ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥

Maaroo, Fourth Mehl:

ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਸਦਾ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥

har agam agochar sadaa abinaasee |

The Lord is inaccessible and unfathomable; He is eternal and imperishable.

ਸਰਬੇ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਘਟ ਵਾਸੀ ॥

sarabe rav rahiaa ghatt vaasee |

He dwells in the heart, and is all-pervading, permeating everywhere.

ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਦਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਸਰੇਵਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹੇ ॥੧॥

tis bin avar na koee daataa har tiseh sarevahu praanee he |1|

There is no other Giver except Him; worship the Lord, O mortals. ||1||

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਰਾਖੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਣਹਾਰਾ ॥

jaa kau raakhai har raakhanahaaraa |

No one can kill anyone

ਤਾ ਕਉ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸਾਕਸਿ ਮਾਰਾ ॥

taa kau koe na saakas maaraa |

Who is saved by the Savior Lord.

ਸੋ ਐਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਊਤਮ ਬਾਣੀ ਹੇ ॥੨॥

so aisaa har sevahu santahu jaa kee aootam baanee he |2|

So serve such a Lord, O Saints, whose Bani is exalted and sublime. ||2||

ਜਾ ਜਾਪੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਿਥਾਊ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

jaa jaapai kichh kithaaoo naahee |

When it seems that a place is empty and void,

ਤਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥

taa karataa bharapoor samaahee |

there, the Creator Lord is permeating and pervading.

ਸੂਕੇ ਤੇ ਫੁਨਿ ਹਰਿਆ ਕੀਤੋਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ਹੇ ॥੩॥

sooke te fun hariaa keeton har dhiaavahu choj viddaanee he |3|

He causes the dried-up branch to blossom forth in greenery again; so meditate on the Lord - wondrous are His ways! ||3||

ਜੋ ਜੀਆ ਕੀ ਵੇਦਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

jo jeea kee vedan jaanai |

The One who knows the anguish of all beings

ਤਿਸੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੈ ਹਉ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੈ ॥

tis saahib kai hau kurabaanai |

unto that Lord and Master, I am a sacrifice.

ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਜਨ ਕਰਿ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਜੋ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਣੀ ਹੇ ॥੪॥

tis aagai jan kar benantee jo sarab sukhaa kaa daanee he |4|

Offer your prayers to the One who is the Giver of all peace and joy. ||4||

ਜੋ ਜੀਐ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

jo jeeai kee saar na jaanai |

But one who does not know the state of the soul

ਤਿਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਕਿਛੁ ਨ ਕਹੀਐ ਅਜਾਣੈ ॥

tis siau kichh na kaheeai ajaanai |

do not say anything to such an ignorant person.

ਮੂਰਖ ਸਿਉ ਨਹ ਲੂਝੁ ਪਰਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਪਦੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੀ ਹੇ ॥੫॥

moorakh siau neh loojh paraanee har japeeai pad nirabaanee he |5|

Do not argue with fools, O mortals. Meditate on the Lord, in the state of Nirvaanaa. ||5||

ਨਾ ਕਰਿ ਚਿੰਤ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਹੈ ਕਰਤੇ ॥

naa kar chint chintaa hai karate |

Don't worry - let the Creator take care of it.

ਹਰਿ ਦੇਵੈ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਜੰਤਾ ਸਭਤੈ ॥

har devai jal thal jantaa sabhatai |

The Lord gives to all creatures in the water and on the land.

ਅਚਿੰਤ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਥਰ ਕੀਟ ਪਖਾਣੀ ਹੇ ॥੬॥

achint daan dee prabh meraa vich paathar keett pakhaanee he |6|

My God bestows His blessings without being asked, even to worms in soil and stones. ||6||

ਨਾ ਕਰਿ ਆਸ ਮੀਤ ਸੁਤ ਭਾਈ ॥

naa kar aas meet sut bhaaee |

Do not place your hopes in friends, children and siblings.

ਨਾ ਕਰਿ ਆਸ ਕਿਸੈ ਸਾਹ ਬਿਉਹਾਰ ਕੀ ਪਰਾਈ ॥

naa kar aas kisai saah biauhaar kee paraaee |

Do not place your hopes in kings or the business of others.

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਬੇਲੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਸਾਰੰਗਪਾਣੀ ਹੇ ॥੭॥

bin har naavai ko belee naahee har japeeai saarangapaanee he |7|

Without the Lord's Name, no one will be your helper; so meditate on the Lord, the Lord of the world. ||7||

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ॥

anadin naam japahu banavaaree |

Night and day, chant the Naam.

