Gauree, Fifth Mehl:

ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ ਗਰਭ ਵਾਸ ਤੇ ਟਰਿਆ ॥

prathame garabh vaas te ttariaa |

First, they come forth from the womb.

ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੁਰਿਆ ॥

putr kalatr kuttanb sang juriaa |

They become attached to their children, spouses and families.

ਭੋਜਨੁ ਅਨਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਬਹੁ ਕਪਰੇ ॥

bhojan anik prakaar bahu kapare |

The foods of various sorts and appearances,

ਸਰਪਰ ਗਵਨੁ ਕਰਹਿਗੇ ਬਪੁਰੇ ॥੧॥

sarapar gavan karahige bapure |1|

will surely pass away, O wretched mortal! ||1||

ਕਵਨੁ ਅਸਥਾਨੁ ਜੋ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਟਰੈ ॥

kavan asathaan jo kabahu na ttarai |

What is that place which never perishes?

ਕਵਨੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

kavan sabad jit duramat harai |1| rahaau |

What is that Word by which the dirt of the mind is removed? ||1||Pause||

ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਪੁਰੀ ਮਹਿ ਸਰਪਰ ਮਰਣਾ ॥

eindr puree meh sarapar maranaa |

In the Realm of Indra, death is sure and certain.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪੁਰੀ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਰਹਣਾ ॥

braham puree nihachal nahee rahanaa |

The Realm of Brahma shall not remain permanent.

ਸਿਵ ਪੁਰੀ ਕਾ ਹੋਇਗਾ ਕਾਲਾ ॥

siv puree kaa hoeigaa kaalaa |

The Realm of Shiva shall also perish.

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਬਿਤਾਲਾ ॥੨॥

trai gun maaeaa binas bitaalaa |2|

The three dispositions, Maya and the demons shall vanish. ||2||

ਗਿਰਿ ਤਰ ਧਰਣਿ ਗਗਨ ਅਰੁ ਤਾਰੇ ॥

gir tar dharan gagan ar taare |

The mountains, the trees, the earth, the sky and the stars;

ਰਵਿ ਸਸਿ ਪਵਣੁ ਪਾਵਕੁ ਨੀਰਾਰੇ ॥

rav sas pavan paavak neeraare |

the sun, the moon, the wind, water and fire;

ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਬਰਤ ਅਰੁ ਭੇਦਾ ॥

dinas rain barat ar bhedaa |

day and night, fasting days and their determination;

ਸਾਸਤ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਬਿਨਸਹਿਗੇ ਬੇਦਾ ॥੩॥

saasat sinmrit binasahige bedaa |3|

the Shaastras, the Simritees and the Vedas shall pass away. ||3||

ਤੀਰਥ ਦੇਵ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਪੋਥੀ ॥

teerath dev dehuraa pothee |

The sacred shrines of pilgrimage, gods, temples and holy books;

ਮਾਲਾ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਸੋਚ ਪਾਕ ਹੋਤੀ ॥

maalaa tilak soch paak hotee |

rosaries, ceremonial tilak marks on the forehead, meditative people, the pure, and the performers of burnt offerings;

ਧੋਤੀ ਡੰਡਉਤਿ ਪਰਸਾਦਨ ਭੋਗਾ ॥

dhotee ddanddaut parasaadan bhogaa |

wearing loin cloths, bowing in reverence and the enjoyment of sacred foods

ਗਵਨੁ ਕਰੈਗੋ ਸਗਲੋ ਲੋਗਾ ॥੪॥

gavan karaigo sagalo logaa |4|

- all these, and all people, shall pass away. ||4||

ਜਾਤਿ ਵਰਨ ਤੁਰਕ ਅਰੁ ਹਿੰਦੂ ॥

jaat varan turak ar hindoo |

Social classes, races, Muslims and Hindus;

ਪਸੁ ਪੰਖੀ ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨਿ ਜਿੰਦੂ ॥

pas pankhee anik jon jindoo |

beasts, birds and the many varieties of beings and creatures;

ਸਗਲ ਪਾਸਾਰੁ ਦੀਸੈ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥

sagal paasaar deesai paasaaraa |

the entire world and the visible universe

ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇਗੋ ਸਗਲ ਆਕਾਰਾ ॥੫॥

binas jaaeigo sagal aakaaraa |5|

- all forms of existence shall pass away. ||5||

ਸਹਜ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨਾ ॥

sehaj sifat bhagat tat giaanaa |

Through the Praises of the Lord, devotional worship, spiritual wisdom and the essence of reality,

ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਥਾਨਾ ॥

sadaa anand nihachal sach thaanaa |

eternal bliss and the imperishable true place are obtained.

ਤਹਾ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਗੁਣ ਰਸੈ ॥

tahaa sangat saadh gun rasai |

There, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the Lord's Glorious Praises are sung with love.

ਅਨਭਉ ਨਗਰੁ ਤਹਾ ਸਦ ਵਸੈ ॥੬॥

anbhau nagar tahaa sad vasai |6|

There, in the city of fearlessness, He dwells forever. ||6||

ਤਹ ਭਉ ਭਰਮਾ ਸੋਗੁ ਨ ਚਿੰਤਾ ॥

teh bhau bharamaa sog na chintaa |

There is no fear, doubt, suffering or anxiety there;

ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਵਣੁ ਮਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਹੋਤਾ ॥

aavan jaavan mirat na hotaa |

there is no coming or going, and no death there.

ਤਹ ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਅਨਹਤ ਆਖਾਰੇ ॥

teh sadaa anand anahat aakhaare |

There is eternal bliss, and the unstruck celestial music there.

ਭਗਤ ਵਸਹਿ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਆਧਾਰੇ ॥੭॥

bhagat vaseh keeratan aadhaare |7|

The devotees dwell there, with the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises as their support. ||7||

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰੁ ॥

paarabraham kaa ant na paar |

There is no end or limitation to the Supreme Lord God.

ਕਉਣੁ ਕਰੈ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

kaun karai taa kaa beechaar |

Who can embrace His contemplation?

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੈ ॥

kahu naanak jis kirapaa karai |

Says Nanak, when the Lord showers His Mercy,

ਨਿਹਚਲ ਥਾਨੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਤਰੈ ॥੮॥੪॥

nihachal thaan saadhasang tarai |8|4|

the imperishable home is obtained; in the Saadh Sangat, you shall be saved. ||8||4||
