to those who walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru. ||22||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਹੈ ਨਿਤ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

satigur purakh niravair hai nit hiradai har liv laae |

The True Guru, the Primal Being, has no hatred or vengeance. His heart is constantly attuned to the Lord.

ਨਿਰਵੈਰੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਵੈਰੁ ਰਚਾਇਦਾ ਅਪਣੈ ਘਰਿ ਲੂਕੀ ਲਾਇ ॥

niravairai naal vair rachaaeidaa apanai ghar lookee laae |

Whoever directs hatred against the Guru, who has no hatred at all, only sets his own home on fire.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਲੈ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ॥

antar krodh ahankaar hai anadin jalai sadaa dukh paae |

Anger and egotism are within him night and day; he burns, and suffers constant pain.

ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਨਿਤ ਭਉਕਦੇ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਧੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥

koorr bol bol nit bhaukade bikh khaadhe doojai bhaae |

They babble and tell lies, and keep on barking, eating the poison of the love of duality.

ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਭਰਮਦੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਇ ॥

bikh maaeaa kaaran bharamade fir ghar ghar pat gavaae |

For the sake of the poison of Maya, they wander from house to house, and lose their honor.

ਬੇਸੁਆ ਕੇਰੇ ਪੂਤ ਜਿਉ ਪਿਤਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

besuaa kere poot jiau pitaa naam tis jaae |

They are like the son of a prostitute, who does not know the name of his father.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਨੀ ਕਰਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਇ ॥

har har naam na chetanee karatai aap khuaae |

They do not remember the Name of the Lord, Har, Har; the Creator Himself brings them to ruin.

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀਅਨੁ ਜਨ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

har guramukh kirapaa dhaareean jan vichhurre aap milaae |

The Lord showers His Mercy upon the Gurmukhs, and reunites the separated ones with Himself.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਣੈ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਲਾਗੇ ਪਾਇ ॥੨੩॥

jan naanak tis balihaaranai jo satigur laage paae |23|

Servant Nanak is a sacrifice to those who fall at the Feet of the True Guru. ||23||

ਨਾਮਿ ਲਗੇ ਸੇ ਊਬਰੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਜਾਂਹਿ ॥

naam lage se aoobare bin naavai jam pur jaanhi |

Those who are attached to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are saved; without the Name, they must go to the City of Death.

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਆਇ ਗਏ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ॥੨੪॥

naanak bin naavai sukh nahee aae ge pachhutaeh |24|

O Nanak, without the Name, they find no peace; they come and go in reincarnation with regrets. ||24||

ਚਿੰਤਾ ਧਾਵਤ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ ਤਾਂ ਮਨਿ ਭਇਆ ਅਨੰਦੁ ॥

chintaa dhaavat reh ge taan man bheaa anand |

When anxiety and wanderings come to an end, the mind becomes happy.

ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੀ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਸੁਤੀ ਨਿਚਿੰਦ ॥

gur prasaadee bujheeai saa dhan sutee nichind |

By Guru's Grace, the soul-bride understands, and then she sleeps without worry.

ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ॥

jin kau poorab likhiaa tinaa bhettiaa gur govind |

Those who have such pre-ordained destiny meet with the Guru, the Lord of the Universe.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦੁ ॥੨੫॥

naanak sahaje mil rahe har paaeaa paramaanand |25|

O Nanak, they merge intuitively into the Lord, the Embodiment of Supreme Bliss. ||25||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

satigur sevan aapanaa gurasabadee veechaar |

Those who serve their True Guru, who contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad,

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਲੈਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖਹਿ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

satigur kaa bhaanaa man lain har naam rakheh ur dhaar |

who honor and obey the Will of the True Guru, who keep the Lord's Name enshrined within their hearts,

ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਮੰਨੀਅਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਗੇ ਵਾਪਾਰਿ ॥

aithai othai maneean har naam lage vaapaar |

are honored, here and hereafter; they are dedicated to the business of the Lord's Name.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿਞਾਪਦੇ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥

guramukh sabad siyaapade tith saachai darabaar |

Through the Word of the Shabad, the Gurmukhs gain recognition in that Court of the True Lord.

ਸਚਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਖਰਚੁ ਸਚੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਿਰਮੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

sachaa saudaa kharach sach antar piram piaar |

The True Name is their merchandise, the True Name is their expenditure; the Love of their Beloved fills their inner beings.

ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਆਪਿ ਬਖਸੇ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥

jamakaal nerr na aavee aap bakhase karataar |

The Messenger of Death does not even approach them; the Creator Lord Himself forgives them.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਧਨਵੰਤ ਹੈਨਿ ਨਿਰਧਨੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੨੬॥

naanak naam rate se dhanavant hain niradhan hor sansaar |26|

O Nanak, they alone are wealthy, who are imbued with the Naam; the rest of the world is poor. ||26||

ਜਨ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਠਵਰ ਨ ਠਾਉ ॥

jan kee ttek har naam har bin naavai tthavar na tthaau |

The Lord's Name is the Support of the Lord's humble servants. Without the Lord's Name, the there is no other place, no place of rest.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਉ ॥

guramatee naau man vasai sahaje sehaj samaau |

Following the Guru's Teachings, the Name abides in the mind, and one is intuitively, automatically absorbed in the Lord.

ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਭਾਉ ॥

vaddabhaagee naam dhiaaeaa ahinis laagaa bhaau |

Those with great good fortune meditate on the Naam; night and day, they embrace love for the Name.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਧੂੜਿ ਤਿਨ ਹਉ ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੈ ਜਾਉ ॥੨੭॥

jan naanak mangai dhoorr tin hau sad kurabaanai jaau |27|

Servant Nanak begs for the dust of their feet; I am forever a sacrifice to them. ||27||

ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਮੇਦਨੀ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਜਲਤੀ ਕਰੇ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥

lakh chauraaseeh medanee tisanaa jalatee kare pukaar |

The 8.4 million species of beings burn in desire and cry in pain.

ਇਹੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਚਲੈ ਨ ਅੰਤੀ ਵਾਰ ॥

eihu mohu maaeaa sabh pasariaa naal chalai na antee vaar |

All this show of emotional attachment to Maya shall not go with you at that very last instant.

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥

bin har saant na aavee kis aagai karee pukaar |

Without the Lord, peace and tranquility do not come; unto whom should we go and complain?

ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਬੂਝਿਆ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬਿਚਾਰੁ ॥

vaddabhaagee satigur paaeaa boojhiaa braham bichaar |

By great good fortune, one meets the True Guru, and comes to understand the contemplation of God.

ਤਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਭ ਬੁਝਿ ਗਈ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨੮॥

tisanaa agan sabh bujh gee jan naanak har ur dhaar |28|

The fire of desire is totally extinguished, O servant Nanak, enshrining the Lord within the heart. ||28||

ਅਸੀ ਖਤੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥

asee khate bahut kamaavade ant na paaraavaar |

I make so many mistakes, there is no end or limit to them.

ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਬਖਸਿ ਲੈਹੁ ਹਉ ਪਾਪੀ ਵਡ ਗੁਨਹਗਾਰੁ ॥

har kirapaa kar kai bakhas laihu hau paapee vadd gunahagaar |

O Lord, please be merciful and forgive me; I am a sinner, a great offender.

ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਲੇਖੈ ਵਾਰ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਤੂੰ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

har jeeo lekhai vaar na aavee toon bakhas milaavanahaar |

O Dear Lord, if You made an account of my mistakes, my turn to be forgiven would not even come. Please forgive me, and unite me with Yourself.

ਗੁਰ ਤੁਠੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਲਿਆ ਸਭ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਕਟਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥

gur tutthai har prabh meliaa sabh kilavikh katt vikaar |

The Guru, in His Pleasure, has united me with the Lord God; He has cut away all my sinful mistakes.

ਜਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨੑ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ॥੨੯॥

jinaa har har naam dhiaaeaa jan naanak tina jaikaar |29|

Servant Nanak celebrates the victory of those who meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||29||

ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਜੋ ਮਿਲੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਭੈ ਭਾਇ ॥

vichhurr vichhurr jo mile satigur ke bhai bhaae |

Those who have been separated and alienated from the Lord are united with Him again, through the Fear and the Love of the True Guru.

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਭਏ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥

janam maran nihachal bhe guramukh naam dhiaae |

They escape the cycle of birth and death, and, as Gurmukh, they meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਗੁਰ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਹੀਰੇ ਰਤਨ ਲਭੰਨੑਿ ॥

gur saadhoo sangat milai heere ratan labhana |

Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Guru's Congregation, the diamonds and jewels are obtained.

ਨਾਨਕ ਲਾਲੁ ਅਮੋਲਕਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹੰਨੑਿ ॥੩੦॥

naanak laal amolakaa guramukh khoj lahana |30|

O Nanak, the jewel is priceless; the Gurmukhs seek and find it. ||30||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਧਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਧਿਗੁ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

manamukh naam na chetio dhig jeevan dhig vaas |

The self-willed manmukhs do not even think of the Naam. Cursed are their lives, and cursed are their homes.

ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਖਾਣਾ ਪੈਨਣਾ ਸੋ ਮਨਿ ਨ ਵਸਿਓ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥

jis daa ditaa khaanaa painanaa so man na vasio gunataas |

That Lord who gives them so much to eat and wear - they do not enshrine that Lord, the Treasure of Virtue, in their minds.

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਭੇਦਿਓ ਕਿਉ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਰ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

eihu man sabad na bhedio kiau hovai ghar vaas |

This mind is not pierced by the Word of the Shabad; how can it come to dwell in its true home?

ਮਨਮੁਖੀਆ ਦੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਿ ਮੁਈਆਸੁ ॥

manamukheea dohaaganee aavan jaan mueeaas |

The self-willed manmukhs are like discarded brides, ruined by coming and going in the cycle of reincarnation.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਹਾਗੁ ਹੈ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਮਣੀ ਲਿਖਿਆਸੁ ॥

guramukh naam suhaag hai masatak manee likhiaas |

The Gurmukhs are embellished and exalted by the Naam, the Name of the Lord; the jewel of destiny is engraved upon their foreheads.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕਮਲ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥

har har naam ur dhaariaa har hiradai kamal pragaas |

They enshrine the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, within their hearts; the Lord illumines their heart-lotus.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਹਉ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਤਾਸੁ ॥

satigur sevan aapanaa hau sad balihaaree taas |

I am forever a sacrifice to those who serve their True Guru.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਜਿਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੩੧॥

naanak tin mukh ujale jin antar naam pragaas |31|

O Nanak, radiant and bright are the faces of those whose inner beings are illuminated with the Light of the Naam. ||31||

ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਸਿਝੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

sabad marai soee jan sijhai bin sabadai mukat na hoee |

Those who die in the Word of the Shabad are saved. Without the Shabad, no one is liberated.

ਭੇਖ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਵਿਗੁਤੇ ਭਾਇ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਰਜ ਵਿਗੋਈ ॥

bhekh kareh bahu karam vigute bhaae doojai paraj vigoee |

They wear religious robes and perform all sorts of rituals, but they are ruined; in the love of duality, their world is ruined.

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਉ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਲੋਚੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੩੨॥

naanak bin satigur naau na paaeeai je sau lochai koee |32|

O Nanak, without the True Guru, the Name is not obtained, even though one may long for it hundreds of times. ||32||

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਅਤਿ ਵਡ ਊਚਾ ਊਚੀ ਹੂ ਊਚਾ ਹੋਈ ॥

har kaa naau at vadd aoochaa aoochee hoo aoochaa hoee |

The Name of the Lord is utterly great, lofty and high, the highest of the high.

ਅਪੜਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਲੋਚੈ ਕੋਈ ॥

aparr koe na sakee je sau lochai koee |

No one can climb up to it, even though one may long for it, hundreds of times.

