Fifth Mehl, Gaat'haa:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ik oankaar satigur prasaad |

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਕਰਪੂਰ ਪੁਹਪ ਸੁਗੰਧਾ ਪਰਸ ਮਾਨੁਖੵ ਦੇਹੰ ਮਲੀਣੰ ॥

karapoor puhap sugandhaa paras maanukhay dehan maleenan |

Camphor, flowers and perfume become contaminated, by coming into contact with the human body.

ਮਜਾ ਰੁਧਿਰ ਦ੍ਰੁਗੰਧਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਥਿ ਗਰਬੇਣ ਅਗੵਾਨਣੋ ॥੧॥

majaa rudhir drugandhaa naanak ath garaben agayaanano |1|

O Nanak, the ignorant one is proud of his foul-smelling marrow, blood and bones. ||1||

ਪਰਮਾਣੋ ਪਰਜੰਤ ਆਕਾਸਹ ਦੀਪ ਲੋਅ ਸਿਖੰਡਣਹ ॥

paramaano parajant aakaasah deep loa sikhanddanah |

Even if the mortal could reduce himself to the size of an atom, and shoot through the ethers,

ਗਛੇਣ ਨੈਣ ਭਾਰੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਧੂ ਨ ਸਿਧੵਤੇ ॥੨॥

gachhen nain bhaaren naanak binaa saadhoo na sidhayate |2|

Worlds and realms in the blink of an eye, O Nanak, without the Holy Saint, he shall not be saved. ||2||

ਜਾਣੋ ਸਤਿ ਹੋਵੰਤੋ ਮਰਣੋ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਣ ਮਿਥਿਆ ॥

jaano sat hovanto marano drisatten mithiaa |

Know for sure that death will come; whatever is seen is false.

ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਾਥਿ ਚਲੰਥੋ ਭਣੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ॥੩॥

keerat saath chalantho bhanant naanak saadh sangen |3|

So chant the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy; this alone shall go along with you in the end. ||3||

ਮਾਯਾ ਚਿਤ ਭਰਮੇਣ ਇਸਟ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੇਖੁ ਬਾਂਧਵਹ ॥

maayaa chit bharamen isatt mitrekh baandhavah |

The consciousness wanders lost in Maya, attached to friends and relatives.

ਲਬਧੵੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖ ਅਸਥਾਨੰ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਭਜਣੰ ॥੪॥

labadhayan saadh sangen naanak sukh asathaanan gopaal bhajanan |4|

Vibrating and meditating on the Lord of the Universe in the Saadh Sangat, O Nanak, the eternal place of rest is found. ||4||

ਮੈਲਾਗਰ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਨਿੰਮੁ ਬਿਰਖ ਸਿ ਚੰਦਨਹ ॥

mailaagar sangen ninm birakh si chandanah |

The lowly nim tree, growing near the sandalwood tree, becomes just like the sandalwood tree.

ਨਿਕਟਿ ਬਸੰਤੋ ਬਾਂਸੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਹੰ ਬੁਧਿ ਨ ਬੋਹਤੇ ॥੫॥

nikatt basanto baanso naanak ahan budh na bohate |5|

But the bamboo tree, also growing near it, does not pick up its fragrance; it is too tall and proud. ||5||

ਗਾਥਾ ਗੁੰਫ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਕਥੰ ਮਥੰ ਮਾਨ ਮਰਦਨਹ ॥

gaathaa gunf gopaal kathan mathan maan maradanah |

In this Gaat'haa, the Lord's Sermon is woven; listening to it, pride is crushed.

ਹਤੰ ਪੰਚ ਸਤ੍ਰੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਬਾਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰਣਹ ॥੬॥

hatan panch satren naanak har baane prahaaranah |6|

The five enemies are killed, O Nanak, by shooting the Arrow of the Lord. ||6||

ਬਚਨ ਸਾਧ ਸੁਖ ਪੰਥਾ ਲਹੰਥਾ ਬਡ ਕਰਮਣਹ ॥

bachan saadh sukh panthaa lahanthaa badd karamanah |

The Words of the Holy are the path of peace. They are obtained by good karma.

ਰਹੰਤਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣੇਨ ਰਮਣੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨਹ ॥੭॥

rahantaa janam maranen ramanan naanak har keeratanah |7|

The cycle of birth and death is ended, O Nanak, singing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises. ||7||

ਪਤ੍ਰ ਭੁਰਿਜੇਣ ਝੜੀਯੰ ਨਹ ਜੜੀਅੰ ਪੇਡ ਸੰਪਤਾ ॥

patr bhurijen jharreeyan neh jarreean pedd sanpataa |

When the leaves wither and fall, they cannot be attached to the branch again.

