ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

aasaa mahalaa 3 |

Aasaa, Third Mehl:

ਲਾਲੈ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥

laalai aapanee jaat gavaaee |

The Lord's slave sets aside his own social status.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਰਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥

tan man arape satigur saranaaee |

He dedicates his mind and body to the True Guru, and seeks His Sanctuary.

ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

hiradai naam vaddee vaddiaaee |

His greatest greatness is that the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is in his heart.

ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹੋਇ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੧॥

sadaa preetam prabh hoe sakhaaee |1|

The Beloved Lord God is his constant companion. ||1||

ਸੋ ਲਾਲਾ ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ॥

so laalaa jeevat marai |

He alone is the Lord's slave, who remains dead while yet alive.

ਸੋਗੁ ਹਰਖੁ ਦੁਇ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਉਧਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

sog harakh due sam kar jaanai gur parasaadee sabad udharai |1| rahaau |

He looks upon pleasure and pain alike; by Guru's Grace, he is saved through the Word of the Shabad. ||1||Pause||

ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਰ ਧੁਰਹੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਈ ॥

karanee kaar dhurahu furamaaee |

He does his deeds according to the Lord's Primal Command.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਕੋ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

bin sabadai ko thaae na paaee |

Without the Shabad, no one is approved.

ਕਰਣੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਈ ॥

karanee keerat naam vasaaee |

Singing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises, the Naam abides within the mind.

ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥

aape devai dtil na paaee |2|

He Himself gives His gifts, without hesitation. ||2||

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

manamukh bharam bhulai sansaar |

The self-willed manmukh wanders around the world in doubt.

ਬਿਨੁ ਰਾਸੀ ਕੂੜਾ ਕਰੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥

bin raasee koorraa kare vaapaar |

Without any capital, he makes false transactions.

ਵਿਣੁ ਰਾਸੀ ਵਖਰੁ ਪਲੈ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

vin raasee vakhar palai na paae |

Without any capital, he does not obtain any merchandise.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭੁਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੩॥

manamukh bhulaa janam gavaae |3|

The mistaken manmukh wastes away his life. ||3||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੁ ਲਾਲਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

satigur seve su laalaa hoe |

One who serves the True Guru is the Lord's slave.

ਊਤਮ ਜਾਤੀ ਊਤਮੁ ਸੋਇ ॥

aootam jaatee aootam soe |

His social status is exalted, and his reputation is exalted.

ਗੁਰ ਪਉੜੀ ਸਭ ਦੂ ਊਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

gur paurree sabh doo aoochaa hoe |

Climbing the Guru's Ladder, he becomes the most exalted of all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੭॥੪੬॥

naanak naam vaddaaee hoe |4|7|46|

O Nanak, through the Naam, the Name of the Lord, greatness is obtained. ||4||7||46||
