ਅਥ ਪੰਚਮੋ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਆਸ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਕੋ ਰਾਜ ਕਥਨੰ ॥

ath panchamo avataar brahamaa biaas man raajaa ko raaj kathanan |

Now being the description of Vyas, the fifth incarnation of Brahma and the description of the rule of king menu.

PAADHARI STANZA

ਤ੍ਰੇਤਾ ਬਿਤੀਤ ਜੁਗ ਦੁਆਪੁਰਾਨ ॥

tretaa biteet jug duaapuraan |

ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਦੇਖ ਖੇਲੇ ਖਿਲਾਨ ॥

bahu bhaat dekh khele khilaan |

Treat age passed and Dwapar age came, when Krishna manifested himself and performed various kinds of sports, then Vyas was born

ਜਬ ਭਯੋ ਆਨਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨਾਵਤਾਰ ॥

jab bhayo aan krisanaavataar |

ਤਬ ਭਏ ਬ︀ਯਾਸ ਮੁਖ ਆਨਿ ਚਾਰ ॥੫॥

tab bhe bayaas mukh aan chaar |5|

He had a charming face.5.

ਜੇ ਜੇ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਕੀਅ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਦੇਵ ॥

je je charitr keea krisan dev |

ਤੇ ਤੇ ਭਨੇ ਸੁ ਸਾਰਦਾ ਤੇਵ ॥

te te bhane su saaradaa tev |

Whatever sports Krishna performed, he described them with the halp of Saraswati the godess of learning

ਅਬ ਕਹੋ ਤਉਨ ਸੰਛੇਪ ਠਾਨਿ ॥

ab kaho taun sanchhep tthaan |

ਜਿਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੀਨ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਭਿਰਾਮ ॥੬॥

jih bhaat keen sree abhiraam |6|

Now I describe them in brief, all the works, which Vyas executed.6.

ਜਿਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਥਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਪਸਾਰ ॥

jih bhaat kath keeno pasaar |

ਤਿਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਾਬਿ ਕਥਿ ਹੈ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥

tih bhaat kaab kath hai bichaar |

The manner in which he propagated his writings, in the same manner, I relate the same here thoughtfully

ਕਹੋ ਜੈਸ ਕਾਬ੍ਰਯ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਬ︀ਯਾਸ ॥

kaho jais kaabray kahiyo bayaas |

ਤਉਨੇ ਕਥਾਨ ਕਥੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਸ ॥੭॥

taune kathaan katho prabhaas |7|

The poetry that Vyas composed, I now relate here same type of glorious sayings.7.

ਜੇ ਭਏ ਭੂਪ ਭੂਅ ਮੋ ਮਹਾਨ ॥

je bhe bhoop bhooa mo mahaan |

ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਸੁਜਾਨ ਕਥਤ ਕਹਾਨ ॥

tin ko sujaan kathat kahaan |

The scholars describe the stories of all the great kings, who ruled over the earth

ਕਹ ਲਗੇ ਤਾਸਿ ਕਿਜੈ ਬਿਚਾਰੁ ॥

keh lage taas kijai bichaar |

ਸੁਣਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਬੈਣ ਸੰਛੇਪ ਯਾਰ ॥੮॥

sun lehu bain sanchhep yaar |8|

To what extent, they may be narrated, O my fried! Listen to the same in brief.8.

ਜੇ ਭਏ ਭੂਪ ਤੇ ਕਹੇ ਬ︀ਯਾਸ ॥

je bhe bhoop te kahe bayaas |

ਹੋਵਤ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਭਾਸ ॥

hovat puraan te naam bhaas |

Vayas narrated the exploits of the erstwhile kings, we gather this from the Puranas

ਮਨੁ ਭਯੋ ਰਾਜ ਮਹਿ ਕੋ ਭੂਆਰ ॥

man bhayo raaj meh ko bhooaar |

ਖੜਗਨ ਸੁ ਪਾਨਿ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਅਪਾਰ ॥੯॥

kharragan su paan mahimaa apaar |9|

There had been one mighty and glorious king named manu.9.

ਮਾਨਵੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਿਨੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ ॥

maanavee srisatt kinee prakaas |

ਦਸ ਚਾਰ ਲੋਕ ਆਭਾ ਅਭਾਸ ॥

das chaar lok aabhaa abhaas |

He brought to the human words and extending his approbation his greatness?

ਮਹਿਮਾ ਅਪਾਰ ਬਰਨੇ ਸੁ ਕਉਨ ॥

mahimaa apaar barane su kaun |

ਸੁਣਿ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਹੁਇ ਰਹੈ ਮਉਨ ॥੧੦॥

sun sravan krit hue rahai maun |10|

And listening to his praise one can only remain mute.10.

ਦਸ ਚਾਰ ਚਾਰਿ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥

das chaar chaar bidiaa nidhaan |

ਅਰਿ ਜੀਤਿ ਜੀਤਿ ਦਿਨੋ ਨਿਸਾਨ ॥

ar jeet jeet dino nisaan |

He was ocean of eighteen sciences and he got his trumpets sounded after conquering his enemies

ਮੰਡੇ ਮਹੀਪ ਮਾਵਾਸ ਖੇਤਿ ॥

mandde maheep maavaas khet |

ਗਜੇ ਮਸਾਣ ਨਚੇ ਪਰੇਤ ॥੧੧॥

gaje masaan nache paret |11|

He made many person kings, and those who resisted, he killed them, the ghosts and fiends also used to dance in his battlefield.11.

