ਰਚਿਯੋ ਸਰਪ ਮੇਧੰ ਬਡੋ ਜਗ ਰਾਜੰ ॥
rachiyo sarap medhan baddo jag raajan |
Sovereign (Jammeja) is performing the serpent-sacrifice.
ਕਰੈ ਬਿਪ ਹੋਮੈ ਸਰੈ ਸਰਬ ਕਾਜੰ ॥
karai bip homai sarai sarab kaajan |
The Brahmins are busy in performing Home ritual whose merit is setting everything right.
ਦਹੇ ਸਰਬ ਸਰਪੰ ਅਨੰਤੰ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰੰ ॥
dahe sarab sarapan anantan prakaaran |
Innumerable types of snakes are being burnt in the pit.
ਭੁਜੈ ਭੋਗ ਅਨੰਤੰ ਜੁਗੈ ਰਾਜ ਦੁਆਰੰ ॥੧॥੧੬੯॥
bhujai bhog anantan jugai raaj duaaran |1|169|
Innumerable cobras, drawn by the mantras at the gate of the king. Have been burnt.1.169.
ਕਿਤੇ ਅਸਟ ਹਸਤੰ ਸਤੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਇ ਨਾਰੰ ॥

Many snakes of about eight arms’ length and about seven arms’ length, with necks
ਕਿਤੇ ਦੁਆਦਿਸੇ ਹਸਤ ਲੌ ਪਰਮ ਭਾਰੰ ॥
kite duaadise hasat lau param bhaaran |
Many weighty serpents of twelve arms’ length
ਕਿਤੇ ਦ੍ਵੈ ਸਹੰਸ੍ਰ ਕਿਤੇ ਜੋਜਨੇਕੰ ॥
kite dvai sahansr kite jojanekan |
Many of two thousand arms’ length and many of one Yojana length
ਗਿਰੇ ਹੋਮ ਕੁੰਡੰ ਅਪਾਰੰ ਅਚੇਤੰ ॥੨॥੧੭੦॥

They all fell in the fire-altar pit unconsciously.2.170.
ਕਿਤੇ ਜੋਜਨੇ ਦੁਇ ਕਿਤੇ ਤੀਨ ਜੋਜਨ ॥

Many serpents of two Yajana length and many of three Yajanas
ਕਿਤੇ ਚਾਰ ਜੋਜਨ ਦਹੇ ਭੂਮ ਭੋਗਨ ॥
kite chaar jojan dahe bhoom bhogan |
Many of four Yajanas length, all these serpents of the earth were burnt
ਕਿਤੇ ਮੁਸਟ ਅੰਗੁਸਟ ਗ੍ਰਿਸਟੰ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨੰ ॥
kite musatt angusatt grisattan pramaanan |
Many of the size of a fist and a thumb and the length of a span
ਕਿਤੇ ਡੇਢੁ ਗਿਸਟੇ ਅੰਗੁਸਟੰ ਅਰਧਾਨੰ ॥੩॥੧੭੧॥
kite ddedt gisatte angusattan aradhaanan |3|171|
And many of the length of one and a half span and many of the size of half a thumb were burnt.3.171.
ਕਿਤੇ ਚਾਰ ਜੋਜਨ ਲਉ ਚਾਰ ਕੋਸੰ ॥
kite chaar jojan lau chaar kosan |
Many serpents from the length of four Yajanas upto four kos,
ਛੁਐ ਘ੍ਰਿਤ ਜੈਸੇ ਕਰੈ ਅਗਨ ਹੋਮੰ ॥
chhuai ghrit jaise karai agan homan |
Were burnt in the altar-fire, as though the fire was touching the clarified butter.
ਫਣੰ ਫਟਕੈ ਫੇਣਕਾ ਫੰਤਕਾਰੰ ॥
fanan fattakai fenakaa fantakaaran |
While burning, the snakes fluttered their hoods, frothed and hissed.
ਛੁਟੈ ਲਪਟ ਜ੍ਵਾਲਾ ਬਸੈ ਬਿਖਧਾਰੰ ॥੪॥੧੭੨॥
chhuttai lapatt jvaalaa basai bikhadhaaran |4|172|
When they fell in the fire, the flame flared up.4.172.
ਕਿਤੇ ਸਪਤ ਜੋਜਨ ਲੌ ਕੋਸ ਅਸਟੰ ॥
kite sapat jojan lau kos asattan |
Many serpents from the length of seven upto eight Kos,
ਕਿਤੇ ਅਸਟ ਜੋਜਨ ਮਹਾ ਪਰਮ ਪੁਸਟੰ ॥
kite asatt jojan mahaa param pusattan |
Many of the length of eight Yojanas and very fat
ਭਯੋ ਘੋਰ ਬਧੰ ਜਰੇ ਕੋਟ ਨਾਗੰ ॥
bhayo ghor badhan jare kott naagan |
Millions of snakes were thus burnt and there was great killing.
ਭਜ︀ਯੋ ਤਛਕੰ ਭਛਕੰ ਜੇਮ ਕਾਗੰ ॥੫॥੧੭੩॥
bhajayo tachhakan bhachhakan jem kaagan |5|173|
Takshak, the king of snakes ran away like the crow from the falcon for fear of being eaten.5.173.
ਕੁਲੰ ਕੋਟ ਹੋਮੈ ਬਿਖੈ ਵਹਿਣ ਕੁੰਡੰ ॥
kulan kott homai bikhai vahin kunddan |
Millions of serpents of his clan were burnt in the fire-altar.
ਬਚੇ ਬਾਧ ਡਾਰੇ ਘਨੇ ਕੁੰਡ ਝੁੰਡੰ ॥
bache baadh ddaare ghane kundd jhunddan |
Those who were saved, were bound down and collectively thrown in the fire-pit.
ਭਜ︀ਯੋ ਨਾਗ ਰਾਜੰ ਤਕ੍ਰਯੋ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਲੋਕੰ ॥
bhajayo naag raajan takrayo indr lokan |
The king of Nagas ran away and took sheleter in the world of Indra.
