ਸੁੰਭ ਨਿਸੁੰਭ ਹਨਿਓ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਬਰ ਬੀਰਨ ਕੇ ਚਿਤਿ ਛੋਭ ਸਮਾਇਓ ॥
sunbh nisunbh hanio sun kai bar beeran ke chit chhobh samaaeo |
When Sumbh heard about the death of Nisumbh, the anger of that mighty warrior knew no bounds.,
ਸਾਜਿ ਚੜਿਓ ਗਜ ਬਾਜ ਸਮਾਜ ਕੈ ਦਾਨਵ ਪੁੰਜ ਲੀਏ ਰਨ ਆਇਓ ॥
saaj charrio gaj baaj samaaj kai daanav punj lee ran aaeo |
Filled with great fury, he bedecked all the paraphernalia of elephants and horses, and taking the divisions of his army, he entered the battlefield.,
ਭੂਮਿ ਭਇਆਨਕ ਲੋਥ ਪਰੀ ਲਖਿ ਸ੍ਰਉਨ ਸਮੂਹ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਸਮਾਇਓ ॥
bhoom bheaanak loth paree lakh sraun samooh mahaa bisamaaeo |
In that frightening field, seeing the corpses and the amassed blood, he was greatly astonished.,
ਮਾਨਹੁ ਸਾਰਸੁਤੀ ਉਮਡੀ ਜਲੁ ਸਾਗਰ ਕੇ ਮਿਲਿਬੇ ਕਹੁ ਧਾਇਓ ॥੨੦੫॥
maanahu saarasutee umaddee jal saagar ke milibe kahu dhaaeo |205|
It seemed that the surging Saraswati is running to meet the ocean.205.,
ਚੰਡ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡਿ ਸੁ ਕੇਹਰਿ ਕਾਲਿਕਾ ਅਉ ਸਕਤੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੁਧ ਕਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥
chandd prachandd su kehar kaalikaa aau sakatee mil judh kario hai |
The fierce Chandi, Lion Kalika other powers have waged a violent war together.,
ਦਾਨਵ ਸੈਨ ਹਤੀ ਇਨਹੂੰ ਸਭ ਇਉ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਪ ਭਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥
daanav sain hatee inahoon sabh iau keh kai man kop bhario hai |
“They have killed all the army of the demons,” saying this the mind of Sumbh was filled with rage.,
ਬੰਧੁ ਕਬੰਧ ਪਰਿਓ ਅਵਲੋਕ ਕੈ ਸੋਕ ਕੈ ਪਾਇ ਨ ਆਗੈ ਧਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥
bandh kabandh pario avalok kai sok kai paae na aagai dhario hai |
Seeing the trunk of the body of his brother on one side, and in deep sorrow he could not move a step forward.,
ਧਾਇ ਸਕਿਓ ਨ ਭਇਓ ਭਇ ਭੀਤਹ ਚੀਤਹ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਲੰਗੁ ਪਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥੨੦੬॥
dhaae sakio na bheo bhe bheetah cheetah maanahu lang pario hai |206|
He was so much frightened that he could not speedily go forward, it seemed that the leopard had become lame.206.
