Dohira

ਕਾਸਮੀਰ ਕੇ ਸਹਰ ਮੈ ਬੀਰਜ ਸੈਨ ਨਰੇਸ ॥

kaasameer ke sehar mai beeraj sain nares |

In a city in Kashmir, there lived a Raja called Biraj Sen.

ਤਾ ਕੇ ਦਲ ਕੇ ਬਲਹੁ ਤੇ ਕੰਪਤਿ ਹੁਤੋ ਸੁਰੇਸ ॥੧॥

taa ke dal ke balahu te kanpat huto sures |1|

He had such enormous power, that, even, the god Indra dreaded.(1)

ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਦੇਵਿ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਬੁਰੀ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਜਿਹ ਬੁਧਿ ॥

chitr dev taa kee triyaa buree hridai jih budh |

Chiter Devi was his wife who had spurious intelligence.

ਮੰਦ ਸੀਲ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਰਹੈ ਚਿਤ ਕੀ ਰਹੈ ਕੁਸੁਧਿ ॥੨॥

mand seel jaa ko rahai chit kee rahai kusudh |2|

She was neither gentle nor good at heart.(2)

ਬੋਲਿ ਰਸੋਯਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਕਹੀ ਇਹ ਰਾਜੈ ਬਿਖਿ ਦੇਹੁ ॥

bol rasoyeh tin kahee ih raajai bikh dehu |

She asked her cook to give poison to the Raja,

ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਢੈਹੌ ਹੌ ਤੁਮੈ ਅਬੈ ਅਧਿਕ ਧਨ ਲੇਹੁ ॥੩॥

bahut badtaihau hau tumai abai adhik dhan lehu |3|

And, in lieu, she promised to give him lot of wealth.(3)

ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਤਿਨ ਕਰੀ ਤਬ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਚਰਿਤ ਬਨਾਇ ॥

taa kee kahee na tin karee tab triy charit banaae |

But he did not accede to. Then the woman performed a vile Chritar,

ਰਾਜਾ ਕੌ ਨਿਉਤਾ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸਊਅਨ ਸਹਿਤ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥੪॥

raajaa kau niautaa kahiyo saooan sahit bulaae |4|

And she invited Raja along with all his ministers for dinner.(4)