ਜਰ︀ਯੋ ਬੈਦ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੰ ਭਰ︀ਯੋ ਸਕ੍ਰ ਸੋਕੰ ॥੬॥੧੭੪॥
jarayo baid mantran bharayo sakr sokan |6|174|
With the power of Vedic mantras, the Abode of Indra also began to broil and with this, Indra was in great agony.6.174.
ਬਧ︀ਯੋ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਜੰਤ੍ਰੰ ਗਿਰ︀ਯੋ ਭੂਮ ਮਧੰ ॥
badhayo mantr jantran girayo bhoom madhan |
Bound by mantras and tantras, (Takshak) ultimately fell on the earth.
ਅੜਿਓ ਆਸਤੀਕੰ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਸਿਧੰ ॥
arrio aasateekan mahaa bipr sidhan |
At that the great adept Brahmin Aasteek resisted the orders of the king.
ਭਿੜ੍ਰਯੋ ਭੇੜ ਭੂਪੰ ਝਿਣ੍ਰਯੋ ਝੇੜ ਝਾੜੰ ॥
bhirrrayo bherr bhoopan jhinrayo jherr jhaarran |
He quarreled with the king and in the strife felt offended
ਮਹਾ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਉਠ︀ਯੋ ਤਣੀ ਤੋੜ ਤਾੜੰ ॥੭॥੧੭੫॥
mahaa krodh utthayo tanee torr taarran |7|175|
And rose in great anger, breaking the strings of his clothes.7.175.
ਤਜ︀ਯੋ ਸ੍ਰਪ ਮੇਧੰ ਭਜ︀ਯੋ ਏਕ ਨਾਥੰ ॥
tajayo srap medhan bhajayo ek naathan |
He asked the king to forsake the serpent-sacrifice and meditate on the One Lord
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਸੂਝੈ ਸਬੈ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਸਾਜੰ ॥
kripaa mantr soojhai sabai srisatt saajan |
With whose Grace all the mantras and materials of the world come to our mind.
ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰਾਜ ਸਰਦੂਲ ਬਿਦ︀ਯਾ ਨਿਧਾਨੰ ॥
sunahu raaj saradool bidayaa nidhaanan |
“O the Lion-like monarch and the treasure of learning!
ਤਪੈ ਤੇਜ ਸਾਵੰਤ ਜੁਆਲਾ ਸਮਾਨੰ ॥੮॥੧੭੬॥
tapai tej saavant juaalaa samaanan |8|176|
“Thy Glory will shine like sun and blaze like fire.8.176.
ਮਹੀ ਮਾਹ ਰੂਪੰ ਤਪੈ ਤੇਜ ਭਾਨੰ ॥
mahee maah roopan tapai tej bhaanan |
“Thy beauty on the earth shall be moonlike and thy splendour sunlike
ਦਸੰ ਚਾਰ ਚਉਦਾਹ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਨਿਧਾਨੰ ॥
dasan chaar chaudaah bidiaa nidhaanan |
“Thou shall be treasure of fourteen learnings.
ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰਾਜ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰਗ ਸਾਰੰਗ ਪਾਨੰ ॥
sunahu raaj saasatrag saarang paanan |
“Listen, O wielder of the bow and the monarch with knowledge of the Shastras!
ਤਜਹੁ ਸਰਪ ਮੇਧੰ ਦਿਜੈ ਮੋਹਿ ਦਾਨੰ ॥੯॥੧੭੭॥
tajahu sarap medhan dijai mohi daanan |9|177|
“Bestow on me this gifts of abandoning the serpents-sacrifice.9.177.
ਤਜਹੁ ਜੋ ਨ ਸਰਪੰ ਜਰੋ ਅਗਨ ਆਪੰ ॥
tajahu jo na sarapan jaro agan aapan |
“If thou dost not abandon this gift of abandoning the serpent-sacrifice, I shall burn myself in the fire
ਕਰੋ ਦਗਧ ਤੋ ਕੌ ਦਿਵੌ ਐਸ ਸ੍ਰਾਪੰ ॥
karo dagadh to kau divau ais sraapan |
“Or by giving such curse I shall reduce thee to ashes
ਹਣ︀ਯੋ ਪੇਟ ਮਧੰ ਛੁਰੀ ਜਮਦਾੜੰ ॥
hanayo pett madhan chhuree jamadaarran |
“Or I shall pierce my belly with the sharp dagger
ਲਗੇ ਪਾਪ ਤੋ ਕੋ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰਾਜ ਗਾੜੰ ॥੧੦॥੧੭੮॥
lage paap to ko sunahu raaj gaarran |10|178|
“Listen! O king! thou shalt be causing a great sin for thyself of Brahmin-killing.”10.178.
ਸੁਨੇ ਬਿਪ ਬੋਲੰ ਉਠਿਯੋ ਆਪ ਰਾਜੰ ॥
sune bip bolan utthiyo aap raajan |
Hearing these words of the Brahmin, the king stood up.
ਤਜਿਯੋ ਸਰਪ ਮੇਧੰ ਪਿਤਾ ਬੈਰ ਕਾਜੰ ॥
tajiyo sarap medhan pitaa bair kaajan |
He abandoned the serpent-sacrifice and enmity for the death of his father.
ਬੁਲ︀ਯੋ ਬ︀ਯਾਸ ਪਾਸੰ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਚਾਰੰ ॥
bulayo bayaas paasan kariyo mantr chaaran |
He called Vyas near him and began consultations.
ਮਹਾ ਬੇਦ ਬਿਆਕਰਣ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਬਿਚਾਰੰ ॥੧੧॥੧੭੯॥
mahaa bed biaakaran bidiaa bichaaran |11|179|
Vyas was the great scholar of Vedas and the learning of Grammar.11.179.