ਫੇਰਿ ਕਹਿਓ ਦਲ ਕੋ ਜਬ ਸੁੰਭ ਸੁ ਮਾਨਿ ਚਲੇ ਤਬ ਦੈਤ ਘਨੇ ॥

When Sumbh commanded his army, many demons marched forward, obeying the orders.,
ਗਜਰਾਜ ਸੁ ਬਾਜਨ ਕੇ ਅਸਵਾਰ ਰਥੀ ਰਥੁ ਪਾਇਕ ਕਉਨ ਗਨੈ ॥
gajaraaj su baajan ke asavaar rathee rath paaeik kaun ganai |
Who could count the riders of great elephants and horses, the chariots, warriors on chariots and warriors on foot?,
ਤਹਾ ਘੇਰ ਲਈ ਚਹੂੰ ਓਰ ਤੇ ਚੰਡਿ ਮਹਾ ਤਨ ਕੇ ਤਨ ਦੀਹ ਬਨੈ ॥

mano bhaan ko chhaae leo umaddai ghan ghor ghamandd ghattaan sanai |207|
It seemed that the overflowing proud and thundering dark clouds have enshrouded the sun.207.,

ਚਹੂੰ ਓਰਿ ਘੇਰੋ ਪਰਿਓ ਤਬੈ ਚੰਡ ਇਹ ਕੀਨ ॥

When Chadi was besieged from all the four sides, she did this:,
ਕਾਲੀ ਸੋ ਹਸਿ ਤਿਨ ਕਹੀ ਨੈਨ ਸੈਨ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨ ॥੨੦੮॥
kaalee so has tin kahee nain sain kar deen |208|
She laughed and said to Kali, also hinting with her eyes.208.,

ਕੇਤੇ ਮਾਰਿ ਡਾਰੇ ਅਉ ਕੇਤਕ ਚਬਾਇ ਡਾਰੇ ਕੇਤਕ ਬਗਾਇ ਡਾਰੇ ਕਾਲੀ ਕੋਪ ਤਬ ਹੀ ॥
kete maar ddaare aau ketak chabaae ddaare ketak bagaae ddaare kaalee kop tab hee |
When Chandi hinted to Kali, she killed many, chewed many and threw many far away, in great rage.,
ਬਾਜ ਗਜ ਭਾਰੇ ਤੇ ਤੋ ਨਖਨ ਸੋ ਫਾਰਿ ਡਾਰੇ ਐਸੇ ਰਨ ਭੈਕਰ ਨ ਭਇਓ ਆਗੈ ਕਬ ਹੀ ॥
baaj gaj bhaare te to nakhan so faar ddaare aise ran bhaikar na bheo aagai kab hee |
She ripped with her nails, many big elephants and horses, such a war was waged that had not been waged before.
ਭਾਗੇ ਬਹੁ ਬੀਰ ਕਾਹੂੰ ਸੁਧ ਨ ਰਹੀ ਸਰੀਰ ਹਾਲ ਚਾਲ ਪਰੀ ਮਰੇ ਆਪਸ ਮੈ ਦਬ ਹੀ ॥
bhaage bahu beer kaahoon sudh na rahee sareer haal chaal paree mare aapas mai dab hee |
Many warriors ran away, none of them remained conscious about his body, there was so much uproar, and many of them died by mutual pressing.,
ਪੇਖਿ ਸੁਰ ਰਾਇ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਖ ਬਢਾਇ ਸੁਰ ਪੁੰਜਨ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਕਰੈ ਜੈਜੈਕਾਰ ਸਬ ਹੀ ॥੨੦੯॥
pekh sur raae man harakh badtaae sur punjan bulaae karai jaijaikaar sab hee |209|
Seeing the demon being killed, Indra, the king of gods, was very much pleased in his mind and calling all the groups of gods, he hailed the vicory.209.,
ਕ੍ਰੋਧਮਾਨ ਭਇਓ ਕਹਿਓ ਰਾਜਾ ਸਭ ਦੈਤਨ ਕੋ ਐਸੋ ਜੁਧੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਕਾਲੀ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ਬੀਰ ਮਾਰ ਕੈ ॥
krodhamaan bheo kahio raajaa sabh daitan ko aiso judh keeno kaalee ddaariyo beer maar kai |
The king Sumbh became very furious and told all the demons: “That kali hath waged she hath killed and thrown down my warriors.”,
ਬਲ ਕੋ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਨੀ ਕਰਵਾਰ ਢਾਰ ਪੈਠੋ ਰਨ ਮਧਿ ਮਾਰੁ ਮਾਰੁ ਇਉ ਉਚਾਰ ਕੈ ॥
bal ko sanbhaar kar leenee karavaar dtaar paittho ran madh maar maar iau uchaar kai |
