ਧਰਿਯੋ ਰੂਪ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੋ ਤਹਾ ਆਪੁਨ ਤੁਰਤਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥
dhariyo roop triy ko tahaa aapun turat muraar |
Murari (Vishnu) had veiled himself as a pretty woman,
ਛਲੀ ਛਿਨਿਕ ਮੋ ਛਲਿ ਗਯੋ ਜਿਤੇ ਹੁਤੇ ਅਸੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੨੬॥
chhalee chhinik mo chhal gayo jite hute asuraar |26|
And instantly beguiled the devils.(26)(1)

ਨਾਰਨੌਲ ਕੇ ਦੇਸ ਮੈ ਬਿਜੈ ਸਿੰਘ ਇਕ ਨਾਥ ॥

In the country of Narnaul, there lived a Raja known as Vijay Singh.
ਰੈਨਿ ਦਿਵਸ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ਰਹੈ ਫੂਲ ਮਤੀ ਕੇ ਸਾਥ ॥੧॥
rain divas ddaariyo rahai fool matee ke saath |1|
He used to spend most of the time lying down with Phool Mati.(1)
ਬਿਜੈ ਸਿੰਘ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਸਦਾ ਜਪਤ ਆਠਹੂੰ ਜਾਮ ॥
bijai singh jaa ko sadaa japat aatthahoon jaam |
The person, whom Vijay Singh revered all the eight watches of the day,
ਫੂਲਨ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਤੋਲਿਯੈ ਫੂਲ ਮਤੀ ਜਿਹ ਨਾਮ ॥੨॥
foolan ke sang toliyai fool matee jih naam |2|
Was Phool Mati, and she was like a bunch of flowers.(2)
ਬਿਜੈ ਸਿੰਘ ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਗਏ ਆਖੇਟਕ ਕੇ ਕਾਜ ॥
bijai singh ik din ge aakhettak ke kaaj |
One day Vijay Singh went out for the purpose of hunting,
ਭ੍ਰਮਰ ਕਲਾ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਲਖਿ ਰੀਝ ਰਹੇ ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ॥੩॥
bhramar kalaa ko roop lakh reejh rahe mahaaraaj |3|
There he came across one Bharam Kala and he felt an ardent desire for her.(3)

ਤਹ ਹੀ ਬ︀ਯਾਹ ਧਾਮ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਆਨੀ ॥

ਰਾਵ ਹੇਰਿ ਸੋਊ ਲਲਚਾਨੀ ॥
raav her soaoo lalachaanee |
Be married her and brought her home, as she had fat :n for Raja too.
ਫੂਲ ਮਤੀ ਸੁਨਿ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਿਸਾਈ ॥
fool matee sun adhik risaaee |
ਆਦਰ ਸੋ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਲ︀ਯਾਈ ॥੪॥
aadar so taa ko grih layaaee |4|
On learning this, Phool Mati became angry but received her honourably.(4)
ਤਾ ਸੌ ਅਧਿਕ ਨੇਹ ਉਪਜਾਯੋ ॥
taa sau adhik neh upajaayo |
ਧਰਮ ਭਗਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਬੁਲਾਯੋ ॥
dharam bhagan kar taeh bulaayo |
She gave her intense love and called her as her righteous-sister.
ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਅਧਿਕ ਕੋਪ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਧਰਿਯੋ ॥
chit mai adhik kop triy dhariyo |
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਨਾਸ ਘਾਤ ਅਟਕਰਿਯੋ ॥੫॥
taa kee naas ghaat attakariyo |5|
Internally she was furious and had decided to annihilate her.(5)
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਉਪਾਸਿਕ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
jaa kee triyaa upaasik jaanee |
ਵਹੈ ਘਾਤ ਚੀਨਤ ਭੀ ਰਾਨੀ ॥
vahai ghaat cheenat bhee raanee |
The one she revered, she made up her mind to terminate.
ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਦੇਹਰੋ ਏਕ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥
rudr deharo ek banaayo |
ਜਾ ਪਰ ਅਗਨਿਤ ਦਰਬ ਲਗਾਯੋ ॥੬॥
jaa par aganit darab lagaayo |6|
Spending a lot of money she got a temple of Shiv a buill up.(6)
ਦੋਊ ਸਵਤਿ ਤਹਾ ਚਲਿ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
doaoo savat tahaa chal jaavai |
ਪੂਜਿ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਕੌ ਪੁਨਿ ਘਰ ਆਵੈ ॥
pooj rudr kau pun ghar aavai |
Both the co-wives went there and v’orshipped Shiva.
ਮਟ ਆਛੋ ਊਚੋ ਧੁਜ ਸੋਹੈ ॥
matt aachho aoocho dhuj sohai |
ਸੁਰ ਨਰ ਨਾਗ ਅਸੁਰ ਮਨ ਮੋਹੈ ॥੭॥
sur nar naag asur man mohai |7|
The pinnacle of the temple was quite high and it was appreciated by the gods, devils and all othds.(7)