ਸੁਨੀ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਕਾ ਦੁਇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੰ ਕਾਸਿ ਰਾਜੰ ॥
sunee putrakaa due grihan kaas raajan |
The king had heard that she king of Kashi had two daughter
ਮਹਾ ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਰੂਪ ਸੋਭਾ ਸਮਾਜੰ ॥
mahaa sundaree roop sobhaa samaajan |
Who were most beautiful and splendour of society.
ਜਿਣਿਉ ਜਾਇ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਹਣੋ ਦੁਸਟ ਪੁਸਟੰ ॥
jiniau jaae taa ko hano dusatt pusattan |
He wanted to go there in order to conquer them after killing the mighty tyrant.
ਕਰਿਯੋ ਧਿਆਨ ਤਾਨੇ ਲਦੇ ਭਾਰ ਉਸਟੰ ॥੧੨॥੧੮੦॥
kariyo dhiaan taane lade bhaar usattan |12|180|
He then left (for that city) with loaded camel.12.180.
ਚਲੀ ਸੈਨ ਸੂਕਰ ਪਰਾਚੀ ਦਿਸਾਨੰ ॥
chalee sain sookar paraachee disaanan |
The army moved towards the east like swift wind.
ਚੜੇ ਬੀਰ ਧੀਰੰ ਹਠੇ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਪਾਨੰ ॥
charre beer dheeran hatthe sasatr paanan |
With many heroes, enduring the resolute and weapon-wielders,
ਦੁਰਿਯੋ ਜਾਇ ਦੁਰਗ ਸੁ ਬਾਰਾਣਸੀਸੰ ॥
duriyo jaae durag su baaraanaseesan |
The king of Kashi concealed himself in his ciadel,
ਘੇਰ︀ਯੋ ਜਾਇ ਫਉਜੰ ਭਜਿਓ ਏਕ ਈਸੰ ॥੧੩॥੧੮੧॥
gherayo jaae faujan bhajio ek eesan |13|181|
Which was besieged by the army of Janmeja he meditated only on Shiva.13.181.
ਮਚਿਯੋ ਜੁਧ ਸੁਧੰ ਬਹੇ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਘਾਤੰ ॥
machiyo judh sudhan bahe sasatr ghaatan |
The war began in full swing, there were many slayings with weapons
ਗਿਰੇ ਅਧੁ ਵਧੰ ਸਨਧੰ ਬਿਪਾਤੰ ॥
gire adh vadhan sanadhan bipaatan |
And the heroes, cut into bits, fell in the field.
ਗਿਰੇ ਹੀਰ ਚੀਰੰ ਸੁ ਬੀਰੰ ਰਜਾਣੰ ॥
gire heer cheeran su beeran rajaanan |
The warriors experienced bloodbath and fell with their clothes filled with blood.
ਕਟੈ ਅਧੁ ਅਧੰ ਛੁਟੇ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਧ︀ਯਾਨੰ ॥੧੪॥੧੮੨॥
kattai adh adhan chhutte rudr dhayaanan |14|182|
They were chopped into halves the contemplation of Shva was interrupted.14.182.
ਗਿਰੇ ਖੇਤ੍ਰ ਖਤ੍ਰਾਣ ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਖਤ੍ਰਾਣੰ ॥
gire khetr khatraan khatree khatraanan |
Many Kshatriyas of reputation fell in the battlefield.
ਬਜੀ ਭੇਰ ਭੁੰਕਾਰ ਦ੍ਰੁਕਿਆ ਨਿਸਾਣੰ ॥
bajee bher bhunkaar drukiaa nisaanan |
The dreadful sound of kettledrums and trumpets resounded.
ਕਰੇ ਪੈਜਵਾਰੰ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰੈ ਸੁ ਬੀਰੰ ॥
kare paijavaaran prachaarai su beeran |
The heroic warriors were shouting and making pledges, and also striking blows.
ਫਿਰੇ ਰੁੰਡ ਮੁੰਡੰ ਤਣੰ ਤਛ ਤੀਰੰ ॥੧੫॥੧੮੩॥
fire rundd munddan tanan tachh teeran |15|183|
The trunks and heads, and bodies pierced by arrows were roaming.15.183.
ਬਿਭੇ ਦੰਤ ਵਰਮੰ ਪ੍ਰਛੇਦੈ ਤਨਾਨੰ ॥
bibhe dant varaman prachhedai tanaanan |
The shafts were penetrating into the steel-armour
ਕਰੇ ਮਰਦਨੰ ਅਰਦਨੰ ਮਰਦਮਾਨੰ ॥
kare maradanan aradanan maradamaanan |
And the heroic warriors were destroying the pride of others.
ਕਟੇ ਚਰਮ ਬਰਮੰ ਛੁਟੇ ਚਉਰ ਚਾਰੰ ॥
katte charam baraman chhutte chaur chaaran |
The bodies and armour were being cut and the flywhicks were being trampled
ਗਿਰੇ ਬੀਰ ਧੀਰੰ ਛੁਟੇ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਧਾਰੰ ॥੧੬॥੧੮੪॥
gire beer dheeran chhutte sasatr dhaaran |16|184|
And with the blows of weapons, the bold warriors were falling.16.184.
ਜਿਣ੍ਰਯੋ ਕਾਸਕੀਸੰ ਹਣ︀ਯੋ ਸਰਬ ਸੈਨੰ ॥
jinrayo kaasakeesan hanayo sarab sainan |
The king of Kashi was conquered and all his forces were destroyed.
ਬਰੀ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਕਾ ਤਾਹ ਕੰਪ︀ਯੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਨੈਨੰ ॥
baree putrakaa taah kanpayo trinainan |
Both his daughters were wedded by Janmeja, seeing which Shiva, the three-eyed god, trembled.
