Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਰਹਣਾ ਨਹੀ ਧੁਰਿ ਫਾਟੇ ਚੀਰੈ ॥
hukam bheaa rahanaa nahee dhur faatte cheerai |
The Order is issued, and he cannot remain; the permit to stay has been torn up.
ਏਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਵਗਣਿ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਸਹੁ ਦੇਹ ਸਰੀਰੈ ॥
ehu man avagan baadhiaa sahu deh sareerai |
This mind is tied to its faults; it suffers terrible pain in its body.
ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਬਖਸਾਈਅਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਗੁਨਹ ਫਕੀਰੈ ॥੧॥
poorai gur bakhasaaeeeh sabh gunah fakeerai |1|
The Perfect Guru forgives all the mistakes of the beggar at His Door. ||1||
ਕਿਉ ਰਹੀਐ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਬੁਝੁ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
kiau raheeai utth chalanaa bujh sabad beechaaraa |
How can he stay here? He must get up and depart. Contemplate the Word of the Shabad, and understand this.
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਸੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jis too meleh so milai dhur hukam apaaraa |1| rahaau |
He alone is united, whom You, O Lord, unite. Such is the Primal Command of the Infinite Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਉ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਰਹਾ ਜੋ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੁ ਖਾਉ ॥
jiau too raakheh tiau rahaa jo dehi su khaau |
As You keep me, I remain; whatever You give me, I eat.
ਜਿਉ ਤੂ ਚਲਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਚਲਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਉ ॥
jiau too chalaaveh tiau chalaa mukh amrit naau |
As You lead me, I follow, with the Ambrosial Name in my mouth.
ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ॥੨॥
mere tthaakur hath vaddiaaeea meleh man chaau |2|
All glorious greatness rests in the hands of my Lord and Master; my mind yearns to unite with You. ||2||
ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਸੋਈ ॥
keetaa kiaa saalaaheeai kar dekhai soee |
Why should anyone praise any other created being? That Lord acts and sees.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
jin keea so man vasai mai avar na koee |
The One who created me, abides within my mind; there is no other at all.
ਸੋ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਸਾਚੀ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੩॥
so saachaa saalaaheeai saachee pat hoee |3|
So praise that True Lord, and you shall be blessed with true honor. ||3||
ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਪੜਿ ਨ ਪਹੁਚਈ ਬਹੁ ਆਲ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥
panddit parr na pahuchee bahu aal janjaalaa |
The Pandit, the religious scholar, reads, but does not reach the Lord; he is totally entangled in worldly affairs.
ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਦੁਇ ਸੰਗਮੇ ਖੁਧਿਆ ਜਮਕਾਲਾ ॥
paap pun due sangame khudhiaa jamakaalaa |
He keeps the company of both virtue and vice, tormented by hunger and the Messenger of Death.
ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਭਉ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਪੂਰਾ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥੪॥
vichhorraa bhau veesarai pooraa rakhavaalaa |4|
One who is protected by the Perfect Lord, forgets separation and fear. ||4||
ਜਿਨ ਕੀ ਲੇਖੈ ਪਤਿ ਪਵੈ ਸੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
jin kee lekhai pat pavai se poore bhaaee |
They alone are perfect, O Siblings of Destiny, whose honor is certified.
ਪੂਰੇ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
poore pooree mat hai sachee vaddiaaee |
Perfect is the intellect of the Perfect Lord. True is His glorious greatness.
ਦੇਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਥਕਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੫॥
dede tott na aavee lai lai thak paaee |5|
His gifts never run short, although those who receive may grow weary of receiving. ||5||
ਖਾਰ ਸਮੁਦ੍ਰੁ ਢੰਢੋਲੀਐ ਇਕੁ ਮਣੀਆ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
khaar samudru dtandtoleeai ik maneea paavai |
Searching the salty sea, one finds the pearl.
ਦੁਇ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਾ ਮਾਟੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਖਾਵੈ ॥
due din chaar suhaavanaa maattee tis khaavai |
It looks beautiful for a few days, but in the end, it is eaten away by dust.
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਸਤਿ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੬॥
gur saagar sat seveeai de tott na aavai |6|
If one serves the Guru, the ocean of Truth, the gifts one receives never run short. ||6||
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਊਜਲੇ ਸਭ ਮੈਲੁ ਭਰੀਜੈ ॥
mere prabh bhaavan se aoojale sabh mail bhareejai |
They alone are pure, who are pleasing to my God; all others are soiled with filth.
ਮੈਲਾ ਊਜਲੁ ਤਾ ਥੀਐ ਪਾਰਸ ਸੰਗਿ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
mailaa aoojal taa theeai paaras sang bheejai |
The filthy become pure, when they meet with the Guru, the Philosopher's Stone.
ਵੰਨੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਲਾਲ ਕੀ ਕਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੭॥
vanee saache laal kee kin keemat keejai |7|
Who can estimate the value of the color of the true jewel? ||7||
ਭੇਖੀ ਹਾਥ ਨ ਲਭਈ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਹੀ ਦਾਨੇ ॥
bhekhee haath na labhee teerath nahee daane |
Wearing religious robes, the Lord is not obtained, nor is He obtained by giving donations at sacred shrines of pilgrimage.
ਪੂਛਉ ਬੇਦ ਪੜੰਤਿਆ ਮੂਠੀ ਵਿਣੁ ਮਾਨੇ ॥
poochhau bed parrantiaa mootthee vin maane |
Go and ask the readers of the Vedas; without faith, the world is cheated.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਗਿਆਨੇ ॥੮॥੬॥
naanak keemat so kare pooraa gur giaane |8|6|
O Nanak, he alone values the jewel, who is blessed with the spiritual wisdom of the Perfect Guru. ||8||6||
