ਪਉੜੀ ੨੧

ਗੁੰਗਾ ਗਾਵਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਬੋਲਾ ਸੁਣੈ ਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਆਣੈ ।

gungaa gaav na jaanee bolaa sunai na andar aanai |

The dumb person cannot sing and the deaf cannot hear so that nothing enters their understanding.

ਅੰਨ੍ਹੈ ਦਿਸਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਰਾਤਿ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰੀ ਘਰੁ ਨ ਸਿਾਣੈ ।

anhai dis na aavee raat anheree ghar na siaanai |

The blind cannot see and in the dark and he cannot identify the house (he lives in).

ਚਲਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਪਿੰਗੁਲਾ ਲੂਲ੍ਹਾ ਗਲਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ।

chal na sakai pingulaa loolhaa gal mil het na jaanai |

A cripple cannot keep pace and a handicapped cannot embrace to show his love.

ਸੰਢਿ ਸਪੁਤੀ ਨ ਥੀਐ ਖੁਸਰੇ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਰਲੀਆਂ ਮਾਣੈ ।

sandt saputee na theeai khusare naal na raleean maanai |

A barren woman cannot have a son, nor can she enjoy coition with a eunuch.

ਜਣਿ ਜਣਿ ਪੁਤਾਂ ਮਾਈਆਂ ਲਾਡਲੇ ਨਾਂਵ ਧਰੇਨਿ ਧਿਙਾਣੈ ।

jan jan putaan maaeean laaddale naanv dharen dhingaanai |

The mothers giving births to their sons give them pet names lovingly (but mere good names cannot make a good man).

ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਿਣੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਜੋਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਟਟਾਣੈ ।

gurasikhee satiguroo vin sooraj jot na hoe ttattaanai |

Sikh life without the true Guru is impossible as a glow worm cannot enlighten the sun.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ।੨੧।

saadhasangat gur sabad vakhaanai |21|

In the holy congretation the word of the Guru is explained (and the jiv cultivates understanding).