ਸਭ ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਪੂਰੈ ਥਾਰੀ ॥

sabh aasaa manasaa poorai thaaree |

All your hopes and desires shall be fulfilled.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਭਵ ਖੰਡਨੁ ਸੁਖਿ ਸਹਜੇ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ਹੇ ॥੮॥

jan naanak naam japahu bhav khanddan sukh sahaje rain vihaanee he |8|

O servant Nanak, chant the Naam, the Name of the Destroyer of fear, and your life-night shall pass in intuitive peace and poise. ||8||

ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

jin har seviaa tin sukh paaeaa |

Those who serve the Lord find peace.

ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥

sahaje hee har naam samaaeaa |

They are intuitively absorbed in the Lord's Name.

ਜੋ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੈ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਜਾਇ ਪੂਛਹੁ ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਹੇ ॥੯॥

jo saran parai tis kee pat raakhai jaae poochhahu ved puraanee he |9|

The Lord preserves the honor of those who seek His Sanctuary; go and consult the Vedas and the Puraanas. ||9||

ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਲਾਗੈ ॥

jis har sevaa laae soee jan laagai |

That humble being is attached to the Lord's service, whom the Lord so attaches.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਰਮ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥

gur kai sabad bharam bhau bhaagai |

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, doubt and fear are dispelled.

ਵਿਚੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਜਿਉ ਕਮਲੁ ਰਹੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥

viche grih sadaa rahai udaasee jiau kamal rahai vich paanee he |10|

In his own home, he remains unattached, like the lotus flower in the water. ||10||

ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਸੇਵਾ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥

vich haumai sevaa thaae na paae |

One who serves in egotism is not accepted or approved.

ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਏ ॥

janam marai fir aavai jaae |

Such a person is born, only to die again, and come and go in reincarnation.

ਸੋ ਤਪੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਾਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥

so tap pooraa saaee sevaa jo har mere man bhaanee he |11|

Perfect is that penance and that service, which is pleasing to the Mind of my Lord. ||11||

ਹਉ ਕਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ਆਖਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥

hau kiaa gun tere aakhaa suaamee |

What Glorious Virtues of Yours should I chant, O my Lord and Master?

ਤੂ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥

too sarab jeea kaa antarajaamee |

You are the Inner-knower, the Searcher of all souls.

ਹਉ ਮਾਗਉ ਦਾਨੁ ਤੁਝੈ ਪਹਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥

hau maagau daan tujhai peh karate har anadin naam vakhaanee he |12|

I beg for blessings from You, O Creator Lord; I repeat Your Name night and day. ||12||

ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਜੋਰੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਬੋਲਣ ਕਾ ॥

kis hee jor ahankaar bolan kaa |

Some speak in egotistical power.

ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਜੋਰੁ ਦੀਬਾਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ॥

kis hee jor deebaan maaeaa kaa |

Some have the power of authority and Maya.

ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਟੇਕ ਧਰ ਅਵਰ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਤੂ ਕਰਤੇ ਰਾਖੁ ਮੈ ਨਿਮਾਣੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥

mai har bin ttek dhar avar na kaaee too karate raakh mai nimaanee he |13|

I have no other Support at all, except the Lord. O Creator Lord, please save me, meek and dishonored. ||13||

ਨਿਮਾਣੇ ਮਾਣੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

nimaane maan kareh tudh bhaavai |

You bless the meek and dishonored with honor, as it pleases You, O Lord.

ਹੋਰ ਕੇਤੀ ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ॥

hor ketee jhakh jhakh aavai jaavai |

Many others argue in conflict, coming and going in reincarnation.

ਜਿਨ ਕਾ ਪਖੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਊਪਰਿ ਗਲ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਣੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥

jin kaa pakh kareh too suaamee tin kee aoopar gal tudh aanee he |14|

Those people, whose side You take, O Lord and Master, are elevated and successful. ||14||

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥

har har naam jinee sadaa dhiaaeaa |

Those who meditate forever on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har,

ਤਿਨੀ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

tinee gur parasaad param pad paaeaa |

by Guru's Grace, obtain the supreme status.

ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਪਛੋਤਾਣੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥

jin har seviaa tin sukh paaeaa bin sevaa pachhotaanee he |15|

Those who serve the Lord find peace; without serving Him, they regret and repent. ||15||

ਤੂ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਗੰਨਾਥੁ ॥

too sabh meh varateh har jaganaath |

You are pervading all, O Lord of the world.

ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹਾਥੁ ॥

so har japai jis gur masatak haath |

He alone meditates on the Lord, upon whose forehead the Guru places His hand.

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪੀ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਦਾਸੁ ਦਸਾਣੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੨॥

har kee saran peaa har jaapee jan naanak daas dasaanee he |16|2|

Entering the Sanctuary of the Lord, I meditate on the Lord; servant Nanak is the slave of His slaves. ||16||2||