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਣ ਬਿਖਮਤਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਹੰਤਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਬਾਸਰੋ ਰੈਣੀ ॥੮॥

naam bihoon bikhamataa naanak bahant jon baasaro rainee |8|

Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, O Nanak, there is misery and suffering. The mortal wanders in reincarnation day and night. ||8||

ਭਾਵਨੀ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਲਭੰਤੰ ਬਡ ਭਾਗਣਹ ॥

bhaavanee saadh sangen labhantan badd bhaaganah |

One is blessed with love for the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, by great good fortune.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਰਮਣੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਨਹ ਬਿਆਪਣਹ ॥੯॥

har naam gun ramanan naanak sansaar saagar neh biaapanah |9|

Whoever sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord's Name, O Nanak, is not affected by the world-ocean. ||9||

ਗਾਥਾ ਗੂੜ ਅਪਾਰੰ ਸਮਝਣੰ ਬਿਰਲਾ ਜਨਹ ॥

gaathaa goorr apaaran samajhanan biralaa janah |

This Gaat'haa is profound and infinite; how rare are those who understand it.

ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕਾਮ ਤਜਣੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਰਮਣੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਮਹ ॥੧੦॥

sansaar kaam tajanan naanak gobind ramanan saadh sangamah |10|

They forsake sexual desire and worldly love, O Nanak, and praise the Lord in the Saadh Sangat. ||10||

ਸੁਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਸਾਧ ਬਚਨਾ ਕੋਟਿ ਦੋਖ ਬਿਨਾਸਨਹ ॥

sumantr saadh bachanaa kott dokh binaasanah |

The Words of the Holy are the most sublime Mantra. They eradicate millions of sinful mistakes.

ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਧੵਾਨੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੁਲ ਸਮੂਹ ਉਧਾਰਣਹ ॥੧੧॥

har charan kamal dhayaanan naanak kul samooh udhaaranah |11|

Meditating on the Lotus Feet of the Lord, O Nanak, all one's generations are saved. ||11||

ਸੁੰਦਰ ਮੰਦਰ ਸੈਣਹ ਜੇਣ ਮਧੵ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨਹ ॥

sundar mandar sainah jen madhay har keeratanah |

That palace is beautiful, in which the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises are sung.

ਮੁਕਤੇ ਰਮਣ ਗੋਬਿੰਦਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਬਧੵੰ ਬਡ ਭਾਗਣਹ ॥੧੨॥

mukate raman gobindah naanak labadhayan badd bhaaganah |12|

Those who dwell on the Lord of the Universe are liberated. O Nanak, only the most fortunate are so blessed. ||12||

ਹਰਿ ਲਬਧੋ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਮਿਤੋ ॥

har labadho mitr sumito |

I have found the Lord, my Friend, my very Best Friend.

ਬਿਦਾਰਣ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਚਿਤੋ ॥

bidaaran kade na chito |

He shall never break my heart.

ਜਾ ਕਾ ਅਸਥਲੁ ਤੋਲੁ ਅਮਿਤੋ ॥

jaa kaa asathal tol amito |

His dwelling is eternal; His weight cannot be weighed.

ਸੋੁਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਖਾ ਜੀਅ ਸੰਗਿ ਕਿਤੋ ॥੧੩॥

souee naanak sakhaa jeea sang kito |13|

Nanak has made Him the Friend of his soul. ||13||

ਅਪਜਸੰ ਮਿਟੰਤ ਸਤ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਹ ॥ ਸਿਮਰਤਬੵ ਰਿਦੈ ਗੁਰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਣਹ ॥

apajasan mittant sat putrah | simaratabay ridai gur mantranah |

One's bad reputation is erased by a true son, Who meditates in his heart on the Guru's Mantra.

ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਅਚੁਤ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਤਾਰਣਹ ॥੧੪॥

preetam bhagavaan achut | naanak sansaar saagar taaranah |14|

The Beloved Eternal Lord God, O Nanak, carries us across the world-ocean. ||14||

ਮਰਣੰ ਬਿਸਰਣੰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦਹ ॥ ਜੀਵਣੰ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਧੵਾਵਣਹ ॥

maranan bisaranan gobindah | jeevanan har naam dhayaavanah |

It is death to forget the Lord of the Universe. It is life to meditate on the Name of the Lord.

ਲਭਣੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਣਹ ॥੧੫॥

labhanan saadh sangen | naanak har poorab likhanah |15|

The Lord is found in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, O Nanak, by pre-ordained destiny. ||15||

ਦਸਨ ਬਿਹੂਨ ਭੁਯੰਗੰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੰ ਗਾਰੁੜੀ ਨਿਵਾਰੰ ॥

dasan bihoon bhuyangan mantran gaarurree nivaaran |

The snake-charmer, by his spell, neutralizes the poison and leaves the snake without fangs.

