When thieves learned that she had lot of wealth at her house,

ਰੈਨਿ ਪਰੀ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਪਰੇ ਅਮਿਤ ਮਸਾਲੈ ਜਾਰਿ ॥੩॥

rain paree taa ke pare amit masaalai jaar |3|

They took torches and headed towards her house.(3)

When she saw the thieves coming, she said,

ਸੁਨੁ ਤਸਕਰ ਮੈ ਨਾਰਿ ਤਿਹਾਰੀ ॥

sun tasakar mai naar tihaaree |

ਅਪਨੀ ਜਾਨ ਕਰਹੁ ਰਖਵਾਰੀ ॥੪॥

apanee jaan karahu rakhavaaree |4|

‘Listen, you, I am your woman, and considering as your own, protect me.(4)

‘You can steel everything from the house and take me with you as weIl,

ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕੇ ਰੈਨਿ ਦਿਨ ਮੋ ਸੌ ਕੇਲ ਕਮਾਹੁ ॥੫॥

bhaat bhaat ke rain din mo sau kel kamaahu |5|

‘And, in numerous ways, enjoy with me.(5)

ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਧਾਮ ਕੋ ਭੋਜਨ ਕਰਹੁ ਬਨਾਇ ॥

pratham hamaare dhaam ko bhojan karahu banaae |

‘First I will prepare meals for you in my house,

ਪਾਛੇ ਮੁਹਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਇਯਹੁ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਹਰਖ ਉਪਜਾਇ ॥੬॥

paachhe muhi lai jaaeiyahu hridai harakh upajaae |6|

‘And then take me with you and savour me heart fully’.(6)

The thieves thought that she was right, she was their own.

ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਭਛ ਕੈ ਹਮਹਿ ਖਵਾਵਹੁ ॥

pratham bhachh kai hameh khavaavahu |

ਤਾ ਪਾਛੇ ਮੁਰਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਕਹਾਵਹੁ ॥੭॥

taa paachhe mur naar kahaavahu |7|

‘First we have meals and then let her become our woman.’(7)

The woman sent the thieves to upstairs,

ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਹੀ ਚਾਰਿ ਕੈ ਲੀਨੇ ਬਰੇ ਪਕਾਇ ॥੮॥

aap karaahee chaar kai leene bare pakaae |8|

And herself, putting the saucepan on fire, commenced cooking.(8)

She, then settled down to prepare the meal and put poison in that.(9)

With poison in she presented meal to the thieves,

ਨਿਕਸਿ ਆਪਿ ਆਵਤ ਭਈ ਤਾਲੋ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ ਕਰਿ ਲਾਇ ॥੧੦॥

nikas aap aavat bhee taalo drirr kar laae |10|

And herself locked the door and came down.(10)

ਬੈਠੀ ਆਪਿ ਤੇਲ ਅਵਟਾਵੈ ॥੧੧॥

She gave him pleasure through her talks while she put oil (on fire) to boil.(11)

tel jabai taato bhayo taa kee drisatt bachaae |

When the oil was hot enough, with stealthy looks,

ਡਾਰਿ ਸੀਸ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਦਯੋ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ਚੋਰ ਜਰਾਇ ॥੧੨॥

ddaar sees taa ke dayo maariyo chor jaraae |12|

She dumped it on his head and thus killed him.(12)

ਚੋਰ ਰਾਜ ਜਰਿ ਕੈ ਮਰਿਯੋ ਚੋਰ ਮਰਿਯੋ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥

chor raaj jar kai mariyo chor mariyo bikh khaae |

The leader of the thieves was killed with the boiling oil and others died of eating poison.

ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਭਏ ਕੁਟਵਾਰ ਕੇ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਦਏ ਬੰਧਾਇ ॥੧੩॥

praat bhe kuttavaar ke sabh hee de bandhaae |13|

In the morning she went and related the whole story to (he chief of the police.(l3)(1)

In. the North of the country, there lived a Raja who was very handsome.

ਛਤ੍ਰ ਕੇਤੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਮਾ ॥

ਨਿਰਖਿ ਥਕਿਤ ਰਹਈ ਜਿਹ ਬਾਮਾ ॥੧॥

His name was Chhattar Ket and, on seeing him, his wife always felt satiated.(1)

ਛਤ੍ਰ ਮੰਜਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਤਵਨ ਕੋ ॥

Her name was Chhattar Manjri; she was admired as the most beautiful.

