SWAYYA
ਯੌ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਬਤੀਯਾ ਤਿਹ ਕੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੋਪ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਹਮ ਜੁਧ ਕਰੈਂਗੇ ॥
yau sun kai bateeyaa tih kee har kop kahiyo ham judh karainge |
ਬਾਨ ਕਮਾਨ ਗਦਾ ਗਹਿ ਕੈ ਦੋਊ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਸਬੈ ਅਰਿ ਸੈਨ ਹਰੈਂਗੇ ॥
baan kamaan gadaa geh kai doaoo bhraat sabai ar sain harainge |
Hearing these words, Krishna in great ire, challenged them for war and said, “We, both brothers, taking up our bows and arrows, shall destroy all your army
ਸੂਰ ਸਿਵਾਦਿਕ ਤੇ ਨ ਭਜੈ ਹਨਿ ਹੈ ਤੁਮ ਕਉ ਨਹਿ ਜੂਝਿ ਮਰੈਂਗੇ ॥
soor sivaadik te na bhajai han hai tum kau neh joojh marainge |
“We have not been frightened even by Surya and Shive, therefore, we shall kill all of you and sacrifice ourselves
ਮੇਰੁ ਹਲੈ ਸੁਖਿ ਹੈ ਨਿਧਿ ਬਾਰਿ ਤਊ ਰਨ ਕੀ ਛਿਤਿ ਤੇ ਨ ਟਰੈਂਗੇ ॥੧੧੮੭॥
mer halai sukh hai nidh baar taoo ran kee chhit te na ttarainge |1187|
Even if the Sumeru mountain is moved and the water of the ocean is dried up, we shall not leave the battlefield.”1187.
ਯੌ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ਬਤੀਯਾ ਤਿਨ ਸੋ ਕਸਿ ਕੈ ਇਕ ਬਾਨੁ ਸੁ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਚਲਾਯੋ ॥
yau keh kai bateeyaa tin so kas kai ik baan su sayaam chalaayo |
ਲਾਗਿ ਗਯੋ ਅਜਬੇਸ ਕੇ ਬਛ ਸੁ ਲਾਗਤ ਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਖੇਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
laag gayo ajabes ke bachh su laagat hee kachh khed na paayo |
Saying thus, he discharged one arrow towards the enemies with full strength, which hit the waist of Ajaib Singh, but it could not do any harm to him
ਫੇਰਿ ਹਠੀ ਹਠਿ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਇਮ ਬੈਨ ਮਹਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੋਪ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥
fer hatthee hatth kai har so im bain mahaa kar kop sunaayo |
ਕਾ ਕਹੀਏ ਤਿਹ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਕੋ ਜਿਹ ਤੇ ਧਨੁ ਕੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਤੂੰ ਪੜਿ ਆਯੋ ॥੧੧੮੮॥
kaa kahee tih panddit ko jih te dhan kee bidh toon parr aayo |1188|
That mighty warrior said angrily to Krishna, “O Krishna, who is such a Pundit, from whom you have learnt the art of warfare.1188.
ਕੋਪ ਭਰੀ ਜਦੁਵੀ ਪ੍ਰਿਤਨਾ ਇਤ ਤੇ ਉਮਡੀ ਉਤ ਤੇ ਵਹ ਆਈ ॥
kop bharee jaduvee pritanaa it te umaddee ut te veh aaee |
ਮਾਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਰ ਕੀਏ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਕਬਿ ਰਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਜੀਯ ਰੋਸ ਬਢਾਈ ॥
maar hee maar kee mukh te kab raam kahai jeey ros badtaaee |
The Yadava army, in great fury, rushed there shouting “Kill, Kill”
ਬਾਨ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ਗਦਾ ਕੇ ਲਗੇ ਬਹੁ ਜੂਝਿ ਪਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਦੁੰਦ ਲਰਾਈ ॥
baan kripaan gadaa ke lage bahu joojh pare kar dund laraaee |
In that war, a great part of the army fell down on the earth with the blows of arrows, swords and maces in that conflict
ਰੀਝ ਰਹੇ ਸੁਰ ਪੇਖਿ ਸਬੈ ਪੁਹਪਾਵਲਿ ਕੀ ਬਰਖਾ ਬਰਖਾਈ ॥੧੧੮੯॥
reejh rahe sur pekh sabai puhapaaval kee barakhaa barakhaaee |1189|
The gods on seeing this became pleased and showered flowers.1189.