ਬੵਾਧਿ ਉਪਾੜਣ ਸੰਤੰ ॥

bayaadh upaarran santan |

Just so, the Saints remove suffering;

ਨਾਨਕ ਲਬਧ ਕਰਮਣਹ ॥੧੬॥

naanak labadh karamanah |16|

O Nanak, they are found by good karma. ||16||

ਜਥ ਕਥ ਰਮਣੰ ਸਰਣੰ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਅਣਹ ॥

jath kath ramanan saranan sarabatr jeeanah |

The Lord is All-pervading everywhere; He gives Sanctuary to all living beings.

ਤਥ ਲਗਣੰ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਨਕ ॥ ਪਰਸਾਦੰ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸਨਹ ॥੧੭॥

tath laganan prem naanak | parasaadan gur darasanah |17|

The mind is touched by His Love, O Nanak, By Guru's Grace, and the Blessed Vision of His Darshan. ||17||

ਚਰਣਾਰਬਿੰਦ ਮਨ ਬਿਧੵੰ ॥ ਸਿਧੵੰ ਸਰਬ ਕੁਸਲਣਹ ॥

charanaarabind man bidhayan | sidhayan sarab kusalanah |

My mind is pierced through by the Lord's Lotus Feet. I am blessed with total happiness.

ਗਾਥਾ ਗਾਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਬੵੰ ਪਰਾ ਪੂਰਬਣਹ ॥੧੮॥

gaathaa gaavant naanak bhabayan paraa poorabanah |18|

Holy people have been singing this Gaat'haa, O Nanak, since the very beginning of time. ||18||

ਸੁਭ ਬਚਨ ਰਮਣੰ ਗਵਣੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਉਧਰਣਹ ॥

subh bachan ramanan gavanan saadh sangen udharanah |

Chanting and singing the Sublime Word of God in the Saadh Sangat, mortals are saved from the world-ocean.

ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਪੁਨਰਪਿ ਜਨਮ ਨ ਲਭੵਤੇ ॥੧੯॥

sansaar saagaran naanak punarap janam na labhayate |19|

O Nanak, they shall never again be consigned to reincarnation. ||19||

ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੀਚਾਰੰ ॥

bed puraan saasatr beechaaran |

People contemplate the Vedas, Puraanas and Shaastras.

ਏਕੰਕਾਰ ਨਾਮ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੰ ॥

ekankaar naam ur dhaaran |

But by enshrining in their hearts the Naam, the Name of the One and Only Creator of the Universe,

ਕੁਲਹ ਸਮੂਹ ਸਗਲ ਉਧਾਰੰ ॥

kulah samooh sagal udhaaran |

everyone can be saved.

ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋ ਤਾਰੰ ॥੨੦॥

baddabhaagee naanak ko taaran |20|

By great good fortune, O Nanak, a few cross over like this. ||20||

ਸਿਮਰਣੰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮੰ ਉਧਰਣੰ ਕੁਲ ਸਮੂਹਣਹ ॥

simaranan gobind naaman udharanan kul samoohanah |

Meditating in remembrance on the Naam, the Name of Lord of the Universe, all one's generations are saved.

ਲਬਧਿਅੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਭੇਟੰਤਿ ਦਰਸਨਹ ॥੨੧॥

labadhian saadh sangen naanak vaddabhaagee bhettant darasanah |21|

It is obtained in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. O Nanak, by great good fortune, the Blessed Vision of His Darshan is seen. ||21||

ਸਰਬ ਦੋਖ ਪਰੰਤਿਆਗੀ ਸਰਬ ਧਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੰਤਣਃ ॥

sarab dokh parantiaagee sarab dharam drirrantan: |

Abandon all your evil habits, and implant all Dharmic faith within.

ਲਬਧੇਣਿ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਿਖੵਣਃ ॥੨੨॥

labadhen saadh sangen naanak masatak likhayan: |22|

The Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is obtained, O Nanak, by those who have such destiny written upon their foreheads. ||22||

ਹੋਯੋ ਹੈ ਹੋਵੰਤੋ ਹਰਣ ਭਰਣ ਸੰਪੂਰਣਃ ॥

hoyo hai hovanto haran bharan sanpooran: |

God was, is, and shall always be. He sustains and destroys all.

ਸਾਧੂ ਸਤਮ ਜਾਣੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਾਰਣੰ ॥੨੩॥

saadhoo satam jaano naanak preet kaaranan |23|

Know that these Holy people are true, O Nanak; they are in love with the Lord. ||23||

ਸੁਖੇਣ ਬੈਣ ਰਤਨੰ ਰਚਨੰ ਕਸੁੰਭ ਰੰਗਣਃ ॥

sukhen bain ratanan rachanan kasunbh rangan: |

The mortal is engrossed in sweet words and transitory pleasures which shall soon fade away.

ਰੋਗ ਸੋਗ ਬਿਓਗੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਸੁਪਨਹ ॥੨੪॥

rog sog biogan naanak sukh na supanah |24|

Disease, sorrow and separation afflict him; O Nanak, he never finds peace, even in dreams. ||24||
