Raamkalee, First Mehl:

ਜਿਉ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਉ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਬਉਰੇ ਜਿਉ ਜਨਮੇ ਤਿਉ ਮਰਣੁ ਭਇਆ ॥

jiau aaeaa tiau jaaveh baure jiau janame tiau maran bheaa |

As you come, so will you leave, you fool; as you were born, so will you die.

ਜਿਉ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ਕੀਏ ਤੇਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਭਵਜਲਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੧॥

jiau ras bhog kee tetaa dukh laagai naam visaar bhavajal peaa |1|

As you enjoy pleasures, so will you suffer pain. Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, you will fall into the terrifying world-ocean. ||1||

ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਦੇਖਤ ਗਰਬਿ ਗਇਆ ॥

tan dhan dekhat garab geaa |

Gazing upon your body and wealth, you are so proud.

ਕਨਿਕ ਕਾਮਨੀ ਸਿਉ ਹੇਤੁ ਵਧਾਇਹਿ ਕੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਹਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਗਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

kanik kaamanee siau het vadhaaeihi kee naam visaareh bharam geaa |1| rahaau |

Your love for gold and sexual pleasures increases; why have you forgotten the Naam, and why do you wander in doubt? ||1||Pause||

ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸੀਲੁ ਨ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਪਿੰਜਰ ਮਹਿ ਕਾਸਟੁ ਭਇਆ ॥

jat sat sanjam seel na raakhiaa pret pinjar meh kaasatt bheaa |

You do not practice truth, abstinence, self-discipline or humility; the ghost within your skeleton has turned to dry wood.

ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਨ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਾਦਿ ਜਇਆ ॥੨॥

pun daan isanaan na sanjam saadhasangat bin baad jeaa |2|

You have not practiced charity, donations, cleansing baths or austerities. Without the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, your life has gone in vain. ||2||

ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਓ ਆਵਤ ਜਾਵਤ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਇਆ ॥

laalach laagai naam bisaario aavat jaavat janam geaa |

Attached to greed, you have forgotten the Naam. Coming and going, your life has been ruined.

ਜਾ ਜਮੁ ਧਾਇ ਕੇਸ ਗਹਿ ਮਾਰੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਲ ਗਇਆ ॥੩॥

jaa jam dhaae kes geh maarai surat nahee mukh kaal geaa |3|

When the Messenger of Death grabs you by your hair, you will be punished. You are unconscious, and have fallen into Death's mouth. ||3||

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਾਤਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਸਰਬ ਦਇਆ ॥

ahinis nindaa taat paraaee hiradai naam na sarab deaa |

Day and night, you jealously slander others; in your heart, you have neither the Naam, nor compassion for all.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦ ਨ ਗਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਰਕਿ ਗਇਆ ॥੪॥

bin gurasabad na gat pat paaveh raam naam bin narak geaa |4|

Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, you will not find salvation or honor. Without the Lord's Name, you shall go to hell. ||4||

ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਵੇਸ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਟੂਆ ਜਿਉ ਮੋਹ ਪਾਪ ਮਹਿ ਗਲਤੁ ਗਇਆ ॥

khin meh ves kareh nattooaa jiau moh paap meh galat geaa |

In an instant, you change into various costumes, like a juggler; you are entangled in emotional attachment and sin.

ਇਤ ਉਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਸਾਰੀ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਮਗਨੁ ਭਇਆ ॥੫॥

eit ut maaeaa dekh pasaaree moh maaeaa kai magan bheaa |5|

You gaze here and there upon the expanse of Maya; you are intoxicated with attachment to Maya. ||5||

ਕਰਹਿ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਵਿਥਾਰ ਘਨੇਰੇ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਪਇਆ ॥

kareh bikaar vithaar ghanere surat sabad bin bharam peaa |

You act in corruption, and put on ostentatious shows, but without awareness of the Shabad, you have fallen into confusion.

ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਰੋਗੁ ਗਇਆ ॥੬॥

haumai rog mahaa dukh laagaa guramat levahu rog geaa |6|

You suffer great pain from the disease of egotism. Following the Guru's Teachings, you shall be rid of this disease. ||6||

ਸੁਖ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਕਉ ਆਵਤ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਾਕਤ ਮਨਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਭਇਆ ॥

sukh sanpat kau aavat dekhai saakat man abhimaan bheaa |

Seeing peace and wealth come to him, the faithless cynic become proud in his mind.

ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੋ ਫਿਰਿ ਲੇਵੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਪਇਆ ॥੭॥

jis kaa ihu tan dhan so fir levai antar sahasaa dookh peaa |7|

But He who owns this body and wealth, takes them back again, and then the mortal feels anxiety and pain deep within. ||7||

ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਮਇਆ ॥

ant kaal kichh saath na chaalai jo deesai sabh tiseh meaa |

At the very last instant, nothing goes along with you; all is visible only by His Mercy.

ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਲੈ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੮॥

aad purakh aparanpar so prabh har naam ridai lai paar peaa |8|

God is our Primal and Infinite Lord; enshrining the Lord's Name in the heart, one crosses over. ||8||

ਮੂਏ ਕਉ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਕਿਸਹਿ ਸੁਣਾਵਹਿ ਭੈ ਸਾਗਰ ਅਸਰਾਲਿ ਪਇਆ ॥

mooe kau roveh kiseh sunaaveh bhai saagar asaraal peaa |

You weep for the dead, but who hears you weeping? The dead have fallen to the serpent in the terrifying world-ocean.

ਦੇਖਿ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਜੰਜਾਲਿ ਪਰਾਲਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੯॥

dekh kuttanb maaeaa grih mandar saakat janjaal paraal peaa |9|

Gazing upon his family, wealth, household and mansions, the faithless cynic is entangled in worthless worldly affairs. ||9||

ਜਾ ਆਏ ਤਾ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਪਠਾਏ ਚਾਲੇ ਤਿਨੈ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਲਇਆ ॥

jaa aae taa tineh patthaae chaale tinai bulaae leaa |

He comes when the Lord sends him; when the Lord calls him back, he goes.

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੋ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਬਖਸਣਹਾਰੈ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਇਆ ॥੧੦॥

jo kichh karanaa so kar rahiaa bakhasanahaarai bakhas leaa |10|

Whatever he does, the Lord is doing. The Forgiving Lord forgives him. ||10||

ਜਿਨਿ ਏਹੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਖੋਜੁ ਭਇਆ ॥

jin ehu chaakhiaa raam rasaaein tin kee sangat khoj bheaa |

I seek to be with those who have tasted this sublime essence of the Lord.

ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੧੧॥

ridh sidh budh giaan guroo te paaeaa mukat padaarath saran peaa |11|

Wealth, miraculous spiritual powers, wisdom and spiritual knowledge, are obtained from the Guru. The treasure of liberation is obtained in His Sanctuary. ||11||

ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣਾ ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਤੇ ਬਿਰਕਤੁ ਭਇਆ ॥

dukh sukh guramukh sam kar jaanaa harakh sog te birakat bheaa |

The Gurmukh looks upon pain and pleasure as one and the same; he remains untouched by joy and sorrow.

ਆਪੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਇ ਲਇਆ ॥੧੨॥੭॥

aap maar guramukh har paae naanak sehaj samaae leaa |12|7|

Conquering his self-conceit, the Gurmukh finds the Lord; O Nanak, he intuitively merges into the Lord. ||12||7||