Recouping his power, Sumbh held his sword and shield in his hands and shouting “Kill, Kill”, he entered the battlefield.,
ਸਾਥ ਭਏ ਸੁੰਭ ਕੇ ਸੁ ਮਹਾ ਬੀਰ ਧੀਰ ਜੋਧੇ ਲੀਨੇ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਆਪ ਆਪਨੇ ਸੰਭਾਰ ਕੈ ॥
saath bhe sunbh ke su mahaa beer dheer jodhe leene hathiaar aap aapane sanbhaar kai |
The great heroes and warriors of great composure, took their poser, accompanied Sumbh.,
ਐਸੇ ਚਲੇ ਦਾਨੋ ਰਵਿ ਮੰਡਲ ਛਪਾਨੋ ਮਾਨੋ ਸਲਭ ਉਡਾਨੋ ਪੁੰਜ ਪੰਖਨ ਸੁ ਧਾਰ ਕੈ ॥੨੧੦॥
aise chale daano rav manddal chhapaano maano salabh uddaano punj pankhan su dhaar kai |210|
The demons marched like the flying locust swarms in order to enshroud the sun.210.,

ਦਾਨਵ ਸੈਨ ਲਖੈ ਬਲਵਾਨ ਸੁ ਬਾਹਨਿ ਚੰਡਿ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡ ਭ੍ਰਮਾਨੋ ॥
daanav sain lakhai balavaan su baahan chandd prachandd bhramaano |
Seeing the powerful forces of the demons, Chandi revolved the lion’s face swiftly.,
ਚਕ੍ਰ ਅਲਾਤ ਕੀ ਬਾਤ ਬਘੂਰਨ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀ ਸਮ ਅਉ ਖਰਸਾਨੋ ॥
chakr alaat kee baat baghooran chhatr nahee sam aau kharasaano |
Even the disc, wind, canopy nd grindstone cannot revolve so swiftly.,
ਤਾਰਿਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਸੁ ਐਸੋ ਫਿਰਿਓ ਜਨ ਭਉਰ ਨਹੀ ਸਰਤਾਹਿ ਬਖਾਨੋ ॥
taarin maeh su aiso firio jan bhaur nahee sarataeh bakhaano |
The lion hath revolved in that battlefield in such a way that even the whirlwind cannot compete with it.,
ਅਉਰ ਨਹੀ ਉਪਮਾ ਉਪਜੈ ਸੁ ਦੁਹੂੰ ਰੁਖ ਕੇਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਮੁਖ ਮਾਨੋ ॥੨੧੧॥
aaur nahee upamaa upajai su duhoon rukh kehar ke mukh maano |211|
The can be no other comparison except that the face of the lion may be considered on both the sides of his body.211.,
ਜੁਧੁ ਮਹਾ ਅਸੁਰੰਗਨਿ ਸਾਥਿ ਭਇਓ ਤਬ ਚੰਡਿ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡਹਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
judh mahaa asurangan saath bheo tab chandd prachanddeh bhaaree |
At that time the powerful Chandi had fought a great war with huge gathering of demons.,
ਸੈਨ ਅਪਾਰ ਹਕਾਰਿ ਸੁਧਾਰਿ ਬਿਦਾਰਿ ਸੰਘਾਰਿ ਦਈ ਰਨਿ ਕਾਰੀ ॥
sain apaar hakaar sudhaar bidaar sanghaar dee ran kaaree |
Challenging the unaccountable army, chastening and awakening it, Kali had destroyed it in the battlefield.,
ਖੇਤ ਭਇਓ ਤਹਾ ਚਾਰ ਸਉ ਕੋਸ ਲਉ ਸੋ ਉਪਮਾ ਕਵਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਬਿਚਾਰੀ ॥
khet bheo tahaa chaar sau kos lau so upamaa kav dekh bichaaree |
The war was fought there upto four hundred kos and the poet hath imagined it like this:,
ਪੂਰਨ ਏਕ ਘਰੀ ਨ ਪਰੀ ਜਿ ਗਿਰੇ ਧਰਿ ਪੈ ਥਰ ਜਿਉ ਪਤਝਾਰੀ ॥੨੧੨॥
pooran ek gharee na paree ji gire dhar pai thar jiau patajhaaree |212|