ਮੁਖਿ ਸੰਜਮ ਹਛਾ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਕਰਿ ਭੇਖ ਭਵੈ ਸਭ ਕੋਈ ॥

mukh sanjam hachhaa na hovee kar bhekh bhavai sabh koee |

Speaking about self-discipline, no one become pure; everyone walks around wearing religious robes.

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਉੜੀ ਜਾਇ ਚੜੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥

gur kee paurree jaae charrai karam paraapat hoee |

Those blessed by the karma of good deeds go and climb the ladder of the Guru.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਆਇ ਵਸੈ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

antar aae vasai gurasabad veechaarai koe |

The Lord comes and dwells within that one who contemplates the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੀਐ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚੀ ਸੋਇ ॥੩੩॥

naanak sabad marai man maaneeai saache saachee soe |33|

O Nanak, when someone dies in the Word of the Shabad, the mind is pleased and appeased. True is the reputation of those who are true. ||33||

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਹੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਤਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

maaeaa mohu dukh saagar hai bikh dutar tariaa na jaae |

Emotional attachment to Maya is a treacherous ocean of pain and poison, which cannot be crossed.

ਮੇਰਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥

meraa meraa karade pach mue haumai karat vihaae |

Screaming, "Mine, mine!", they rot and die; they pass their lives in egotism.

ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਉਰਵਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਅਧ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਹੇ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥

manamukhaa uravaar na paar hai adh vich rahe lapattaae |

The self-willed manmukhs are in limbo, neither on this side, nor the other; they are stuck in the middle.

ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

jo dhur likhiaa su kamaavanaa karanaa kachhoo na jaae |

They act as they are pre-destined; they cannot do anything else.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਭੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

guramatee giaan ratan man vasai sabh dekhiaa braham subhaae |

Following the Guru's Teachings, the jewel of spiritual wisdom abides in the mind, and then God is easily seen in all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਬੋਹਿਥੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਚੜੈ ਤੇ ਭਉਜਲਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਇ ॥੩੪॥

naanak satigur bohithai vaddabhaagee charrai te bhaujal paar langhaae |34|

O Nanak, the very fortunate ones embark on the Boat of the True Guru; they are carried across the terrifying world-ocean. ||34||

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦਾਤਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਇ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥

bin satigur daataa ko nahee jo har naam dee aadhaar |

Without the True Guru, there is no giver who can bestow the Support of the Lord's Name.

ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਨਾਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

gur kirapaa te naau man vasai sadaa rahai ur dhaar |

By Guru's Grace, the Name comes to dwell in the mind; keep it enshrined in your heart.

ਤਿਸਨਾ ਬੁਝੈ ਤਿਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਇ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

tisanaa bujhai tipat hoe har kai naae piaar |

The fire of desire is extinguished, and one finds satisfaction, through the Love of the Name of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਅਪਨੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੩੫॥

naanak guramukh paaeeai har apanee kirapaa dhaar |35|

O Nanak, the Gurmukh finds the Lord, when He showers His Mercy. ||35||

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਜਗਤੁ ਬਰਲਿਆ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

bin sabadai jagat baraliaa kahanaa kachhoo na jaae |

Without the Shabad, the world is so insane, that it cannot even be described.

ਹਰਿ ਰਖੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

har rakhe se ubare sabad rahe liv laae |

Those who are protected by the Lord are saved; they remain lovingly attuned to the Word of the Shabad.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਖੀ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਇ ॥੩੬॥

naanak karataa sabh kichh jaanadaa jin rakhee banat banaae |36|

O Nanak, the Creator who made this making knows everything. ||36||

ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਸਭਿ ਤੀਰਥਾ ਪੜੑਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਥਕੇ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥

hom jag sabh teerathaa parra panddit thake puraan |

The Pandits, the religious scholars, have grown weary of making fire-offerings and sacrifices, making pilgrimages to all the sacred shrines, and reading the Puraanas.

ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਈ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

bikh maaeaa mohu na mittee vich haumai aavan jaan |

But they cannot get rid of the poison of emotional attachment to Maya; they continue to come and go in egotism.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਮਲੁ ਉਤਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿਆ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥

satigur miliai mal utaree har japiaa purakh sujaan |

Meeting with the True Guru, one's filth is washed off, meditating on the Lord, the Primal Being, the All-knowing One.

ਜਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥੩੭॥

jinaa har har prabh seviaa jan naanak sad kurabaan |37|

Servant Nanak is forever a sacrifice to those who serve their Lord God. ||37||

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਬਹੁ ਚਿਤਵਦੇ ਬਹੁ ਆਸਾ ਲੋਭੁ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥

maaeaa mohu bahu chitavade bahu aasaa lobh vikaar |

Mortals give great thought to Maya and emotional attachment; they harbor great hopes, in greed and corruption.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਨਾ ਥੀਐ ਮਰਿ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਖਿਨ ਵਾਰ ॥

manamukh asathir naa theeai mar binas jaae khin vaar |

The self-willed manmukhs do not become steady and stable; they die and are gone in an instant.

ਵਡਭਾਗੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਜੈ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥

vaddabhaag hovai satigur milai haumai tajai vikaar |

Only those who are blessed with great good fortune meet the True Guru, and leave behind their egotism and corruption.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਜਪਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥੩੮॥

har naamaa jap sukh paaeaa jan naanak sabad veechaar |38|

Chanting the Name of the Lord, they find peace; servant Nanak contemplates the Word of the Shabad. ||38||

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

bin satigur bhagat na hovee naam na lagai piaar |

Without the True Guru, there is no devotional worship, and no love of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥੩੯॥

jan naanak naam araadhiaa gur kai het piaar |39|

Servant Nanak worships and adores the Naam, with love and affection for the Guru. ||39||

ਲੋਭੀ ਕਾ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਜੇ ਕਾ ਪਾਰਿ ਵਸਾਇ ॥

lobhee kaa vesaahu na keejai je kaa paar vasaae |

Do not trust greedy people, if you can avoid doing so.

ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਤਿਥੈ ਧੁਹੈ ਜਿਥੈ ਹਥੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

ant kaal tithai dhuhai jithai hath na paae |

At the very last moment, they will deceive you there, where no one will be able to lend a helping hand.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੇਤੀ ਸੰਗੁ ਕਰੇ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲਖ ਦਾਗੁ ਲਗਾਇ ॥

manamukh setee sang kare muhi kaalakh daag lagaae |

Whoever associates with the self-willed manmukhs, will have his face blackened and dirtied.

ਮੁਹ ਕਾਲੇ ਤਿਨੑ ਲੋਭੀਆਂ ਜਾਸਨਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥

muh kaale tina lobheean jaasan janam gavaae |

Black are the faces of those greedy people; they lose their lives, and leave in disgrace.

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥

satasangat har mel prabh har naam vasai man aae |

O Lord, let me join the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation; may the Name of the Lord God abide in my mind.

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਉਤਰੈ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੪੦॥

janam maran kee mal utarai jan naanak har gun gaae |40|

The filth and pollution of birth and death is washed away, O servant Nanak, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||40||

ਧੁਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਮੇਟਣਾ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

dhur har prabh karatai likhiaa su mettanaa na jaae |

Whatever is pre-destined by the Lord God Creator, cannot be erased.

ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਿ ਕਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥

jeeo pindd sabh tis daa pratipaal kare har raae |

Body and soul are all His. The Sovereign Lord King cherishes all.

ਚੁਗਲ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਭੁਖੇ ਰੁਲਿ ਮੁਏ ਏਨਾ ਹਥੁ ਨ ਕਿਥਾਊ ਪਾਇ ॥

chugal nindak bhukhe rul mue enaa hath na kithaaoo paae |

The gossipers and slanderers shall remain hungry and die, rolling in the dust; their hands cannot reach anywhere.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਪਾਖੰਡ ਸਭ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥

baahar paakhandd sabh karam kareh man hiradai kapatt kamaae |

Outwardly, they do all the proper deeds, but they are hypocrites; in their minds and hearts, they practice deception and fraud.

ਖੇਤਿ ਸਰੀਰਿ ਜੋ ਬੀਜੀਐ ਸੋ ਅੰਤਿ ਖਲੋਆ ਆਇ ॥

khet sareer jo beejeeai so ant khaloaa aae |

Whatever is planted in the farm of the body, shall come and stand before them in the end.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੪੧॥

naanak kee prabh benatee har bhaavai bakhas milaae |41|

Nanak offers this prayer: O Lord God, please forgive me, and unite me with Yourself. ||41||

ਮਨ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੁ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਨਾ ਸੁਝੈ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ ॥

man aavan jaan na sujhee naa sujhai darabaar |

The mortal being does not understand the comings and goings of reincarnation; he does not see the Court of the Lord.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਪਲੇਟਿਆ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥

maaeaa mohi palettiaa antar agiaan gubaar |

He is wrapped up in emotional attachment and Maya, and within his being is the darkness of ignorance.

ਤਬ ਨਰੁ ਸੁਤਾ ਜਾਗਿਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਡੰਡੁ ਲਗਾ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਰੁ ॥

tab nar sutaa jaagiaa sir ddandd lagaa bahu bhaar |

The sleeping person wakes, only when he is hit on the head by a heavy club.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਕਰਾਂ ਉਪਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤਿਆ ਸੇ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥

guramukhaan karaan upar har chetiaa se paaein mokh duaar |

The Gurmukhs dwell upon the Lord; they find the door of salvation.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਓਹਿ ਉਧਰੇ ਸਭ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਤਰੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ॥੪੨॥

naanak aap ohi udhare sabh kuttanb tare paravaar |42|

O Nanak, they themselves are saved, and all their relatives are carried across as well. ||42||

ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਸੋ ਮੁਆ ਜਾਪੈ ॥

sabad marai so muaa jaapai |

Whoever dies in the Word of the Shabad, is known to be truly dead.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੈ ॥

gur parasaadee har ras dhraapai |

By Guru's Grace, the mortal is satisfied by the sublime essence of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿਞਾਪੈ ॥

har darageh gur sabad siyaapai |

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he is recognized in the Court of the Lord.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੁਆ ਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

bin sabadai muaa hai sabh koe |

Without the Shabad, everyone is dead.

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਮੁਆ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਖੋਇ ॥

manamukh muaa apunaa janam khoe |

The self-willed manmukh dies; his life is wasted.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਰੋਇ ॥

har naam na cheteh ant dukh roe |

Those who do not remember the Name of the Lord, shall cry in pain in the end.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੪੩॥

naanak karataa kare su hoe |43|

O Nanak, whatever the Creator Lord does, comes to pass. ||43||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੁਢੇ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥

guramukh budte kade naahee jinaa antar surat giaan |

The Gurmukhs never grow old; within them is intuitive understanding and spiritual wisdom.

ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਜ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥

sadaa sadaa har gun raveh antar sehaj dhiaan |

They chant the Praises of the Lord, forever and ever; deep within, they intuitively meditate on the Lord.

ਓਇ ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦਿ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਰਹਹਿ ਦੁਖਿ ਸੁਖਿ ਏਕ ਸਮਾਨਿ ॥

oe sadaa anand bibek raheh dukh sukh ek samaan |

They dwell forever in blissful knowledge of the Lord; they look upon pain and pleasure as one and the same.

ਤਿਨਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਇਕੋ ਆਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਨੁ ॥੪੪॥

tinaa nadaree iko aaeaa sabh aatam raam pachhaan |44|

They see the One Lord in all, and realize the Lord, the Supreme Soul of all. ||44||

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਬਾਲਕੁ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਸਮਾਨਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

manamukh baalak biradh samaan hai jinaa antar har surat naahee |

The self-willed manmukhs are like stupid children; they do not keep the Lord in their thoughts.

ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਸਭ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੈ ਜਾਂਹੀ ॥

vich haumai karam kamaavade sabh dharam raae kai jaanhee |

They do all their deeds in egotism, and they must answer to the Righteous Judge of Dharma.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਛੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

guramukh hachhe niramale gur kai sabad subhaae |

The Gurmukhs are good and immaculately pure; they are embellished and exalted with the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਓਨਾ ਮੈਲੁ ਪਤੰਗੁ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਜਿ ਚਲਨਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥

onaa mail patang na lagee ji chalan satigur bhaae |

Not even a tiny bit of filth sticks to them; they walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਧੋਵਣ ਪਾਇ ॥

manamukh jootth na utarai je sau dhovan paae |

The filth of the manmukhs is not washed away, even if they wash hundreds of times.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲਿਅਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੪੫॥

naanak guramukh melian gur kai ank samaae |45|

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are united with the Lord; they merge into the Guru's Being. ||45||

ਬੁਰਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਸਿਝੈ ॥

buraa kare su kehaa sijhai |

How can someone do bad things, and still live with himself?

ਆਪਣੈ ਰੋਹਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਦਝੈ ॥

aapanai rohi aape hee dajhai |

By his own anger, he only burns himself.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਮਲਾ ਰਗੜੈ ਲੁਝੈ ॥

manamukh kamalaa ragarrai lujhai |

The self-willed manmukh drives himself crazy with worries and stubborn struggles.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੁਝੈ ॥

guramukh hoe tis sabh kichh sujhai |

But those who become Gurmukh understand everything.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨ ਸਿਉ ਲੁਝੈ ॥੪੬॥

naanak guramukh man siau lujhai |46|

O Nanak, the Gurmukh struggles with his own mind. ||46||

ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਕੀਤੋ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

jinaa satigur purakh na sevio sabad na keeto veechaar |

Those who do not serve the True Guru, the Primal Being, and do not reflect upon the Word of the Shabad

ਓਇ ਮਾਣਸ ਜੂਨਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਪਸੂ ਢੋਰ ਗਾਵਾਰ ॥

oe maanas joon na aakheean pasoo dtor gaavaar |

- do not call them human beings; they are just animals and stupid beasts.

ਓਨਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

onaa antar giaan na dhiaan hai har sau preet na piaar |

They have no spiritual wisdom or meditation within their beings; they are not in love with the Lord.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੁਏ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਮਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥

manamukh mue vikaar meh mar jameh vaaro vaar |

The self-willed manmukhs die in evil and corruption; they die and are reborn, again and again.

ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਨੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁ ਜੀਵਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

jeevadiaa no milai su jeevade har jagajeevan ur dhaar |

They alone live, who join with the living; enshrine the Lord, the Lord of Life, within your heart.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੪੭॥

naanak guramukh sohane tith sachai darabaar |47|

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs look beautiful in that Court of the True Lord. ||47||

ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

har mandar har saajiaa har vasai jis naal |

The Lord built the Harimandir, the Temple of the Lord; the Lord dwells within it.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਰਜਾਲਿ ॥

guramatee har paaeaa maaeaa moh parajaal |

Following the Guru's Teachings, I have found the Lord; my emotional attachment to Maya has been burnt away.

ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਅਨੇਕ ਹੈ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥

har mandar vasat anek hai nav nidh naam samaal |

Countless things are in the Harimandir, the Temple of the Lord; contemplate the Naam, and the nine treasures will be yours.

ਧਨੁ ਭਗਵੰਤੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਧਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਲਿ ॥

dhan bhagavantee naanakaa jinaa guramukh ladhaa har bhaal |

Blessed is that happy soul-bride, O Nanak, who, as Gurmukh, seeks and finds the Lord.

ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਗੜ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਖੋਜਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੪੮॥

vaddabhaagee garr mandar khojiaa har hiradai paaeaa naal |48|

By great good fortune, one searches the temple of the body-fortress, and finds the Lord within the heart. ||48||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਅਤਿ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥

manamukh deh dis fir rahe at tisanaa lobh vikaar |

The self-willed manmukhs wander lost in the ten directions, led by intense desire, greed and corruption.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥

maaeaa mohu na chukee mar jameh vaaro vaar |

Their attachment to Maya does not cease; they die, only to be reborn, over and over again.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਅਤਿ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਤਜਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥

satigur sev sukh paaeaa at tisanaa taj vikaar |

Serving the True Guru, peace is found; intense desire and corruption are discarded.

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਗਇਆ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੪੯॥

janam maran kaa dukh geaa jan naanak sabad beechaar |49|

The pains of death and birth are taken away; servant Nanak reflects upon the Word of the Shabad. ||49||

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

har har naam dhiaae man har daragah paaveh maan |

Meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O mortal being, and you shall be honored in the Court of the Lord.

ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਪਾਪ ਸਭਿ ਕਟੀਅਹਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਚੁਕੈ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥

kilavikh paap sabh katteeeh haumai chukai gumaan |

All your sins and terrible mistakes shall be taken away, and you shall be rid of your pride and egotism.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਵਿਗਸਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਆਤਮ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਛਾਨੁ ॥

guramukh kamal vigasiaa sabh aatam braham pachhaan |

The heart-lotus of the Gurmukh blossoms forth, realizing God, the Soul of all.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੫੦॥

har har kirapaa dhaar prabh jan naanak jap har naam |50|

O Lord God, please shower Your Mercy upon servant Nanak, that he may chant the Name of the Lord. ||50||

ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਧਨਵੰਤੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਜਾਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥

dhanaasaree dhanavantee jaaneeai bhaaee jaan satigur kee kaar kamaae |

In Dhanaasaree, the soul-bride is known to be wealthy, O Siblings of Destiny, when she works for the True Guru.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਉਪੇ ਜੀਅ ਸਉ ਭਾਈ ਲਏ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਫਿਰਾਉ ॥

tan man saupe jeea sau bhaaee le hukam firaau |

She surrenders her body, mind and soul, O Siblings of Destiny, and lives according to the Hukam of His Command.

ਜਹ ਬੈਸਾਵਹਿ ਬੈਸਹ ਭਾਈ ਜਹ ਭੇਜਹਿ ਤਹ ਜਾਉ ॥

jeh baisaaveh baisah bhaaee jeh bhejeh teh jaau |

I sit where He wishes me to sit, O Siblings of Destiny; wherever He sends me, I go.