ਪੁਰ ਬਾਸਨਿ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੈ ਤਿਹ ਠਾ ਕਰੈ ਪਯਾਨ ॥
pur baasan sundar sabhai tih tthaa karai payaan |
All the ladies of the town went to that temple,
ਮਹਾ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਕੌ ਪੂਜਿ ਕੈ ਬਹੁਰ ਬਸੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਆਨਿ ॥੮॥
mahaa rudr kau pooj kai bahur basai grih aan |8|
And returned to their households after idolising Shiva.(8)

ਏਕ ਦਿਵਸ ਰਾਨੀ ਲੈ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਤਹ ਗਈ ॥

ਨਿਜੁ ਕਰਿ ਅਸਿ ਗਹਿ ਵਾਹਿ ਮੂੰਡ ਕਾਟਤ ਭਈ ॥
nij kar as geh vaeh moondd kaattat bhee |
One day the Rani took her there, brandishing a sword in her hand, she cut her head off.
ਸੀਸ ਕਾਟਿ ਸਿਵ ਊਪਰ ਦਯੋ ਚਰਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
sees kaatt siv aoopar dayo charaae kai |
ਹੋ ਰੋਵਤ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਆਪੁ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ਆਇ ਕੈ ॥੯॥
ho rovat nrip prat aap uchaariyo aae kai |9|
The cut-off head, she presented to Shiva, and, herself, she came and told the Raja.

ਧਰਮ ਭਗਨਿ ਮੁਹਿ ਸੰਗ ਲੈ ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਦੇਹਰੇ ਜਾਇ ॥

‘The righteous-sister has taken me to the temple,
ਮੂੰਡ ਕਾਟਿ ਨਿਜੁ ਕਰ ਅਸਹਿ ਹਰ ਪਰ ਦਿਯੋ ਚਰਾਇ ॥੧੦॥
moondd kaatt nij kar aseh har par diyo charaae |10|
‘And there she cut her head and presented to Shiva.’(10)

ਯੌ ਸੁਨਿ ਬਾਤ ਤਹਾ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਆਯੋ ॥

ਜਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਤੌਨ ਨਾਰਿ ਕੌ ਘਾਯੋ ॥
jeh triy tauan naar kau ghaayo |
Learning this, the Raja came to the place where her severed head was lying.
ਤਾਹਿ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ਚਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਚਿਤ ਰਹਿਯੋ ॥
taeh nihaar chakrit chit rahiyo |
ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੋ ਕਛੁਕ ਬੈਨ ਨ ਕਹਿਯੋ ॥੧੧॥
triy ko kachhuk bain na kahiyo |11|
He was astcnished but he did not dispute the woman.(11)

