Salok, First Mehl:

ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੜੑੰਤਾ ॥

saasatr bed puraan parrantaa |

Some read the Shaastras, the Vedas and the Puraanas.

ਪੂਕਾਰੰਤਾ ਅਜਾਣੰਤਾ ॥

pookaarantaa ajaanantaa |

They recite them, out of ignorance.

ਜਾਂ ਬੂਝੈ ਤਾਂ ਸੂਝੈ ਸੋਈ ॥

jaan boojhai taan soojhai soee |

If they really understood them, they would realize the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਕੂਕ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥

naanak aakhai kook na hoee |1|

Nanak says, there is no need to shout so loud. ||1||