ਭਵਨ ਚਤੁਰਦਸ ਮਾਝਿ ਉਜਿਯਾਰੀ ॥

bhavan chaturadas maajh ujiyaaree |

ਰਾਜਾ ਛਤ੍ਰਕੇਤੁ ਕੀ ਨਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

Raja Chhattar Ket’s wife was so well known that she was famous in all the ten regions.(2)

ਕੈਸੇ ਰਾਜ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਸਰੈ ॥੩॥

She always pondered over, how their rule could remain dynamic for ever,(3)

kanayaa hvai taa ke mar jaahee |

ਪੂਤ ਆਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੈ ਕੋਊ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

Because her female issues would not survive, and had no luck of a son.

She contemplated in her mind, ‘Not even God would approve me without a son,

ਦਿਜ ਮੁਰਿ ਹਾਥ ਦਾਨ ਨਹਿ ਲੇਹੀ ॥

dij mur haath daan neh lehee |

She contemplated in her mind, ‘Not even God would approve me without a son,

ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੇ ਲੋਗ ਉਰਾਭੇ ਦੇਹੀ ॥੫॥

‘And Brahmins (priests) would not accept alms through my hands and populace would taunt me.(5)

ਤਾ ਤੇ ਦੁਰਾਚਾਰ ਕਛੁ ਕਰਿਯੈ ॥

taa te duraachaar kachh kariyai |

ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਰਾਵ ਕੋ ਬਦਨ ਉਚਰਿਯੈ ॥

‘I should undertake some unworthy action and provide a son to the Raja.

ਏਕ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਲੀਜੈ ਉਪਜਾਈ ॥

ek putr leejai upajaaee |

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੋ ਕਵਨ ਨਿਰਖਿ ਹੈ ਆਈ ॥੬॥

nrip ko kavan nirakh hai aaee |6|

‘I must manage to get a boy when the Raja comes to visit me,’(6)

ਸਵਤਿ ਏਕ ਤਿਹ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਬੁਲਾਈ ॥

savat ek tih nripat bulaaee |

ਇਹ ਬ︀ਯਾਹਹੁ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਉਡਾਈ ॥

eih bayaahahu ih jagat uddaaee |

I sing of the sublime Lord, the Lord God, in the melody of Raag Bilaaval.

ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਭਾਗੁ ॥

aupades guroo sun maniaa dhur masatak pooraa bhaag |

Hearing the Guru's Teachings, I obey them; this is the pre-ordained destiny written upon my forehead.

ਸਭ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਉਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੁ ॥

sabh dinas rain gun ucharai har har har ur liv laag |

All day and night, I chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord, Har, Har, Har; within my heart, I am lovingly attuned to Him.

ਸਭੁ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਖਿੜਿਆ ਹਰਿਆ ਬਾਗੁ ॥

sabh tan man hariaa hoeaa man khirriaa hariaa baag |

My body and mind are totally rejuvenated, and the garden of my mind has blossomed forth in lush abundance.

ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਚਰਾਗੁ ॥

The darkness of ignorance has been dispelled, with the light of the lamp of the Guru's wisdom. Servant Nanak lives by beholding the Lord.

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜੀਵੈ ਦੇਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਘੜੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੁ ॥੧॥

jan naanak jeevai dekh har ik nimakh gharree mukh laag |1|

Let me behold Your face, for a moment, even an instant! ||1||

Be happy and sing in Bilaaval, when the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is in your mouth.

ਰਾਗ ਨਾਦ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਜਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥

raag naad sabad sohane jaa laagai sehaj dhiaan |

The melody and music, and the Word of the Shabad are beautiful, when one focuses his meditation on the celestial Lord.

ਰਾਗ ਨਾਦ ਛੋਡਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਤਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

raag naad chhodd har seveeai taa daragah paaeeai maan |

So leave behind the melody and music, and serve the Lord; then, you shall obtain honor in the Court of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਚੂਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥੨॥

naanak guramukh braham beechaareeai chookai man abhimaan |2|

O Nanak, as Gurmukh, contemplate God, and rid your mind of egotistical pride. ||2||

O Lord God, You Yourself are inaccessible; You formed everything.

ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥

too aape aap varatadaa sabh jagat sabaaeaa |

You Yourself are totally permeating and pervading the entire universe.

ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈਐ ਆਪੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥

tudh aape taarree laaeeai aape gun gaaeaa |

You Yourself are absorbed in the state of deep meditation; You Yourself sing Your Glorious Praises.

ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਭਗਤਹੁ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਲਏ ਛਡਾਇਆ ॥

har dhiaavahu bhagatahu dinas raat ant le chhaddaaeaa |

Meditate on the Lord, O devotees, day and night; He shall deliver you in the end.

ਜਿਨਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

jin seviaa tin sukh paaeaa har naam samaaeaa |1|

Those who serve the Lord, find peace; they are absorbed in the Name of the Lord. ||1||

doojai bhaae bilaaval na hovee manamukh thaae na paae |

In the love of duality, the happiness of Bilaaval does not come; the self-willed manmukh finds no place of rest.

ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

paakhandd bhagat na hovee paarabraham na paaeaa jaae |

Through hypocrisy, devotional worship does not come, and the Supreme Lord God is not found.

ਮਨਹਠਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਣੇ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਪਾਇ ॥

manahatth karam kamaavane thaae na koee paae |

By stubborn-mindedly performing religious rituals, no one obtains the approval of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥

naanak guramukh aap beechaareeai vichahu aap gavaae |

O Nanak, the Gurmukh understands himself, and eradicates self-conceit from within.

ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਹੈ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥

aape aap paarabraham hai paarabraham vasiaa man aae |

He Himself is the Supreme Lord God; the Supreme Lord God comes to dwell in his mind.

ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਕਟਿਆ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੧॥

jaman maranaa kattiaa jotee jot milaae |1|

Birth and death are erased, and his light blends with the Light. ||1||

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਟੀਐ ਸਚੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

janam maran dukh katteeai sache rahai samaae |

The pains of birth and death shall be eradicated, and you shall remain absorbed in the True Lord.

ਸਦਾ ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਚਲਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥

sadaa bilaaval anand hai je chaleh satigur bhaae |

You shall be blissful forever in Bilaaval, if you walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru.

ਸਤਸੰਗਤੀ ਬਹਿ ਭਾਉ ਕਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥

satasangatee beh bhaau kar sadaa har ke gun gaae |

Sitting in the Saints' Congregation, sing with love the Glorious Praises of the Lord forever.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੨॥

naanak se jan sohane ji guramukh mel milaae |2|

O Nanak, beautiful are those humble beings, who, as Gurmukh, are united in the Lord's Union. ||2||

ਸਭਨਾ ਜੀਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਸੋ ਭਗਤਾ ਕਾ ਮਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ॥

sabhanaa jeea vich har aap so bhagataa kaa mit har |

The Lord Himself is within all beings. The Lord is the friend of His devotees.

ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਭਗਤਾ ਕੈ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਘਰਿ ॥

sabh koee har kai vas bhagataa kai anand ghar |

Everyone is under the Lord's control; in the home of the devotees there is bliss.

ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਾ ਕਾ ਮੇਲੀ ਸਰਬਤ ਸਉ ਨਿਸੁਲ ਜਨ ਟੰਗ ਧਰਿ ॥

har bhagataa kaa melee sarabat sau nisul jan ttang dhar |

The Lord is the friend and companion of His devotees; all His humble servants stretch out and sleep in peace.

ਹਰਿ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਹੈ ਖਸਮੁ ਸੋ ਭਗਤ ਜਨ ਚਿਤਿ ਕਰਿ ॥

har sabhanaa kaa hai khasam so bhagat jan chit kar |

The Lord is the Lord and Master of all; O humble devotee, remember Him.

ਤੁਧੁ ਅਪੜਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਸਭ ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਪਵੈ ਝੜਿ ॥੨॥

tudh aparr koe na sakai sabh jhakh jhakh pavai jharr |2|

No one can equal You, Lord. Those who try, struggle and die in frustration. ||2||