ਭਇਓ ਮੇਲ ਗੇਲੰ ਮਿਲੇ ਰਾਜ ਰਾਜੰ ॥
bheo mel gelan mile raaj raajan |
Both the kings then became friendly the conquered kingdom was returned,
ਭਈ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਚਾਰੰ ਸਰੇ ਸਰਬ ਕਾਜੰ ॥੧੭॥੧੮੫॥
bhee mitr chaaran sare sarab kaajan |17|185|
Friendship developed between both the kings and all their works were settled appropriately.17.185.
ਮਿਲੀ ਰਾਜ ਦਾਜੰ ਸੁ ਦਾਸੀ ਅਨੂਪੰ ॥
milee raaj daajan su daasee anoopan |
The King janmeja received a unique maid-servant in his dowry,
ਮਹਾ ਬਿਦ︀ਯਵੰਤੀ ਅਪਾਰੰ ਸਰੂਪੰ ॥
mahaa bidayavantee apaaran saroopan |
Who was very learned and supremely beautiful.
ਮਿਲੇ ਹੀਰ ਚੀਰੰ ਕਿਤੇ ਸਿਆਉ ਕਰਨੰ ॥
mile heer cheeran kite siaau karanan |
He also received diamonds, garments and horses of black ears
ਮਿਲੇ ਮਤ ਦੰਤੀ ਕਿਤੇ ਸੇਤ ਬਰਨੰ ॥੧੮॥੧੮੬॥
mile mat dantee kite set baranan |18|186|
He also got many wanton white-coloured elephants with tusks.18.186.
ਕਰ︀ਯੋ ਬ︀ਯਾਹ ਰਾਜਾ ਭਇਓ ਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨੰ ॥
karayo bayaah raajaa bheo su prasanan |
On his marriage, the king became very happy.
ਭਲੀ ਭਾਤ ਪੋਖੇ ਦਿਜੰ ਸਰਬ ਅੰਨੰ ॥
bhalee bhaat pokhe dijan sarab anan |
All the Brahmin were satisfied with the grant of all types of corn.
ਕਰੇ ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤੰ ਮਹਾ ਗਜ ਦਾਨੰ ॥
kare bhaat bhaatan mahaa gaj daanan |
The king gave in charity various of elephants.
ਭਏ ਦੋਇ ਪੁਤ੍ਰੰ ਮਹਾ ਰੂਪ ਮਾਨੰ ॥੧੯॥੧੮੭॥
bhe doe putran mahaa roop maanan |19|187|
From both his wives, two very beautiful sons were born.19.187.
ਲਖੀ ਰੂਪਵੰਤੀ ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਦਾਸੀ ॥
lakhee roopavantee mahaaraaj daasee |
(One day) the king saw the winsome maid-servant.
ਮਨੋ ਚੀਰ ਕੈ ਚਾਰ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਨਿਕਾਸੀ ॥
mano cheer kai chaar chandraa nikaasee |
He felt as if the moonlight hath penetrated out of the moon.
ਲਹੈ ਚੰਚਲਾ ਚਾਰ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਲਤਾ ਸੀ ॥
lahai chanchalaa chaar bidiaa lataa see |
He considered her as beautiful lightning and as creeper of learning
ਕਿਧੌ ਕੰਜਕੀ ਮਾਝ ਸੋਭਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸੀ ॥੨੦॥੧੮੮॥
kidhau kanjakee maajh sobhaa prakaasee |20|188|
Or the inner glory of the lotus hath manifested itself.20.188.
ਕਿਧੌ ਫੂਲ ਮਾਲਾ ਲਖੈ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਸੀ ॥
kidhau fool maalaa lakhai chandramaa see |
It seemd as if she was a garland of flowers or the moon itself
ਕਿਧੌ ਪਦਮਨੀ ਮੈ ਬਨੀ ਮਾਲਤੀ ਸੀ ॥
kidhau padamanee mai banee maalatee see |
It may be the flower of Malti or it may be Padmini,
ਕਿਧੌ ਪੁਹਪ ਧੰਨਿਆ ਫੁਲੀ ਰਾਇਬੇਲੰ ॥
kidhau puhap dhaniaa fulee raaeibelan |
Or it may be Rati (the wife of god of love) or it may be the superb creeper of flowers.
ਤਜੈ ਅੰਗ ਤੇ ਬਾਸੁ ਚੰਪਾ ਫੁਲੇਲੰ ॥੨੧॥੧੮੯॥
tajai ang te baas chanpaa fulelan |21|189|
The fragrance of the flowers of champa (Michelia champacca) was emanating from her limbs.21.189.
ਕਿਧੌ ਦੇਵ ਕੰਨਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਿਥੀ ਲੋਕ ਡੋਲੈ ॥
kidhau dev kaniaa prithee lok ddolai |
It seemed as if a heavenly damsel was roaming on the earth,
ਕਿਧੌ ਜਛਨੀ ਕਿਨ੍ਰਨੀ ਸਿਉ ਕਲੋਲੈ ॥
kidhau jachhanee kinranee siau kalolai |
Or a Yaksha or Kinnar woman was busy in her frolics,
ਕਿਧੌ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਬੀਜੰ ਫਿਰੈ ਮਧਿ ਬਾਲੰ ॥
kidhau rudr beejan firai madh baalan |
Or the semen of god Shiva had strayed in the form of young damsel,
ਕਿਧੌ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਪਾਨੰ ਨਚੈ ਕਉਲ ਨਾਲੰ ॥੨੨॥੧੯੦॥
kidhau patr paanan nachai kaul naalan |22|190|
Or the drops of water were dancing on the lotus leaf.22.190.
ਕਿਧੌ ਰਾਗਮਾਲਾ ਰਚੀ ਰੰਗ ਰੂਪੰ ॥
kidhau raagamaalaa rachee rang roopan |
It seemed as if a wreath of musical modes was presenting itself in colour and form
ਕਿਧੌ ਇਸਤ੍ਰਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਚੀ ਭੂਪ ਭੂਪੰ ॥
kidhau isatr raajaa rachee bhoop bhoopan |
Or the Lord, king of kings, had created her as the Sovereign of beautiful women
ਕਿਧੌ ਨਾਗ ਕੰਨਿਆ ਕਿਧੌ ਬਾਸਵੀ ਹੈ ॥

Her wonderful and infinite beauty glistened like a painting.
