ਕਥਾ ਸਤ੍ਰਵੀ ਰਾਮ ਕਬਿ ਉਚਰੀ ਹਿਤ ਚਿਤ ਲਾਇ ॥
kathaa satravee raam kab ucharee hit chit laae |
With affection the Poet Ram envisaged the Chritar seventeen and,
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਬੰਧਨ ਨਿਮਿਤ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਉਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
bahur kathaa bandhan nimit man mai kahiyo upaae |1|
Then, determined to complete the narrative.(1)
ਧਾਮ ਨਿਕਟ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਹੁਤੀ ਹੋੜ ਬਦੀ ਜਿਹ ਨਾਰਿ ॥
dhaam nikatt taa ke hutee horr badee jih naar |
Other woman, with whom she had bet, lived near her house.
ਤਿਨਹੂੰ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਇਕ ਸੋ ਤੁਮ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਸੁਧਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
tinahoon kariyo charitr ik so tum sunahu sudhaar |2|
Now listen to her story with reformation.(2)

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਛਲਛਿਦ੍ਰ ਕੁਅਰਿ ਤਿਹ ਨਾਮਾ ॥
sree chhalachhidr kuar tih naamaa |
Her name was Chhalchhider (the deceptive) Kumari
ਦੂਜੇ ਰਹਤ ਮੁਗਲ ਕੀ ਬਾਮਾ ॥
dooje rehat mugal kee baamaa |
And she lived with the woman of another Mughal.
ਤਿਨ ਜੁ ਕਿਯਾ ਸੁ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਨਾਊ ॥
tin ju kiyaa su charitr sunaaoo |
What deceit she performed,
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਤੁਮਰੌ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਰਿਝਾਊ ॥੩॥
taa te tumarau hridai rijhaaoo |3|
Now I recount that to you to amuse You.(3)

ਏਕ ਦਿਵਸ ਤਿਨ ਮਿਹਦੀ ਲਈ ਮੰਗਾਇ ਕੈ ॥

One day she collected some henna-powder and, showing it off to
ਲੀਪਿ ਆਪਨੇ ਹਾਥ ਪਤਿਹਿ ਦਿਖਰਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
leep aapane haath patihi dikharaae kai |
Husband, put it on to tinge her hands with sensual henna-paste.
ਯਾਰਿ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਸੰਗ ਯੋ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੁਧਾਰਿ ਕੈ ॥
yaar doosare sang yo kahiyo sudhaar kai |
She had, politely, told her other (boy) friend that she would come to
ਹੋ ਐਹੋ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਤੀਰ ਤਿਹਾਰੇ ਪਯਾਰਿ ਕੈ ॥੪॥
ho aiho tumare teer tihaare payaar kai |4|
Him for making love, as well.( 4)

ਪਿਯ ਪ︀ਯਾਰੋ ਆਯੋ ਜਬ ਜਾਨ︀ਯੋ ॥

Realizing that her (boy) friend had come, she asked her (husband)
ਯਾਰ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਸੰਗ ਬਖਾਨ︀ਯੋ ॥
yaar doosare sang bakhaanayo |
Friend, ‘I wanted to go to urinate.
ਮੈ ਅਬ ਹੀ ਲਘੁ ਕੇ ਹਿਤ ਜੈਹੋ ॥
mai ab hee lagh ke hit jaiho |
‘When I come back you help me to tie my waist-band (because my
ਆਨਿ ਨਾਰ ਤਵ ਪਾਸ ਬਧੈਹੋ ॥੫॥
aan naar tav paas badhaiho |5|
Hands are smeared with henna-paste).(5)

ਨਾਰ ਖੁਲਾਯੋ ਜਾਰ ਤੇ ਗਈ ਜਾਰ ਕੇ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
naar khulaayo jaar te gee jaar ke paas |
She got the waistband untied by her first friend and went to the other one.
ਜਾਇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਰਮੀ ਰੰਚਕ ਕਿਯਾ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ॥੬॥
jaae nripat ke sang ramee ranchak kiyaa na traas |6|
And without fear indulged in love making with that regal paramour.(6)