ਇਤ ਤੇ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਰਿਸ ਬੀਰ ਲਰੈ ਨਭਿ ਮੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਦਿ ਸਨਾਦਿ ਨਿਹਾਰੈ ॥
eit te ran mai ris beer larai nabh mai brahamaad sanaad nihaarai |
ਆਗੇ ਨ ਐਸੋ ਭਯੋ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਰਨ ਆਪਸਿ ਮੈ ਇਮ ਬੋਲਿ ਉਚਾਰੈ ॥
aage na aiso bhayo kabahoon ran aapas mai im bol uchaarai |
On this side, the warriors are fighting in great rage and on the other side, seeing all this, Brahma and other gods are saying amongst themselves in the sky: “There had not been such a dreadful war earlier,”
ਜੂਝ ਪਰੇ ਤਿਹ ਸ੍ਰਉਨ ਢਰੇ ਭਰਿ ਖਪਰ ਜੁਗਨਿ ਪੀ ਕਿਲਕਾਰੈ ॥
joojh pare tih sraun dtare bhar khapar jugan pee kilakaarai |
The warriors are fighting to the end and the Yoginis are shrieking while filling their bowls with blood and drinking
ਮੁੰਡਨ ਮਾਲ ਅਨੇਕ ਗੁਹੀ ਸਿਵ ਕੇ ਗਨ ਧਨਿ ਹੀ ਧਨਿ ਪੁਕਾਰੈ ॥੧੧੯੦॥
munddan maal anek guhee siv ke gan dhan hee dhan pukaarai |1190|
The ganas of Shiva, hailing the warriors, are preparing many garlands of skulls.1190.
ਆਯੁਧ ਧਾਰਿ ਅਯੋਧਨ ਮੈ ਇਕ ਕੋਪ ਭਰੇ ਭਟ ਧਾਇ ਅਰੈ ॥
aayudh dhaar ayodhan mai ik kop bhare bhatt dhaae arai |
Carrying his weapons, some warrior, running forward in the battlefield is seen resisting
ਇਕ ਮਲ ਕੀ ਦਾਇਨ ਜੁਧ ਕਰੈ ਇਕ ਦੇਖ ਮਹਾ ਰਣ ਦਉਰਿ ਪਰੈ ॥
eik mal kee daaein judh karai ik dekh mahaa ran daur parai |
Someone is fighting like a wrestler and someone seeing the dreadful war, is running away
ਇਕ ਰਾਮ ਹੀ ਰਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਤੇ ਇਕੁ ਮਾਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਰ ਇਹੈ ਉਚਰੈ ॥
eik raam hee raam kahai mukh te ik maar hee maar ihai ucharai |
Someone is repeating the name of the Lord-god and someone is shouting loudly “Kill, Kill”
ਇਕ ਜੂਝਿ ਪਰੇ ਇਕ ਘਾਇ ਭਰੇ ਇਕ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕਹਾ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਰਰੈ ॥੧੧੯੧॥
eik joojh pare ik ghaae bhare ik sayaam kahaa ih bhaat rarai |1191|
Someone is dying and someone being wounded, is writhing.1191.
ਮੁਕੀਯਾ ਊ ਲਰੈ ਇਕ ਆਪਸ ਮੈ ਗਹਿ ਕੇਸਨਿ ਕੇਸ ਏਕ ਅਰੇ ਹੈਂ ॥
mukeeyaa aoo larai ik aapas mai geh kesan kes ek are hain |
Someone is fighting with twisted fist and someone is fighting by catching the hair
ਏਕ ਚਲੇ ਰਨ ਤੇ ਭਜਿ ਕੈ ਇਕ ਆਹਵ ਕੋ ਪਗ ਆਗੇ ਕਰੇ ਹੈਂ ॥
ek chale ran te bhaj kai ik aahav ko pag aage kare hain |
Someone is running away from the battlefield and someone is moving forward
ਏਕ ਲਰੇ ਗਹਿ ਫੇਟਨਿ ਫੇਟ ਕਟਾਰਨ ਸੋ ਦੋਊ ਜੂਝਿ ਮਰੇ ਹੈਂ ॥
ek lare geh fettan fett kattaaran so doaoo joojh mare hain |
Someone is fighting with the girdles and someone is fighting by inflicting blows with his spear
ਸੋਊ ਲਰੇ ਕਬਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਰੈ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕੁਲ ਕੀ ਜੋਊ ਲਾਜਿ ਭਰੇ ਹੈਂ ॥੧੧੯੨॥
soaoo lare kab raam rarai apune kul kee joaoo laaj bhare hain |1192|
The poet Shyam says that only those people are fighting, who think of their family-traditions.1192.