ਮਹਾ ਰੂਪਵੰਤੀ ਮਹਾ ਜੋਬਨਾਰੰ ॥

She was most elegant and most youthful.
ਮਹਾ ਗਿਆਨਵੰਤੀ ਸੁ ਬਿਗਿਆਨ ਕਰਮੰ ॥
mahaa giaanavantee su bigiaan karaman |
She was most knowledgeable and adept in scientific works.
ਪੜੇ ਕੰਠਿ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਸੁ ਬਿਦਿਆਦਿ ਧਰਮੰ ॥੨੪॥੧੯੨॥

She had all learning at her finger ends and was thus an adept in the discipline.24.192.
ਲਖੀ ਰਾਜ ਕੰਨਿਆਨ ਤੇ ਰੂਪਵੰਤੀ ॥
lakhee raaj kaniaan te roopavantee |
The king considered her more winsome than the light of fire.
ਲਸੈ ਜੋਤ ਜ੍ਵਾਲਾ ਅਪਾਰੰ ਅਨੰਤੀ ॥
lasai jot jvaalaa apaaran anantee |
The light of her face shone enormously than the light of fire.
ਲਖ︀ਯੋ ਤਾਹਿ ਜਨਮੇਜਏ ਆਪ ਰਾਜੰ ॥
lakhayo taeh janameje aap raajan |
The king Janmeja himself considered her like this,
ਕਰੇ ਪਰਮ ਭੋਗੰ ਦੀਏ ਸਰਬ ਸਾਜੰ ॥੨੫॥੧੯੩॥
kare param bhogan dee sarab saajan |25|193|
Therefore he ardently copulated with her and gave her all the royal paraphernalia.25.193.
ਬਢਿਓ ਨੇਹੁ ਤਾ ਸੋ ਤਜੀ ਰਾਜ ਕੰਨਿਆ ॥
badtio nehu taa so tajee raaj kaniaa |
The king was greatly in love with her he abandoned the king’s daughters (queens)
ਹੁਤੀ ਸਿਸਟ ਕੀ ਦਿਸਟ ਮਹਿ ਪੁਸਟ ਧੰਨਿਆ ॥
hutee sisatt kee disatt meh pusatt dhaniaa |
Who were considered eminent and fortunate in the sight of the world.
ਭਇਓ ਏਕ ਪੁਤ੍ਰੰ ਮਹਾ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
bheo ek putran mahaa sasatr dhaaree |
A son, a great weapon-wielder was born to him
ਦਸੰ ਚਾਰ ਚਉਦਾਹ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਬਿਚਾਰੀ ॥੨੬॥੧੯੪॥
dasan chaar chaudaah bidiaa bichaaree |26|194|
He became adept in fourteen learnings.26.194.
ਧਰਿਓ ਅਸਮੇਧੰ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਮੰ ॥
dhario asamedhan pritham putr naaman |
The king named his first son as ASMEDH,
ਭਇਓ ਅਸਮੇਧਾਨ ਦੂਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨੰ ॥
bheo asamedhaan doojo pradhaanan |
And named his second son as ASMEDHAN.
ਅਜੈ ਸਿੰਘ ਰਾਖ︀ਯੋ ਰਜੀ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਸੂਰੰ ॥
ajai singh raakhayo rajee putr sooran |
The maid-servant’s son was named AJAI SINGH,
ਮਹਾ ਜੰਗ ਜੋਧਾ ਮਹਾ ਜਸ ਪੂਰੰ ॥੨੭॥੧੯੫॥
mahaa jang jodhaa mahaa jas pooran |27|195|
Who was a great hero, a great warrior and greatly renowned.27.195.
ਭਇਓ ਤਨ ਦੁਰੁਸਤੰ ਬਲਿਸਟੰ ਮਹਾਨੰ ॥
bheo tan durusatan balisattan mahaanan |
He was a person of healthy body and great strength.
ਮਹਾਜੰਗ ਜੋਧਾ ਸੁ ਸਸਤ੍ਰੰ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨੰ ॥
mahaajang jodhaa su sasatran pradhaanan |
He was a great warrior in the battlefield and adept in warfare.
ਹਣੈ ਦੁਸਟ ਪੁਸਟੰ ਮਹਾ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਧਾਰੰ ॥
hanai dusatt pusattan mahaa sasatr dhaaran |
He killed prominent tyrants with his sharp-edged weapons.
ਬਡੇ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਤੇ ਜਿਵੇ ਰਾਵਣਾਰੰ ॥੨੮॥੧੯੬॥
badde satr jeete jive raavanaaran |28|196|
He conquered many enemies like Lord Rama, the killer of Ranana.28.196.
ਚੜਿਓ ਏਕ ਦਿਵਸੰ ਅਖੇਟੰ ਨਰੇਸੰ ॥
charrio ek divasan akhettan naresan |
One day the King Janmeja went hunting.
ਲਖੇ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਧਾਯੋ ਗਯੋ ਅਉਰ ਦੇਸੰ ॥
lakhe mrig dhaayo gayo aaur desan |
Seeing a deer, he pursued him and went to another country.
ਸ੍ਰਮਿਓ ਪਰਮ ਬਾਟੰ ਤਕਿਯੋ ਏਕ ਤਾਲੰ ॥
sramio param baattan takiyo ek taalan |
After the long and arduous journey, the king was tired when he saw a tank,
ਤਹਾ ਦਉਰ ਕੈ ਪੀਨ ਪਾਨੰ ਉਤਾਲੰ ॥੨੯॥੧੯੭॥
tahaa daur kai peen paanan utaalan |29|197|
He ran there quickly to drink water.29.197.
