ਬਨਿਯੋ ਗ੍ਵਾਰਿਏਰ ਕੇ ਮਾਹੀ ॥

baniyo gvaarier ke maahee |

ਘਰ ਧਨ ਬਹੁ ਖਰਚਤ ਕਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

ghar dhan bahu kharachat kachh naahee |

A Shah used to live in Gwalior and he had lot of wealth in his house.

ਤਾ ਕੋ ਘਰ ਤਸਕਰ ਇਕ ਆਯੋ ॥

taa ko ghar tasakar ik aayo |

ਤਿਨ ਸਾਹੁਨਿ ਸੋ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥੧॥

tin saahun so bachan sunaayo |1|

Once, when a thief came to his house and he discussed with his wife.(1)

ਬਨਿਕ ਬੋਲਿ ਸਾਹੁਨਿ ਸੋ ਭਾਖ︀ਯੋ ॥

banik bol saahun so bhaakhayo |

ਰਾਮ ਹਮੈ ਨਿਪੂਤ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖ︀ਯੋ ॥

raam hamai nipoot kar raakhayo |

The Shah told his wife, ‘God has not bestowed us with a son.

ਧਨ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਮ ਕਾਮ ਕਿਹ ਆਵੈ ॥

dhan bahu dhaam kaam kih aavai |

ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੁਰ ਬੰਸ ਲਜਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

putr binaa mur bans lajaavai |2|

‘What use is all this in our house without a son. Without progeny I feel ashamed of myself.(2)