ਜਿਤੇ ਸੁ ਦੇਸ ਏਸੁਰ ਮਵਾਸ ॥

jite su des esur mavaas |

ਕਿਨੇ ਖਰਾਬ ਖਾਨੇ ਖ੍ਵਾਸ ॥

kine kharaab khaane khvaas |

He conquered many countries of opponents and destroyed many to the status of royalty

ਭੰਡੇ ਅਭੰਡ ਮੰਡੇ ਮਹੀਪ ॥

bhandde abhandd mandde maheep |

ਦਿਨੇ ਨਿਕਾਰ ਛਿਨੇ ਸੁ ਦੀਪ ॥੧੨॥

dine nikaar chhine su deep |12|

He snatched the countries of many and exiled them.12.

ਖੰਡੇ ਸੁ ਖੇਤਿ ਖੂਨੀ ਖਤ੍ਰੀਯਾਣ ॥

khandde su khet khoonee khatreeyaan |

ਮੋਰੇ ਅਮੋਰ ਜੋਧਾ ਦੁਰਾਣ ॥

more amor jodhaa duraan |

He killed many dreadful Kshatriyas and suppressed many corrupt and tyrannical warriors

ਚਲੇ ਅਚਲ ਮੰਡੇ ਅਮੰਡ ॥

chale achal mandde amandd |

ਕਿਨੇ ਘਮੰਡ ਖੰਡੇ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡ ॥੧੩॥

kine ghamandd khandde prachandd |13|

Many stable and invincible fighter fled before him and me destroyed many powerful warriors.13.

ਕਿਨੇ ਸੁ ਜੇਰ ਖੂਨੀ ਖਤ੍ਰੇਸ ॥

kine su jer khoonee khatres |

ਮੰਡੇ ਮਹੀਪ ਮਾਵਾਸ ਦੇਸ ॥

mandde maheep maavaas des |

He subdued many mighty kshatriyas and established many new kings,

ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਦੀਹ ਦੋਹੀ ਫਿਰਾਇ ॥

eih bhaat deeh dohee firaae |

ਮਾਨੀ ਸੁ ਮਾਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜ ਰਾਇ ॥੧੪॥

maanee su maan man raaj raae |14|

In the countries of opposing kings, in the way, the king menu was hououred throughout the bravery.14.

ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਦੀਹ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਸ ਰਾਜ ॥

eih bhaat deeh kar des raaj |

ਬਹੁ ਕਰੇ ਜਗਿ ਅਰੁ ਹੋਮ ਸਾਜ ॥

bahu kare jag ar hom saaj |

In this way, after conquering many kings, manu performed many hom-yajnas,

ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਸ੍ਵਰਣ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਸੁ ਦਾਨ ॥

bahu bhaat svaran kar kai su daan |

ਗੋਦਾਨ ਆਦਿ ਬਿਧਵਤ ਸਨਾਨ ॥੧੫॥

godaan aad bidhavat sanaan |15|

He bestowed different typed of charities of gold and cows and took bath at various pilgrim-satations.15.

ਜੋ ਹੁਤੀ ਜਗ ਅਰੁ ਬੇਦ ਰੀਤਿ ॥

jo hutee jag ar bed reet |

ਸੋ ਕਰੀ ਸਰਬ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਲਾਇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥

so karee sarab nrip laae preet |

He performed all the Vedic traditions with devotion

ਭੂਆ ਦਾਨ ਦਾਨ ਰਤਨਾਦਿ ਆਦਿ ॥

bhooaa daan daan ratanaad aad |

ਤਿਨ ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਲਿਨੇ ਸੁਵਾਦ ॥੧੬॥

tin bhaat bhaat line suvaad |16|

He also gave various types of charities concerning lands, jewels ect.16.

ਕਰਿ ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਇਮਿ ਨੀਤਿ ਰਾਜ ॥

kar des des im neet raaj |

ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਦਾਨ ਦੇ ਸਰਬ ਸਾਜ ॥

bahu bhaat daan de sarab saaj |

He promulgated his policies in all the countries, and donated gifts of various type

ਹਸਤਾਦਿ ਦਤ ਬਾਜਾਦਿ ਮੇਧ ॥

hasataad dat baajaad medh |

ਤੇ ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਿਨੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪੇਧ ॥੧੭॥

te bhaat bhaat kine nripedh |17|

He donated elephants ect. And performed various types of ashvamedha yajnas (horse-sacrifices). 17.

ਬਹੁ ਸਾਜ ਬਾਜ ਦਿਨੇ ਦਿਜਾਨ ॥

bahu saaj baaj dine dijaan |

ਦਸ ਚਾਰੁ ਚਾਰੁ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਸੁਜਾਨ ॥

das chaar chaar bidiaa sujaan |

He donated many decorated horses to those Brahmins, who had the knowledge of eighteen sciences, who were the reciters of six Shastr ect.

ਖਟ ਚਾਰ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਟੰਤ ॥

khatt chaar saasatr sinmrit rattant |

ਕੋਕਾਦਿ ਭੇਦ ਬੀਨਾ ਬਜੰਤ ॥੧੮॥

kokaad bhed beenaa bajant |18|

And also those who were skilful in playing various types of musical instruments.18.

ਘਨਸਾਰ ਘੋਰਿ ਘਸੀਅਤ ਗੁਲਾਬ ॥

ghanasaar ghor ghaseeat gulaab |

ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਮਦਿਤ ਡਾਰਿ ਚੂਵਤ ਸਰਾਬ ॥

mrig madit ddaar choovat saraab |

At that time the Sandal and roses were rubbed and the liquor of musk was prepared

ਕਸਮੀਰ ਘਾਸ ਘੋਰਤ ਸੁਬਾਸ ॥

kasameer ghaas ghorat subaas |

ਉਘਟਤ ਸੁਗੰਧ ਮਹਕੰਤ ਅਵਾਸ ॥੧੯॥

aughattat sugandh mahakant avaas |19|

During the reign of that king, the abodes of all the people gave out the fragrance of Kashmiri grass.19.