ਆਠੋ ਹੀ ਭੂਪ ਅਯੋਧਨ ਮੈ ਸਬ ਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਿਤਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਊਪਰਿ ਆਏ ॥
aattho hee bhoop ayodhan mai sab lai pritanaa har aoopar aae |
ਜੁਧ ਕਰੋ ਨ ਡਰੋ ਹਮ ਤੇ ਕਬਿ ਰਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਇਹ ਬੈਨ ਸੁਨਾਏ ॥
judh karo na ddaro ham te kab raam kahai ih bain sunaae |
All the eight kings fell upon Krishna alongwith their armies in the battlefield and said, “O Krishna! fight with us fearlessly,”
ਦੈ ਕੈ ਕਸੀਸਨਿ ਈਸਨਿ ਚਾਪਨਿ ਲੈ ਸਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਓਰਿ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
dai kai kaseesan eesan chaapan lai sar sree har or chalaae |
ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਜੂ ਪਾਨਿ ਸਰਾਸਨਿ ਲੈ ਸਰ ਸੋ ਸਰ ਆਵਤ ਕਾਟਿ ਗਿਰਾਏ ॥੧੧੯੩॥
sayaam joo paan saraasan lai sar so sar aavat kaatt giraae |1193|
Pulling their bows, they discharged their arrows towards Krishna and Krishna taking up his bow intercepted their arrows.1193.
ਤਉ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੈ ਧੁਜਨੀ ਅਰਿ ਕੀ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਚਹੂੰ ਦਿਸ ਤੇ ਰਿਸਿ ਘੇਰਿਯੋ ॥
tau mil kai dhujanee ar kee jadubeer chahoon dis te ris gheriyo |
ਆਪਸਿ ਮੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੈ ਭਟ ਧੀਰ ਹਨ︀ਯੋ ਬਲਬੀਰ ਇਹੈ ਪੁਨਿ ਟੇਰਿਯੋ ॥
aapas mai mil kai bhatt dheer hanayo balabeer ihai pun tteriyo |
The enemy’s army, in great fury surrounded Krishna from all the four sides and said, “O warriors! all of you may join together in order to kill Krishna
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਧਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਲੀ ਅਚਲੇਸ ਕਉ ਅਉਰ ਨਰੇਸਨਿ ਯਾ ਹੀ ਨਿਬੇਰਿਯੋ ॥
sree dhan singh balee achales kau aaur naresan yaa hee niberiyo |
ਇਉ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ਸਰ ਮਾਰਤ ਭਯੋ ਗਜ ਪੁੰਜ ਮਨੋ ਕਰਿ ਕੇਹਰਿ ਛੇਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੧੯੪॥
eiau keh kai sar maarat bhayo gaj punj mano kar kehar chheriyo |1194|
“It is he, who has killed Dhan Singh and Achlesh Singh and other kings,” saying this they surrounded Krishna like may elephants surrounding a lion.1194.
ਘੇਰਿ ਲਯੋ ਹਰਿ ਕੌ ਜਬ ਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਜੂ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਸਬ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਭਾਰੇ ॥
gher layo har kau jab hee har joo tab hee sab sasatr sanbhaare |
When Krishna was besieged, he held up his weapons
ਕੋਪਿ ਅਯੋਧਨ ਮੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਕੈ ਰਿਸ ਸਾਥ ਘਨੇ ਅਰਿ ਬੀਰ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥
kop ayodhan mai fir kai ris saath ghane ar beer sanghaare |
In his fury, he killed many enemies in the battlefield, the heads of many were chopped,
ਏਕਨ ਕੇ ਸਿਰ ਕਾਟਿ ਦਏ ਇਕ ਜੀਵਤ ਹੀ ਗਹਿ ਕੇਸਿ ਪਛਾਰੇ ॥
ekan ke sir kaatt de ik jeevat hee geh kes pachhaare |
And many were knocked down by catching their hair
ਏਕ ਲਰੇ ਕਟਿ ਭੂਮਿ ਪਰੇ ਇਕ ਦੇਖ ਡਰੇ ਮਰਿ ਗੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਾਰੇ ॥੧੧੯੫॥
ek lare katt bhoom pare ik dekh ddare mar ge bin maare |1195|
Some of the warriors having been chopped fell on the earth and some of them seeing all this died without fighting.1195.