ਏਵਡੁ ਧਨੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਈ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

evadd dhan hor ko nahee bhaaee jevadd sachaa naau |

There is no other wealth as great, O Siblings of Destiny; such is the greatness of the True Name.

ਸਦਾ ਸਚੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾਂ ਭਾਈ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੇ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

sadaa sache ke gun gaavaan bhaaee sadaa sache kai sang rahaau |

I sing forever the Glorious Praises of the True Lord; I shall remain with the True One forever.

ਪੈਨਣੁ ਗੁਣ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਭਾਈ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਸਾਦ ਆਪੇ ਖਾਇ ॥

painan gun changiaaeea bhaaee aapanee pat ke saad aape khaae |

So wear the clothes of His Glorious Virtues and goodness, O Siblings of Destiny; eat and enjoy the flavor of your own honor.

ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਉ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

tis kaa kiaa saalaaheeai bhaaee darasan kau bal jaae |

How can I praise Him, O Siblings of Destiny? I am a sacrifice to the Blessed Vision of His Darshan.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਡੀਆ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾਂ ਪਾਇ ॥

satigur vich vaddeea vaddiaaeea bhaaee karam milai taan paae |

Great is the Glorious Greatness of the True Guru, O Siblings of Destiny; if one is blessed with good karma, He is found.

ਇਕਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਭਾਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਫਿਰਾਇ ॥

eik hukam man na jaananee bhaaee doojai bhaae firaae |

Some do not know how to submit to the Hukam of His Command, O Siblings of Destiny; they wander around lost in the love of duality.

ਸੰਗਤਿ ਢੋਈ ਨਾ ਮਿਲੈ ਭਾਈ ਬੈਸਣਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਨ ਥਾਉ ॥

sangat dtoee naa milai bhaaee baisan milai na thaau |

They find no place of rest in the Sangat, O Siblings of Destiny; they find no place to sit.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਮਨਾਇਸੀ ਭਾਈ ਜਿਨਾ ਧੁਰੇ ਕਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਉ ॥

naanak hukam tinaa manaaeisee bhaaee jinaa dhure kamaaeaa naau |

Nanak: they alone submit to His Command, O Siblings of Destiny, who are pre-destined to live the Name.

ਤਿਨੑ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਹਉ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਭਾਈ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥੫੧॥

tina vittahu hau vaariaa bhaaee tin kau sad balihaarai jaau |51|

I am a sacrifice to them, O Siblings of Destiny, I am forever a sacrifice to them. ||51||

ਸੇ ਦਾੜੀਆਂ ਸਚੀਆ ਜਿ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨੀ ਲਗੰਨੑਿ ॥

se daarreean sacheea ji gur charanee lagana |

Those beards are true, which brush the feet of the True Guru.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਅਨਦਿ ਰਹੰਨੑਿ ॥

anadin sevan gur aapanaa anadin anad rahana |

Those who serve their Guru night and day, live in bliss, night and day.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਮੁਹ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਿ ਦਿਸੰਨੑਿ ॥੫੨॥

naanak se muh sohane sachai dar disana |52|

O Nanak, their faces appear beautiful in the Court of the True Lord. ||52||

ਮੁਖ ਸਚੇ ਸਚੁ ਦਾੜੀਆ ਸਚੁ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥

mukh sache sach daarreea sach boleh sach kamaeh |

True are the faces and true are the beards, of those who speak the Truth and live the Truth.

ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਾਂਹਿ ਸਮਾਂਹਿ ॥

sachaa sabad man vasiaa satigur maanhi samaanhi |

The True Word of the Shabad abides in their minds; they are absorbed in the True Guru.

ਸਚੀ ਰਾਸੀ ਸਚੁ ਧਨੁ ਉਤਮ ਪਦਵੀ ਪਾਂਹਿ ॥

sachee raasee sach dhan utam padavee paanhi |

True is their capital, and true is their wealth; they are blessed with the ultimate status.

ਸਚੁ ਸੁਣਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਲੈਨਿ ਸਚੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥

sach suneh sach man lain sachee kaar kamaeh |

They hear the Truth, they believe in the Truth; they act and work in the Truth.

ਸਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਣਾ ਸਚੇ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥

sachee daragah baisanaa sache maeh samaeh |

They are given a place in the Court of the True Lord; they are absorbed in the True Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭੂਲੇ ਜਾਂਹਿ ॥੫੩॥

naanak vin satigur sach na paaeeai manamukh bhoole jaanhi |53|

O Nanak, without the True Guru, the True Lord is not found. The self-willed manmukhs leave, wandering around lost. ||53||

ਬਾਬੀਹਾ ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਕਰੇ ਜਲਨਿਧਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

baabeehaa priau priau kare jalanidh prem piaar |

The rainbird cries, "Pri-o! Pri-o! Beloved! Beloved!" She is in love with the treasure, the water.

ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੀਤਲ ਜਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਭਿ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

gur mile seetal jal paaeaa sabh dookh nivaaranahaar |

Meeting with the Guru, the cooling, soothing water is obtained, and all pain is taken away.

ਤਿਸ ਚੁਕੈ ਸਹਜੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਚੁਕੈ ਕੂਕ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥

tis chukai sehaj aoopajai chukai kook pukaar |

My thirst has been quenched, and intuitive peace and poise have welled up; my cries and screams of anguish are past.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖਹੁ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੫੪॥

naanak guramukh saant hoe naam rakhahu ur dhaar |54|

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are peaceful and tranquil; they enshrine the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within their hearts. ||54||

ਬਾਬੀਹਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਚੁ ਚਉ ਸਚੇ ਸਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

baabeehaa toon sach chau sache sau liv laae |

O rainbird, chirp the True Name, and let yourself be attuned to the True Lord.

ਬੋਲਿਆ ਤੇਰਾ ਥਾਇ ਪਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਅਲਾਇ ॥

boliaa teraa thaae pavai guramukh hoe alaae |

Your word shall be accepted and approved, if you speak as Gurmukh.

ਸਬਦੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਤਿਖ ਉਤਰੈ ਮੰਨਿ ਲੈ ਰਜਾਇ ॥

sabad cheen tikh utarai man lai rajaae |

Remember the Shabad, and your thirst shall be relieved; surrender to the Will of the Lord.

ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਝੋਕਿ ਵਰਸਦਾ ਬੂੰਦ ਪਵੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

chaare kunddaa jhok varasadaa boond pavai sehaj subhaae |

The clouds are heavy, hanging low, and the rain is pouring down on all sides; the rain-drop is received, with natural ease.

ਜਲ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਊਪਜੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਪਿਆਸ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

jal hee te sabh aoopajai bin jal piaas na jaae |

From water, everything is produced; without water, thirst is not quenched.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਲੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਪੀਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਭੂਖ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਇ ॥੫੫॥

naanak har jal jin peea tis bhookh na laagai aae |55|

O Nanak, whoever drinks in the Water of the Lord, shall never feel hunger again. ||55||

ਬਾਬੀਹਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਹਜਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

baabeehaa toon sehaj bol sachai sabad subhaae |

O rainbird, speak the Shabad, the True Word of God, with natural peace and poise.

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਹੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਦਿਖਾਇ ॥

sabh kichh terai naal hai satigur deea dikhaae |

Everything is with you; the True Guru will show you this.

ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵੁਠਾ ਛਹਬਰ ਲਾਇ ॥

aap pachhaaneh preetam milai vutthaa chhahabar laae |

So understand your own self, and meet your Beloved; His Grace shall rain down in torrents.

ਝਿਮਿ ਝਿਮਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਵਰਸਦਾ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਸਭ ਜਾਇ ॥

jhim jhim amrit varasadaa tisanaa bhukh sabh jaae |

Drop by drop, the Ambrosial Nectar rains down softly and gently; thirst and hunger are completely gone.

ਕੂਕ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

kook pukaar na hovee jotee jot milaae |

Your cries and screams of anguish have ceased; your light shall merge into the Light.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖਿ ਸਵਨੑਿ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਸਚੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੫੬॥

naanak sukh savana sohaaganee sachai naam samaae |56|

O Nanak, the happy soul-brides sleep in peace; they are absorbed in the True Name. ||56||

ਧੁਰਹੁ ਖਸਮਿ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਸਚੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਪਠਾਇ ॥

dhurahu khasam bhejiaa sachai hukam patthaae |

The Primal Lord and Master has sent out the True Hukam of His Command.

ਇੰਦੁ ਵਰਸੈ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਗੂੜੑੀ ਛਹਬਰ ਲਾਇ ॥

eind varasai deaa kar goorraee chhahabar laae |

Indra mercifully sends forth the rain, which falls in torrents.

ਬਾਬੀਹੇ ਤਨਿ ਮਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਂ ਤਤੁ ਬੂੰਦ ਮੁਹਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

baabeehe tan man sukh hoe jaan tat boond muhi paae |

The body and mind of the rainbird are happy. only when the rain-drop falls into its mouth.

ਅਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਉਪਜੈ ਧਰਤੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਇ ॥

an dhan bahutaa upajai dharatee sobhaa paae |

The corn grows high, wealth increases, and the earth is embellished with beauty.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਲੋਕੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

anadin lok bhagat kare gur kai sabad samaae |

Night and day, people worship the Lord with devotion, and are absorbed in the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਆਪੇ ਸਚਾ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੈ ਰਜਾਇ ॥

aape sachaa bakhas le kar kirapaa karai rajaae |

The True Lord Himself forgives them, and showering them with His Mercy, He leads them to walk in His Will.

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਕਾਮਣੀ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

har gun gaavahu kaamanee sachai sabad samaae |

O brides, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and be absorbed in the True Word of His Shabad.

ਭੈ ਕਾ ਸਹਜੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਕਰਿਹੁ ਸਚਿ ਰਹਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

bhai kaa sehaj seegaar karihu sach rahahu liv laae |

Let the Fear of God be your decoration, and remain lovingly attuned to the True Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੋ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਲਏ ਛਡਾਇ ॥੫੭॥

naanak naamo man vasai har daragah le chhaddaae |57|

O Nanak, the Naam abides in the mind, and the mortal is saved in the Court of the Lord. ||57||

ਬਾਬੀਹਾ ਸਗਲੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਜੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਊਡਿ ਚੜਹਿ ਆਕਾਸਿ ॥

baabeehaa sagalee dharatee je fireh aoodd charreh aakaas |

The rainbird wanders all over the earth, soaring high through the skies.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਜਲੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਚੂਕੈ ਭੂਖ ਪਿਆਸ ॥

satigur miliai jal paaeeai chookai bhookh piaas |

But it obtains the drop of water, only when it meets the True Guru, and then, its hunger and thirst are relieved.

ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥

jeeo pindd sabh tis kaa sabh kichh tis kai paas |

Soul and body and all belong to Him; everything is His.

ਵਿਣੁ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕੀਚੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥

vin boliaa sabh kichh jaanadaa kis aagai keechai aradaas |

He knows everything, without being told; unto whom should we offer our prayers?

ਨਾਨਕ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਏਕੋ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਕਰੇ ਪਰਗਾਸ ॥੫੮॥

naanak ghatt ghatt eko varatadaa sabad kare paragaas |58|

O Nanak, the One Lord is prevading and permeating each and every heart; the Word of the Shabad brings illumination. ||58||

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੈ ਬਸੰਤੁ ਹੈ ਜਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

naanak tisai basant hai ji satigur sev samaae |

O Nanak, the season of spring comes to one who serves the True Guru.