When the benevolence of gold coins is available, who would accept the ones of base metal?
ਬਿਨੁ ਦੀਨੇ ਧਨ ਸਰੈ ਤ ਕੋ ਧਨ ਦੇਵਈ ॥
bin deene dhan sarai ta ko dhan devee |
If one abandons the opulence, why would one go after wealth?
ਧਨੀ ਤ︀ਯਾਗਿ ਨਿਰਧਨ ਕੇ ਕੋ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਜਾਵਈ ॥
dhanee tayaag niradhan ke ko grih jaavee |
Who would like to go to poor man’s house after leaving the richman?
ਹੋ ਰਾਵ ਤ︀ਯਾਗਿ ਕਰਿ ਰੰਕ ਕਵਨ ਚਿਤ ਲ︀ਯਾਵਈ ॥੭॥
ho raav tayaag kar rank kavan chit layaavee |7|
Who would remember the poor, forsaking the Raja aside?(7)

ਨੇਹ ਠਾਨਿ ਰਤਿ ਮਾਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਦਿਯਾ ਉਠਾਇ ॥
neh tthaan rat maan kar raajaa diyaa utthaae |
After making love with great satisfaction, she sent away the prince.
ਲਗੀ ਮਿਹਦੀਆ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਨਾਰ ਬਧਾਯੋ ਆਇ ॥੮॥
lagee mihadeea kar rahee naar badhaayo aae |8|
She came, with hands still besmeared in henna-paste, and asked the first lover to tie up the waist band.(8)
ਬੈਨ ਸੁਨਤ ਮੂਰਖ ਉਠਿਯੋ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਸਕ︀ਯੋ ਪਛਾਨਿ ॥
bain sunat moorakh utthiyo bhed na sakayo pachhaan |
Listening to her, the foolish lover came forward without understanding the secret.
ਬਾਧ੍ਰਯੋ ਬੰਦ ਇਜਾਰ ਕੌ ਅਧਿਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਨ ਮਾਨਿ ॥੯॥
baadhrayo band ijaar kau adhik preet man maan |9|
He, still with love for her in his heart, got up and tied the waist- band.(9)
ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕੈਸਿਯੈ ਤਨ ਬਢੈ ਕਸਟ ਕੈਸਹੂ ਹੋਇ ॥

Howsoever you may be in love, and you may be in love-sickness,
ਤਊ ਤਰੁਨਿ ਸੌ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਭੂਲਿ ਨ ਕਰਿਯਹੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੧੦॥
taoo tarun sau dosatee bhool na kariyahu koe |10|
You should not fall in love with a young woman.(10)(1)

The Raja had sent his son to the jail
ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਸਮੈ ਪੁਨਿ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਬੁਲਾਯੋ ॥
praat samai pun nikatt bulaayo |
And in the morning he called him back.
ਬਹੁਰੌ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਕਥਾ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
bahurau mantree kathaa uchaariyo |
Then the Minister narrated a parable
ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੋ ਭਰਮੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧॥
chitr singh ko bharam nivaariyo |1|
And removed Chiter Singh’s apprehension.(1)

ਸਾਹਜਹਾਨਾਬਾਦ ਮੈ ਏਕ ਮੁਗਲ ਕੀ ਬਾਲ ॥

Now, my Raja, listen to what a charm was shown
ਤਾ ਸੋ ਕਿਯਾ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਇਕ ਸੋ ਤੁਮ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ॥੨॥
taa so kiyaa charitr ik so tum sunahu nripaal |2|
By the wife a Mughal living in Shahjehanbad.(2)

ਤਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਦਰਾ ਬਾਨੋ ॥
taa ko naam naadaraa baano |
Her name was Naadira Bano
ਅਮਿਤ ਰੂਪ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਜਗ ਜਾਨੋ ॥
amit roop taa ko jag jaano |
And her beauty was discerned by every body in the world.
ਅਧਿਕ ਤਰੁਨਿ ਕੋ ਤੇਜ ਬਰਾਜਤ ॥
adhik tarun ko tej baraajat |
ਜਾ ਸਮ ਅਨਤ ਨ ਕਤਹੂੰ ਰਾਜਤ ॥੩॥
jaa sam anat na katahoon raajat |3|
There was none other comparable to her.(3)
ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੯ ॥

Bilaaval, Ninth Mehl:
ਜਾ ਮੈ ਭਜਨੁ ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
jaa mai bhajan raam ko naahee |
There is no meditation on the Lord within him.
ਤਿਹ ਨਰ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਕਾਰਥੁ ਖੋਇਆ ਯਹ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tih nar janam akaarath khoeaa yeh raakhahu man maahee |1| rahaau |
That man wastes his life uselessly - keep this in mind. ||1||Pause||
ਤੀਰਥ ਕਰੈ ਬ੍ਰਤ ਫੁਨਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਨਹ ਮਨੂਆ ਬਸਿ ਜਾ ਕੋ ॥
teerath karai brat fun raakhai neh manooaa bas jaa ko |
He bathes at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, and adheres to fasts, but he has no control over his mind.
ਨਿਹਫਲ ਧਰਮੁ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੁਮ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹਤ ਮੈ ਯਾ ਕਉ ॥੧॥
nihafal dharam taeh tum maanahu saach kehat mai yaa kau |1|
Know that such religion is useless to him. I speak the Truth for his sake. ||1||
ਜੈਸੇ ਪਾਹਨੁ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਭੇਦੈ ਨਾਹਿ ਤਿਹ ਪਾਨੀ ॥
jaise paahan jal meh raakhio bhedai naeh tih paanee |
It's like a stone, kept immersed in water; still, the water does not penetrate it.
ਤੈਸੇ ਹੀ ਤੁਮ ਤਾਹਿ ਪਛਾਨਹੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੀਨ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ॥੨॥
taise hee tum taeh pachhaanahu bhagat heen jo praanee |2|
So, understand it: that mortal being who lacks devotional worship is just like that. ||2||
ਕਲ ਮੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਮ ਤੇ ਪਾਵਤ ਗੁਰੁ ਯਹ ਭੇਦੁ ਬਤਾਵੈ ॥
kal mai mukat naam te paavat gur yeh bhed bataavai |
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, liberation comes from the Naam. The Guru has revealed this secret.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਈ ਨਰੁ ਗਰੂਆ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੩॥੩॥
kahu naanak soee nar garooaa jo prabh ke gun gaavai |3|3|
Says Nanak, he alone is a great man, who sings the Praises of God. ||3||3||
ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਘਰੁ ੧੦ ॥