ਕਰਿਓ ਰਾਜ ਸੈਨੰ ਕਢਿਓ ਬਾਰ ਬਾਜੰ ॥
kario raaj sainan kadtio baar baajan |
Then the king went to sleep. (the destiny) caused a horse to come out of water.
ਤਕੀ ਬਾਜਨੀ ਰੂਪ ਰਾਜੰ ਸਮਾਜੰ ॥
takee baajanee roop raajan samaajan |
He saw the beautiful royal mare.
ਲਗ︀ਯੋ ਆਨ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਰਹ︀ਯੋ ਤਾਹਿ ਗਰਭੰ ॥
lagayo aan taa ko rehayo taeh garabhan |
He copulated with her and made her pregnant.
ਭਇਓ ਸਿਯਾਮ ਕਰਣੰ ਸੁ ਬਾਜੀ ਅਦਰਬੰ ॥੩੦॥੧੯੮॥
bheo siyaam karanan su baajee adaraban |30|198|
From her an invaluable horse of black ears was born.30.198.
ਕਰਿਯੋ ਬਾਜ ਮੇਧੰ ਬਡੋ ਜਗ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
kariyo baaj medhan baddo jag raajaa |
The king Janmeja began his great horse-sacrifice.
ਜਿਣੇ ਸਰਬ ਭੂਪੰ ਸਰੇ ਸਰਬ ਕਾਜਾ ॥
jine sarab bhoopan sare sarab kaajaa |
He conquered all the kings and all his errands were set right.
ਗਡ੍ਰਯੋ ਜਗ ਥੰਭੰ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਹੋਮ ਕੁੰਡੰ ॥
gaddrayo jag thanbhan kariyo hom kunddan |
The columns of the sacrificial place were fixed and the sacrificial altar was constructed.
ਭਲੀ ਭਾਤ ਪੋਖੇ ਬਲੀ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਝੁੰਡੰ ॥੩੧॥੧੯੯॥
bhalee bhaat pokhe balee bipr jhunddan |31|199|
He satisfied nicely the assembly of the Brahmins giving wealth in charity.31.199.
ਦਏ ਕੋਟ ਦਾਨੰ ਪਕੇ ਪਰਮ ਪਾਕੰ ॥
de kott daanan pake param paakan |
Millins of gifts were given in charity and pure foods were served.
ਕਲੂ ਮਧਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਬਡੋ ਧਰਮ ਸਾਕੰ ॥
kaloo madh keeno baddo dharam saakan |
The king performed a great event of Dharma in the Kaliyuga.
ਲਗੀ ਦੇਖਨੇ ਆਪ ਜਿਉ ਰਾਜ ਬਾਲਾ ॥
lagee dekhane aap jiau raaj baalaa |
As the queen began to scan all this,
ਮਹਾ ਰੂਪਵੰਤੀ ਮਹਾ ਜੁਆਲ ਆਲਾ ॥੩੨॥੨੦੦॥
mahaa roopavantee mahaa juaal aalaa |32|200|
She the most beautiful and abode of Supreme glory.32.200.
ਉਡ︀ਯੋ ਪਉਨ ਕੇ ਬੇਗ ਸਿਯੋ ਅਗ੍ਰ ਪਤ੍ਰੰ ॥
auddayo paun ke beg siyo agr patran |
The frontal garment of the queen flew away by the gust of wind.
ਹਸੇ ਦੇਖ ਨਗਨੰ ਤ੍ਰੀਯੰ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਛਤ੍ਰੰ ॥
hase dekh naganan treeyan bipr chhatran |
The Brahmins and Kshatriyas (in the assembly) seeing the nakedness of the queen laughed.
ਭਇਓ ਕੋਪ ਰਾਜਾ ਗਹੇ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਸਰਬੰ ॥
bheo kop raajaa gahe bipr saraban |
The king in great fury caught hold of all the Brahmins.
ਦਹੇ ਖੀਰ ਖੰਡੰ ਬਡੇ ਪਰਮ ਗਰਬੰ ॥੩੩॥੨੦੧॥
dahe kheer khanddan badde param garaban |33|201|
All the highly proud great Pundits were burnt with hot mixture of milk and sugar.33.201.
ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮ ਬਾਧਿ ਕੈ ਸਰਬ ਮੂੰਡੇ ਮੁੰਡਾਏ ॥
pritham baadh kai sarab moondde munddaae |
Firstly all the Brahmins were bound down and their heads were shaved.
ਪੁਨਰ ਏਡੂਆ ਸੀਸ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਟਿਕਾਏ ॥
punar eddooaa sees taa ke ttikaae |
Then the pads were placed on the top of their heads.
ਪੁਨਰ ਤਪਤ ਕੈ ਖੀਰ ਕੇ ਮਧਿ ਡਾਰਿਓ ॥
punar tapat kai kheer ke madh ddaario |
Then the boiling milk was poured (within the pads).
ਇਮੰ ਸਰਬ ਬਿਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਕਉ ਜਾਰਿ ਮਾਰਿਓ ॥੩੪॥੨੦੨॥
eiman sarab bipraan kau jaar maario |34|202|
And thus all the Brahmins were burnt and killed.34.202.
ਕਿਤੇ ਬਾਧਿ ਕੈ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਬਾਚੇ ਦਿਵਾਰੰ ॥
kite baadh kai bipr baache divaaran |
Many Brahmins were entombed in the walls
ਕਿਤੇ ਬਾਧ ਫਾਸੀ ਦੀਏ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਭਾਰੰ ॥
kite baadh faasee dee bipr bhaaran |
Many eminent Brahmins were hanged
ਕਿਤੇ ਬਾਰਿ ਬੋਰੇ ਕਿਤੇ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਾਰੇ ॥
kite baar bore kite agan jaare |
Many were drowned in water and many were bound in fire
ਕਿਤੇ ਅਧਿ ਚੀਰੇ ਕਿਤੇ ਬਾਧ ਫਾਰੇ ॥੩੫॥੨੦੩॥
kite adh cheere kite baadh faare |35|203|
Many were sawed into halves and many were bound and their bellies wre torn.35.203.