Only one ghari (small duration of time) was not complete, when the demons had fallen on the earth like the leaves (of trees) in autumn.212.,
ਮਾਰਿ ਚਮੂੰ ਚਤੁਰੰਗ ਲਈ ਤਬ ਲੀਨੋ ਹੈ ਸੁੰਭ ਚਮੁੰਡ ਕੋ ਆਗਾ ॥
maar chamoon chaturang lee tab leeno hai sunbh chamundd ko aagaa |
When all the four divisions of army were killed, Sumbh marched forward to obstruct the advance of Chandi.,
ਚਾਲ ਪਰਿਓ ਅਵਨੀ ਸਿਗਰੀ ਹਰ ਜੂ ਹਰਿ ਆਸਨ ਤੇ ਉਠਿ ਭਾਗਾ ॥
chaal pario avanee sigaree har joo har aasan te utth bhaagaa |
At that time the whole earth shook and Shiva rose and ran from his seat of contemplation.,
ਸੂਖ ਗਇਓ ਤ੍ਰਸ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਾਰਿ ਸੁ ਸੰਕਤਿ ਅੰਕ ਮਹਾ ਭਇਓ ਜਾਗਾ ॥
sookh geo tras kai har haar su sankat ank mahaa bheo jaagaa |
The necklace (snake) of Shiva’s throat had withered because of fear, it trembled because of great fear in his heart.,
ਲਾਗ ਰਹਿਓ ਲਪਟਾਇ ਗਰੇ ਮਧਿ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਮੁੰਡ ਕੀ ਮਾਲ ਕੋ ਤਾਗਾ ॥੨੧੩॥
laag rahio lapattaae gare madh maanahu mundd kee maal ko taagaa |213|
That snake clinging to Shiva’s throat appears like the string of the wreath of skulls.213.,
ਚੰਡਿ ਕੇ ਸਾਮੁਹਿ ਆਇ ਕੈ ਸੁੰਭ ਕਹਿਓ ਮੁਖਿ ਸੋ ਇਹ ਮੈ ਸਭ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
chandd ke saamuhi aae kai sunbh kahio mukh so ih mai sabh jaanee |
Coming in front of Chandi, the demon Sumbh uttered from his mouth: “I have come to know all this.,
ਕਾਲੀ ਸਮੇਤ ਸਭੈ ਸਕਤੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਦੀਨੋ ਖਪਾਇ ਸਭੈ ਦਲੁ ਬਾਨੀ ॥
kaalee samet sabhai sakatee mil deeno khapaae sabhai dal baanee |
“Alongwith Kali and other powers thou hast destroyed all the parts of my army.”,
ਚੰਡਿ ਕਹਿਓ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਉਨ ਕੋ ਤੇਊ ਤਾ ਛਿਨ ਗਉਰ ਕੇ ਮਧਿ ਸਮਾਨੀ ॥
chandd kahio mukh te un ko teaoo taa chhin gaur ke madh samaanee |
At that time Chandi uttered these words from her month to Kali and other powers: “Merge in me” and at the same instant they all merged in Chandi,
ਜਿਉ ਸਰਤਾ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਹ ਕੇ ਬੀਚ ਮਿਲੇ ਬਰਖਾ ਬਹੁ ਬੂੰਦਨ ਪਾਨੀ ॥੨੧੪॥
jiau sarataa ke pravaah ke beech mile barakhaa bahu boondan paanee |214|
Like the rain-water in the current of the steam.214.,
ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਚੰਡਿ ਮਹਾ ਰਨ ਮਧਿ ਸੁ ਲੈ ਜਮਦਾੜ ਕੀ ਤਾ ਪਰਿ ਲਾਈ ॥
kai bal chandd mahaa ran madh su lai jamadaarr kee taa par laaee |
In the war, Chnadi, taking the dagger, struck it with great force on the demon.,
ਬੈਠ ਗਈ ਅਰਿ ਕੇ ਉਰ ਮੈ ਤਿਹ ਸ੍ਰਉਨਤ ਜੁਗਨਿ ਪੂਰਿ ਅਘਾਈ ॥
baitth gee ar ke ur mai tih sraunat jugan poor aghaaee |
It penetrated into the breast of the enemy, the vamps were fully satisfied with his blood.