ਮੂੰਡ ਕਾਟਿ ਜਿਨ ਨਿਜੁ ਕਰਨ ਹਰ ਪਰ ਦਿਯੋ ਚਰਾਇ ॥
moondd kaatt jin nij karan har par diyo charaae |
(He said,) ‘The woman, who has cut her head off, and, with her own hands, has presented to Shiva,
ਧੰਨ︀ਯੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਧੰਨਿ ਦੇਸ ਤਿਹ ਧੰਨ︀ਯ ਪਿਤਾ ਧੰਨਿ ਮਾਇ ॥੧੨॥
dhanayo triyaa dhan des tih dhanay pitaa dhan maae |12|
‘She and her parents are worthy ofhonours.’(12)
ਦਾਹ ਦਿਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਨਾਰਿ ਕੌ ਚਿਤ ਅਤਿ ਸੋਕ ਬਢਾਇ ॥
daah diyo tih naar kau chit at sok badtaae |
With intense tribulations, he cremated her
ਫੂਲ ਮਤੀ ਕੇ ਭਵਨ ਮੈ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਸਤ ਭਯੋ ਆਇ ॥੧੩॥
fool matee ke bhavan mai bahur basat bhayo aae |13|
and then came over to the palace of Phool Mati.(13)
ਸਵਤਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਨਿਜੁ ਕਰਨ ਸੌ ਔਰ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਹਿ ਦਿਖਰਾਇ ॥
savat maar nij karan sau aauar nripeh dikharaae |
By killing the co-wife, and showing her to the Raja,
ਰਾਜਾ ਕੌ ਨਿਜੁ ਬਸ ਕਿਯੋ ਐਸੋ ਚਰਿਤ ਬਨਾਇ ॥੧੪॥
raajaa kau nij bas kiyo aiso charit banaae |14|
With deception, she had won the favour ofthe sovereign.(14)
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬਿਸਨ ਸਰ ਅਸੁਰ ਸਭ ਰੈਨਾਧਿਪ ਦਿਨਰਾਇ ॥
braham bisan sar asur sabh rainaadhip dinaraae |
Brahma, Vishnu, the gods, the devils, the Sun, the Moon,
ਬੇਦ ਬ︀ਯਾਸ ਅਰੁ ਬੇਦ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਭੇਦ ਸਕੇ ਨਹਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੧੫॥
bed bayaas ar bed triy bhed sake neh paae |15|
The sage Viyas, and them all, could not fathom the females.(15)(1)

ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik oankaar sat naam karataa purakh nirbhau niravair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhan gur prasaad |
One Universal Creator God. Truth Is The Name. Creative Being Personified. No Fear. No Hatred. Image Of The Undying. Beyond Birth. Self-Existent. By Guru's Grace:
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
anik jatan kar rahe har ant naahee paaeaa |
Countless have tried, but none have found the Lord's limit.
ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਧਿ ਬੋਧਿ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har agam agam agaadh bodh aades har prabh raaeaa |1| rahaau |
The Lord is inaccessible, unapproachable and unfathomable; I humbly bow to the Lord God, my King. ||1||Pause||
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਝਗਰਤੇ ਝਗਰਾਇਆ ॥
kaam krodh lobh mohu nit jhagarate jhagaraaeaa |
Sexual desire, anger, greed and emotional attachment bring continual conflict and strife.
ਹਮ ਰਾਖੁ ਰਾਖੁ ਦੀਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥
ham raakh raakh deen tere har saran har prabh aaeaa |1|
Save me, save me, I am your humble creature, O Lord; I have come to Your Sanctuary, O my Lord God. ||1||
ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਲਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਨਾਇਆ ॥
saranaagatee prabh paalate har bhagat vachhal naaeaa |
You protect and preserve those who take to Your Sanctuary, God; You are called the Lover of Your devotees.
ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦੁ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਨਾਖਿ ਪਕਰਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਓ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
prahilaad jan haranaakh pakariaa har raakh leeo taraaeaa |2|
Prahlaad, Your humble servant, was caught by Harnaakhash; but You saved Him and carried him across, Lord. ||2||
ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤਿ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਵਣ ਸਭ ਦੂਖ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਰਾਇਆ ॥
har chet re man mehal paavan sabh dookh bhanjan raaeaa |
Remember the Lord, O mind, and rise up to the Mansion of His Presence; the Sovereign Lord is the Destroyer of pain.
ਭਉ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
bhau janam maran nivaar tthaakur har guramatee prabh paaeaa |3|
Our Lord and Master takes away the fear of birth and death; following the Guru's Teachings, the Lord God is found. ||3||
ਹਰਿ ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਭਉ ਭਗਤ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਗਾਇਆ ॥
har patit paavan naam suaamee bhau bhagat bhanjan gaaeaa |
The Name of the Lord, our Lord and Master, is the Purifier of sinners; I sing of the Lord, the Destroyer of the fears of His devotees.
ਹਰਿ ਹਾਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿਓ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧॥
har haar har ur dhaario jan naanak naam samaaeaa |4|1|
One who wears the necklace of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in his heart, O servant Nanak, merges in the Naam. ||4||1||
ਮਾਲੀ ਗਉੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥

Maalee Gauraa, Fourth Mehl:
ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥
jap man raam naam sukhadaataa |
O my mind, chant the Name of the Lord, the Giver of peace.
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਦੁ ਆਇਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
satasangat mil har saad aaeaa guramukh braham pachhaataa |1| rahaau |
One who joins the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, and enjoys the sublime taste of the Lord, as Gurmukh, comes to realize God. ||1||Pause||
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
vaddabhaagee gur darasan paaeaa gur miliai har prabh jaataa |
By great good fortune, one obtains the Blessed Vision of the Guru's Darshan; meeting with the Guru, the Lord God is known.
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਗਈ ਸਭ ਨੀਕਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਤਾ ॥੧॥
duramat mail gee sabh neekar har amrit har sar naataa |1|
The filth of evil-mindedness is totally washed away, bathing in the Lord's ambrosial pool of nectar. ||1||
ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਾਧ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਿਨੑ ਪੂਛਉ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਬਾਤਾ ॥
dhan dhan saadh jinaee har prabh paaeaa tina poochhau har kee baataa |
Blessed, blessed are the Holy, who have found their Lord God; I ask them to tell me the stories of the Lord.
ਪਾਇ ਲਗਉ ਨਿਤ ਕਰਉ ਜੁਦਰੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਕਰਮਿ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥੨॥
paae lgau nit krau judareea har melahu karam bidhaataa |2|
I fall at their feet, and always pray to them, to mercifully unite me with my Lord, the Architect of Destiny. ||2||
ਲਿਲਾਟ ਲਿਖੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
lilaatt likhe paaeaa gur saadhoo gur bachanee man tan raataa |
Through the destiny written on my forehead, I have found the Holy Guru; my mind and body are imbued with the Guru's Word.
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਇ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਭ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਪਾਪ ਗਵਾਤਾ ॥੩॥
har prabh aae mile sukh paaeaa sabh kilavikh paap gavaataa |3|
The Lord God has come to meet me; I have found peace, and I am rid of all the sins. ||3||
ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਜਿਨੑ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਿਨੑ ਕੀ ਊਤਮ ਬਾਤਾ ॥
raam rasaaein jina guramat paaeaa tina kee aootam baataa |
Those who follow the Guru's Teachings find the Lord, the source of nectar; their words are sublime and exalted.
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਪੰਕ ਪਾਈਐ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਚਰਨਿ ਪਰਾਤਾ ॥੪॥੨॥
tin kee pank paaeeai vaddabhaagee jan naanak charan paraataa |4|2|
By great good fortune, one is blessed with the dust of their feet; servant Nanak falls at their feet. ||4||2||