ਲਗਿਯੋ ਦੋਖ ਭੂਪੰ ਬਢਿਯੋ ਕੁਸਟ ਦੇਹੀ ॥
lagiyo dokh bhoopan badtiyo kusatt dehee |
The king then suffered from the blemish of Brahmin-killing and his body was inflicted by leprosy.
ਸਭੇ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਬੋਲੇ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਰਾਜ ਨੇਹੀ ॥
sabhe bipr bole kariyo raaj nehee |
He called all other Brahmins and treated them with love.
ਕਹੋ ਕਉਨ ਸੋ ਬੈਠਿ ਕੀਜੈ ਬਿਚਾਰੰ ॥
kaho kaun so baitth keejai bichaaran |
He asked them to sit and contemplate as to how,
ਦਹੈ ਦੇਹ ਦੋਖੰ ਮਿਟੈ ਪਾਪ ਭਾਰੰ ॥੩੬॥੨੦੪॥
dahai deh dokhan mittai paap bhaaran |36|204|
The suffering of the body and the great sin can be removed.36.204.
ਬੋਲੇ ਰਾਜ ਦੁਆਰੰ ਸਬੈ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਆਏ ॥
bole raaj duaaran sabai bipr aae |
All the invited Brahmins came to the royal court.
ਬਡੇ ਬਿਆਸ ਤੇ ਆਦਿ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਬੁਲਾਏ ॥
badde biaas te aad lai ke bulaae |
The eminent like Vyas and other were called.
ਦੇਖੈ ਲਾਗ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰੰ ਬੋਲੇ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਸਰਬੰ ॥
dekhai laag saasatran bole bipr saraban |
After scanning the Shastras, all the Brahmins said,
ਕਰਿਯੋ ਬਿਪ੍ਰਮੇਧੰ ਬਢਿਓ ਭੂਪ ਗਰਬੰ ॥੩੭॥੨੦੫॥
kariyo bipramedhan badtio bhoop garaban |37|205|
“The ego of the king hath increased and because of this conceit, he mashed the Brahmins.37.205.
ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰਾਜ ਸਰਦੂਲ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਨਿਧਾਨੰ ॥
sunahu raaj saradool bidiaa nidhaanan |
“Listen, O Supreme monarch, the treasure of learning
ਕਰਿਯੋ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਮੇਧੰ ਸੁ ਜਗੰ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨੰ ॥
kariyo bipr medhan su jagan pramaanan |
“Thou didst mash the Brahmins during the sacrifice
ਭਇਓ ਅਕਸਮੰਤ੍ਰੰ ਕਹਿਓ ਨਾਹਿ ਕਉਨੈ ॥
bheo akasamantran kahio naeh kaunai |
“All this happened suddenly, no one directed thee for this
ਕਰੀ ਜਉਨ ਹੋਤੀ ਭਈ ਬਾਤ ਤਉਨੈ ॥੩੮॥੨੦੬॥
karee jaun hotee bhee baat taunai |38|206|
“All this hath been got done by the Providence, such happening had been recorded earlier.”38.206.
ਸੁਨਹੁ ਬਿਆਸ ਤੇ ਪਰਬ ਅਸਟੰ ਦਸਾਨੰ ॥
sunahu biaas te parab asattan dasaanan |
“O King! Listen from Vyas eighteen Parvas (parts) of Mahabharata
ਦਹੈ ਦੇਹ ਤੇ ਕੁਸਟ ਸਰਬੰ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਾਨੰ ॥
dahai deh te kusatt saraban nripaanan |
“Then all the ailment of leprosy will be removed from thy body.”
ਬੋਲੈ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਬਿਆਸੰ ਸੁਨੈ ਲਾਗ ਪਰਬੰ ॥
bolai bipr biaasan sunai laag paraban |
The eminent Brahmin Vyas was then called and the king began to listen to the Parvas (of Mahabharata).
ਪਰਿਯੋ ਭੂਪ ਪਾਇਨ ਤਜੇ ਸਰਬ ਗਰਬੰ ॥੩੯॥੨੦੭॥
pariyo bhoop paaein taje sarab garaban |39|207|
The king fell at the feet of Vyas forsaking all pride.39.207.
ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰਾਜ ਸਰਦੂਲ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਨਿਧਾਨੰ ॥
sunahu raaj saradool bidiaa nidhaanan |
(Vyas said J Listen, O Supreme monarch! the treasure of learning
ਹੂਓ ਭਰਥ ਕੇ ਬੰਸ ਮੈ ਰਘੁਰਾਨੰ ॥
hooo bharath ke bans mai raghuraanan |
In the linege of Bharat, there was a king named Raghu
ਭਇਓ ਤਉਨ ਕੇ ਬੰਸ ਮੈ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
bheo taun ke bans mai raam raajaa |
In his line, there was the king Rama
ਦੀਜੈ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਦਾਨੰ ਨਿਧਾਨੰ ਬਿਰਾਜਾ ॥੪੦॥੨੦੮॥
deejai chhatr daanan nidhaanan biraajaa |40|208|
Who gave the gift of life to the kashatriyas from the wrath of Parasurama and also the treasures and comfortable living.40.208.
ਭਇਓ ਤਉਨ ਕੀ ਜਦ ਮੈ ਜਦੁ ਰਾਜੰ ॥

In his clan, there was a king named Yadu
ਦਸੰ ਚਾਰ ਚੌਦਹ ਸੁ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਸਮਾਜੰ ॥
dasan chaar chauadah su bidiaa samaajan |
Who was erudite in all fourteen learnings
ਭਇਓ ਤਉਨ ਕੇ ਬੰਸ ਮੈ ਸੰਤਨੇਅੰ ॥
bheo taun ke bans mai santanean |
In his family, there was a king named Santanu
ਭਏ ਤਾਹਿ ਕੇ ਕਉਰਓ ਪਾਡਵੇਅੰ ॥੪੧॥੨੦੯॥
bhe taeh ke kauro paaddavean |41|209|
In his line, there were then Kaurvas and Pandavas.41.209.
