ਚਿਤ੍ਰਵਤੀ ਨਗਰੀ ਬਿਖੈ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਏਕ ॥

chitravatee nagaree bikhai chitr singh nrip ek |

There lived in the city of Chitervati, a Raja called Chitar Singh.

ਤੇ ਕੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਘਨੀ ਰਥ ਗਜ ਬਾਜ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੧॥

te ke grih sanpat ghanee rath gaj baaj anek |1|

He enjoyed abundance of wealth, and possessed numerous material goods, chariots, elephants and horses.(1)

ਤਾ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੂਪ ਅਤਿ ਜੋ ਬਿਧਿ ਧਰਿਯੋ ਸੁਧਾਰਿ ॥

taa ko roop anoop at jo bidh dhariyo sudhaar |

He had been bestowed with beautiful physical features

ਸੁਰੀ ਆਸੁਰੀ ਕਿੰਨ੍ਰਨੀ ਰੀਝਿ ਰਹਤ ਪੁਰ ਨਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

suree aasuree kinranee reejh rehat pur naar |2|

The consorts of the gods and demons, the female Sphinxes and the town fairies, were all enchanted.(2)

ਏਕ ਅਪਸਰਾ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਕੇ ਜਾਤ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਬਨਾਇ ॥

ek apasaraa indr ke jaat singaar banaae |

A fairy, bedecking herself, was ready to go to Indra, the Celestial Raja of the Rajas,

ਨਿਰਖ ਰਾਇ ਅਟਕਤਿ ਭਈ ਕੰਜ ਭਵਰ ਕੇ ਭਾਇ ॥੩॥

nirakh raae attakat bhee kanj bhavar ke bhaae |3|

But she stymied on the vision of that Raja, like a butterfly on the sight of a flower.(3)