Bilaaval, Ashtpadheeyaa, First Mehl, Tenth House:
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik oankaar satigur prasaad |
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਨਿਕਟਿ ਵਸੈ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਭੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
nikatt vasai dekhai sabh soee |
He dwells close at hand, and sees all,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
guramukh viralaa boojhai koee |
but how rare is the Gurmukh who understands this.
ਵਿਣੁ ਭੈ ਪਇਐ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
vin bhai peiai bhagat na hoee |
Without the Fear of God, there is no devotional worship.
ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥
sabad rate sadaa sukh hoee |1|
Imbued with the Word of the Shabad, eternal peace is attained. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
aisaa giaan padaarath naam |
Such is the spiritual wisdom, the treasure of the Naam;
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
guramukh paavas ras ras maan |1| rahaau |
obtaining it, the Gurmukhs enjoy the subtle essence of this nectar. ||1||Pause||
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਕਥੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
giaan giaan kathai sabh koee |
Everyone talks about spiritual wisdom and spiritual knowledge.
ਕਥਿ ਕਥਿ ਬਾਦੁ ਕਰੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
kath kath baad kare dukh hoee |
Talking, talking, they argue, and suffer.
ਕਥਿ ਕਹਣੈ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
kath kahanai te rahai na koee |
No one can stop talking and discussing it.
ਬਿਨੁ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥
bin ras raate mukat na hoee |2|
Without being imbued with the subtle essence, there is no liberation. ||2||
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ॥
giaan dhiaan sabh gur te hoee |
Spiritual wisdom and meditation all come from the Guru.
ਸਾਚੀ ਰਹਤ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
saachee rehat saachaa man soee |
Through the lifestyle of Truth, the True Lord comes to dwell in the mind.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਥਨੀ ਹੈ ਪਰੁ ਰਹਤ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
manamukh kathanee hai par rehat na hoee |
The self-willed manmukh talks about it, but does not practice it.
ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੂਲੇ ਥਾਉ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੩॥
naavahu bhoole thaau na koee |3|
Forgetting the Name, he finds no place of rest. ||3||
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਬੰਧਿਓ ਸਰ ਜਾਲਿ ॥
man maaeaa bandhio sar jaal |
Maya has caught the mind in the trap of the whirlpool.
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਬਿਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਬਿਖੁ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
ghatt ghatt biaap rahio bikh naal |
Each and every heart is trapped by this bait of poison and sin.
ਜੋ ਆਂਜੈ ਸੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਕਾਲਿ ॥
jo aanjai so deesai kaal |
See that whoever has come, is subject to death.
ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸੀਧੋ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮੑਾਲਿ ॥੪॥
kaaraj seedho ridai samaal |4|
Your affairs shall be adjusted, if you contemplate the Lord in your heart. ||4||
ਸੋ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥
so giaanee jin sabad liv laaee |
He alone is a spiritual teacher, who lovingly focuses his consciousness on the Word of the Shabad.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
manamukh haumai pat gavaaee |
The self-willed, egotistical manmukh loses his honor.
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਾਈ ॥
aape karatai bhagat karaaee |
The Creator Lord Himself inspires us to His devotional worship.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੫॥
guramukh aape de vaddiaaee |5|
He Himself blesses the Gurmukh with glorious greatness. ||5||
ਰੈਣਿ ਅੰਧਾਰੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੋਤਿ ॥
rain andhaaree niramal jot |
The life-night is dark, while the Divine Light is immaculate.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਝੂਠੇ ਕੁਚਲ ਕਛੋਤਿ ॥
naam binaa jhootthe kuchal kachhot |
Those who lack the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are false, filthy and untouchable.
ਬੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਰੋਤਿ ॥
bed pukaarai bhagat sarot |
The Vedas preach sermons of devotional worship.
ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਾਨੈ ਵੇਖੈ ਜੋਤਿ ॥੬॥
sun sun maanai vekhai jot |6|
Listening, hearing and believing, one beholds the Divine Light. ||6||
ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਮੰ ॥
saasatr simrit naam drirraaman |
The Shaastras and Simritees implant the Naam within.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਕਰਾਮੰ ॥
guramukh saant aootam karaaman |
The Gurmukh lives in peace and tranquility, doing deeds of sublime purity.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਦੂਖ ਸਹਾਮੰ ॥
manamukh jonee dookh sahaaman |
The self-willed manmukh suffers the pains of reincarnation.
ਬੰਧਨ ਤੂਟੇ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਮੰ ॥੭॥
bandhan tootte ik naam vasaaman |7|
His bonds are broken, enshrining the Name of the One Lord. ||7||
ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚੀ ਪਤਿ ਪੂਜਾ ॥
mane naam sachee pat poojaa |
Believing in the Naam, one obtains true honor and adoration.
ਕਿਸੁ ਵੇਖਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਦੂਜਾ ॥
kis vekhaa naahee ko doojaa |
Who should I see? There is none other than the Lord.
ਦੇਖਿ ਕਹਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਇ ॥
dekh khau bhaavai man soe |
I see, and I say, that He alone is pleasing to my mind.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥੮॥੧॥
naanak kahai avar nahee koe |8|1|
Says Nanak, there is no other at all. ||8||1||
