Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਜਿਨੑੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥
jinaee naam visaariaa doojai bharam bhulaaee |
Those who have forgotten the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are deluded by doubt and duality.
ਮੂਲੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਡਾਲੀ ਲਗੇ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਛਾਈ ॥੧॥
mool chhodd ddaalee lage kiaa paaveh chhaaee |1|
Those who abandon the roots and cling to the branches, shall obtain only ashes. ||1||
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਜੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
bin naavai kiau chhootteeai je jaanai koee |
Without the Name, how can one be emancipated? Who knows this?
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
guramukh hoe ta chhootteeai manamukh pat khoee |1| rahaau |
One who becomes Gurmukh is emancipated; the self-willed manmukhs lose their honor. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਨੑੀ ਏਕੋ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਭਾਈ ॥
jinaee eko seviaa pooree mat bhaaee |
Those who serve the One Lord become perfect in their understanding, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਾ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੨॥
aad jugaad niranjanaa jan har saranaaee |2|
The Lord's humble servant finds Sanctuary in Him, the Immaculate One, from the very beginning, and throughout the ages. ||2||
ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਈ ॥
saahib meraa ek hai avar nahee bhaaee |
My Lord and Master is the One; there is no other, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਾਚੇ ਪਰਥਾਈ ॥੩॥
kirapaa te sukh paaeaa saache parathaaee |3|
By the Grace of the True Lord, celestial peace is obtained. ||3||
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਕੇਤੀ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥
gur bin kinai na paaeo ketee kahai kahaae |
Without the Guru, no one has obtained Him, although many may claim to have done so.
ਆਪਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਵਾਟੜੀਂ ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥੪॥
aap dikhaavai vaattarreen sachee bhagat drirraae |4|
He Himself reveals the Way, and implants true devotion within. ||4||
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਜੇ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਭੀ ਉਝੜਿ ਜਾਏ ॥
manamukh je samajhaaeeai bhee ujharr jaae |
Even if the self-willed manmukh is instructed, he stills goes into the wilderness.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨ ਛੂਟਸੀ ਮਰਿ ਨਰਕ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੫॥
bin har naam na chhoottasee mar narak samaae |5|
Without the Lord's Name, he shall not be emancipated; he shall die, and sink into hell. ||5||
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਭਰਮਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਲੇਵੈ ॥
janam marai bharamaaeeai har naam na levai |
He wanders through birth and death, and never chants the Lord's Name.
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵੈ ॥੬॥
taa kee keemat naa pavai bin gur kee sevai |6|
He never realizes his own value, without serving the Guru. ||6||
ਜੇਹੀ ਸੇਵ ਕਰਾਈਐ ਕਰਣੀ ਭੀ ਸਾਈ ॥
jehee sev karaaeeai karanee bhee saaee |
Whatever service the Lord causes us to do, that is just what we do.
ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਵੇਖੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੭॥
aap kare kis aakheeai vekhai vaddiaaee |7|
He Himself acts; who else should be mentioned? He beholds His own greatness. ||7||
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
gur kee sevaa so kare jis aap karaae |
He alone serves the Guru, whom the Lord Himself inspires to do so.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੇ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੮॥੧੮॥
naanak sir de chhootteeai daragah pat paae |8|18|
O Nanak, offering his head, one is emancipated, and honored in the Court of the Lord. ||8||18||