ਆਠੋ ਈ ਭੂਪ ਕਹਿਓ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਭਟ ਭਾਜਤ ਹੋ ਕਹਾ ਜੁਧੁ ਕਰੋ ॥
aattho ee bhoop kahio mukh te bhatt bhaajat ho kahaa judh karo |
All the eight kings said, “O warriors! do not run away and fight till the last
ਜਬ ਲਉ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਹਮ ਜੀਵਤ ਹੈ ਤਬ ਲਉ ਹਰਿ ਤੇ ਤੁਮ ਹੂੰ ਨ ਡਰੋ ॥
jab lau ran mai ham jeevat hai tab lau har te tum hoon na ddaro |
Do not fear Krishna as long as we are alive
ਹਮਰੋ ਇਹ ਆਇਸ ਹੈ ਤੁਮ ਕੋ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਕੇ ਸਾਮੁਹਿ ਜਾਇ ਲਰੋ ॥
hamaro ih aaeis hai tum ko jadubeer ke saamuhi jaae laro |
“We command you to confront and fight with Krishna, the king of Yadavas
ਕੋਊ ਆਹਵ ਤੇ ਨਹੀ ਨੈਕੁ ਟਰੋ ਇਕ ਜੂਝਿ ਪਰੋ ਇਕ ਧਾਇ ਅਰੋ ॥੧੧੯੬॥
koaoo aahav te nahee naik ttaro ik joojh paro ik dhaae aro |1196|
None of you will have the idea of avoiding the war, even slightly, run forward and fight till the last.”1196.
ਫੇਰਿ ਫਿਰੇ ਪਟ ਆਯੁਧ ਲੈ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਕਉ ਘੇਰਿ ਲੀਯੋ ॥
fer fire patt aayudh lai ran mai jadubeer kau gher leeyo |
Then the warriors taking up their weapons fought in the battle and surrounded Krishna
ਨ ਟਰੇ ਅਤਿ ਰੋਸਿ ਭਿਰੇ ਜੀਯ ਮੈ ਅਤਿ ਆਹਵ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਕੀਯੋ ॥
n ttare at ros bhire jeey mai at aahav chitr bachitr keeyo |
They did not retrace their steps even for an instant and waged a violent war in great fury
ਅਸਿ ਲੈ ਬਰ ਬੀਰ ਗਦਾ ਗਹਿ ਕੈ ਰਿਪੁ ਕੋ ਦਲੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਬਿਦਾਰਿ ਦੀਯੋ ॥
as lai bar beer gadaa geh kai rip ko dal maar bidaar deeyo |
Holding their swords and maces in their hands, they broke the enemy’s army into fragments
ਇਕ ਬੀਰਨ ਕੇ ਪਦੁ ਸੀਸ ਕਟੇ ਭਟ ਏਕਨ ਕੋ ਦਯੋ ਫਾਰਿ ਹੀਯੋ ॥੧੧੯੭॥
eik beeran ke pad sees katte bhatt ekan ko dayo faar heeyo |1197|
Somewhere they chopped the heads of the warriors and somewhere they tore their bosoms.1197.
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਸਰਾਸਨਿ ਲੈ ਬਹੁ ਕਾਟਿ ਰਥੀ ਸਿਰ ਭੂਮਿ ਗਿਰਾਏ ॥
sree jadubeer saraasan lai bahu kaatt rathee sir bhoom giraae |
Krishna taking his bow in his hand, he knocked down many warriors on chariots,
ਆਯੁਧ ਲੈ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਇਕ ਕੋਪਿ ਭਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਪੈ ਪੁਨਿ ਧਾਏ ॥
aayudh lai apune apune ik kop bhare har pai pun dhaae |
But again the enemies, taking up their weapons in their hands,
ਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਿਜਨਾਥ ਕਰੰ ਗਹਿ ਖਗ ਅਭਗ ਹਨੇ ਸੁ ਘਨੇ ਤਹ ਘਾਏ ॥
te brijanaath karan geh khag abhag hane su ghane teh ghaae |
They fell upon Krishna, Krishna killed them with his sword and
ਭਾਜਿ ਗਏ ਹਰਿ ਤੇ ਅਰਿ ਇਉ ਸੁ ਕੋਊ ਨਹਿ ਆਹਵ ਮੈ ਠਹਰਾਏ ॥੧੧੯੮॥
bhaaj ge har te ar iau su koaoo neh aahav mai tthaharaae |1198|
In this way those who survived, they could not stay in the battlefield.1198.