ਦੀਰਘ ਜੁਧ ਬਿਲੋਕ ਕੈ ਬੁਧਿ ਕਵੀਸ੍ਵਰ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਇਹ ਆਈ ॥
deeragh judh bilok kai budh kaveesvar ke man mai ih aaee |
Seeing that horrible war, the poet hath imagined it like this:,
ਲੋਥ ਪੈ ਲੋਥ ਗਈ ਪਰ ਇਉ ਸੁ ਮਨੋ ਸੁਰ ਲੋਗ ਕੀ ਸੀਢੀ ਬਨਾਈ ॥੨੧੫॥
loth pai loth gee par iau su mano sur log kee seedtee banaaee |215|
The corpses falling on one another seem like a ladder of heaven made by the warriors in the war.215.,
ਸੁੰਭ ਚਮੂੰ ਸੰਗ ਚੰਡਿਕਾ ਕ੍ਰੁਧ ਕੈ ਜੁਧ ਅਨੇਕਨਿ ਵਾਰਿ ਮਚਿਓ ਹੈ ॥
sunbh chamoon sang chanddikaa krudh kai judh anekan vaar machio hai |
Chandi, with great rage, hath waged war several times with the forces of Sumbh.,
ਜੰਬੁਕ ਜੁਗਨਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਝ ਮਜੂਰ ਰਕਤ੍ਰ ਕੀ ਕੀਚ ਮੈ ਈਸ ਨਚਿਓ ਹੈ ॥
janbuk jugan grijh majoor rakatr kee keech mai ees nachio hai |
The jackals, vamps and vultures are like laborers and the dancer standing in the mud of flesh and blood is Shiva himself.,
ਲੁਥ ਪੈ ਲੁਥ ਸੁ ਭੀਤੈ ਭਈ ਸਿਤ ਗੂਦ ਅਉ ਮੇਦ ਲੈ ਤਾਹਿ ਗਚਿਓ ਹੈ ॥
luth pai luth su bheetai bhee sit good aau med lai taeh gachio hai |
The corpses upon corpses have become a wall and the fat and marrow are the plaster (on that wall).,
ਭਉਨ ਰੰਗੀਨ ਬਨਾਇ ਮਨੋ ਕਰਿਮਾਵਿਸੁ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਰਚਿਓ ਹੈ ॥੨੧੬॥
bhaun rangeen banaae mano karimaavis chitr bachitr rachio hai |216|
(This is not the battlefield) it appears that Vishwakarma, the builder of beautiful mansions, hath created this wonderful portrait. 216.,

ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਦਰਸਨ ਚਾਹੇ ॥

I have searched and searched, seeking the Blessed Vision of His Darshan.
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਨ ਬਨ ਅਵਗਾਹੇ ॥
bhaat bhaat ban ban avagaahe |
I travelled through all sorts of woods and forests.
ਨਿਰਗੁਣੁ ਸਰਗੁਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੈ ਜੀਉ ਆਣਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
niragun saragun har har meraa koee hai jeeo aan milaavai jeeo |1|
My Lord, Har, Har, is both absolute and related, unmanifest and manifest; is there anyone who can come and unite me with Him? ||1||
ਖਟੁ ਸਾਸਤ ਬਿਚਰਤ ਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨਾ ॥
khatt saasat bicharat mukh giaanaa |
People recite from memory the wisdom of the six schools of philosophy;
ਪੂਜਾ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਤੀਰਥ ਇਸਨਾਨਾ ॥
poojaa tilak teerath isanaanaa |
they perform worship services, wear ceremonial religious marks on their foreheads, and take ritual cleansing baths at sacred shrines of pilgrimage.
ਨਿਵਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਆਸਨ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਇਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥
nivalee karam aasan chauraaseeh in meh saant na aavai jeeo |2|
They perform the inner cleansing practice with water and adopt the eighty-four Yogic postures; but still, they find no peace in any of these. ||2||
ਅਨਿਕ ਬਰਖ ਕੀਏ ਜਪ ਤਾਪਾ ॥
anik barakh kee jap taapaa |
They chant and meditate, practicing austere self-discipline for years and years;
ਗਵਨੁ ਕੀਆ ਧਰਤੀ ਭਰਮਾਤਾ ॥
gavan keea dharatee bharamaataa |
they wander on journeys all over the earth;
ਇਕੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜੋਗੀ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਵੈ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
eik khin hiradai saant na aavai jogee bahurr bahurr utth dhaavai jeeo |3|
and yet, their hearts are not at peace, even for an instant. The Yogi rises up and goes out, over and over again. ||3||
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਾਧੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
kar kirapaa mohi saadh milaaeaa |
By His Mercy, I have met the Holy Saint.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
man tan seetal dheeraj paaeaa |
My mind and body have been cooled and soothed; I have been blessed with patience and composure.
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਬਸਿਆ ਘਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੫॥੧੨॥
prabh abinaasee basiaa ghatt bheetar har mangal naanak gaavai jeeo |4|5|12|
The Immortal Lord God has come to dwell within my heart. Nanak sings the songs of joy to the Lord. ||4||5||12||

ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥

He is Inaccessible, Incomprehensible, Invisible and Inscrutable.
ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਗੋਬਿੰਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਤੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
deen deaal gopaal gobindaa har dhiaavahu guramukh gaatee jeeo |1|
Merciful to the meek, Sustainer of the World, Lord of the Universe-meditating on the Lord, the Gurmukhs find salvation. ||1||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਧੁਸੂਦਨੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥
guramukh madhusoodan nisataare |
The Gurmukhs are emancipated by the Lord.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੰਗੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥
guramukh sangee krisan muraare |
The Lord Krishna becomes the Gurmukh's Companion.
ਦਇਆਲ ਦਮੋਦਰੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਕਿਤੈ ਨ ਭਾਤੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥
deaal damodar guramukh paaeeai horat kitai na bhaatee jeeo |2|
The Gurmukh finds the Merciful Lord. He is not found any other way. ||2||
ਨਿਰਹਾਰੀ ਕੇਸਵ ਨਿਰਵੈਰਾ ॥
nirahaaree kesav niravairaa |
He does not need to eat; His Hair is Wondrous and Beautiful; He is free of hate.
ਕੋਟਿ ਜਨਾ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਪੂਜਹਿ ਪੈਰਾ ॥
kott janaa jaa ke poojeh pairaa |
Millions of people worship His Feet.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਈ ਭਗਤੁ ਇਕਾਤੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
guramukh hiradai jaa kai har har soee bhagat ikaatee jeeo |3|
He alone is a devotee, who becomes Gurmukh, whose heart is filled with the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||
ਅਮੋਘ ਦਰਸਨ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
amogh darasan beant apaaraa |
Forever fruitful is the Blessed Vision of His Darshan; He is Infinite and Incomparable.
ਵਡ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਸਦਾ ਦਾਤਾਰਾ ॥
vadd samarath sadaa daataaraa |
He is Awesome and All-powerful; He is forever the Great Giver.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੀਐ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਰੀਐ ਗਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਰਲੀ ਜਾਤੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੬॥੧੩॥
guramukh naam japeeai tith tareeai gat naanak viralee jaatee jeeo |4|6|13|
As Gurmukh, chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and you shall be carried across. O Nanak, rare are those who know this state! ||4||6||13||
ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Maajh, Fifth Mehl:
ਕਹਿਆ ਕਰਣਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਲੈਣਾ ॥
kahiaa karanaa ditaa lainaa |
As You command, I obey; as You give, I receive.
ਗਰੀਬਾ ਅਨਾਥਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਮਾਣਾ ॥
gareebaa anaathaa teraa maanaa |
You are the Pride of the meek and the poor.
ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਉ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
sabh kichh toonhai toonhai mere piaare teree kudarat kau bal jaaee jeeo |1|
You are everything; You are my Beloved. I am a sacrifice to Your Creative Power. ||1||
ਭਾਣੈ ਉਝੜ ਭਾਣੈ ਰਾਹਾ ॥
bhaanai ujharr bhaanai raahaa |
By Your Will, we wander in the wilderness; by Your Will, we find the path.
ਭਾਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵਾਹਾ ॥
bhaanai har gun guramukh gaavaahaa |
By Your Will, we become Gurmukh and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਭਾਣੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭਵੈ ਬਹੁ ਜੂਨੀ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਰਜਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥
bhaanai bharam bhavai bahu joonee sabh kichh tisai rajaaee jeeo |2|
By Your Will, we wander in doubt through countless lifetimes. Everything happens by Your Will. ||2||
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥
naa ko moorakh naa ko siaanaa |
No one is foolish, and no one is clever.
ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਭਾਣਾ ॥
varatai sabh kichh teraa bhaanaa |
Your Will determines everything;
ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਅਥਾਹਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
agam agochar beant athaahaa teree keemat kehan na jaaee jeeo |3|
You are Inaccessible, Incomprehensible, Infinite and Unfathomable. Your Value cannot be expressed. ||3||
ਖਾਕੁ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਦੇਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
khaak santan kee dehu piaare |
Please bless me with the dust of the Saints, O my Beloved.
ਆਇ ਪਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਦੁਆਰੈ ॥
aae peaa har terai duaarai |
I have come and fallen at Your Door, O Lord.
ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪੇਖਤ ਮਨੁ ਆਘਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਸੁਭਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੭॥੧੪॥
darasan pekhat man aaghaavai naanak milan subhaaee jeeo |4|7|14|
Gazing upon the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, my mind is fulfilled. O Nanak, with natural ease, I merge into Him. ||4||7||14||
ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Maajh, Fifth Mehl:
ਦੁਖੁ ਤਦੇ ਜਾ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
dukh tade jaa visar jaavai |
They forget the Lord, and they suffer in pain.
ਭੁਖ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
bhukh viaapai bahu bidh dhaavai |
Afflicted with hunger, they run around in all directions.
ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
simarat naam sadaa suhelaa jis devai deen deaalaa jeeo |1|
Meditating in remembrance on the Naam, they are happy forever. The Lord, Merciful to the meek, bestows it upon them. ||1||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਵਡ ਸਮਰਥਾ ॥
satigur meraa vadd samarathaa |
My True Guru is absolutely All-powerful.
ਜੀਇ ਸਮਾਲੀ ਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਥਾ ॥
jee samaalee taa sabh dukh lathaa |
When I dwell upon Him in my soul, all my sorrows depart.
ਚਿੰਤਾ ਰੋਗੁ ਗਈ ਹਉ ਪੀੜਾ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥
chintaa rog gee hau peerraa aap kare pratipaalaa jeeo |2|
The sickness of anxiety and the disease of ego are cured; He Himself cherishes me. ||2||
ਬਾਰਿਕ ਵਾਂਗੀ ਹਉ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਮੰਗਾ ॥
baarik vaangee hau sabh kichh mangaa |
Like a child, I ask for everything.
ਦੇਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਰੰਗਾ ॥
dede tott naahee prabh rangaa |
God is Bountiful and Beautiful; He never comes up empty.
ਪੈਰੀ ਪੈ ਪੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਮਨਾਈ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
pairee pai pai bahut manaaee deen deaal gopaalaa jeeo |3|
Again and again, I fall at His Feet. He is Merciful to the meek, the Sustainer of the World. ||3||
ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ॥
hau balihaaree satigur poore |
I am a sacrifice to the Perfect True Guru,
ਜਿਨਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟੇ ਸਗਲੇ ਮੇਰੇ ॥
jin bandhan kaatte sagale mere |
who has shattered all my bonds.
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕੀਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਸਾਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੮॥੧੫॥
hiradai naam de niramal kee naanak rang rasaalaa jeeo |4|8|15|
With the Naam, the Name of the Lord, in my heart, I have been purified. O Nanak, His Love has imbued me with nectar. ||4||8||15||