ਹਰਿ ਵੁਠਾ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਪਰਫੜੈ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਹਰੀਆਵਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੫੯॥

har vutthaa man tan sabh parafarrai sabh jag hareeaaval hoe |59|

The Lord rains His Mercy down upon him, and his mind and body totally blossom forth; the entire world becomes green and rejuvenated. ||59||

ਸਬਦੇ ਸਦਾ ਬਸੰਤੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਤੁ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥

sabade sadaa basant hai jit tan man hariaa hoe |

The Word of the Shabad brings eternal spring; it rejuvenates the mind and body.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੬੦॥

naanak naam na veesarai jin siriaa sabh koe |60|

O Nanak, do not forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord, which has created everyone. ||60||

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨਾ ਬਸੰਤੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਇ ॥

naanak tinaa basant hai jinaa guramukh vasiaa man soe |

O Nanak, it is the spring season, for those Gurmukhs, within whose minds the Lord abides.

ਹਰਿ ਵੁਠੈ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਪਰਫੜੈ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਹਰਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੬੧॥

har vutthai man tan parafarrai sabh jag hariaa hoe |61|

When the Lord showers His Mercy, the mind and body blossom forth, and all the world turns green and lush. ||61||

ਵਡੜੈ ਝਾਲਿ ਝਲੁੰਭਲੈ ਨਾਵੜਾ ਲਈਐ ਕਿਸੁ ॥

vaddarrai jhaal jhalunbhalai naavarraa leeai kis |

In the early hours of the morning, whose name should we chant?

ਨਾਉ ਲਈਐ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੈ ਭੰਨਣ ਘੜਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ॥੬੨॥

naau leeai paramesarai bhanan gharran samarath |62|

Chant the Name of the Transcendent Lord, who is All-powerful to create and destroy. ||62||

ਹਰਹਟ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਭਲੀ ਬਾਣਿ ॥

harahatt bhee toon toon kareh boleh bhalee baan |

The Persian wheel also cries out, "Too! Too! You! You!", with sweet and sublime sounds.

ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਦਾ ਹਦੂਰਿ ਹੈ ਕਿਆ ਉਚੀ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥

saahib sadaa hadoor hai kiaa uchee kareh pukaar |

Our Lord and Master is always present; why do you cry out to Him in such a loud voice?

ਜਿਨਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਕੀਆ ਤਿਸੈ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥

jin jagat upaae har rang keea tisai vittahu kurabaan |

I am a sacrifice to that Lord who created the world, and who loves it.

ਆਪੁ ਛੋਡਹਿ ਤਾਂ ਸਹੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚਾ ਏਹੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

aap chhoddeh taan sahu milai sachaa ehu veechaar |

Give up your selfishness, and then you shall meet your Husband Lord. Consider this Truth.

ਹਉਮੈ ਫਿਕਾ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਬੁਝਿ ਨ ਸਕਾ ਕਾਰ ॥

haumai fikaa bolanaa bujh na sakaa kaar |

Speaking in shallow egotism, no one understands the Ways of God.

ਵਣੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਣੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਤੁਝੈ ਧਿਆਇਦਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਹਾਣ ॥

van trin tribhavan tujhai dhiaaeidaa anadin sadaa vihaan |

The forests and fields, and all the three worlds meditate on You, O Lord; this is the way they pass their days and nights forever.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਥਕੇ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥

bin satigur kinai na paaeaa kar kar thake veechaar |

Without the True Guru, no one finds the Lord. People have grown weary of thinking about it.

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾਂ ਆਪੇ ਲੈਹਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥

nadar kareh je aapanee taan aape laihi savaar |

But if the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, then He Himself embellishes us.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਆਏ ਸੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੬੩॥

naanak guramukh jinaee dhiaaeaa aae se paravaan |63|

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs meditate on the Lord; blessed and approved is their coming into the world. ||63||

ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਭਗਵੀ ਕਪੜੀ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਮੈਲੇ ਵੇਸਿ ॥

jog na bhagavee kaparree jog na maile ves |

Yoga is not obtained by wearing saffron robes; Yoga is not obtained by wearing dirty robes.

ਨਾਨਕ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਠਿਆ ਜੋਗੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਉਪਦੇਸਿ ॥੬੪॥

naanak ghar baitthiaa jog paaeeai satigur kai upades |64|

O Nanak, Yoga is obtained even while sitting in your own home, by following the Teachings of the True Guru. ||64||

ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਜੇ ਭਵਹਿ ਬੇਦ ਪੜਹਿ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰਿ ॥

chaare kunddaa je bhaveh bed parreh jug chaar |

You may wander in all four directions, and read the Vedas throughout the four ages.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਾ ਭੇਟੈ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰ ॥੬੫॥

naanak saachaa bhettai har man vasai paaveh mokh duaar |65|

O Nanak, if you meet with the True Guru, the Lord shall come to dwell within your mind, and you shall find the door of salvation. ||65||

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਮਤਿ ਭਵੀ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਚਲ ਚਿਤ ॥

naanak hukam varatai khasam kaa mat bhavee fireh chal chit |

O Nanak, the Hukam, the Command of your Lord and Master, is prevailing. The intellectually confused person wanders around lost, misled by his fickle consciousness.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸਉ ਕਰਿ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਸੁਖ ਕਿ ਪੁਛਹਿ ਮਿਤ ॥

manamukh sau kar dosatee sukh ki puchheh mit |

If you make friends with the self-willed manmukhs, O friend, who can you ask for peace?

ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸਉ ਕਰਿ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਉ ਲਾਇ ਚਿਤੁ ॥

guramukh sau kar dosatee satigur sau laae chit |

Make friends with the Gurmukhs, and focus your consciousness on the True Guru.

ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣ ਕਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਕਟੀਐ ਤਾਂ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੀ ਮਿਤ ॥੬੬॥

jaman maran kaa mool katteeai taan sukh hovee mit |66|

The root of birth and death will be cut away, and then, you shall find peace, O friend. ||66||

ਭੁਲਿਆਂ ਆਪਿ ਸਮਝਾਇਸੀ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥

bhuliaan aap samajhaaeisee jaa kau nadar kare |

The Lord Himself instructs those who are misguided, when He casts His Glance of Grace.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਬਾਹਰੀ ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਹ ਕਰੇ ॥੬੭॥

naanak nadaree baaharee karan palaah kare |67|

O Nanak, those who are not blessed by His Glance of Grace, cry and weep and wail. ||67||