ਭਏ ਤਉਨ ਕੇ ਬੰਸ ਮੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਤਰਾਸਟਰੰ ॥
bhe taun ke bans mai dhritaraasattaran |
In his family, there was Dhritrashtra,
ਮਹਾ ਜੁਧ ਜੋਧਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੋਧਾ ਮਹਾ ਸੁਤ੍ਰੰ ॥
mahaa judh jodhaa prabodhaa mahaa sutran |
Who was a great hero in wars and a teacher of great enemies.
ਭਏ ਤਉਨ ਕੇ ਕਉਰਵੰ ਕ੍ਰੂਰ ਕਰਮੰ ॥
bhe taun ke kauravan kraoor karaman |
In his house there were Kauravas of vicious Karmas,
ਕੀਓ ਛਤ੍ਰਣੰ ਜੈਨ ਕੁਲ ਛੈਣ ਕਰਮੰ ॥੪੨॥੨੧੦॥
keeo chhatranan jain kul chhain karaman |42|210|
Who worked as a chisel (destroyer) for the clan of Kshatriyas.42.210.
ਕੀਓ ਭੀਖਮੇ ਅਗ੍ਰ ਸੈਨਾ ਸਮਾਜੰ ॥
keeo bheekhame agr sainaa samaajan |
They made Bhishama the General of their forces
ਭਇਓ ਕ੍ਰੁਧ ਜੁਧੰ ਸਮੁਹ ਪੰਡੁ ਰਾਜੰ ॥
bheo krudh judhan samuh pandd raajan |
In great fury they waged their war against the sons of Pandu.
ਤਹਾ ਗਰਜਿਯੋ ਅਰਜਨੰ ਪਰਮ ਬੀਰੰ ॥
tahaa garajiyo arajanan param beeran |
In that war, the Supreme hereo Arjuna roared.
ਧਨੁਰ ਬੇਦ ਗਿਆਤਾ ਤਜੇ ਪਰਮ ਤੀਰੰ ॥੪੩॥੨੧੧॥
dhanur bed giaataa taje param teeran |43|211|
He was an adept in archery and shot his shafts superbly.43.211.
ਤਜੀ ਬੀਰ ਬਾਨਾ ਵਰੀ ਬੀਰ ਖੇਤੰ ॥
tajee beer baanaa varee beer khetan |
The great hero Arjuna shot his chain of arrows in the field (with such skill),
ਹਣਿਓ ਭੀਖਮੰ ਸਭੈ ਸੈਨਾ ਸਮੇਤੰ ॥
hanio bheekhaman sabhai sainaa sametan |
That he killed Bhishama and destroyed al his forces.
ਦਈ ਬਾਣ ਸਿਜਾ ਗਰੇ ਭੀਖਮੈਣੰ ॥
dee baan sijaa gare bheekhamainan |
He gave Bhishama the bed of arrows, on which he lay down.
ਜਯੰ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਪਾਇਓ ਸੁਖੰ ਪਾਡਵੇਣੰ ॥੪੪॥੨੧੨॥
jayan patr paaeo sukhan paaddavenan |44|212|
The great Pandava (Arjuna) attained the victory comfortably.44.212.
ਭਏ ਦ੍ਰੋਣ ਸੈਨਾਪਤੀ ਸੈਨਪਾਲੰ ॥
bhe dron sainaapatee sainapaalan |
The second general of Kauravas and master of their forces was Daronacharya.
ਭਇਓ ਘੋਰ ਜੁਧੰ ਤਹਾ ਤਉਨ ਕਾਲੰ ॥
bheo ghor judhan tahaa taun kaalan |
There at that time a horrible war was waged.
ਹਣਿਓ ਧ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਦੋਨੰ ਤਜੇ ਦ੍ਰੋਣ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੰ ॥
hanio dhrisatt donan taje dron praanan |
Dhrishtadyumna killed Dronacharya, who breathed his last.
ਕਰਿਓ ਜੁਧ ਤੇ ਦੇਵਲੋਕੰ ਪਿਆਣੰ ॥੪੫॥੨੧੩॥
kario judh te devalokan piaanan |45|213|
Dying in the battlefield, he went to heaven.45.213.
ਭਏ ਕਰਣ ਸੈਨਾਪਤੀ ਛਤ੍ਰਪਾਲੰ ॥
bhe karan sainaapatee chhatrapaalan |
Karan became the third General of the Kaurva army,
ਮਚ︀ਯੋ ਜੁਧ ਕ੍ਰੁਧੰ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਕਰਾਲੰ ॥
machayo judh krudhan mahaa bikaraalan |
Who in great fury waged a terrible war.
ਹਣਿਓ ਤਾਹਿ ਪੰਥੰ ਸਦੰ ਸੀਸੁ ਕਪਿਓ ॥
hanio taeh panthan sadan sees kapio |
He was killed by Partha (Arjuna) and immediately cut off his head.
ਗਿਰਿਓ ਤਉਣ ਯੁਧਿਸਟਰੰ ਰਾਜੁ ਥਪਿਓ ॥੪੬॥੨੧੪॥
girio taun yudhisattaran raaj thapio |46|214|
After his fall (death), the rule of Yudhishtra was firmly established.46.214.
ਭਏ ਸੈਣਪਾਲੰ ਬਲੀ ਸੂਲ ਸਲ੍ਰਯੰ ॥

ਪੁਨਰ ਹਸਤ ਯੁਧਿਸਟਰੰ ਸਕਤ ਬੇਧੰ ॥
punar hasat yudhisattaran sakat bedhan |
And wounded the elephant of Yudhistra with his dagger.
